  • When learning to drive, judging a safe gap when turning is an essential skill that must be learned - watch the video! Get PASS ROAD TEST CHECKLIST: www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-r... SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest
    Determining a safe gap is one of the essential skills that a driver must learn to drive safely and NOT crash!
    TIME TO TURN
    In the city, a driver requires a gap of 5 - 10 seconds; on highways a driver requires 10 - 20 seconds.
    FACTORS DETERMINING GAP
    There are many factors that determine the size of the gap required to turn safely:
    • speed of traffic flow;
    • lines of sight (how far can you see down the road);
    • driver's ability and driving experience;
    • acceleration of your vehicle;
    • geography (are you turning uphill or downhill);
    • size of your vehicle (the larger your vehicle, the more time you require)
    WORK WITH AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER
    It is recommended that you work with an experienced driver or a driving instructor to learn how to judge gap correctly. It is difficult to provide practical application in a video due to the many variables required to learn this skill.
    Determining a safe gap is a right-brain activity. When determining gap, you are determining spatial orientation of objects relative to each other. In other words, you are determining how far other road users are from your vehicle and in relation to other fixed objects. And the distance that other vehicles are away is measured in time - the same as following distance.
    EXERCISE
    If you are having difficulty determining safe gap, go out to an intersection and pick a fixed object in the distance - a sign, a building, or other road feature. When the vehicle passes the fixed object, start counting or timing the vehicle Determine what vehicles look like in the distance at different time intervals. How big is a vehicle when it's 8 seconds away as opposed to 20 seconds away. This exercise will help you to determine a safe gap into which to turn.
    SMALLER IS TOUGHER
    Know also that the smaller the vehicle, the more difficult it is to determine gap. And the higher the vehicles are travelling too also makes it more difficult to determine gaps.
    RIGHT BRAIN ACTIVITY
    Finally, the task of determining spatial relations or figuring out how far a road user is from you is a right-brain activity. The right-brain is unable to accurately determine time, which is a left-brain activity. In the video, I miscalculate time and this underscores the importance of working with an experienced driver or driving instructor to properly learn the skill of determining gap…to turn safely.
    Good luck on your road test!

    I misjudged the gap on a left hand turn, only reason was because I was not patient and because of the pressure of all of the traffic behind me waiting. I took a turn at the wrong moment and was almost hit by a really big car.

    Judging gap is currently one of my biggest struggles. I’ve been driving since around a July to august. I guess it just takes a lot of practice. I drive with my dad usually and he not the best at helping me. I guess just keep practicing and I’ll get better. For now, I just wait until it’s 100 percent clear. Because the worst that could/has happened then is cars get mad and honk.

    Today, I took a right turn by miscalculating the time it takes to reach 60 km/hr from 0 km/hr and luckily the other guy stopped, honked and showed finger when he passed me. I don't know why I did this but I feel guilty and it was a near miss rear collision if other guy didn't press brakes at the right time. I tried accelerating as much as I can but my vehicle didn't pick the speed then. The reason I am writing my experience is please don't do the same mistake I did. TAKE YOUR TIME. Ensure to have safe distance and time as specified in this video while taking turns. Thanks again, Rick for your valuable suggestions and keep up the good work.

    I'm from the United States and This was honestly so helpful. I've been driving for over two years, and I feel like I'm decent, but turning left into multiple lanes of traffic from a side road has always been a major fear of mine. You've helped me out tremendously. My highway going thru my town is Farley packed there's really no other way to get anywhere, but the speed limit is about 70 km/h. People in my town are very impatient, and will just pull out in front of multiple lanes of traffic, and I just wait. I'll never risk it. Thank you!

    Hi Rick, I got to tell you watching drive training videos is a lot easier than hiring a driving instructor. In Polk County, Florida we only have 3 driving schools that have dual brakes, and it's next to impossible just to get one 90 minute to 2 hour road lesson. They either do stupid courses with road test prep even if you already have a license and the schools are book for 2 months out. They can have a a car sit out front all day and yet still not offer a one 90 to 2 hour course.
    So what I am doing about this, watching as many video's as I can and I'll just be renting a vehicle to practice every training technique as I can get on my own.
    Also it's like $97.00 If you can get a 90 minute evaluation. Now I just rather spend that money just practicing with a rental instead since I don't own one but I need to practice and I do like driving again.

