Been driving for 3 years now in Quebec, I've been having a hard time with driving at night on 90km/h country roads where there's no street lights, I stress and I go way too slow (20km bellow) and piss off everyone. with you're video now I know what I'm doing wrong, I was looking not far ahead enough, maybe one meter or two,
Hi Rick, hope this finds you well. Thank you so much! I am one of those you helped so much through your videos. I am from the Philippines and I got my driver's license in 2019. I enrolled in a 15-hr driving class then took my exam and I was happy that I passed. Behind my success in getting my DL, I watched all your videos, esp parking. I learned a lot from you, and I come back to you every time I need a refresher. Right now, I am currently in the USA and was shocked how different driving here compared to the Ph. I am outside Chicago ( do they call it country?). Back in Ph our roadsides there are mostly guarded by barriers and road markers/paintings. Then I went out at night for the first time here in the US, it scared the shit out of me cause I couldn't see the road, not very visible road markings and no road lights. That's the reason why I am back to watch your videos again cause I need a lot of things which are applicable in my current situation: familiarization of the place (like what you said in one of your videos, every place is different and requires a driver to learn and adjust), night driving, curves, and so much more. I feel like a new driver again in this different place but I am grateful I can rely on you. BTW, you deserve a lot of praises. Your way of teaching is the best I've seen after so many others I tried watching, maybe your reassuring voice, your character, your on-point content, everything. Apologies for this lengthy message. I just can't express my gratitude enough. Good health to you and more success!
When I drive at night I always turn the dash lights to a minimum and I opted for the heads up display (it’s a reflexion on the screen of my speed, speed limit and gps guidance) when I got my car; I find that it’s amazing for driving at night because I always have my eyes on the road while still knowing my speed and speed limits.
Hi Ladonna - thank you! A few times that I took CDL students out at night I quickly learned that they didn't know how to find the road at night, and I realized that they'd never been taught. Night driving and driving in low visibility and inclement weather are just not something we teach drivers. I'm glad this video is going to help correct that omission. Thank again, Cheers Rick
+Smart Drive Test interesting points ,if anyone else trying to find out improving eyesight naturally vitamins try great gazer fix (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my co-worker got cool results with it.
Hi 81jeron - Thank you for your comment. And no doubt, driving at night is difficult for many drivers and required different skills. At night seeing and interpreting road signs is imperative. same happened to me once also, made a left turn at the intersection and started driving on the opposite lane, almost hit someone. Good thing they noticed and stopped.
Hello Rick! Thank you so much for responding to my request with this awesome night driving video. Appreciate all the tips, most especially about the dash lights and protecting my night vision. Keep up the outstanding work!!!

This is probably good for newbie drivers, but let's be real: if you seriously drive 8-10km/h under the speed limit (10:03) everyone is going to be beeping at you because you're holding up traffic; which can end dangerously.
Hi hexlgaming - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. On the roads where you're going to be driving slower, there is going to be very little traffic owing to the fact that there are few if any street lights. On busier roads, you can simply follow the other traffic to find the roadway. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I agree. I live in an urban area with a record of the worst drivers in the US. If I drove 8-10 miles under the speed limit, I might be seriously involved in a collision and/or run off the road. No one adheres to the speed limit anyway and drives at least 40 on residential and secondary roads and up to 80 on highways.
In Australia you have guide poles or reflectors on both sides of the road. We drive right hand drive , so the left side of the road has red reflectors and the right has white. We do have cats eye reflectors on free ways and major roads, in the outback on some roads they are generally not marked, so a good set of driving lights are almost mandatory if you don't want to collide with the local wildlife (kangaroos, wombats.cows' camels and any other thing that decides to cross the road )
Probably the best tips of all, preserve your night vision, even if you have to use the old pilot trick of closing one eye to preserve it in at least one eye when some clown shines high beams into your eyes. Genius: blind the person coming towards you at fifty miles an hour.
Hi tony mitchell - Thank you for your comment and endorsement. And you are most welcome. And yes, when other vehicles are approaching, ensure that you're looking to the fog line on the outside of the lane. All the best, Cheers Rick

@@smartdrivetest I am very happy with the content you have put out. I am still learning the basics. Focused on turning and have not even started doing lane changes yet. I can stay centered in lane and brake and press gas to the satisfaction of instructor. Turning at intersections is more complicated. Your video's make it look easy though. And I have watched them a few times to get more details. It is very handy when mixed with what the instructor has me do. I was driving at 8 to 9 tonight so your night time video was helpful, and the video's on turning was extremely useful.

