On road test day, your job is to take away the driving examiner's right to fail you - nothing more, nothing less. If you've practiced, that job is a simple task.
Driving is NOT a spectator sport, and you must practice to be prepared for road test day. Remember, we do what we practice, so the more you drive in preparation for your road test, the higher probability of success you are going to have on your driver's license road test day.
If you haven’t taken driver training with a driving school, be sure to hire a driving school to take you out on a practice road test.
A driving instructor will identify the gaps in your driving abilities, skills, and knowledge so you will be better prepared. Keep in mind, driving schools teach drivers how to pass a road test every day!
Importantly, if you make a mistake on the road test, move on quickly - do not dwell on the mistake. If you dwell on the mistake, your distraction will cause you to make more mistakes. And some times the driving examiner may not have even seen the mistake.
Speed and space management are the 2 biggest components of a driver's license road test. Be sure to drive the posted speed limit for the speed of the traffic flow - whichever is less. As well, stay away from other traffic, vehicles, road users, pedestrians and fixed objects.
In addition to speed and space management, observation and communication are the other two fundamental components that make up a road test. You must demonstrate to the examiner that you have a scanning pattern that allows you to interpret and predict traffic patterns.
As well, the scanning pattern is looking in the mirrors and monitoring the gauges on the dash of your vehicle.
And for the purposes of observing, you must shoulder check at least twice for every turn and lateral movement. You must shoulder check two times when making lane changes.
When communicating with other traffic, you must activate your turn signal approximately 1/2 block before making a turn.
And it is suggested that you have three flashes on the turn signal before making any lateral movement or lane changes.
To review...the 4 fundamental components of any road test are:
1) speed management
2) space management
3) observation
4) communication
Demonstrate competency in these 4 basic components of the road test, and you will have taken away the examiner's right to fail you.

I passed my test today on my first try & these are my tips.
1; STAY CALM, you would be surprised how much a few deep breathes can do for you.
2: Try to drive to your test or atleast try to drive before you take it.
3: Always make sure to shoulder check, it’s better to shoulder check more rather then not shoulder checking at all.
4: pay attention to the speed limit & how fast you are going. The reason I say this is because it’s the easiest points to not lose.
5: As Rick has suggested in videos, BACK IN to your spot at the registry if there is designated parking. It will be easier to just pull out rather than backing up.
6: If you feel like you’ve made a mistake or notice you have, DON’T DWELL ON IT! Almost everyone makes a few mistakes & it’s expected. Just focus on the rest of the test. For all you know the examiner didn’t even notice.
7: BE CONFIDENT. You can do this. & you can pass. If I can YOU can!
8: practice practice practice.

Thanks for this advice! I have my test on the 28th and im so nervous. how dooes it feel being licensed for a year now? I feel like all my nerves will go away knowing I have the license and that small mistakes are okay. I dwell on myself a lot just because i forgot to check my rear view mirror and silly things like that. anyways, these tips really do help so thanks.
@@boogiemasry3890 hey, how did it go? I have to take my test in a few hours and I’m going to drive around the area to insure that I’ve got familiar with the roads. I’ve been watching a few of these videos and they’ve helped calm my nerves, I will make an update today if I passed or not.

I just passed my road test after failing two times. Here are the Lessons I learned:
• Drive yourself to your road test! If that’s not possible, warm up an 30-45 minutes before you test. Being in that car mindset is very important to help calm nervous.
• Take your test at the same location if you do fail. The test might be the same but it will feel familiar
• Practice your driving on the roads near your road test!
• If you cant get a driving instructor, watch youtube videos on road test in your state/province or city.
• If you can get a mock road test, i recommend doing it ( you can ask the instructor if they think you are ready, and if they say you are that’s definitely a confidence booster)
• If you are worried about a skilled maneuver like Parallel parking or bay parking, do it every single day until you never make a mistake. Or do it till you know how to correct your mistakes.
• Don’t think about the things you do wrong on a road test! It will just lead you to do the wrong things! Instead of saying “ Don’t forget to stop at a red light” say “ I’m remembering to stop at a red light”.
• Lastly, remind yourself you are a good driver cause you probably are, mistakes happen. Failing a road test just means you need a little bit more practice and the more you Practice the better driver you will be. Whenever I get scared in the car I tell myself “ I’m a good driver, what i’m doing is not wrong”. Might sound dumb but if your a Anxious driver, it helps!

