      @paris-1911 Год назад +43

      @Mad J Hate to break to you, but in the digital space it's easier to reiterate how someone else words their opinion if you share the same view.
      It's no surprise more people forming opinions on the matter are similarly worded -- these are very subjective topics. What you get out of the design of the Vanguard Demon is subjective -- and feelings are tough to put into words for a lot of people.
      Just 'cause an opinion is copied doesn't immediately imply that it's false or any less valid to have. You don't know that, nobody does; unless you can freecam into the brains of all 50k people and decipher who's shrugging their shoulders and rolling with consensus, and who's taking someone else's lead cause they voiced their own feelings in a way that seemed concrete.
      For example, Matthewmatosis's video on Dark Souls II. Lot of people couldn't quite put into words what was wrong with that game, and when that video came out it made it pretty clear, concise, and left out as much bias as possible. People then repeated his argument 'cause it was not only solidly formed, but it resonated with many people who also had issues with the game. I'm sure it also steered the easily persuaded into shrugging their shoulders and saying "look, DS2 is bad."
      So, like, I get what you mean, but those are some big sweeping accusations that kill all nuance to these conversations and further division.
      So what if people copied an opinion? Do you really want to question everyone making those statements how many hours they put into Demon's Souls?

    One that really got me split is Fool's Idol. The remake environment looks better and has more appeal than the original, however, in the original when the camera zooms to her descending she's in-front of the woman depicted in the glass which makes you think "Oh is that her?" While in the remake the main focus just becomes her and doesn't really make you think about who she is because the background isn't depicting the image of her, just that she's another person you need to fight.

    • @umukzusgelos4834
      @umukzusgelos4834 Год назад +76

      Fools Idol twos iterations are also interesting because of the way each expresses it´self
      Classic Fool´s Idol has a very Doll like Quality, her face has a an expression that is neither angry nor happy, she just stares at you and mocks you with her laughter
      Modern Fool´s Idol can be quite agitated and contorts her face a lot more, while also feigning some benevolence at the beginning as she descend´s before giving you the stare of disapproval, overall she has a more cynical aura around her

      @@umukzusgelos4834 I'll personally prefer the old one, even if it was probably done out of graphical limitations.
      Seeing as the boss is quite literally supposed to be a puppeteer'd fake of the real Queen of Latria, the whole unmoving expression of, what is effectively a doll of the Queen, makes it more eerie to me.
      Plus, I just feel it fits with the name. "Fool's Idol."
      Like most who reside in Latria -- or the many who were locked up there -- they _foolishly_ worship a false Queen, but if they took a harder look... Then they might see something off.

      @@chestermicgun Her facial expression in the original is neutral because shes meant to represent the queen of latria and give people hope, which the old monk feeds upon.
      She is a puppet designed soely to give the tortured souls of latria hope, and draw them in before being kidnapped.
      You change her facial expression to something angry, then it creates a rift between her lore, and what is presented in game. The people of latria come to her to see a benevolant queen, not some rage filled witch, which she has now been made to look like. She is a trap. What sort of idiot is going to be hopefull when they see the fools idol in the remake? No one
      Fromsoft put so much effort into details for environmental storytelling. You change that, you change the whole meaning.
      Bolataria palace is a no frills norman castle for defensive purposes only in the original.
      In the remake, it has gothic spires, banners everywhere and gold. Its changed completely from a minimalist culture, designed for defences only to one that cares less about defense and more about presintaition.
      In latria, you find yellow cloth strips everwhere, which shows the old monks corruption of latria and rise to power. The player doesnt know this until the old monk is revealed in his yellow robes.
      In the ramake the cloth flags are red.
      So they lose all meaning

The crispy 4K extra detailed monster is not going to be as creepy or scary as the rough, blurry partially dark version. The OG has a lot more uncanny valley vibes and dreadful atmosphere. The new one feels like real flesh and bone to a fault. The remake looks graphically superb and impressive but most redesigns feel less appropriate for the game IMO. Not knocking their work because all the bosses look great. This is my opinion for now may change later.

