Direct visual and feature comparison of the newly released Dead Space Remake [PC] and the original classic version of the game from 2008.
This video covers a ton of content for Dead Space - all spoiler free, including various gameplay features, visual elements, and core changes. Both games are being played on the PC using the highest visual settings, though Dead Space 2008 has been modified slightly to ensure the brightness appears properly. Dead Space Remake also utilizes Nvidia DLSS in its quality preset for all gameplay sequences, but direct asset comparison like models are compared with DLSS disabled.

    Quick Correction:
-While the pulse rifle is automatically available in the store in the original game, you do have to find "schematics" hidden in the old levels to unlock more weapons like the flamethrower. Still - the remake has you find the actual weapons themselves, which I think is a much better way to introduce these weapons to players.

Concur'd. It's... _very_ easy to watch some guides on the game and say "Ugh, flamethrower? No thank you!" or just think "I don't have the money for this, I need NODES"
But this way, you are GOING to get that weapon and you are GOING to try it.

Well, the point of making that as "schematic first, buy second" in the original is to have a sense of resource management. It's a survival game, you must use items (credits, ammo, nodes) wisely so it would be on your advantage. The new one is less risky and too tame.

What I really like which another RUclipsr pointed out is that, while Isaac finally speaks and has his own dialogue in the game, he only actually speaks when around other people. So unlike most games, let’s say for example, Nathan Drake in Uncharted, he isn’t constantly spouting random dialogue to help the player at key moments. They don’t do that here and I think it was a great choice. I don’t want the character to randomly say something that will conveniently help me figure out the puzzle. The most you will hear from Isaac are his grunts and heavy breathing which is super refreshing and only immerses you more as a player.

Dead Space was the first game I played that had its score adapt to what was happening on screen, and was truly terrifying in its application. Jumpscares and fighting sequences were accented by intense scoring that would fade in naturally, and fade out as soon as the coast was clear. The layering in with atmospheric SFX, foley, screams, and gunfire was also very ahead of its time; something I feel that the remake is sorely missing. It was also PIVOTAL to understanding when the player was in danger or not. With the original game devs communicating how hard it was hard to portray an enemy coming from behind you with such a tight third person angle, sound design was an important communication tool for understanding danger. It also worked to deepen the games tension ("why do I hear tense music even though I don't see anything?") with little to nothing visual to cause it. The quarantine comparisons here are so stark. When the quarantine begins in the original, a strong asynchronous bass drum banging (which sounds like movement in vents) can be heard along with the also rhythmic whirling of the alarm, creating a mismatched pattern of sound that creates a more dynamic guttural reaction, heightening the anxiety and tension. Like an unescapable march or war drum, spelling out your demise. In the remake, that drum banging isn't in the scene, and just has the higher pitch rhythm of the alarm. It's a small difference in the big picture, but for a game that had such a lasting impact in its sound design, it's pretty disappointing to see that stripped away.

Great video. I'm curious if the pixelated ssr reflections are a result of using dlss or if you were at native resolution at the time?
SSR is often rendered at 1/4 or even 1/8 res in a lot of games with no option to change it, so I'm not expecting dlss to have been the cause but it is possible.

What I think the remake captures perfectly is the way that we remember Dead Space. It's pretty easy to think back on a game that came out so long ago and remember it looking much better than it actually does. The remake really just makes the game look and feel like how I remember the original feeling at the time. It made me fall in love with the franchise all over again and I can't wait to to play it through again.

This is a good point, while the game does look really nice and the team did a good job, readability goes down with all the extra clutter.
Things that don't help and stuff I can point to:
Large amount of repeating panel cut lines and samey details, bright metal edge wear on everything creating more highlights than needed, excessive specular reflections on almost all surfaces that make the environment look greasy and shiny, etc... Also, the extremely dark and dim atmosphere doesn't help, it hides all the hard work. I'm nitpicking here but just some things I notice that give credit to the OG design.

@AutismoGamer Finally someone understands it falls into the typical horror genre, rather than allow the environment and mood to assist in the lifting. It instead relies on the characters, people forget that backgrounds are characters too. While the remake may look pretty on the surface it fails to tell a story without speaking. If that makes any sense, truly a tell not show conundrum.
