Love how this came out! So pretty! Bleach is awesome to use in this manner. It really brings out the beauty of the wood.
Just a safety moment, in case people aren't aware.( it's the nurse in me) Bleach can react dangerously with other chemicals, mainly ammonia. Also, please wear safety glasses, bleach can damage eyes if accidentally splashed in them (rinse eyes immediately with running cold water & seek medical care).
    Thanks for another great video!

Yes, bleach and vinegar (she mentioned some use vinegar in the water to wash off the bleach) creates chlorine gas much like it does with ammonia, which can be lethal if inhaled in high amounts.

I used to clean my back deck with bleach. I realized many, many years ago, when I was pouring SHOCK into my pool , I spilled some on the decking. I watched it soak into the wood, which was cedar, and was absolutely amazed at what it looked like. The spill was maybe half dollar sized and the wood was sparkling clean and GORGEOUS! Well, pool shock is basically bleach. Now, I had no intention of using pool shock at $17.00 a gallon. So I bought some store brand ( Dollar Tree ) bleach, a couple of cheap paintbrushes and proceeded to clean my decking. I always used deck cleaner, which is also very expensive, to clean my deck. I also stained some of my decking with a mahogany stain. That was used for the seating area. No more. I was convinced that this was going to work! I was also convinced by an area the size of a half dollar, that this was going to be beautiful. Well, my husband was shocked when he came home that evening. He wanted to know who had replaced the decks and how much it cost. I told him that I did it, by myself, and the cost was about $18. My sitting area was 16’ x 24’. A separate deck ran around the pool and was about 5’ wide. The pool was about 15’ x 30’. Oh it was a LOT of work. The good news is, when I got REALLY hot and sweaty, I could dip in the pool. The bad news was I didn’t want to get out🤣 Well, the decks came out gorgeous, no professional needed, and not a lot of money. My husband was in shock. I kinda was too. It really looked like I had it professionally done. All with bleach. 🤣🤣🤣

In regards to your comment at 5:33, please be very careful about using vinegar after using bleach. Vinegar and bleach mixed together make chlorine gas which can be extremely dangerous. At the very least, wipe it down with water and let it dry completely before going in with the vinegar, but in all honesty, unless you know what you're doing, I'd avoid mixing these two together.

It is a good idea to neutralize bleach: otherwise, the chlorine will remain in the pores of the wood and weaken the fibres. (Same reason you wouldn't leave your clothes to dry in bleach.) Either thorough rinsing (not ideal as it would raise the grain more) or an acid (like vinegar) will prevent long-term issues.

@@jmsl910 I use Behr paint. That paint has primer in it already. It's also a good quality paint. Majority of the time I use semi gloss, because I like to be able to wipe away any spills. Chalk paint tends to keep dust, and I personally don't like that. First I clean the surface with TSP, it's a solution to clean wood. I allow it to dry. Them I sand the furniture just as she did in the video. After sanding I wipe again with rubbing alcohol. Let dry. Then paint, 2 coats works well.

Consider an orbital sander as it is much more aggressive for removing polyurethane and stain, some have locking discs, that don’t pop off as easily & it will allow you to do more sanding in a shorter time. The price is comparable (if not lower)Also, there are some low fume removers that makes the job easier in the short period of time to help those who may struggle with doing this kind of work. In addition to gloves & goggles… please do this outdoors and wear a high quality respirator mask.😊

I love refinishing furniture...Thanks for the tip about the sander, the bleach and the polycrylic...wish I had your suggestions a few months ago when I refinished a bookcase. I did all the sanding by hand...whew! AND...my piece did turn out redder than I wanted, but it still looks nice.

That golden oak furniture has great lines, I see so many nice solid pieces at the thrift that just need a lil work and they will look so modern like how yours came out, like so much more expensive looking and not as dated.

Love it!!! 2 questions please - 1). if one wanted to start flipping thrifted furniture do you think this is a lot of effort and cost (sanding paper / poly / materials) to really make a decent profit and 2). what if you cant't go outside to dry the pieces between coats besides taking longer would not drying in the sun affect the result?
Thank you again this is a great video! xo
