I learned to drive later than most (at 27) because of crippling driving anxiety I have. I struggled to even drive around an empty parking lot. Not many people talk about this because, for most, driving has become an everyday thing and they don't understand but there are those of us that still struggle. I just wanted to let fellow anxiety sufferers who may be watching this video know that it is possible. I had trouble even sitting in the parked car and today I passed my test on the first try. I was anxious about it but i did it and you can too. So I wanted to come back to this video and say thank you Rick for making such a comprehensive and encouraging video and addressing something that most people don't. It's comforting to know I am not alone in my fears.
Hi JessEmily16 - that is a awesome news. Thank you for letting us know. I'm sure you're having a big celebration, and it is well deserved owing to the challenges that you have overcome. You are so awesome! Congratulations!!!! I'm 28 and I have extreme anxiety with cars! I practice drive not as much as I should but I am getting mine soon enough!!! Driving is a journey! I'm learning that and just trying to boost my own confidence!!!
I'm 28, I have to get my license in a few days before my permit expires. I'm a good driver according to everyone else but unresolved fears have held me back.
Thanks. That really does help a little. I'm 29 and still struggling to make left and right turns. I hope one day I will feel confident behind the wheel.
1. Be comfortable ( wear comfortable clothes, sit properly - adjust sit properly and seat belt ) 2.Clean your vehicle. 3.Simply sit in the car and get familiar with the controls, do this two or times a day for 5 mins. 4. Eliminate noise in the vehicle ( Phone, stereo etc on silent mode ) Ask passengers not to talk. 5. Breathe deeply from the abs, visualize yourself driving well, remember the mantra -I CAN DO THIS and tense muscles for 5 sec and release to relax your muscles/body ( while sitting not driving ) It takes time to build a skill and you can't become Bruce Lee overnight. 6. Progressive steps and reward yourself for your little steps. Even sitting in the vehicle. Start with parking area, then little areas around the house and so on, give yourself credit for the small victories. Enjoy the journey. 7. Most important, driving is a social activity, there is peer pressure and honking gives anxiety.Focus on what you are doing since there is pressure put on you by other drivers, quieten that negative voice in your head and ask people in the car to talk less. If you get into a situation you can't handle, stop and take a break, put the parking lights on, get out if needed, and then go on.Ignore them honking etc. 8. For new drivers, spend some time with route plan to avoid getting lost which causes anxiety. 9.Work with someone you trust. Instructor who work with senior citizens or go to a counselor. Having listed them, please do listen to him, he is really good, kind and well spoken.
Hi Zoya194 - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your most lovely comment and endorsement. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test Did not expect an acknowledgement at all. Thank you so much. I have always have a bad bad fear about driving. Am learning with an instructor now and today is day four but I have been watching a video of yours per day for clarity. I live in India and the traffic here is not easy. The fear makes it worse but am trying. One step at a time. Thank you so much for everything you do.
Thanks, I am an instructor, and always looking to improve my teaching - I listed the bullet points, and you took more time for the details list, thanks! (however, I never saw #8, it wasn't there - I looked 3 times, he skipped it? Although this 26 min. video could have been covered in less time - say 13 mins.? A bit too lengthy for me.
Yes he is kind that comes through and is really helpful to put you at ease and make you feel like you can do this and that having anxiety doesn't make you defective. :)
I've had a fear of driving most of my life (I'm 29) and was terrified to do it. For the past year and a half I decided it was time and just passed my road test today (the week before my 30th birthday!). I watched many of your videos leading up to the test and I thank you for everything.

I know that driving at night as a new driver is dangerous but It actually reduces my anxiety. Too many people during the day and I feel self conscious when people are watching me so at night all those problems are fixed lol
Hi earthybird - thank you for your wonderful comment. Actually, driving at night is not really that much more dangerous than most other times. It's only fatigue that you have to be conscious: ruclips.net/video/rkx93x-hXV8/видео.html And if driving at night gives you some anonymity, than by all means drive at night. Smart Drive Test i’m from North Alabama! i drove with three other people in my driver’s ed class. this was my second time taking the exam. (i had to wait until after the Fourth of July break was over) I happened to drive during rush/lunch hours. My anxiety is one thing that was somewhat seized throughout the test. How about the air doesn’t work in the car and the heat index today was 104. Endurance is key. Thank you for all your help!

I'm nearly 27 and I'm finally in a place in life where I'm really backed into a corner and HAVE to overcome this. Something that wasn't mention in this video that I've found extremely helpful is making a huge list of all the reasons I want to overcome my driving anxiety. Examples on my list are being able to drive and visit friends and family alone, driving myself to appointments, to work, to get ice cream, to go hiking solo, etc. I keep the list in the car so that I can reference it when I'm feeling the anxiety peak while on a driving excursion (parked of course lol don't read while you drive). It helps to have a reminder of WHY I'm doing something that creates so much fear for me. I have a separate list of all the practical driving goals I want to overcome in steps in order of easy to hard. For me, easy is driving anywhere that's within 10 minutes from my house, such as my local grocery store. Medium is a drive to the town adjacent to me which is roughly 45 minutes away on an easier highway. Hard is something extreme like a road trip or taking the freeway, or driving in a big city or places I'm completely unfamiliar with. I like to reference this list to help me keep track of where I am with my confidence in certain categories and to pick out new challenges as I become more comfortable. My newest challenge is going to be a 20-30 minute drive to my brother's house. If y'all haven't tried this already, I hope that if you do, it will help! We got this. We can do hard things!