Pretty sure it’s illegal to drive yourself to a road test before you even get your license nibble-nuts- are you trying to get people to fail before they even get to their road-test.

I just passed my first road test yesterday after being terrified to even try for over 15 years. I still can't believe it's true! I watched so many of your videos to prepare myself and cram the week before so it was fresh in my mind. I never believed I would be brave enough :) thank you for all the information and tips and good luck to everyone here preparing for your test. And It doesn't matter if you fail; what's important is that you were brave enough to DO it.

I passed!! I swear I looked left and right so many times to make sure the driver was sick of being sure I was being cautious. My score was 92; docked points for being too close on the driver's side in reverse parking but otherwise good!

Hi Rick! I have my test scheduled tomorrow and am an extremely nervous person. It took me years to reach the point of being able to book my test and feel comfortable driving. I am of course very nervous about my test tomorrow, however I did get myself an instructor for a few practice runs and for a mock test right before the test. Your RUclips videos are the best to help out someone like me with extreme anxiety as I always need to feel prepared 100% as to not be nervous. Your mock test video has made me feel so much better. I’ve watched it a few times and pretended I was the one driving, practicing my step by steps. Looking forward to watching more of them to prepare. Thanks! You’re helping lots of people!

These videos have been my go to, I just took my test an hour ago and passed first try! Thanks for the help, definitely review this before going guys, remember to relax, don’t be nervous, when passing or turning make sure you physically move your head so they can see it and you don’t get marked down. Keep to the speed limit and don’t be so nervous that you go really slow. Always know where you’re going before you make a turn and know who has right of way always.

I was able to pass my road test last September 26, 2023 in just 1 take here in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. The instructor told me that his rating sheet was very clean because I was able to perform the road test flawlessly. I was only able to practice like 4 times before my test today. 3 from practicing once per week for 3 weeks and then the couple of hours before my actual behind the wheel test.
I was nervous because prior to the test, i was still doing some mistakes. I watched a few videos from this channel the night before and it helped me motivate myself to get past it.
I got a couple notes but regardless I was able to pass, and it would not have been possible without these videos. Thank you so much.

I was so nervous to take my driving test, I would watch your videos when I was feeling unsure and your videos were the only thing that helped my anxiety and made me feel better. I scored a 100% on the test and despite my anxiety and shaking my examiner said I did very well and must of had a lot of practice. Also your parallel parking video with cones was the only video that helped me and I got it first try on the test

