not it it comes with the janky gameplay that Callisto gave us. there is a reason retro style games are making a comeback as long as the gameplay is fun. if your old enough you will remember fmv games from the 90's it was mind blowing when it first came out but the game play almost always sucked and we went back to games like super Mario and Metroid. i wanted to love Callisto i really did. but i hated my first playthrough and after the patches i went back for a second play through and once my last trophy popped i shut it off and gave it to a friend to play. he has yet to finish it after a month because he cant get into it and he has never played any dead space games but loves those types of games. that says something about game play in its own. but you are right it does look good.

its weird how such a big company like EA can be so short-sighted
they axed Visceral because it didn't sell a huge amount, but Dead Space sold pretty well for a Horror game but the greedy executives don't understand or care, now after all these years they realized the potential Dead Space has, all these years they could have kept the original Studio and kept building the title and it would have been a mainstream title by now and they'd make a lot of money.

The game is expensive to make and the first two games didn’t sell all that well for the budget. They tired to make it more accessible and added co-op but it still couldn’t really break free sales wise. It’s not a matter of being greedy, its a matter of you need money to keep a studio operational. Great video! Sure, the characters, flesh rendering and mo-capped animations look better in Calisto; everything else looks better in Dead Space. It's way more dynamic. The thickness of fog sometimes changes in rooms (when you revisit them). The flamethrower lights up the volumetric smoke around it. The sparks bounce around realistically while lighting the surroundings. You can pick up light sources like lanterns or flares and move them around to change the lighting. The lights flicker randomly, and the rooms you revisit now suddenly have flesh grown own in places. The world of dead space keeps evolving and also reacts to your actions. In Calisto, all things are nailed down to the ground, and the GI is baked, which feels old gen in comparison.

It certainly wasn't the best, but judging it on it's own merit I actually think it's a pretty good game with replayability. It reminded me a lot of RE2 remake. Dead Space remake has a more "classic" horror vibe and kept true to the original, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. It's also a lot longer, so replayability is perhaps not as good as The Callisto Protocol.

@@cun7us the lack of enemy types and the singular combat style wore quick for me. I also thought the level design, tho very detailed in nature, was very lackluster. They leaned too heavily into “possible jump scares” where you would be expecting a monster to drop down and attack you but instead nothing ever happened. It worked for the first playthrough because I was on the edge of my seat but it became boring during my second play thru because I knew the audio and visual buildups were for nothing. Dead space on the other hand kept things scary because every time you would re-enter an area you would be attacked by a different monster, which was determined by RNG. I never felt safe for that reason, which is what you want from a action horror game.

    • @cun7us
      @cun7us Год назад +3

@@crawdaddyy yes, The Callisto Protocol was definitely best on the first playthrough and did lean heavily on jump-scares, especially with the elongated aliens that jump out of their pods, and the jack-in-the-box ones. That being said, I thought the sound design was so much better on Callisto, especially when you're beating enemies with the baton. It had so much crunch to it and the damage looked very realistic, unlike Dead Space which looked and sounded very mechanical, basically just shooting off limbs. The necromorphs also sounded a bit too quiet and didn't scare me as much.
Callisto was very linear, perhaps a bit too much in areas, whereas Dead Space was semi open-world with a lot of backtracking, so it's hard to compare the level design when they're very different. Story-wise, they're pretty much on par in my opinion, but the cutscenes and acting were much better in Callisto so I felt more invested in the characters even though the story itself was kind of generic.

Callisto Protocol is the epitome of "looks aren't everything". It has superb graphics and animation, clearly surpassing Dead Space Remake on most occasions, but the rest that is needed to complete the experience just isn't (up) there. While pre-release it was believed to be Dead Space's spiritual successor, it fails to deliver on important things DS nailed and the sad thing here is that I see little actual innovation on what seems to be trying to recapture the same vision, just with different names and designs. This is what hurts it most in my eyes, it's made by the same person at the helm and sadly I don't see a lot of effort made in trying to expand upon the original formula. Melee being the focus seems to be the largest departure, yet for a system you get to engage with so much it barely feels fleshed out and quickly becomes boring, ultimately making that departure feel forced just to differentiate Callisto more easily. It has even less gameplay variety than DS and the few new things it tries to do, they feel adequate at best.

Texture details in some cases and some other graphical techniques - yes
Animations - big NO, especially in character animation which is not in cutscenes - the combat animations for both Jacob & the boring overused enemies is extremely janky with no fluidity - it's actually borderline comedic.
Callisto is close to garbage as a game, as a story, as "horror" techniques and as execution of a product overall and the only thing it did was hurt the genre revival train that RE2 Remake had going.

Ishimura in DS like the mansion in RE1 was like a big escape room puzzle. Unlocking more areas and pathways, and being able to enter places I couldn't get to earlier is my favorite aspect of these games. Being contained in a messed up place but having it slowly open up. Backtracking to previous areas and rooms. It was very immersive and it felt like the area the game took place in was a character in itself. Hell even Dark Souls 1 used this level design to a degree. Interconnected areas.
Then Callisto protocol comes along and makes it all linear. With little to few places to backtrack. Kinda ruined the entire game for me. Locker room with hidden goodies I can come back to? Nope. That armory you want to pillage but you didn't have a keycard? None of that. Just a track you rail on in one direction. Result? Not a single memorable location or setpiece. Just one-off rooms and corridors. Horrible level design imo. Callisto protocol could have made the game one big interconnected prison, with various other places working the same. But nope.
Callisto protocol also managed to fail completely as a horror game by removing tension entirely. Dead space had this problem too but in Callisto protocol it was so obvious you could understand the monster triggers even if you're not trying to. I WONDER IF WHEN I PICK THIS UP 3 MONSTERS WILL SPAWN HMMM. Where is the tension when level designers just arbitrarily place monsters everywhere you expect them to appear.

One of my criticisms for callesto protocol is that one from the visual and design point of view the biophage are to human like in comparison to the necormporhs we're just mangled corpse often just jumbled together you sometimes forget it's a just human corpse or corpses put together it was horrifying the biophages lack that
There's also the enemy variety and feeling the same Dead space had 17 enemies callesto has about 4 to 7 enemies that feel lackluster

I think Calisto was stuck with what they could do with the enemy types since the game is melee focused, the enemies have to be able to be bashed to death whereas dead space can do enemies like the leviathan and twitchers (the fast ones that come up once the ship crashes) while also making it believable in lore

There is something you missed. Callisto seems to have an actual “real life” scenario set up. Meaning , like in the original dead space series , enemies showed the ability to plan and react to the player. Being able to retract and jump into vents to effectively flank. The new dead space does not have this. Has not shown it to me on any setting and I’ve played the old series over 30 times to completion( all parts ). CP has parts that the player can do in diff order and acquire things not normally attainable. Also there are some Easter eggs. Ps NOBODY thought that shadow work was “shady”. No pun intended. Maybe. Possible turbo pun ,actually. DS is a pretty repaint. But it can’t shine the shoes of CP and I know comparing the two of them as to which one is the best is still blowing the same exact guy but he deserves a good blower for these games. Pony up !

The faces in Callisto are top tier, but turn their heads to the side and you'll see a major problem in that all the heads seem shallower than normal human heads. It's a big flaw in their character models that's readily apparent to any human who has seen other humans. It baffles me that this problem exists in a game with such a high level of visual fidelity.