All the best, Cheers Rick PS - see this vid: ruclips.net/video/sWRSNB1iiuQ/видео.html PPS - you'll most likely have a different examiner on the next attempt.
you can do this. I failed a closed course test , and the next two tests also failed. I didn't drive for awhile. I even took a driving school! They did amazing with making me feel comfortable and the simple tasks of driving. But I am now getting over my fear and taking a other school before taking another test. we can do this you just have to make sure you have someone teaching you that wants to help you succeed and believes in. you! and most importantly believe in yourself even if it's hard to. ❤️
You aren't a loser. You're a person in the modern age attempting to control a machine that propels you. People 250 years ago couldn't even dream of such a thing. Think positively. Did you hurt or kill someone? Did you crash into another car? No? You're a winner.
I failed mine two times. The first one was failing to parallel park the second one was mishearing the examiner. I thought she wanted me to turn left but she actually was saying a street name. I feel so bad specially because my sister got her license the first time. I keep comparing myself to her. I am not scared about myself but I’m scared I’ll get other people hurt. But just an hour ago I drove good. Nobody honked at me and I did not cut corners (only few mistakes and hesitation). Tomorrow is my third try and I am hoping to get my license to get rid of the stress I’ve been feeling.
I used visualization, breathing tips and repeating "I can be confident and safe driver" tip yesterday and passed my driving test. Thank you again. This video is very helpful. God bless

@@smartdrivetest I agree. Thank you so much for this. People make it seem like I am the most anxious driver they ever seen so it helps to know I am not alone. I am getting better. This video was helpful.
Being a little nervous when you're a new driver is actually a good thing because it forces you to be careful of all of your driving instead of going on autopilot. The problem of course is when you're so nervous that you're not paying attention.
this video was soooo helpful to me im 25 and everyone around me been pressuring me about getting my license and i have a big fear of driving i have my permit but never tried for my license but today i put the fear of driving to rest and i will go try for my license and not give up ever until i receive them thanks for posting this video it helped so much may god bless you

Shalyn you and I are in the same situation...I'm 25 and still have my learner's permit...I am ready to get my driver's license now...scheduled to take it on September 6
I had a fear of driving. Mainly because my mom always yelled for everything and I got more scared of her rather than driving itself. I told her I’d learn on my own. Told her she was fired from instructing me and got mad at me but after that, I was able to drive on my own. I am a lot more relaxed. Been driving for a year now. I am finally confident enough to take my driving test. The only thing that stresses me out is the paper work.
I love this video because it addresses the emotional and psychological aspect of driving which is rarely addressed in such a clear and encouraging way. As a side note, I agree that Hendrix was the greatest guitarist ever :)
Hi Brian - Thank you for your comment and your kind words. And yes, Hendrix was one of the greatest. I'm particularly fond of his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock in 1969. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Rick, I dropped a comment on a different video of yours, about how one should go about merging onto a heavily congested freeway, with very little room or, "gap" (you said that you'd be doing one demonstrating it soon) I've nothing to say about driving here, I just wanted to say that, I'm a musician (a guitarist) and YES, James Marshall Hendrix was indeed one of (if not the) greatest electric guitar player of all times, you & Brian have excellent taste!
I cried after my first real driving lesson that wasn't in a parking lot. The biggest anxiety for me is the feeling that people are judging how slow I'm going or how I'm operating the vehicile. I know that with time and experience things will get better.
They are probably used to going over the speed limit prolly 5 to 10. They're not used to following the law if your prepping for ur test ignore them your actually in the right if Goin 5 below or speed limit
@@HisSacredLovecongratulations. I’m taking driving lesson and I can’t wait to finally be able to take my test. I have rode public transportation for so long and I’m just ready to get me a car.
Just follow the speed limit or rate of traffic, so long as you're not out there crawling, make them wait behind you no matter how much they honk. Those tend to be the people who cause accidents, because they are not following traffic laws (like slowing down and maintaining distance from the vehicle in front of you)
I've always had driving anxiety (age 26 now) but needed my license for work; I've been unemployed for some time now. I failed my first road test and beat myself up about it but your videos encouraged me to believe in myself and try again. Passed on my second try today, don't know if I could've done it without your help. Thanks for being there, Rick, and for having empathy.