      @tycol322 Год назад +19

      A good example I think is the storm king. In the original it has more visible detail, it had that sickening flayed flesh like tone but outside of cut scenes you can tell it's a product of its time where as in the remake it moves gracefully. Almost like it's swimming like a ray on film but it's lost that detail that made it so unnerving to me in the first place since it's hidden in shadow and environmental obscurity.
      Conversely the dragon king has the opposite problem with the remake showing too much detail by giving it too much lighting and highlighting too much where as the original whether through design or limitation held back lighting and gave you just enough to see what your eye working with while hiding enough to make wonder what else couldn't you see.
      Just my opinion

I definitely prefer the unnvering yellow eye over the calming blue eye. It's details actually do work being shown as well for some reason. It is a great lovecraftian design. Felt like I was looking at a god. And you are right the remake is too smooth and loses its uncanniness despite the shadow.
      I also agree the new Dragon King also looks like a cool Final fantasy or monster hunter boss very cool but not unsettling in the slightest IMO.

I believe it’s universal horror techniques that showed up more in the past due to technological limitations. I believe people are naturally scared of a situation or being that they have limited inadequate information on. It has nothing to do with my generation. Young or old, people are going to be more scared of the silhouette of a man down the street at night than the same man in the bright morning. The primal fear of the unknown is as old as the dawn of mankind way before us. Also whether I prefer the OG or remake from an aesthetics perspective is a different convo altogether. Like the remake probably has bosses that look “cooler” but is that what we want? All I’m saying is the limitations of the OG works better from a horror perspective. The old Maneater looks like a really basic Gargoyle/Werewolf form but because they were limited they added hair to the Maneater but made it almost the exact same grey color as his skin so you could barely notice the hair.
      The new one if people paid attention has a very similar appearance but because of way better lighting and usage of color and added hair around the face it's suddenly not similar?

For another example the fool’s idol is supposed to look angelic, now she looks obviously evil. The maneaters are flesh and bone now instead of stone gargoyles. The old champion now has anime hair even though he’s a desiccated mummy. And I absolutely have no idea what they were thinking with the changes to the way the Fat Ministers look. Some of the weapon changes make no sense either, for example the guillotine axe was a guillotine blade on a stick, now it’s just an regular axe. It's a mixed bag. Some like Penetrator, Tower Knight, Astrea, Allant(s)... look like updated versions of the original design.
    The Old Hero, Dirty Colossus, and Armored Spider look like better realized versions of the original designs. Especially the Old Hero, who has a more disticinctive design, better animations (that imply he's blind), and an intro cinematic that makes it clear that his real body is still embedded in the wall.
    But the rest just feel like they miss the mark, if not misunderstand the whole assignment. Maneater is impressive and is a fitting take on the lore idea, but it's become more of a creature than some arcane "thing". Fools Idol comes off as a corrupted sorceress rather than a living doll. Leachmonger is more technically impressive, but the swarm of leaches isn't as visually grotesque as the layers of fused flesh stretching and writhing. The old Vanguard looked like some kind of otherworldly demon, while the new one looks like a Doom enemy. Flame Lurker is animated really well, but the most interesting part of the original is the way it's body looked like real flesh liquifying in the heat. Storm King's eye and shadowed form is more menacing, but it looks smaller in scale and it doesn't have the rainbow colored feather scales that shine in the light.
    It feels like the focus was on making them look demonic and more like real creatures, when a lot of them intentionally lack any basis is reality and are only demons in name. The Adjudicator is the worst offender. It's supposed to be a divine and sacred being adorned in gold, operating as one with the golden bird that is the literal light of it's crown. The remake just makes it a fat demon with a weird head growth and a golden bird glued onto it. I guess the bird controls it or something. They even removed the ritually flayed lips it shares with Old Hero, because I guess they preferred the gross out factor of a gaping hole?

The remake oozes atmosphere in places where there wasn't much in the original, so it's hard to call it anything but an upgrade. Sure, it's hard to beat the OG, but the remake does everything right that the original did wrong and then some. Some redesigns may differ slightly, but that hardly makes a difference when so much was done better.

      @KILLCOUNT Oh please, the atmosphere in the remake is so inferior it isn't even funny. It's infuriating if anything. Take the Nexus, for example. The one place in the game where you know you're safe, with warm, pale lightning and a serene if somewhat somber track. How did they change it in the remake? Why, change the lighting to oversaturated, generic blue-orange contrasts and replace the theme with a foreboding organ piece, of course! The lack of understanding of tone and mood is astounding. I truly cannot think of a single spot in the game where the atmosphere is improved, at the very best it's somewhat close, and that's being generous.

