11:20 - You can minimize "shoulder checking" if your mirrors are set properly. Unless you are driving a bus, coach, or tractor trailer, you should not see any of your own vehicle in your SIDE-view mirrors
Not shoulder checking is to driving what not checking to see if a weapon is loaded is to gun safety. Why would you change direction in a 2,000lbs+ vehicle at speed and NOT shoulder check? Shoulder checking is neither optional nor can it be minimized. See this vid for proper adjustment of mirrors: ruclips.net/video/VTfG8Rh5JRA/видео.html Drop us a note if we can help further. Lol, yes, I hate looking behind me. The thing I am going to hit is in front of me; I just use my mirrors to keep track of cars in or around my blind spot. Also, it throws me out of the center of my lane to twist my body around like that.

Hi Rick I am watching your videos I really like it. I am going for my road test June 6th for driving school instructors. Any tips or advice for me please?
Good stuff. Heres a helpful tip to reduce anxiety and frustration...if you have following distance and somebody cuts you off (does a lane change right in front of you) and you get upset, just say to yourself "with my good following distance I helped that person do a safer lane change". Many of these people will cut you off even if you dont have good following distance. So why not just have good following distance? And when someone cuts you off think of it from a different perspective - a helpful perspective. This will reduce your own road rage and reduce your own distractions. And most importantly forgive others for their offensive behavior as Jesus will forgive yours.
I passed my driving test this Thursday! Now I’m watching this video to help me feel more confident and safe on the road as a new driver. Thanks so much for these instructional videos, Rick-we appreciate you!
But its not true. They pass and beat you to the light and beat you to work. They get away with it. Fortunately I'm an idealist and will continue to do what is right. But it's still frustrating.
In the areas of social driving you want to keep yourself safe. And you can put in place techniques and skills that will keep you and others safe. There are always going to be aggressive drivers, but eventually they’re going to crash. You just don’t want to be there when they do my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Great video; one of my favorites. I run a driver ed program at a local high school in Massachusetts and I show your videos in every class. You do a great job of presenting the material in a clear, concise and fun way. I'm a fan. Keep up the good work!

I've been struggling to pass my road test due to nerves and making minor mistakes that add up and this video really helped me feel ready to start watching these videos again and focusing on my goal. Thanks for your helpful videos. When I was learning to drive in the 1960s, the rule about keeping the correct following-distance was: for every 10mph you're travelling at, keep back at least one vehicle length from the car in front of you. So that if your are driving at 50 mph, you should be at least five car-lengths back from the car in front of you. At 60mph stay six car-lengths back from the vehicle in front of you... etc.

Love your videos! Things you might add are: People saying blinkers give them the right to change lanes whenever they want People driving at night with their lights off Knowing that semi trucks have big blind spots. Don't match speeds there. Also, they often need to make wide turns. Anticipate and don't try to cut around them. Insurance scammers and brake checking. Get a dash cam. This video resonates with me: if there's one positive attribute to my driving, it's I'm almost unflappable at the wheel. Nothing gets me, much to the dismay of my passengers, who'll frequently pipe up with comments, like, "that guy's is going to cut in, don't let him!" and I ignore them. On rare occasions I've even gotten those guys (and they were/are invariably guys, take that as you will) to admit it was unnecessary to get upset. As you alluded to in another video, in start-stop driving, try to keep moving at a slow rate, play the "no stopping"-game (i.e. read traffic/traffic lights and try to avoid coming to a complete stop). It will improve your gas mileage, wear and tear on your vehicle and save you time. A good friend of mine drives a delivery truck, doing fixed itinenaries and he reckons, on a good day, when things work out, anticipating and playing the "no-stopping"-game, shaves 15 minutes of his working day versus just driving along and only slowing down when he really needs to. Also, for the people going for a CDL career, when running as just a tractor or with an empty trailer: resist the temptation of using the "zippyness" of these configurations. Because trucks can really move unloaded (they're also really tailhappy when there's no weight over their driving wheels, which may be less of an issue in the US or Canada, due to the general configuration of trucks over there). Heavy hoofing it in those configurations will kill your fuel economy like you wouldn't believe... it's not linear. It's not because you're light you're not able to burn a ton of fuel rushing.
Hi Jan Verschueren - Thank you for your comment and great information. When running a truck without a trailer, we call that bobtailing. And you are right - they are zippy without a trailer. Yes, if you can keep your vehicle moving - it's going to save you time. As I tell people, making more miles over the course of the day in a large vehicle is not about going faster, but maintaining a higher average speed for a longer amount of time. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Speaking of distracted driving, in my high school driver's ed class back in the late 1990s, before cell phones were prevalent or smartphones even existed, our classroom driver's ed instructor bragged about regularly applying her makeup, including mascara, while driving. She had some way of using the rearview mirror to do this. She always looked fine, so she was good at it. She didn't recommend that we as her students do this, but I found it bizarre even when I was 16 that a driving instructor would either do this much less talk about it to a group of high school students. I wonder if she has since mastered texting while driving & brags about this to her classes. No, I never did any of this myself, feel most of us were probably intelligent enough to know this wasn't appropriate driving behavior, but you never know...
A GREAT tip, and one almost never heard, is the one on selecting a vehicle that you as a driver can manage from the standpoint of size, maneuverability, lines of sight from the driving position etc. So often I've heard, "I want a big, heavy vehicle so that I'm protected in a crash!" That's a sham, a delusion - and a danger to others as well as yourself - if you cannot safely handle it in daily driving.
Advice about difficult or dangerous left turns: Obstruct Traffic! in a lot of cases bad left turn situations can be avoided simply by going a bit longer by making repeated right turns so as to end up on the desired route. Better than sitting at the intersection through multiple light cycles.