Im not confident changing lanes at night on the highway because I dont know how to judge how far vehicles are behond me. Can someone please help me, thank you.
You're not the only driver that has challenges changing lanes at night my friend. Changing lanes at night and driving larger vehicles have a technique in common: driver's in these situations ease into a lane change. #1) they have 4 to 7 flashes on the signal; #2) drivers move their vehicle to the left side of the lane to indicate that they're changing lanes. By communicating with these two techniques, if gives other drivers ample time to move out of the way, and it allows to be absolutely sure that there aren't any other vehicles on the side to which you're changing lanes. All the very best, Cheers Rick
I'm good at driving during day time hours but at night it is hard too see especially long distance driving I drive home at night from work on express way but it's a 7 min drive

Solid line in the center of the roadway, I hope you know how fortunate you are ! Most of the highways in the U.S. the center line is a very pale yellow that isn’t visible at night !
I wish the US would fully implement delineators (reflective sticks along the side of the road, or reflective markers along the middle line or median), a fixed distance apart.

Thank you again I would like to add few tips if you don’t mind: driving at night first you need to have clean windshield no dust no old with scratches .you can easily tell when the car going in the opposite direction lights are glaring that your windshield is dirty, it also strains your eyes and for modern day drivers avoid having your GPS/phone at the level of your face “the lower the better”,any pair of shining balls on the side means presence of Animals. God Bless you

Thanks for this video, I keep learning more when I watch your video, thanks for showing tips and tricks on the roads in the dark. In my class, they never had us drive in the dark but we did talk about how to drive in the dark. I love driving. There is times I have seen skunks at night and it makes me drive slower during nights because I live out in the country not in town. When I see lights. I try to look at the white line on the outside of the road and I also slow down. Driving in town it is crazy because there is a lot of cars and lights. My mother told me to use the thing in the window for cars behind me. I like
Hi Natalie Marie Baldwin - Thank you for your comment. And yes, driving is awesome. There is something truly empowering about driving. And I agree about the challenge of driving in the city at night owing to the crazy amount of ambient light. It's even harder at night in the city when it rains due to the reflections in the water on the roadway. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. In some remote/backwoods roads my concern is with animals. Deer etc.. Darn critters seem to wait until you are close by when they decide to run out infront. It's like they have a death wish. 😳I have sent my share of critters to the great beyond because of this.

Your videos have helped me so much! I am coming up on a major life change that somewhat relates to driving where I might be moving in with a new partner for the first time. I was very insecure all my life about driving so taking a major leap after a major leap of learning to drive feels like my life is moving ahead. I want to be able to be a good driver for both myself and my partner when it comes to things like needing to run errands and getting places to be a functional person lol. In order for me to get comfortable with driving more and do the things I need to do include driving on the highway which is something I have yet to practice but it's on my list. (I have been procrastinating and taking surface roads). Do you have any videos that give tips on driving when moving and hauling(say moving vans like uhauls) or anything related to that? Even road trip advices? Driving opens up so many life options.
Hi lust4lyfe101 - Thank you for your comment and confession. Yes, the lights from other vehicles can be blinding indeed. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
If you see a Car approaching from the front and if you feel the lights are too high for you, according to the law here in Alberta, look down on the right side of the road and look for the lines, until that vehicle has passed. This will keep you on the road and possible avoid the blinding. Although do not rely on my advice, you can check on google or maybe Rick can confirm. Thank you
I love all your videos. These are things that are simply not taught by most driving instructors who merely teach to the test. Rather than teaching strategic, defensive driving. Your videos also have so much utility for Australian roads. I really appreciate this. One question, however, when approaching an intersection and braking (at least during the day) I always check my rear mirror as part of cash avoidance from behind. If the traffic behind is blinding you how would you manage this as looking in the mirror to assess the risk could dizzy you? Again thank you for your awesome videos
Also, could you please clarify what you mean by "reflective signs"? Is this all signs ? And is it that the light is reflecting off so as to help light the path ahead? Additionally, when you say the lights are blinding? But dont the lights actually facilitate vision? Sorry for 1000s of questions just wanted to clarify.
Thanks Amy for your comment. There's a little switch under the centre mirror. Flip that up and it will prevent the glare from vehicles behind you my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Yes, all signs are reflective, which allows them to be seen from a farther distance. The white lights from other traffic are the most blinding. It's important to protect your night vision my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