    Thank you Rick for this. I failed my driving test recently because I thought the oncoming car was far enough for me to safely make a left turn, probably around the same distance as the oncoming black car in your video at the 9:11 mark at a slightly smaller intersection. Alas, the instructor said no. It was the one and only error I had on the test, but it was a critical one, so it's a fail. I think even the examiner was disappointed that he had to fail me because I've been doing so good prior to that. When I observe other people driving, most cars would do literally the same thing I did, but of course, it's probably not the safest thing to do and the test is all about examining whether you are a safe driver. Interesting fact there about the right side of your brain and how it affects your spatial recognition. I do have a bit of a challenge with my spatial judgment, so I would need to work harder to overcome that. Thank you so much for your helpful video. You are a really good teacher.

    The faster the speed zone is on a road, the quicker the gap will close and the faster you will need to accelerate to make the turn safely. This is something that I've seen people commonly miscalculate. A left turn is not going to be the same on a 50 mph road as it is on a 30 mph road because the cross traffic covers more ground in a shorter amount of time.

    I took a Safe Driving refresher course at my local senior center and learned that as people age the eye structure actually changes ... it's harder to recognize the speed of oncoming traffic! That explains why I was being honked at more after turning!
    So now I'm more cautious, consciously remember I need to leave more room than I "think", and speed up more quickly; I also realized I had not been blending into traffic, as I tend to drive more slowly these days, so again I consciously try to blend more quickly.
    There's a very slight hill to my right (I'm in U.S., right-hand driving) that's JUST high enough so oncoming traffic can barely realize there's an intersection ahead and when I'm stopped on my rural road waiting for a clearing in the highway traffic I can't see oncoming traffic at any distance. Many times I've pulled out, no one in sight, and suddenly someone's "in my trunk". I've learned to be especially wary there, speeding up to highway speeds and anxiously watching my rear view mirror. Cars often come over the hill much faster than the posted speed limit and I have to floor it to stay ahead of them safely.

    Would you recommend sitting in the traffic island and making a two-step left turn?
    I don’t like making this move. There are several areas were I live that involve making a left (such a a from a parking lot) and crossing oncoming traffic. Tends to be barely enough room to position your vehicle away from the traffic lanes and very difficult to see.
    Another option is turning right and making a u turn.

    I just had to deal with a left handed turn onto a busier street where it was 50mph and was pitch black outside so I couldnt really find a fixed point to determine when to make my turn, so I kinda had to judge it based off how far I could see the person's headlights and where I was waiting. Making left hand turns gets me flustered a lot of the time, so I try to avoid them as much as I possibly can unless there's a light to stop the floe of traffic for that left hand turn or a middle lane for me to turn into so I'm on the road and all I'm waiting on is for the right lane to clear.

    Great video. You are very generous to post these videos. I am anxiously waiting for "how to drive a manual car #4". I had my first lesson yesterday. My instructor was very impressed. My clutch control is not perfect,, but your videos helped me A LOT. I saved 3-4 lessons according to him (at 60 euros per 1.5 hours, that's great news). However, I am finding it incredibly difficult to change down gears. I am on 4th gear approaching a turn.... He tells me to brake to a 2nd gear speed, then clutch down and change to 2nd gear. By the time I am turning, I am supposed to be done with the foot work (just gas of course). I can't do it... So frustrating. I am turning and still trying to change the gear to 2nd :(

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Val S. - thank you for your awesome comment. See, lesson #4 was waiting for your comment and this information. The challenge you're currently having is an easy fix - start setting up for the turn earlier. You need more time to downshift to second gear, so instead of braking approximately 1/2 block, start at about 1 or 11/2 blocks from the turn. That way you have more time to do the work that you have to do to set up for the turn. As well, use the brake to bring the engine rpm down to about 1,000 rpm in a petrol engine to shift down to second gear. I'm working to get the video up for your for tomorrow. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick

      The smaller your engine, the more difficult this becomes. I know in Europe and particularly UK, people are obsessed with small cars with tiny engines. This means slower speeds for any manoeuvres.

