- Ever since the early 90s, the first-person shooter has continued to grow in popularity with each passing. A genre that was once limited to arena shooters now encompasses a diverse range of flavors including but not limited to post-apocalyptic RPGs, multiplayer shooters, narrative-driven linear thrill rides, and much more.
While there has never been a shortage of great first-person shooters, but only a few dozen games have remained with us after all these years.
With this feature, we will be running down 30 of the best first-person shooters of all time. We’ll be discussing how fun the game was when it released, how influential it was to the genre as a whole, and how well it stacks up to this date.

You can tell this guy doesnt play games at all. As he calls Hunt Showdown a game to hunt Monsters????? its a PVP game. And says it didnt get the longevity it deserved. What the f is he ona bout? the game is still very much active.

For me, as a long-time Resident Evil fan, RE Village was dull, monotonous with tedium and just does not fit into the RE Universe very well at all, Ethan was very fleshed out, the actual Chris Redfield returning was great and honestly the section where You take control of Chris at the end of the game was the best part. RE Village was okay generally overall, but, definitely lacked much of what made the franchise so great and most definitely build on the tension or survival horror that made RE 7 Biohazard such a masterpiece.
I like RE village..... but I like alot of games though.

And original Doom, Doom 2016, Quake and Quake II, and Return to Castle Wolfenstien. Not including id software was a pretty poor decision. Also, what about Goldeneye? Really the list of better games they didn’t include is as long as the actual list. Making it kind of a shitty list

Perfect Dark > Goldeneye 007, Black > Time splitters 2, RTCW > Wolfenstein 2,... By the way, no Doom, Crysis, Quake 2, Medal of Honor PS1, this list is totally incomplete without those games!

My two games of memory were Golden Eye and Black. So I was happy to see those. But I’m shocked that Doom and Call of Duty didn’t make this list.

Doom should definitely have been listed. But CoD, seriously? CoD is one of the most generic games of all time and in the beginning only copied Medal of Honor. CoD also made every FPS developer think bad game design is the way to go.

Doom 3 was my fav doom and that should be here. Crysis is overrated though, espeically the furst Crysis

Great Series. I like the Gameplay of FEAR 2 the best. Alma doesn’t play.

I know its subject to opinion, but if you purposefully left out Doom in a top 30 FPS list because you wanted to get more people to comment, it worked. If it wasn't included on this list because you guys genuinely think it isn't a top 30 FPS game of all time...then...that's just dumb. Even if you don't like it, it's impact alone has it top 30. And I'm talking old school Doom.

Glad to see Splitgate get a mention. Some of the most fun I’ve had in a shooter in years.
I think this should of been split into single player and multi player. Both will have their respective attractions. You can't compare the two types together. Tarkov being one of the most complex multi player games with bullet speed/drop/player load out etc of current times and comparing it to a single player campaign games, " point and shoot" like Doom or Duke nuke 'em 3d are worlds a part. I do agree some games are worlds a part but out dated now due to graphical ability at the time like Golden eye, but golden eye was mainly single player marketed (although had fun in multi player with friends) I personally feel the best games are ones yo can play over and over again but play certain scenarios differently to change the out come of the story/battle.
Not including Call of duty and Doom is just ridiculous lol

The 90s have some of the best fps games ever made, half life, Return to castle Wolfenstein, perfect dark, goldeneye, soldier of fortune, elite force, doom, quake, avp, unreal, turok 1,2 i can quite happily play these over and over again, i will always have the urge to play them they are ingrained into my dna.

Halo: CE is number 1 IMO. That was the most amazing game experience I've ever had. It was mind blowing when it came out with the Xbox.
Yeah I remember 2001 like it was yesterday, As a young adult, when I got home with my brand new Xbox and my copy of Halo, I was totally mesmerized hrs later with my sweaty hand still wrapped around that big ol manly game controller, and totally immersed in that entertaining experience, And I still go back to it to this day.
Doom, COD, Bioshock, Crysis, and F.E.A.R. deserve a place in that list.

30 Best FPS Shooters of All Time with no mention of any of the Call Of Duty franchise seems incredibly weird. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare changed the face of gaming and this genre. Shame to see it missed, yet the Half Life franchise gets 2+1 (Black Mesa) mentions in the same video. Was Bulletstorm really more impactful? Timesplitters 2? Who writes these?!?

Did you say Borderlands 2 has "crafting wacky weapons"? There is no crafting in B2.
I'm surprised SoF II wasn't on this list. It pioneered realistic gore in FPS's. F.E.A.R. should've been here as well. Seeing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on here though kind of made up for their absence as I'm currently playing through G.A.M.M.A..