Something I just found that took me right back to normal. Years ago I broke a shock on a bridge and anxiety has gotten worse with driving since. My Dr prescribed me Aderall 10mg xr at first then 15mg, and I swear it was like turning on a switch, I instantly lost my anxiety... I would never have believed it, but... it's true. It worked for me, I do not know if it will work for you, but it's worth a try...
Thank you Rick for this video! I suffered from fear and anxiety after a crash. The two people were charged with reckless driving, and the firefighters had told me that I did a great job driving in avoiding further problems and that I was driving defensively. However, I did not get into a car for five years after the accident. Two years ago, I called my old driving instructor, who is excellent, and got back behind the wheel with him every week, and I always watch your videos, they are excellent. I am going back to renew my G2, and then proceed with the full G. Your videos are amazing, and I always watch them. Thanks for these tips!!

try having anxiety and having all of the need and want to learn how to drive , and having the person that's teaching you how to drive yell at you and say your dumb because they've already told you once how to do it , when you make a mistake .....stressful!
Oh man, i know what you mean by anxiety. i exited the highway three times by accident. was too focused on making sure i didn't get too close to the cars in front of me, and ended up following them :(
I went through the same thing with my drivers instructor, she yelled while I was on the highway. she pushed on my leg constantly making me push the gas more and kept telling me I was failing. I take my next test in about 2 weeks & I honestly am not ready. I get chills whenever I think about getting behind the wheel.
i know how you feel! i have anxiety and im so nervous and anxious to learn how to drive, still am even though i got my permit and im 25, 26 in March next month and i have been learning to drive for a couple of weeks by an instructor and then with my mom and it is even more stressful and nervous cause my mom overreacts and use like strong gestures and yells at me and not being calm like my instructor so i get more anxious you know? even though i have anxiety (not only just cause of driving, practicing to drive, or going to take the driver test soon, but it is one of my symptoms of Growth Hormone Deficiency, so i want to drive cause it would help me get to places etc. but i have these irrational thoughts for when i drive etc, and so makes me uncomfortable to drive and even i dont want to drive, it is like 50/50 i want and don't want to drive, but i have no choice! i understand and relate to you! we can do this!!!! (sorry for the negativity!!)
That’s what happened to me exactly too! My dad made the experience terrifying and even though it’s been many years, I still have some trauma from that. I do drive regularly but it’s taken me many years of driving alone to build up my confidence. I still have severe anxiety if I have a passenger.
Exactly what I’m going through right now. I’ve been practicing with my dad and when I had my first in car I had a really degrading instructor. I cancelled the upcoming ones with him because he gave me so much anxiety and made me feel so bad about my driving skills. I’m nervous for my upcoming in cars in a month because I don’t want another mean instructor.
I'm 33 years old and this fear has kept me from driving for so long. I learned how to drive in an empty parking lot got my permit but my fear of going out in the road is my fear. I always have those negative thoughts that I'm going to kill someone or kill myself. one day I started driving everything was good. I was driving for a almost 2 weeks and one day my anxiety got bad I ran into an apt storage. Nothing and no one where injured. But that scared me and now my fear is bad I have to depend on my husband for everything. I'm getting old and I fear this will never go away.
Hi Makeuplover - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and confession. Remember the 4 most powerful words in the English language my friend: "I CAN DO THIS!" Approach your driving in smaller increments until you're getting less and less anxious. The more exposure you get, the less anxiety you're going to have . Remember FDR: "The only thing to fear, is fear itself. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Fear is only there because you are not sure of what you are doing, i suggest that you take private courses with a good driving instructor that will show you everything so you'll be less scared. Even just one course to try is worth it! I learned driving with instructor since neither my family or friends wanted to teach me. I took at least 15 hours with them and learned a lot, got enough courage to go for exam, bought a car and drive all in a period of 2-3 months. One of my first drives is in the highway at night cos there's less people and i needed to practice for a trip. I would never get this point if i learned to drive with families or friends, it doesn't give the same results and they do scare me more than they teach me. But instructors are calm, they build your confidence and they have a professional teaching approach. Anyway, you have to conquer your fear with knowledge and experience, you need a professional driving help to be beside you, guide you in your babysteps then after, you can slowly fly in your own with confidence!
@@mssn3166 I hesitated taking classes with instructors because its so expensive but it really is worth it! driving with friends is fine but better with a professional
@@mssn3166 wow congrats my husband is teaching me and he's getting frustrated and it's just making me nervous so ig it's better to get some practice with a instructor because I'm sure they wouldn't be shouting at you smh
I failed my drivers test twice between the ages of 19 and 21 . I didn’t provide my self with a lot of practice like I should have . But what got me the most is driving with a complete stranger whose basically checking out the way you drive and if your safe at it . Both of my driving instructors were sorta mean .. had kind of an attitude and not a good vibe ... it really through me off and the whole entire time I was completely nervous . Made many mistakes . Wasn’t a good feeling at all . Now Being 23 almost 24 with no license or permit yet cause it expired . For this new year ima gonna try My hardest to study and pass . And pray that I pass both permit and road test . I also feel more mature then I was at 19 and earlyyyy 20s .

I just turned 33, and have really bad driving anxiety to the point where ill do anything to avoid it. Im terrified of making a stupid, dangerous mistake. I learned to drive when I was 17 and the instructor would constantly yell at us if we made any mistake, i have also had a few people who have taken me driving yell at me as well so I am terrified of making a mistake. I think i have rebooked my G2 test about 50 times of not more... I have my road test in 2 weeks and i am terrified, and I keep avoiding going out to practice because of this fear. I'll do anything from starting a complex recipes so i can't leave the house to drinking a beer way too early just so i don't have to drive that day and 9/10 times when someone asks me if I want to go out a practice driving I ALWAYS have an excuse not too (cant find my wallet, its too rainy outside etc) I am hoping i can just suck it up and practice enough to pass my road test in 2 weeks. I know how to drive and control a car, def need practice parking and doing manouvers and stuff but those are the hardest for me. I feel like i get way to overwhelmed once i have to start doing turns or driving in parking lots/busy intersections and such and thats when i start making the biggest mistakes. Thank you for all the tips in your video, i am going to start incorporating them in hopes I start feeling a little better while driving.
Hi Nancy Jane - you inspire other smart drivers my friend. You recognize the challenge, but are going to do it anyway. Another suggestion is to do shorter times in the vehicle. Just do 10 minutes. When you get through that 10 minutes, stop, take a breath and congratulate yourself. Take a short break if you need to. But when you're ready do another 10 minutes. Nothing succeeds like success. You can do this! Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