Thank you so much for sharing all the vital driving tips. You are simply the best. Keep up your good work. Your video and the suggestions below have enough tips to be safe driver on the road. At the traffic signal the driver needs to exercise precaution and care - decide well in advance when the light turns to red from amber as u mentioned. Very imp. Thanks once again.
Hey Claudees - thank you for your kind words. It is me that owes you a thank you. In all the years I've been teaching, I'm sure no one has asked me that question about how to stay safe post driver's licence. Little doubt, it was a challenging question; I gave the question considerable thought. Even with all my knowledge, experience and ability it was a complicated response. The biggest consideration was the difference between traffic regulations, predictability and social driving. Social driving is how drivers interact on the highway mixed with certain cultural expectation. The interaction between these aspects of driving create instances that some times result in crashes. Thank you Cheers Rick

17:14 - what if both lights turn yellow, you're stuck at the intersection trying to turn but the car coming in the opposite direction isn't stopping or slowing down on their yellow light? Do you still need to clear the intersection or just let the guy speed by even if it means your light turns red?
Best approach is; if you can, make the turn by the time the car gets to you, obviously make sure it’s safe and logical to, if you can’t. Wait until they zoom by and your light turns red, there’s usually a second or two for a delay on the other lights for situations like this, just make the left turn on red and get out as fast as possible. Hope this helps
You could be right or you could be dead right is true. If I am not sure the other driver is going to yield, I'm not risking it. I have an old friend who got his license not long before me, drives less, but totalled 3 cars in his lifetime because of his "If he has to yield I'm not going to! Either he learn's the rules or we are going to crash and he is going to pay, I don't care" mentality. He survived all those. And the other party's insurance has always paid his damages. But you never know when something you lose in an accident cannot be restored with money. I still drive the same car since I got my license. No accident. One time I hit a curb when we were trying to drift in an empty lot. But that's the worst I ever got. Not even a scratch other than that.
Hi Sir Rick, indeed this is a great lesson... just wanna know about your conclusion ... I think you miss number 8? Is it the CRUISE CONTROL? As you've mention it's your favourite. Thank you so much sir and God bless you.

Hi Rick, Is creeping up to the middle of intersection allowed in case of flashing yellow. What is the difference between solid green and flashing yellow in the context of left turn?

I'd like to see you make a video in Brampton, Ontario. The people in that community have no regard for any road safety rules. They speed everywhere - 70 in a 50, 85 in a 60. They follow too closely, they have no regard for other drivers. Anti-social community, very dangerous driving.
Yesterday I was driving on a main road and here cones a man from side Road gets inside without waiting. I just turned the car to left which stopped the car from the left lane. What should be done. I also had a car close by behind me also.
When you are in a small car and a truck is in from of you, in an intersection turning left..WE CAN'T SEE THE LIGHTS , please wait a little until you can see the traffic lights..so be CAREFUL TO SEE THE LIGHT IS GREEN FOR YOU. IF NOT YOU CAN GET A TICKET going on RED.

Hi Rick, how about when the traffic flow is higher than the speed limit? I can’t keep up with the traffic flow. There's a very narrow road on my way to work without lines separating the road. The posted speed limit is 30km but everybody drives 50km. I can't do that. So there’s a huge line behind me. The driver behind tailgates, honks, flashes the lights. It's crazy. My way to work is a huge nightmare. I go through very difficult roads. Another one is a tiny road with a canal on my side (way back from work). The speed limit is 50km but everybody is driving 70km. I am afraid to fall in the canal, so I go 50km driving everybody crazy behind me. It's a nightmare to drive in the Netherlands. They only respect the speed limit if there's a camera.
Hi Val S. - thank you for your comment and query. Actually, that applies to almost all places. All traffic, no matter where you are is going to drive above the posted speed limit. This video may help: ruclips.net/video/Ju3jSCTEBsE/видео.html All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi MFQ Yahoo - Thank you for your query. In North America traffic flow typically travels at speeds of 5-10mph (8-15kph) above the posted speed limit. And my professional theory is that people are at a higher risk of a crash when acting unpredictably. A speed differential is one of those unpredictable actions. In other words, if you're driving the posted speed limit, all the other traffic is travelling faster. Therefore, to be reduce the risk of being involved in a crash, it is recommended that you travel with the flow of traffic after getting your license. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