Yes i agree. Sof ll was the bomb back in the day. even the first sof was great . Then after 2 they never kept going and everyone wanted sof 3 and finally they came out with 3 and it sucked balls. that was the end for me. them bastards. this was back when i was pc gaming . after sof 3 came out i went back to consoles and played tomb raider again.

Rocksteady Urban Chaos is a fun FPS that did a lot of cool stuff like having a riot shield and having fire fighters and paramedics department to support you in your missions. I wish they made a Sequel but there to busy with Batman games now.

Black was such a great game. Short but great. Another great 1st person shooter was Area 51.

OK, as a lifelong FPS fan, this is a pretty crap list. Not a single Doom entry? No Quake? Call of Duty? Return to Castle Wolfenstein? Unreal Tournament? Dark Forces? Perfect Dark? Turok? No One Lives Forever? Extend it to immersive sim FPS games, and the list is even more galling. No Deus Ex, Bioshock, Prey or Dishonored.
There are definitely some stone-cold bangers on here, but overlooking the genre-defining, still-fun-as-hell classics in light of the likes of Splitgate and Bulletstorm is pretty much unforgiveable. SMH.
Half Life was a game ahead of its time and in my opinion one of the greatest of all time. the first one.
Yes the 1st Halflife enabled all the rest of these it should be number one.
And of course it enabled the CS to come to life at the end of 1999 to 2000. Which at the time was the biggest online fps game going.

Loved Resident Evil Village! Incredible game and one of the scariest resident evil games.
Not really been a fan of over the top ungrounded fps games. There's far too many bloated sci fi games. I feel like killzone was the perfect balance of what felt like could happen

I've literally never heard of a couple of these games until I clicked thru this list (Splitgate?). I'm tempted to list all the games with timestamps of where they are in this video just so folks can more easily see what was left off and make a better list of their own. And seriously, RE Village should NOT be on a first person shooter list. Period.

I played a story mode game a couple of decades ago and I can't remember the name of it, so if anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it!
In the game, the main character was similar in style to the character who appears on the cover of the game Uncharted (but this is not the game) and he starts with a pistol, in a night scene. What really caught my attention was that whenever the character used his pistol, I would hold down the right mouse button and the handle holding the pistol would become "energized" yellow.
The game's story didn't seem to take place in an ultra-technological world, so I came to the conclusion that it was a special power of the character.
I played it on PC!
Literal Halo clones make the list but only the Master Chief Collection makes the list. 😂

Counter Strike franchise should have been there. I mean, it basically is one of the ancient fathers of e-sports/competitive video game on FPS (along with Unreal Tournament and Quake, but much more successful). A brand that has survived for over 24 years, specially considering that it started as a mod.
Counter Strike 1.6, Condition Zero, Source, Global Offensive and now Counter Strike 2. 5 different games, with the same structure but evolving along the eras.
I have to agree about Black , it was a fantastic game , it was only released on PS2 (if i remember correctly) as they were releasing PS3.. That was unfortunate timing on the developers behalf , but the PS3 was not backwards compatible at that time so it was largely forgotten , I wish they would do a remake of it ...
Odd that Doom and Crysis weren't here.

Yeah Resistance 1 is a masterpiece , though I feel that it's not recognised because of its inspirations being tied down to halo.

When talking about Far Cry 2 did he call the villain “the titular jackal”. Correct me if I’m wrong but “jackal” is nowhere to be found in the title of the game. How is Doom not mentioned even once? And a lot of people sleeping on Rage 2. That game is an overlooked gem. STALKER is great and all but if you're going to play that today, look no further than the uber modded version in STALKER GAMMA. What STALKER GAMMA is should become a new subgenre of shooter. I think it's perfect for anyone looking for an immersive survival horror experience.

The only thing I disagree about is putting BF Overhyped Company 2 instead of BF3. BF 3 was another level, on every level.
Except for the horrible external server browser, the game was perfect. Fantastic graphics & art-style that hold up even nowadays, sound, animations & tech that helped BF 3 be the best BF.
Really good destruction model, good gunplay, great vehicle physics and just overall fun gameplay. Best campaign out of all BF's, full of legendary bits & atmosphere.

The FPS genre is not among the oldest game genres; old computers and game consoles were not able run these kind of games for many years.

Titanfall 2 is not just only one of the best fps games ive ever played but one of the best games ever made across all categories