I took two road test. The first was on 02/09/18 and I failed for multiple reasons despite having practice. First, when I turned right, while there was a bike lane, I failed to look over my shoulder. Second, my parallel park, while was ok, was far from the curb, and the third was because of steering control, poor maneuvers, which I couldn't see how my maneuvers could e bad until I had taken time to review after my road test was done. When I failed, I was upset and it took me time to calm down and reschedule for another road test a month and a half from my first one.
On 03/20/18, I took my second road test. Before the road test, I took on more driving lessons and I took the results of my first road test to strengthen and look at everything that I was added points for. I improved on my turns, my maneuvering had improved, and my parallel park had improved to. I want to also say that while the parallel park is tricky to do, it was easy once you understand and know what your doing. I've seen in general how to do it and tried, but I learned how to do parallel park my own way when I followed everything except that I make one revolution to the right before backing up and align my mirror with the taillight of the park car, then one revolution to the left and look at my right mirror and see if I get close to the curb. When I get close to the curb, I then stop and turn the rest of the wheel to the left and found myself at a nice gap that is about 4 to 5 inches from the curb. I practiced and learned to look over my shoulders of when I'm about to turn, and one more to just before I make the turn. I also learned from videos here on RUclips from other instructors, including Rick from Smart Drive and practiced those skills during my driving lessons. When I went to the road test site here in Laurelton, Queens New York after I did my final driving lesson on that same day as a warm up, the stress levels were high. I was nervous as I was before , but not as nervous as I was the least time. I stepped out of the car, but not allowed to go far away from it, to let the cold air cool my nerves and saw the line all the way down the park lane that they were using for the road test site. One by one, everyone was called and I was hoping to not get the same examiner from the first road test. She was critical and made me nervous. But to my surprise, she was there, but she was taking attendance for those coming to take their test. I remembered her face and I have quite a good memory LOL!
When it was finally my turn, my examiner was a guy, male, african-american who kept it professional and didn't make me nervous. You might say he was in the comfort zone in my book but kept it professional and didn't say a word throughout the road test. When I went into the car, the first thing I did was put on my seat belt. My nerves were suppressed and I was somewhat calm I made my adjustments from my mirrors to even my seat. When he told me to start the car, I started it and said "Whenever your ready and is safe, please pull out." I started with putting my brake on the brake pedal and starting the car. I placed the gear into drive, one revolution turn to the left, mirror check, shoulder check towards my left to check on any on coming traffic. When it was safe to do so, I pulled out. I made a right and signaled, mirror check, and shoulder check, and just before I was about to turn, I shoulder check again and safely executed the turn. This is how I made my turns throughout my second road test (a video(s) that I learned here from Rick on Smart Drive). I followed all traffic signals and signs. Then came the parallel park. When he told me to parallel park at a vehicle he picked, I signaled and aligned my mirror to that car. I could tell that it was the see length as the car I was i and carefully followed the proper procedure of doing a parallel park. Signal, align mirror to mirror and hold your foot on the brake, one revolution to the right, shift gear in reverse, mirror check, shoulder check, and safe to do so, release the foot on the brake. I followed everything perfectly, and I thought I heard something and felt a little thud. I thought I hit the curb, but I could tell that I didn't and when I turned all the way to the left and released the brake, I was still going back and found myself at the same good distance as I was in my parallel park. It turned out I went into a pot hole and not the curb. Then I finished the parallel park when I went forward and secured the vehicle. Afterwards we pulled out when I reversed and then set the gear to drive, signaled, one revolution to the left of the wheel, mirror check, shoulder check, and release the foot off the brake when safe to do so. Then straighten the car and proceed.
Then we went to another area and did a three point turn. I pulled over safely, i signaled and followed everything, but one minor wrong I did. In my practice, I'm perfect with a three point turn, but my nerve struck me on a part is after I reversed after checking for any oncoming traffic, I was about to signal and turn my wheel all the way to the left, and checked traffic, but released my foot off the brake when I realized the gear was still in reverse. Luckily, I realized this quickly and put my foot back on the brake and corrected it. I once again check for any traffic and proceeded to straighten my car and move forward.
We went back to the site, and of course while still following everything that I was doing and I made a safe stop and secured the vehicle. He the pulled his little computer out and for that short moment in my head I knew this as going to determine whether I passed or failed. The drum roll in my head started to play: PASS OR FAIL.
When I heard that little computer printed out my results and the paper came out, he said "You passed." I turned to him and said, "I passed?!" and he repeated himself saying you passed. He told me to sign at the line and I saw that I got 20/30 on my road test. I saw the line and saw that this paper will act as my temporary license and my photo license will come i the mail. I turned over and shook his hand and even high five him. I did apologize and told him that I know you were keeping it professional, but I was so happy. he understood and left.
The moment that I heard him said that I passed, my nerves stopped and that feeling crept in and I felt happy. I gave my instructor the thumbs up and that feeling felt surreal. I did it. You felt that you went from being a learning driver, now, you earned the right and privilege to be behind the wheel on your own. I was so happy that my instructor had to pull me out of the car from the drivers side because he had to get somewhere. I gave those who were waiting for their turn for a test, the thumbs up and told them that I passed. When he drove me home, I couldn't believe it. I did, I did it. I wrapped the receipt around my permit and even kissed it. I actually did it, I passed.
As I said that i got 20 out of 30. Two minors that I did. The first 10 points was the poor decision in traffic and it was because I was in a two way road in a residential area where I saw a truck and I slowed down and moved aside to let him passed. He was waiting there and I was uncertain if he was coming down, the examiner told me to go down. I knew it was from that part and the time, my nerve struck me back then. The second was was from the three point turn to where I made the error of keeping my gear in reverse as I mentioned before. Other than that, I did exceptionally well. I thanked my instructor and told him that I'll continue calling him for more driving and highway lessons. When I went inside my home, I found myself in a state of excitement.
First, I would like to thank you Rick on your advice for the turns and for your videos that helped me get my license. I also would like to say is that for those who just got their licenses, even if you passed the road test and earned it, keep practicing in the residential areas and take everything from the lessons you learned and practice with them. I choose to do so, even after I passed and wouldn't mind paying for more driving lessons and then highway lessons. I would also say, keep practicing with the instructor and get exposed to moderate and heavy traffic, and different weather conditions. The same with the highways too. You wanna make sure, with an instructor that you want to not only develop those driving skills under different conditions but to get the feel of what to do. So even if you don't have your own vehicle, you can still have the option of doing more driving lessons and highway lessons from a driving school. I would also ask if they do parking in the parking lot too as I would ask my instructor if he does that or if he could make an exception.
Good luck to everyone who's going to take their road test. If you fail, do't worry, its not the end of the road. You may feel upset, but don't give up. Look at everything the examiner had marked and keep practicing. And practice after you get your license and follow up on everything. I'm sorry for the long story in the comment.but I wanted to share everyone my story of what I went through. Good luck.

