Stoic is one word for this topic.

"Simultaneously fascinated and appalled", yes, that's me about 40 percent of the time. Regarding the nice lady's upset stomach, it may well have been related to alcohol consumption the prior evening, (we've all been there.....well some of us have). In any event, best wishes for her speedy recovery and a sincere hope that she's a prompt hand washer.

I am hardcore, for sure. I am disabled. I should not be lifting heavy things, carrying heavy things, being around a lot of people. But I have sold books for decades and as long as there is breath in my body, I will be dealing with books. And when there is no breath in my body, I will be walking along pulling my oxygen in one hand a bag of books with my other hand or wearing backpacks of books.
I have also sold jewelry as I used to make and sell jewelry. That is better for my back, but it always goes back to books. And I have sold huge boxes of jewelry and jewelry making supplies and given away even more boxes of jewelry fixins. Because it is books that make my heart sing.

Believe I would have turned around after that first one and gone back home ... but that's just me.
Have toted heavy boxes of books, multiple trips, blocks down the road from estate sales, to my truck, with a big ol grin on my face knowing I had just scored big time.

My husband has gone to a few on-line auction book lot pick ups with me. He says all the time that I should buy and sell THIMBLES.

Once I vomited in a gas station urinal from an allergic reaction and I insisted to the employees that they let me clean it up instead of them. How's that for hardcore? 🙂 As far as the road analogy, whether the road is hard or not, I believe the most important thing is to find "shortcuts" like warps in a video game.

I have to laugh about the lady throwing up cuz I kind of done that. There’s was an estate sale I really wanted to go to but I woke up not feeling well. I went anyway and took the barf bowl with me, tossed my cookies while waiting, and then proceeded to the sale. Thankfully I didn’t throw up anymore but went home, fell asleep about noon and slept til 5am the next morning well rested for a rummage sale that started at 7. This was over 10 years ago.
And then there was the time I was going to estate sales 40 weeks pregnant while in labor. Im crazy.
And I keep a wagon in my car for big book hauls at estate sales.

That woman isn’t “hardcore” she’s uncouth and disgusting. That’s the worst part of thrifting for me- some of the people you have to willingly put yourself around are, choosing my words carefully here, absolute trash. (Okay not so diplomatic, sorry)
I am a sympathetic person but spending time in thrifts mean you’re around people actively high on drugs and alcohol, people with zero shame about abusing their children verbally and sometimes physically in public, people who carry on loud conversation on speaker phone right next to you with zero consideration of anyone else, thieves who outright take things right in front of your eyes knowing they won’t be punished at all, people who treat thrift stores like day cares and let their children run wild like Lord of the Flies throughout the store while they ignore them and shop, people who bring aggressive or barking dogs into the store…. It’s honestly like Mad Max sometimes at least where I live.
I try to understanding of people and I realize everyone has their problems, but sometimes it’s like thrift stores are ground zero for the complete breakdown of society.