Many salutations, Dr. August! My inquiry has to do with animals that wander onto the roadway when you are traveling at speed. What is the proper way to avoid a collision with large ungulates or even ursines that wander into the roadway? Moreover, what is a quick and comprehensible technique to warn passing motorists that you have had an encounter with a large ungulate/ursine and clue them in on how to get the animal out of the way? I heard that large ungulates behave toward vehicle headlights as if they are a carnivore by waiting to dash away at the last minute (at which point a collision is definitely going to happen) and that the route to defeat that scenario is to extinguish your headlights -- both low-beams and high-beams. As for warning the other motorists, there could be a sequence like this: (from low-beams) high-beams, headlights off, low-beams, repeat twice more. What do you think, Dr. August?
Awesome info as usual, i am a prof CDL driver (OTR) and i always enjoy your videos, a lot of CDL holders believe they know it all, never hurts to learn more info. Thanks again for taking the time!! JK

Night driving here in Tampa is a nightmare. Some of these neighborhoods are blacked out/dimly lit. Pedestrians wear dark clothing asking to be hit. People riding bicycles do not always follow rules of the road by ensuring they have lights on thier bikes and driving on the correct side of the road.
Hi Jannely d - I have one up here on the channel, but it was the early days of my learning how to video in the car. I'll redo the video and send you the link. I'll get it done in the next couple of days. Thanks Cheers Rick
When at night or day when I’m stopped at an intersection or driveway exit where there’s not much visibility to the left or right, I open the two front windows to also to be able to listen for approaching vehicles. I also open my driver windows when I come out of my driveway in New York City where parked cars are blocking my view so that I can look for headlights at night but also listen and if I’m the day to listen and proceed with caution. Sometimes bicycles and scooters are driving in the wrong direction. I also open my window when backing up into a space just in case I were to miss seeing a pedestrian walking behind the vehicle. I feel more in tune with the situation by listening as well as looking. Any thoughts ?
I was (am) leaning night driving and this unfamiliar road had an island and road coming into it as well as it being slightly curved. I couldn't have my high beams on either because of oncoming traffic on the other side. Really messed with my perception. Obv the speed wasn't high but dang. Then I had my reaction times tested with some bugger speeding into a roundabout while I was in it 1st. Due to its location I'm thinking this driver wasnt familiar with the area either but he was still going too fast because I didn't see him before I entered the roundabout. I'm going to stick to local night driving until I get a few solid months of driving under me.
Hi laura nebular - Thank you for your comment. I would suggest that you practice driving at night in urban areas, and as you get more and more comfortable with night driving, you can move out into less lit areas. All the best, Cheers Rick