I said it in the story. I took my road test in Laurelton, NY in Queens. I took both of my road test there. I forgot to mention in the story at the end. I would also recommend going back to the same road test site so that at least you'll be more familiar in the area. Also, I noticed the examiners changed. I remember the examiners faces when they were there in February in my first road test and on the second one, there were different faces.
No matter who it is, don't let them make you nervous. Just calm down and try to focus on everything your doing behind the wheel. That's all. XD

The 3 point turn gets me, I never had to do this in 35 yrs of driving. I just go partially into a driveway and out again.

@@smartdrivetest yes I'm re testing. I went yesterday and failed because I went 1 K over the speed limit, right at the end of the test, could kick myself. Re test in 2 weeks, am going to go 10 under the speed limit, get marks off for going to slow but still get licence.

I did pass but got to close to curb on my parralle parking and stopped in cross walks at stop signs but in my area they r not indicated but because of ur videos I passed I am now a licensed driver and get my first car Monday 😀😀😀

Advice for future test takers:
1. Don’t be nervous
2. Don’t look at the examiner and focus on the road, signs, and speedometer
3. Be confident, but not cocky.

The hardest part of my test was others drivers not following the rules of the road. But I got it done and I'm driving my Taxi by Spring 2021. Rick, passed my drivers test first time because of your videos. I’m not a new driver either! I was living abroad during the pandemic and my license had expired. My state laws made me go back and take the written test, get a permit, and take the road test again. Too bad they couldn’t make me 16 again. I am scheduled to take my driving test next week and I am ALREADY getting very anxious about the whole thing; I've never felt more inadequate for a test in my life. I've been "learning" how to drive for years but I feel that my nerves just take over me just in general, let along driving for a test. If I fail, I just don't know how I will recover again to do it again....Driving has become so emotionally consuming for me.

The greatest lesson I have learned in life so far is to be patient, respectful, and CONFIDENT. confidence is key. Of course, you can cross the line into ignorance or arrogance. You got this!! It's line any other hard task you face in life. Just step over the hurdle and prepare for the next!

Hey merlin! Are there any tips you suggest i use for my driver's test tomorrow?! For example, if u don't mind me asking, where did you go wrong the first time?
@@tithisings I was extremely nervous the first time. Try to relax, work on your weaknesses, and remember, it's all about following the rules and driving safely. I took magnesium before my second time, which is a natural relaxant, but don't overdo it or it might give you an unexpected "brown" side effect. You'll do great. Good luck!