I learned to drive when I was 33. I tried when I was 17 but shut down after having an unpleasant experience with my teacher. Years later, I got the nerve to get driving classes and a license. I was getting the hang of it until a car crash happened (my ride got her car crashed; I was the passenger with the most injuries). After that, 3 years went by before I got behind the wheel, and now circumstances have pushed me into moving the car again. So I’ve been practicing and getting back out there. Just a month ago I was scared of driving the car, but fear in me, I told myself I had to, went into that car, prayed and drove it out at night around my neighborhood; now I’m driving my mother to her appointments) If I can do it, absolutely anyone can. I do feel anxious, but I tell myself I am the vehicle. My brother taught me, that you are the vehicle. And I tell myself that I am in control, and that I am becoming an excellent driver, no matter what it feels like. I also play soothing music and pray before I go out on the road. And I wear my favorite shoes (old beaten up but ultra comfy flats) which help me feel the pedals and drive with comfortable feet. I also try to avoid caffeine before I drive; to me, it’s akin to not drinking and driving; caffeine can make you jittery and anxious. I eat something nutritious that gives me an energy boost and adjust my seat and mirrors and scout the area before I get behind the wheel. I am more mindful now about driving than I was before the accident when I was enjoying the thrill of driving but not being mindful of the dangers and risks, and how important it is to be a defensive driver. Driving IS a social experience and I get nervous when I have to interact with other drivers, especially at left turns and 4-way stops. Honking is one of my pet peeves too. But I Breathe deep, speak my affirmations and cut out distractions. Be a mindful driver and become the best driver you know. You can do it! Thank you for existing. 👑
Hi Rick! I just passed my full license test today after failing twice. I thought I will never make it due to extreme nervousness. I always feel like giving up but few days before sitting my 3rd attempt, I watched your videos which helped me a lot to be more confident and positive. I cleaned my car very well which gave me more comfort and peace of mind and always have an affirmations like " I can do this...I'm a safe driver"...They really worked. Thanks a lot! All the best!

My test is coming up this Friday, I failed twice and almost gave up after a while, but watching these videos and seeing these comments make me feel confident I’m going to pass this time and ace this thing!!
I test tomorrow and I've been practicing on my learner's permit for 2 years and Im still nervous your videos have helped me so much I just pray I put everything you've taught me to use on the road test. Wish me luck !
Hi Jessica Scott - Thank you for your comment. You're going to do awesome. Remember to breath; that will cause your body to relax. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick
I am about to turn 28. I got my license when I was about 20 or 21. First time I drove a car I was 16. Why am I here? Because even though I got my license I have not put it to good use because of my fear. I had a bad driving instructor who would yell, and my dad who would also teach me how to drive would also yell and I was always tense. As soon as I would get in his pick up I would feel my heart racing. And I avoided driving any chance I could. I drove literally a handful of times over the last couple of years but then stopped, Something I now regret. Have i continued driving i probably would have been more confident and I’d be driving on my own by now. I hate asking for rides. Starting the new year,as my resolution, I will get back in the road. I know how to drive, I know how to control a car, I just need more practice. More like Pick up where I left off. My husband is an aggressive driver, often making dangerous maneuvers while we’re in the car with our small daughter. And I’m always getting upset at him. He thinks he’s the king of the road and everyone must stop and give him the right of way at all costs. He’s my husband, and I love him, but there are people who do not belong on the road and he happens to be one of them. That’s another reason I must get back on the road. I was always afraid of making dangerous mistakes. I have never been in an accident, although I have witnessed them. I know what are some of the things I need to work on like parallel parking and safely making a left turn. I’d be so cautious that I’d sometimes hesitate to make a turn because i wasn’t sure if an oncoming car would be coming too fast that they’d eventually catch up on me and crash, I’ve been watching your videos and will continue to do so once I start driving again. I don’t want to rely on rides anymore. P.s. do you think you can make a video on how to drive through narrow streets, especially when there are parked cars and there’s another car coming? I’ve had a lot of trouble with this when I’d drive, and I would drive a Dodge Ram pick up truck so I would also get anxious and not know what to do. Any tips especially when driving large pick up trucks?
Hi there - good on you for getting back to driving this year and overcoming your fear of driving. Starting with that mindset is an incredible achievement. Rick, yesterday I watched this video and today I passed my Massachusetts road test! I heard your voice saying "remember to breathe!" as I completed my maneuvers one step at a time, and it was no problem - even though I was super nervous, and driving an unfamiliar vehicle (the RMV is supplying the cars during Covid-19) with a pretty harsh instructor. I just want to sincerely thank you for all your help. Your videos on parallel parking and 3-pt turns made both of those maneuvers WAY easier for me, and my stepdad said that after practicing parallel parking with me so many times, now he does it my way (well, your way haha!) too because it's so much more effective. Anyway, this was a super long comment but thank you! And happy holidays! :)