    I was in a accident caused by me I was making a left turn for first time at intersection it was a green light not green arrow it was heavy traffic for me and the line of on coming traffic kept coming so do to pressure when a clearing opened up I went but I miss judge how fast the cars would be coming up when I was making the turn and bam get hit in side so now because of that I have fear of knowing if I have a clear enough gap to make it.

    I had a situation once where i had to cross one road and turn onto the next and there was no stop light and i miss judged a small truck, thank goodness it was small, lol, it was coming in the same lane i was turning onto all i heard was the guy beeping is horn and by that time i was starting to brace for impact but the guy was able to swing into the adjacent lane to aviod hitting me. Since then ive always been extra careful at that intersection.

      Hi Big$MoneyBoss - thank you for your compliment. I worked for that video!! 80) In post-production, I realized I misjudged the time on that left-hand turn out onto the highway, but then remembered that spatial orientation is a right-brain activity as described in "Drawing on the Right-Side of the Brain". Right brain activities have no sense of artificial time; that's why you'll hear drivers say they didn't remember the last 20 minutes of driving. Therefore, when turning and concentrating on finding a gap, I was unable to accurately conceive time. Long story shorter, judging gap is comparable to determining following distance - best learned by using time and working with an experienced driver or instructor. How long to the test? All the best, Cheers Rick

    I've had my license for a few years, and I absolutely love driving and learning new ways to be a better and safer driver. Your channel has been very helpful for me to learn how to do this (e.g. I am now more conscientious of incoming vehicles when stopped on a highway), so I want to thank you for all of your advice.
    However, I have a question unrelated to this video: I often find in heavy-and-slow traffic, or even stop-and-go traffic, that if I leave a safe following distance to the car in front of me, someone always pulls in front of me (perhaps they interpret my open gap to mean that traffic is flowing faster in my lane). This forces me to have to slow down even more to re-achieve a safe gap, which allows yet ANOTHER vehicle to pull in front of me, ad nauseam.
    Is there a way to maintain this safe following distance without people taking advantage of it, or do I just keep balancing the risk of a slightly less-safe distance to prevent people from constantly cutting me off?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +7

      Hi Hiccups - thank you for your comment and query. I'm a huge advocate of keeping space in front of my vehicle. If people want to take up that space and pull in front, than I just let them. In my experience driving trucks, buses, and cars, I find that it really doesn't take any time out of my day. I just regain the space in front of my vehicle and continue to listen to the audio book on the stereo. And the other way I think of it is for them to go and have their crash somewhere else if they're really in that much of a hurry. And keeping space in front of your vehicle prevents you from being rear-ended: ruclips.net/video/LzgcJbBmAfc/видео.html If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Hey, thanks so much for your reply! I think, then, that it might just be me over-exaggerating the effects of having to slow down for the car lane changing in front of me. Also, "having their crash somewhere else" is a very helpful way to look at it and avoid frustration, haha.

    On a four highway with a minimum speed of 30 and a maximum of 55, you need enough time to reach the minimum speed or faster. You don't need to match the traffic immediately , because most drivers will use the left lane to pass you, then you can pick up your speed. On a two lane highway, you do need to match the flow of traffic or 10 miles below the limit or higher, because there are less opportunities to pass.

    • @smartdrivetest

    What I don't like, that sometimes there is some dumbass behind you, who is just impatient AF. When he sees small gap, he thinks that you have to move into this gap and free space for him and he starts beeping. Of course he does not give a damn, if I don't have enough skills or if I just have a different judgement. It's my car will crash, not his, just cause he is so god damn impatient.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +4

      Hi andrewmansion - thank you for your detailed comment. What you're explaining is social driving. And yes, you're right, you should not succumb to the pressures of other drivers. If you're not comfortable going, simply don't go. I know that's hard, but you have to take a breath and go when you're ready to go, not when someone else thinks you should go. As you said, you're going to risk a crash. As my driving instructor said:
      1) they can wait for you
      2) they can crash into you
      3) or they can go home.

      Hi Isayas Hailu - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. And there are closed captions on the video which will help. If there isn't closed caption, drop me a note and I'll get those done for you my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
