  • In the first of two pieces of Dead Space remake coverage from Digital Foundry, John Linneman compares the 2023 release on PS5 against the 2008 original on PS3. There's plenty to praise in what feels like a best-in-class remake, with Frostbite engine innovations and overhauled game design, yet the launch version of the game is not without its flaws.

Gen 7 and prior - pre-microtransactions scams and the Golden Age - game companies HAD to build quality like Dead Space to compete or they died. Customers won, deserving publishers/studios won. So many great titles from those times proves as such due to these remakes/remasters really only receiving graphic updates and some light story/level changes. Sadly microtransactions weaseled in and now we have 90% scams with occasional rare gem.

One thing that has really stood out to me about this remake is the lighting. It might not feature the absolute cutting edge features like a full suite of RT effects, but the way Motive made use of the technology that is there is pretty remarkable. I have about 6 hours in the game currently and there were so many moments where I entered a new room and just stood there for a moment to admire the incredible work the studio put in to the atmosphere of this game. The audio engineering is top notch, but they have also done an incredible job at utilizing the Ishimura's architecture to frame rooms in such a way that the lighting has this very striking appearance at times. The volumetrics, the placement of light fixtures, and the occasional large machinery that's moving around and cascading large shadows over the entire room makes the Ishimura seem like it would have been unsettling to live and work on during even the best of its days before everything went to Hell. The original game obviously achieved the same thing with what it had back in the day, but this remake is on a whole other level thanks to the advancement in technology and Motive's competency in making use of it. I suspect that the remake will stand the test of time just as readily as the original has. Definitely one of the best remakes to come out in the past decade.
I just hope the technical issues on PC get fixed soon. Someone already found a fix for the forced VRS, but there's also a significant problem with the frame rate getting cut by 20-30 FPS during cut scenes and getting stuck in the low 30s or worse for an indefinite amount of time, with the only solution being to save and reload. It's a very serious issue that really harms the quality of the experience, but I have yet to see any major reviewers mention it despite posts on Reddit and the Steam forums mentioning it.

The fact that numerous regular paying customers have reported these issues while the "reviewers/company salesmen" just "fail" to mention this isn't surprising.

There is so much detail in just the first 20 mins, before you even fix the tram. I beat the original a couple times and was sitting on this purchase but bro let me tell you. It's like a new game, pretty much! There is so much environmental detail and atmosphere that it makes it so you feel like you are there. Seeing Issac, Johnson, Hammond, and the crew face all detail with emotions, it fills in where your imagination could only due it's best to fill in the blanks. It's crazy. You can see lighting and shadows bounce of Issacs engineer suit and it looks absolutely amazing. Not to mention for Veteran players there are little Easter eggs you can pick up on real early. There is a empty dead end hallway in the first area after you split up with Hammond and Johnson, that has some small scribbles, and when you go by it you can sometimes hear whispering, which is the first sign of the marker this early in the game. Pretty cool little detail I bet alot of players missed.

Characters look quite a bit better, but in every other aspect the two are pretty even I'd say. Especially when the games get more hectic and intense, DS gains a lot of ground due to how interactive all the physics driven clutter in the environments is. CP's environments are entirely static. They also never ever open up. DS on the other hand has many moments of grand scale. I think DS loses out quite a bit due to the way its iq is achieved right now. It's a very clean but also quite soft looking game. It never really looks as sharp as its pixel metrics would suggest, and I feel this really undersells the quality of the character models in particular.

Also while Callisto was definitely disappointing in some regards, it's still definitely worth checking out! If you go into it with no expectations and a general love for sci-fi survival horror you'll have a good time. A lot of the bad reviews were focused on the performance at launch but these issues have been ironed out. I've just wrapped up my 3rd playthrough of Callisto so I have some thoughts on the game you might find useful to determine whether or not to give it a try:
      Cons:
      - WAY too many vents, crawl spaces and ladders
      - Not enough enemy variety
      - Very oddly paced and simple narrative that had the potential for some Spec Ops: The line shenanigans but blew it
      - Very conventional weaponry and not much of it
      - Not very scary but I think this is just the reality of being a fan of survival horror. There are some great jump scares mind you!
      - GRP is severely overpowered and there are far too many 'spike walls' placed everywhere for no logical reason
      Pros:
      - The gameplay despite taking a bit to get used to is very tight and punchy. Tying the dodge/block inputs to directions on the left stick was something i hated at first but grew to love with time as it restricts you when fighting in an almost Resident Evil 1 kinda way
      - The voice acting and motion capture is incredible. Josh nailed the 'tough pilot guy thrust into chaos' shtick surprisingly well and Elias/Dani are also very 'real' in their presentation and performance
      - The animations are insane. From bopping heads to anxiously looking around you all the way down to the wrinkles of your shirt. I'm always seeing new little details I hadn't noticed before!
      - The graphics, lighting, atmosphere, ray tracing etc.. Gorgeous. Don't even bother with performance mode it makes the game look like an early xbox one release (bit harsh but not far off lol). Completely guts the vibe of the game. Besides its a slow paced game and I find with these newer games that look almost real like this, TLOU2, RDR2 work much better in 30fps with motion blur on as the games themselves are trying to emulate a more filmic look, and film is around 24-27 fps i believe.
      - The controller vibrations.. My god such a simple thing. I'm on Series X so I would imagine PS5 is the way to go with this game but even on Xbox the vibrations just feel so good. And they're used for everything. Navigating the main menu? Bzz. Taking a step? Bzz. Picking up loot? Bzz. You might think it's over the top but it's implemented so well and subtly that it just gives everything you do so much more weight which is something I see many games these days lacking.. A sense of weight and heaviness to your actions. While i'm having a blast with dead space I must say it doesn't feel like i'm in a heavy RIG like it did in the original but that's more to do with animations and sound design I think.
      - The world itself is really cool. It has some similar aesthetics to dead space but for the most part it's another cool take on a sci-fi landscape that is largely unique to itself.
Sorry for the essay haha these games have just gotten me so pumped for the genre and it's potential and i'm very passionate about survival horror! There are tonnes more pros and cons to the game but I think i've written enough for now. If you have any specific questions about the game or about dead space remake i'd be happy to help out!

Looks like PS5 just got a hotfix that corrects the issues outlined in this video. I own both versions of the game, for PS5 and Series X, and they are far more comparable now than they were yesterday. Would love to see a followup to know what was changed and how each version stacks up after the change as it is not an insignificant update. I believe XBox also took an update as shadows look different in some sections I had noted over the weekend where lighting was different on the consoles. There is parity here now between the two so I am curious what got changed in both. But great video nonetheless. Sometimes timing is weird like that.

Sound design and music. Wow does this thing sound great on my home theatre 5.1 sound system. I'm about an hour in to the game. I really like those whispers you sometimes can just barely hear. That really help to make things creepy in spots.
I've done a couple side quests. Those weren't in the original. But I really like having the choice of what to do next. Exploring the ship is great. You sometimes get rewards with extra items. Tip : You can use your "pull" ability, to reach things that are otherwise out of reach. There was a blinking item on top of a locker. I was able to get it using that ability.