Thanks, Rick! "I CAN DO THIS" these four words have saved my life!!! I was so anxious this week about my driving test, and I have no cure to release my pressure. LUCKILY I found your video yesterday and keep telling myself "I CAN DO THIS". This is the most critical strategy that leads to my success. Just passed my driving test today!! So happy and Thank you so so much for your video! :)

I have my permit test in August, but I've been binge watching your driving videos (as well as POV test drives of my dream cars LOL), and they are helping me reduce my anxiety! I am 22, and I've put off driving because of the fear of the "unknown", as well as distrust of other drivers. But, I'm pushing myself to learn more than ever not because I'm gonna have to possibly move to a different state for work. I'm gonna be completely alone, so I'm gonna need to drive myself around, drive to buy groceries, drive to work, etc... God bless you for your help! Much love 🙏
UPDATE YALL: I got my permit in October 🎉 I’ve driven 3 times since. I would go around my neighborhood at night. At first, it was smooth bc I would just do left U-turns in a quiet street. But now, I’m working on turning right in a street with a stoplight and I got yelled at by my mom for the first time 😅😭 My legs were shaking so bad when I did that right turn route 3 times. To add to the anxiety, a neighbor went into the middle of the road and I had to brake so suddenly. The neighbor walked up and close to my car. I thought he was gonna ask for a cigarette or something. I rolled the window down, and then he and his partner were like “Do you need help? Are you following me?” Me and my mom were SHOCKED because we didn’t even see him as we were driving around and practicing. I didn’t see his partner but I had the sense that she was filming in case we were dangerous people. My mom and I were like “No, I’m just a student driver, I’m practicing!”… after that, I just kept thinking about it as I was driving. I wish it was something to laugh about, but I feel bad that he probably had a lot of anxiety and I hated the feeling of being accused of being somebody we clearly weren’t :( But anyhoot, I’m gonna brush the dust off my feet and continue on bc I’m motivated to get my license so I can drive my unsaved friends to church 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I just took my road test today, I was honestly quite anxious and worried but it's videos like these I have watched to take the edge off and because of these and support from family and friends, I passed on my first attempt in many years since I gave up driving when I was in high school. Now it feels so much better knowing I can drive on my own. If someone like myself suffers anxiety, YOU CAN and DO have the will and means to be a safe and confident driver.

my parents never taught me how to drive, i think that is where part of my fear comes from. I am now 28 and STILL do not drive. I have had my permit like 8 times but no one will help me drive. I don't have a car so I have no way to learn other than other people who are unwilling. When I am behind the wheel I am always scared and anxious, it is worse when someone is behind me or i am in between cars.
Hi romanticshadow s - Thank you for your comment. If you are anxious while driving, I would counsel you to get some driving lessons from an instructor that works with seniors or other's that have driving challenges. If you're working with others that aren't teachers, it's only going to exacerbate your own tension around driving. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hello Rick, I am turning 39 in a week and a half and just learning to drive. It has been a rocky road for me. I have never struggled with anxiety before and have a very professional career as a social worker and paralegal however, driving triggered something inside me every time I got behind the wheel. I even paid for lessons which were a waste of money because I would freeze up, and be unable to continue with an overwhelming fear and sense of emotion. I failed my first driving exam within 15 min because I jammed up and forfeited myself. I have worked on those feelings and been practice driving with my brother to prepare for my test. I have come a long way over this past year and will be going for my road test on December 11th which is my birthday. I was so pleased to find this video which really helped! I have been utilizing the tips and remembering I CAN DO THIS!!! I can't wait to drive my car on my own and the sense of freedom it will bring to my life! THANK YOU!

This is a "FANTASTIC" video. I wrote all the steps down, some of them I do naturally. I just started driver training a couple of weeks ago with Strowmatt Rehabilitation based in Houston, TX. Some things I know already and some things I don't. I am a quadruple amputee: All 5 fingers from both hands and both feet from the ankles on both legs. I wear prosthesis on both legs. I use a quad fork adaptive steering device for control of the steering wheel. I use my right leg for gas and brake. I am grateful for finding your channel. You have helped me already in more ways than one. My Road Test is on August 30th, 2017. I have been allocated 40 hours for driver training. I fight nervousness EVERYDAY I am training because I want to do well and be under control of my emotions and abilities....Wish me luck....Thank You again.

Rick, nice tips. I work with ‘driving anxiety’ clients and tip #10 is ‘the correcting of misinformation’, which in my opinion is the biggest cause of driving fears. This is because of much of what we are taught about driving actually creates many of the (mostly irrational) fears.

I am 57 years old. I lived in a foreign country from the age 17-present. I did not learn to drive because I was told that women don’t have to drive, and the public transportation system took me wherever I needed to go. I have just returned to the US and have just started learning to drive. I enrolled in a driving school and explained my background on zero experience to my instructor. However, she did nothing that helped me reduce my anxiety. In fact after just four hours of instruction, she was very critical that I was still very nervous. I therefore turned to your video for help, and your “ free” advice is helpful and very much appreciated.