I agree. I have taken 4 to 5x of this course in Texas. It really saved my life.
A safe driver will constantly improve himself as soon as he is in the driver’s seat. Thus is my motto since 1975.
I’m also an experienced driver. Japanese here. I watch Rick’s vids to learn English. From Tokyo.
Hi Rick
I am watching your videos I really like it.
He is absolutely right. This is my number one strategy
Your the dad I wish I had when first learning to drive! After not driving for 6 years, I’m back behind the wheel and confident
" let them go have their crash somewhere else." That's savage as hell. Lmao
Savage as hell, but he's not wrong lol
That would be a nice quote for bumper sticker! "Go have your crash somewhere else!!!"
But I wouldn’t wanted to wish that on anybody. I want to make sure I’m safe and somebody else is safe.

At 60mph stay six car-lengths back from the vehicle in front of you... etc.
I have been watching your video before my driving test and still watching it. This video is helpful to all drivers new or old. Wish you can upload it again. Thank you very much. God bless you

Love your videos!
Things you might add are:
People saying blinkers give them the right to change lanes whenever they want
People driving at night with their lights off
Knowing that semi trucks have big blind spots. Don't match speeds there. Also, they often need to make wide turns. Anticipate and don't try to cut around them.
Insurance scammers and brake checking. Get a dash cam. Good for resolving accident faults, as the other person will try to lie their way out. Or download files and give to police to help the innocent, as a witness.
Keep up the great work!

Love your videos, learned late in life, but still watching to improve.Thank you.
Thanks great videos. Really those tutorials help me, before to get my license very good explainer 👌🏼 from Alberta.

@@andrewmardar9442 thanks

Hi Rick! Do u have a video on how to turn right or turn left in a 4 way street with no traffic lights. Thanks a lot!
Hi Rick, Is creeping up to the middle of intersection allowed in case of flashing yellow. What is the difference between solid green and flashing yellow in the context of left turn?
Hi Zaheer Khan - Thank you for your query. If you encounter a flashing yellow light and you are not yet in the intersection you should come to a stop.
Amazing video.
Hi Frank Dell - glad to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

3:30 - that bird totally agreed with you.
Great vid! I have problems controlling emotions when somebody cuts me off. I will follow your advise. Thanks.

my instructor gave me the best advice which is now I am giving to my son. Drive as if you are the smartest person on the road and you are surrounded by idiots, how would you survive to reach your destination.?
Thanks Rick!

What if the guy pushing to take the gaps on the left turn intersection is the road test guy, i didnt take some gaps and...
i passed btw, he just told me to take those gaps otherwise others users would get mad which made sense
Hi Juggy Boy - that is a awesome news. Thank you for letting us know. Yes, some times you have to take the gap, but when you're new, it's better to get honked at rather than be struck because you misjudged the gap. I'm sure you had a big celebration, and it is well deserved. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Enjoy your newly earned freedom. All the best, Cheers Rick

Are you saying it’s ever okay to go over the speed limit?
Smart Drive Test very interesting! I’m totally surprised! Thank you for your input! I live in British Columbia too. My drive instructor told me to keep to the limit, so I am all the more surprised. I have, however, noticed people are always passing me on the roadways, which doesn’t seem safe.
I love your videos. I am absolutely determined to become a skilled and safe driver, and your videos help me with all the little details in and around what I can learn during my sessions with my instructor.
Isn't the left lane slower lane?
Only if you’re in a country where they drive on the left. Cheers Rick
Deep breathing helps alot and the more you can increase your awareness helps. Less caffeine actually helps too because caffiene increases your cortisol level.
I’m so scared of driving I just got a car and I’m getting my license but I’m sooo scared and I really don’t want to crash I also hesitate a lot when panicking

"If you're not sure don't go." that's what my instructor always told me. F- everyone else, don't let them pressure you. You will become more confident in time. I don't know which country you are in, but in the UK we have P plates, I would recommend getting some so people around you know you are a new driver.
V that’s what I’m going to say to myself from now on 🙌🏼
That's why you practice. Keep calm, get the basics down, and practice what you're most of afraid of the most. For me, it was parking so I wen't to parking lots and did everysingle park there was and watched lots of videos to help.
good info