You can also use a GPS or even better a trucker GPS at night as a tool to know where the road ahead is doing be for you get there and even the elevation. It give you a good picture and what to expect , and knowing is half the battle….yo Joe
One thing to add is to double your following distance at night? If this is the case, how do you know whether or not you're tailgating somebody. I know you shall see the back wheels of the car in front but what about when you have your following distance doubled?
Hi Evan Opedal - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. Yes, you definitely want to increase your following distance at night. It is easy to mark the following distance with lights and reflective signs and markers. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Shilan Mathew - Thank you for your question. Yes, on a multi-lane roadway you can make a lane change if it's permitted. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Excellent tips! But let's talk about the point in the video at 24:33 where there's an oncoming vehicle and a crosswalk just behind the oncoming vehicle. There's a very common issue where I live, that comes up with this situation in the city at night, where the oncoming vehicle passes the crosswalk and a pedestrian to your LEFT, enters the crosswalk behind the car that just passed it and begins walking into your path from left to right. But you can't see the pedestrian starting to cross because the oncoming car (that just passed the crosswalk) is essentially blinding you with its headlights and obscuring your sight of the pedestrian. Then the oncoming car passes by you and you're now just about on top of the crosswalk and you're startled by the sudden sight of the pedestrian you're almost hitting or coming too close to. Despite one's best efforts, this scenario seems to rely almost entirely on the pedestrian having the common sense enough to wait until they can see that no vehicles are bearing down on the crosswalk. Aside from slowing down somewhat and TRYING your best to scan the part of the crosswalk that was just previously blocked by the oncoming car and its bright headlights, through vision that hasn't recovered from the headlights, I'm not sure what else can really be done but hope you don't hit someone crossing. Also, another BIG TIP! Keep your windshield VERY clean! Any dirt, oily film or crud on your glass will scatter the light from other vehicles and street lighting and make seeing even more challenging.

i missed: "You should always be able to stop within the visible distance". also: in poor visibility activate your hazard lights if cars in front of you are stopped and you're the rearmost car (and keep your foot on the breakes: break lights remain on). improves the chance of not getting rearended. it's more difficult to judge the speed of others at night, so don't get caught of guard by the guy cutting you of because he tought you are driving slower than you are.
This year I’ve found my night driving more challenging, I agree I hate to be the lead car I like to have a car to follow it makes life much easier

Maybe ask the city or state to repaint the lines. Tell them what road you are on and ask if they could give it a fresh coat of paint.

Where are you from brother?
@@AliSherAwan47 I am fron Ontario,Canada.
Been driving for 3 years now in Quebec, I've been having a hard time with driving at night on 90km/h
country roads where there's no street lights, I stress and I go way too slow (20km bellow) and piss off everyone. with you're video now I know what I'm doing wrong, I was looking not far ahead enough, maybe one meter or two,
Hi Rick, hope this finds you well.
Night time driving glasses have helped me tremendously
Hi Driving Guy Idaho - Thank you for your comment. Do you find you're less fatigued? All the best, Cheers Rick
Where did you get those
Rick you are the best in RUclips.thank for all these tips.
Hi Nathalie Noel - thank you for your awesome comment. If there is anything specific we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
How about dealing with the nuclear bright oncoming lights from large SUV's and lifted pickups?
good good night driving video, most won't teach this at all, good to have solid instruction!

Im having hard time driving at night i get easley confused with the road lines last time i enter the wrong direction i did not see the island.
How is your night driving now. Did you get any better

@@maryl8539 not 8-10 mph below speed limit... 3-5. But... even slower if rain or fog
Yea, I just got ran off the road last night for driving at a speed I could handle.

I'm good at driving during day time hours but at night it is hard too see especially long distance driving

A lot of if not all roads have them if there aren't lights unless you live in the middle of no where
I just got my Novice licence and these videos are helping me a lot thanks !

I'm exactly like you do. It's just that I'm not comfortable with the car behind me, and I'm driving very slowly. It made me nervous 😂

I hate n get scared at driving at night cause these cars blind me with there lights

Hi ikram hassan - thank you for your comment and query. Yes, I'll give that some thought and put together a video for you.

4:14 Not all urban areas are well lit. Here in Tampa Florida very few are well lit. You really have to have your head on a swivel in some of our neighborhoods.

You can also use a GPS or even better a trucker GPS at night as a tool to know where the road ahead is doing be for you get there and even the elevation. It give you a good picture and what to expect , and knowing is half the battle….yo Joe
Thank you for that information. Although be sure to be looking at the road….especially at night. All the best, Cheers Rick
Great video sir
can you do line change on a highway while driving night ... thank you ...
Good video. Looking for night driving Winter in Mountains.

i missed: "You should always be able to stop within the visible distance".
also: in poor visibility activate your hazard lights if cars in front of you are stopped and you're the rearmost car (and keep your foot on the breakes: break lights remain on). improves the chance of not getting rearended.
it's more difficult to judge the speed of others at night, so don't get caught of guard by the guy cutting you of because he tought you are driving slower than you are.