Dont be discouraged if you fail! I’ve failed 3x 😅, trust me keep trying it’s all going to be worth it. The first time i failed it felt like the end of the world, but just learn from your mistakes. Remember and listen to what the instructor says you failed on, don’t take it personal like i did lmao you got this!❤️
I had been hit from behind on the highway (I was at a stop because of traffic and he was doing 90km, until he realized and slammed on his breaks.) I was 4 months pregnant and my 8 year old was in the back seat. I'm always terrified of driving in heavy traffic and no longer drive on the highway. This video helped a lot with becoming confident again. I also found car crash videos helped. I watched them and saw the mistakes people can make that cause an accident. That, for me, helped me notice and pay attention to vehicles around me more. These tips were great, thank you.
Hi Ashton - Thank you for sharing your story of incredible courage. As parents we would do anything to keep our children safe. It is an incredible feat for you to learn to drive and drive well my friend. You inspire other smart drivers. All the best, Cheers Rick
This video and the comment section makes me feel so much better knowing that i'm not the only one getting a drivers license later in life... nor the only person with crippling anxiety around it. I feel much more encouraged to learn to drive now. Thank you.
I stumbled upon your channel while I was checking videos about tips in driving and how to overcome this nervousness I’m 27 now and I just got my learner’s permit. I’m now binge watching almost all of your driving videos and I am comforted by your words. I was practicing with a family member and I got yelled at the road, I was pretty calm and confident before someone shouted “Get off the road!” so I got nervous and I recovered after a day of watching your channel. I’m circling around our neighborhood and hopefully next week I can drive on the main road, then hire an instructor so I can practice on the freeway. Thank you for all your tips, Rick! :)

Thank you for these videos. I haven't driven in awhile. I got my license around 32/33. I am 39. And late December, someone gave me their old car. I have always dealt with anxiety but my anxiety went through the roof. But I keep a driving practice log and I take it out mostly every day to persevere. I can only do around the house for now and mostly my brother or young nephew is in vehicle with me. I have been challenging myself to drive to like bus station and Saturday I ran errands that stretched me a bit. I had my brother and nephew in car. I was nervous but starting out I felt a little excited and prepared as I mapped out my first stop. My brother is patient and a great help as he helped me when I had some imperfections. I think I have performance anxiety too, worrying about what others think. I have gone out around house by myself a few times to practice. I drove to my local church Sunday by self. But I dont know if it was my boots or my fear but I struggle with accelerating properly. I managed to accelerate well when I had to drive to train station due to my brother making me almost late for it. I dont know why I am so afraid. Around when I got my license I drove from Chicago to Schaumburg with my friend in her car because she didnt want to drive on expressway. I did well and was even confident. So I feel a bit discouraged I have all this fear.
The man in the video is very comforting and calming to me for whatever reason. I feel like he does a great job of making all of his points, but not being overwhelming. Also the vibes this video gives off are very reassuring and I love the “I can do this!” mantra. Great video for someone who’s working on overcoming their driving anxiety (me lol)
Hi Madeline Claire - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. We're happy to hear we could help out. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick PS - Yes, you can do it my friend! ;-)
I failed mine this morning within 10 minutes due to a stupid mistake. While leaving the course, I drove straight past the sign I was supposed to turn on. I suffer from severe anxiety and I was so nervous that I was having muscle spasms and my face was twitching. I got tunnel vision. I was extremely embarrassed but I rescheduled for tomorrow and I'm going to try some of these tips to calm down and have confidence. Something I find that helps me is laying out exactly what I'm going to do, e.g "I will turn my right signal on, check my mirrors and blind spot, then safely move over." Watching videos others have posted of their road test and laying out exactly what I would do when the examiner gives the instruction also helps. It reaffirms my knowledge and gives me confidence. The worst thing you can do is give up!
Hi xerneas - sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. For many, it is the fear and the nerves that make the test difficult. Knowing exactly what to expect is one of the keystones of "adult education." And your are right: you only fail when you stop trying. You are going to do this. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
That’s a great idea, to say what your going to do. I’ve tried it while preparing for my driving test and I felt calmer. Thanks for putting this idea out there.
Thank you for this video! I had my license few weeks ago and still anxious every time I'm practicing to drive. Thank you because at least I have been understood. (what I felt whenever I drive). It really takes time and patience to be confident in driving. Hope I can overcome my anxiety and be a defensive driver soon.

Hello Rick, Exactly, It's a thrilled event... Other than that at the end of testing, I got a compliment from the examiner for performing such a perfect Shoulder Check he observed during the test. You know what. Those are inspired from your Mirror Signal Shoulder Check videos.... To all others competent Smart Driver viewer... Keep watching the videos and I bet you are on your way to succeed the road test for sure. 加油吧!Thanks again Rick!
Hi Yansen Suteja - thank you for your stellar comment and endorsement. It truly inspires and fires my work. All the best in your driving career my friend. Cheers Rick

I failed my driving tests 3 times five years ago, I'm back training again but my instructor keeps telling me I'm very anxious and I hold my steering wheel very tightly, I need to relax more and I'm working on it, wish me luck on this one!
Great video. I have my test tomorrow and am so so nervous. That feeling of butterflies in my stomach is what am feeling now 😬. Trying to stay calm calm . Thanks for such great content

Start small (backing out of the driveway) and start slow step by step (Get out of the driveway, Get to the first stop sign, slowly process forward, and take it at a slow pace until you feel comfortable). Drive in an open deserted parking lot to get yourself familiar with the functions of the vehicle and become comfortable with driving behind the wheel first.
Hello Ricky I made it on my first road test attempt 2weeks ago. I have my driving license now. Thank you so much for the videos it indeed had a great impact on me. Bless you for your free tutorials.

Hi Rick. Unfortunately I failed my G road test because the examiner said I was driving too slow therefore impeding traffic. I was just a tad bit nervous but she made it worse when she yelled at me that I was going too slow.Everything else was good; 3 point turn etc. I will continue watching your vids because I learned a lot. Thank you.

I’m so glad I found this video. My test is may 27 and I’m so anxious. I’m 27 years old and fear and anxiety has kept me from getting my license. My friend was killed when her car was hit by a drunk driver two days after we graduated high school and I’ve been terrified ever since. Hi Rick, I have been driving for three months on my own since passing my road test. I might have asked you this elsewhere but I was still wondering if you could demonstrate how to deal with road ragers who pressure you into doing something unsafe? A video with different scenarios, such as being honked at a milisecond after the light turns green at a busy interesection, for slowing down seeing an amber light a car length or two away, and doing the speed limit for parks and school zones. I'm sure we all hear about staying calm and disengaging, but seeing someone demonstrate those attitudes in those scenarios will help heaps! Thank you for reading.
Hi Bellaboo - thanks for your comment. I haven't included those specific scenes in a video, however, I have made this video which may give you some direction: ruclips.net/video/HABPPIUhIIE/видео.html One of the most important techniques is to focus on what you're doing. I know it's intimidating, but take a breath and focus on your driving. Other drivers have 3 choices: 1) they can wait for you; 2) they can go home; or 3) they can crash into you. And it's unlikely that they're going to do number 3. So, just remember to breath--maybe cuss under your breath--and then carry on. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Prayer for passing driving test Lord Jesus your are the one true God. You said ask and you will receive father I come today before you to ask that I pass my driving test on my 7th attempt my father give me the spirit of direction, let me be observant and most importantly let me be calm. Give me faith oh father the kind of faith only Abraham can boast of oh my lord let me have a good examiner this time who will put me at ease bless the roads bless my manoeuvres and bless me with a pass. I ask this through Christ who strengthens me. Amen
Thank you so much, Rick! I watched your videos obsessively for the past 24 hours, this one especially, and finally passed my fourth attempt at my road test today. I kept yelling in my head during the test 'I can do this! I am a safe driver!' and it helped. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Very professional, one technic from me how to overcome fear, is calculate how much money you will pay if you hit someone by law. If it is a lot of money, don't know why but it help to remove fear of driving itself

It might seem counter productive but I was doing all the things you mention plus watching dash cam videos on RUclips and lots videos of accidents. It may not work for everyone but being exposed to accidents made me less anxious. I believe it works the same way as exposure therapy. Identifying specific fear and then exposing yourself to them on your terms was crucial for me. Fear of driving fast ? Start by going faster on a bicycle and then work up your speed in a car. Fear of not knowing where to go ? Study the route beforehand and use google street view to follow the road on your laptop. Also not listening or friends and family helped. People who don’t have anxiety don’t understand it so will just make you feel worse about yourself (“this is easy”, “there’s nothing to be scared of” - had the opposite effect on me) . You need self confidence so remember to do it on your terms and at your pace. You’re the boss when you’re driving !
I'd just like to say thank you very very much for your video. I've always wondered why it took me so long to learn to drive but I just recently found out that I have anxiety for it. I'm 52 and is tired of not doing it all along wondering why I'm not out there too. The Bruce Lee reference was good for me that even he took awhile to learn karate. I love Bruce and I'm such a perfectionist I judge myself hardly. Thank you for saying that, it made a difference for me.

Im 29 and same I'm learning to drive late due to anxiety but I want to overcome it and stay confident so I can drive comfortable
1. Be comfortable ( wear comfortable clothes, sit properly - adjust sit properly and seat belt )
2.Clean your vehicle.
A bit too lengthy for me.
what if that tutor scold you alot?

Me too! Lol
Congratulations

Completely agree! Thinking about the why and the reward of seeing friends and family at the destination also helps me.
Great
Thank you very much for this!
Best,
Doug
I passed my driver's test today! Thank you so much, Mr. Rick! And, good luck to anyone who is about to take a road test.

Thank you so much for your videos. I had anxiety as a late season driver (28). Hearing you tell your story gave me courage to get behind the wheel. I also had a terrible driving instructor that yelled at me. Watching your videos and watching you calmly explain why you were doing helped me tremendously. I finally passed my driver's test. Thank you so much!

I did my driving test today and failed because of anxiety, I was close so having a mental breakdown. I feel like such a loser right now but I know that I'll have to overcome it and try my best. Thank you so much for this helpful video
Hi Kim Seokjin - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

PPS - you'll most likely have a different examiner on the next attempt.
you can do this.
You’re not a loser you’re amazing . I’m working on getting mine and I’m already 29 . It’s a big responsibility, stay safe out there :) 🚗
I failed mine two times.

Did you get your license?
Did you pass?
How is your driving now?
I just got my license today and I was so nervous I messed up a little bit still got an 85 I am grateful I prayed and self spoke positive

Hi Christine Attard - Apologies for the late response. We're so happy to hear that you're moving forward! If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
try having anxiety and having all of the need and want to learn how to drive , and having the person that's teaching you how to drive yell at you and say your dumb because they've already told you once how to do it , when you make a mistake .....stressful!
It was just a set back ..it happens when we are getting better its part of the process so keep on driving don't give in
@@mssn3166 wow congrats my husband is teaching me and he's getting frustrated and it's just making me nervous so ig it's better to get some practice with a instructor because I'm sure they wouldn't be shouting at you smh
Now
Being 23 almost 24 with no license or permit yet cause it expired .

I just passed my G at 35 years old the road test was the most difficult experience of my adult life the anxiety was there for the whole test so I basically had to battle through it. It was insane but in the end I demonstrated such observational applied knowledge but it didn’t come without terrible physical symptoms
I’m 20 and have my permit. I’ve been in several car crashes and have severe anxiety when I comes to driving. My test is in two weeks and I’ve barely been able to practice because my anxiety has been so bad. This video has helped me so much. Thank you. I hope I pass and plan on working through this within the next couple weeks leading up to my test

Congratulations
I wish it was something to laugh about, but I feel bad that he probably had a lot of anxiety and I hated the feeling of being accused of being somebody we clearly weren’t :(
But anyhoot, I’m gonna brush the dust off my feet and continue on bc I’m motivated to get my license so I can drive my unsaved friends to church 🙏🏻🙏🏻

@@smartdrivetest I am from Canada. I took a solo drive in the evening to deliver some groceries for my grandmother, a chance to feel the road for myself and to drive to my favorite coffee shop. Keep it up Rick! I give all my students homework. The homework is to watch your videos. I actually created a playlist for my students to watch. Hi Sam - thank you so much for your kind words. And thank you for promoting the videos. I am totally committed now; I bought a new camera this week, and I'm just about to shoot my first video with the new camera - very, very exciting! How's your summer there; we've had a few days of high 90°F here, so shooting has been limited to shade and the early morning and late evening. Stay well my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test, Sure Rick, no problem. Yeah, it has been in the 80's over here in NY. Not too bad. Wow, that's awesome you got a new camera. When we get something new we get excited. my parents never taught me how to drive, i think that is where part of my fear comes from.
All the best, Cheers Rick
romanticshadow s Im 32 and recently got my learnere permit for the first time. No one my parents never taught me and the same i have horrible anxienty the taught of driving makes me have a total meltdown i bought me a little old car to learn in. I have faith that i can do this
romanticshadow s keep strong bro and dont let that fear win!! I have similar situation and i understand you.. I bought my first car 2 weeks ago and i have enormous fear but i am trying to overcome it everyday and trust me every day it gets easier and simpler.. Btw i did my tests and got driving licence when i was 17yrs old but didnt drive after that for next 7 yrs.. So basically i have to learn everything again.. We just have to have faith in ourselves
romanticshadow s I feel the same. Nobody taught me how to drive and now I'm 22x
Sandra Flores yes you can
Hello Rick, I am turning 39 in a week and a half and just learning to drive.

Dont be discouraged if you fail! I’ve failed 3x 😅, trust me keep trying it’s all going to be worth it. The first time i failed it felt like the end of the world, but just learn from your mistakes. Remember and listen to what the instructor says you failed on, don’t take it personal like i did lmao you got this!❤️
😂🤣 thank you for thisss!!! I fail my first one. Felt bad, felt sad and like if it was the end of the world but I will keep trying

PS - Yes, you can do it my friend!
Hi 9w829 - thank you for your comment. You're going to be awesome. Keep breathing - deep breathing. That will force your body to relax. Good luck on your road test. Let us know how it turns out. All the best, Cheers Rick

PS - where in the world did you pass your test and are you planning any road trips to celebrate?
Thank you.
Hi Patricia Logan - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. You've got a great attitude and we're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick PS - you'll have a different examiner on the next attempt. Yelling is simply unprofessional...sorry to hear!
I’m so glad I found this video. My test is may 27 and I’m so anxious. I’m 27 years old and fear and anxiety has kept me from getting my license. My friend was killed when her car was hit by a drunk driver two days after we graduated high school and I’ve been terrified ever since. I’m certain this video will help me when I go to take my test in two weeks

Hi Rick,
I have been driving for three months on my own since passing my road test.
Prayer for passing driving test
Lord Jesus your are the one true God. Amen

Great tips! Thank you. My issue is the highways, reading the signs and the GPS at the same time. I am way more comfortable when I am alone in the vehicle, having passengers makes me so anxious. Working on it, I will put in practice your lessons. Thanks again ;)

Thank you for your helpful videos! The instructor said I was too cautious and should be more confident on my decisions but it wasn’t enough to say I’m a terrible driver. In other words... I PASSED!!!