    Remake Vs Original Boss Designs in my opinion. (ps this took 2 hours)
    Bosses I like better in Remake
    Phalanx - Same design but with better textures and effects
    Armor Spider - Love what they did with the remakes design and the oil attack is much better than the explosion. Also actually being able to tell what is going on is great
    Tower Knight - Again just the original but with better textures and a better model. Worse song and official though.
    Leechmonger - Actually made of leaches instead of a flat texture with some leaches on it
    Dirty Colossus - The Hive looks better in the remake and it looks like individual insects are flying out of it instead of a black cloud. Although the black cloud does make it look like there are more of them.
    Penetrator - The blood coming from the stabbed Fat Official and surrounding himself is really freaking cool. Also the red on the cloth of the armor I like more for him than the royal purple.
    Maiden Astraea and Garl Vindland - They both a just an updated version of their old designs. Although why was Garl Vindland sitting under a pile of bodies, I mean seriously in the original he was actually sitting by her and even better yet how did he get under them all.
    Old Monk - The cloth, summoning, and act of suprise on the old monk is much better in the remake. Although the original showed how the cloth was actually keeping him alive a lot better. A litteral husk where the eyes and skin have rotted away vs a starved human and the projectiles being yellow look a lot better. PS the head wrapping no longer looks like a solid mass of cheese and actually looks like a wrapping
    Total = 8
    Bosses I like better in Original
    Vangard Demon - Like the Yellow lightning eyes vs the red burning ones. Also the weird meat flap on the remake is weird.
    Fools Idol - Actually looks like a doll that would be seen as an item of worship while the remake looks like an angry witch. Also is not covered by weird black veins.
    Adjudicator - Oh my god the remake ruined this boss. Went from a demon that looks like an corrupted ancient god that is coated in gold and turned it into a disgusting monster that belongs in doom 3
    Flamelurker - Looks like what it is supposed to be, A human turned into a flame demon with the malformed human skull and flayed skin while the remake looks like it was always a demon.
    Maneater - Litterally a different monster than the original. Same problem as Flamelurker the original looks like a human chimera that is in constant pain while the remake is Sasquatch with wings.
    Old Hero - Just on the fact its actually leaving its body instead of a statue. Also it looks like again it could have been a human at one point heck it basically is. But what makes it monsterous is its removed lips while the remake just gave him a mad snarled look. Although I like what they did with the weapon phasing through walls.
    Old King Allant - Much more threatening and looks more beefy than the remakes. Also his mist is much less pronounced looking disguising the fact he is a fake more.
    True King Allant - Actually being able to see him and the remains of his old self make me like his original version much more.
    Total = 8
    Bosses That I think are Equal
    Dragon God - Both have their ups and downs. Remakes punch cutscene and a better tell that its breath is hot by the magma spit. But the originals head and eyes are better.
    Storm King - I love both designs. The Original's design by is amazing in on itself with the manta rays acting as scales for the demon but the remakes atmosphere and green eye contrasting with the sky makes me love this version
    Total = 2
    Verdict both are good and have their ups and downs. Although personally the original is better for me (because its closer to Miyazaki's vision). The remake isn't horrible and a good game.

    I only played the Remake and recently beat it, but these are the ones that looked better in the original.
    Vanguard Demon (there's something off putting about its design rather than just looking generic)
    Armored Spider (the armored part is accentuated more)
    Adjudicator (it looks more royalty than just a fat butcher)
    Flamelurker (it looks more like a burning demon flesh than the Remake's stone body?)
    Storm King (scales looks more demonic and eldritch than just a big manta ray, even the minions)
    Old Monk (I dig the more decayed look, it truly shows that the king is gone and its just the cloth holding him now)
    Old King Allant (more menacing than the Remake's)
    Aside from that the others are pretty much an improvement, the Maneater I can give or take, I get the stone gargoyle look the original was going for seeing as the stage is gargoyle infested, but I also like the new ones.

    A bit late to comment, but this is a great showcase with amazing editing.
    I think I overall appreciate all the ways that Bluepoint added visual clarity to the models of the bosses, made certain designs more intricate and interesting (the maneaters imo), and gave some bosses a more defined color scheme, like blood-red for the Penetrator or golden for the Old Hero (though I'm baffled that they did the opposite with the Old Monk and decided to change the golden magic projectiles to blue; just why).
    I think they didn't take much away from the original, and more often improved it, as a rule of thumb. I still can't help but notice some strange changes that I feel take away from the experience.
    Like the camerawork for the introductions of the Storm King and Maiden Astraea.
    For the Storm King, in the original, you start seeing from the distance this majestic, flying creature gracefully descend from the clouds. Then you get a closer shot and you see the disturbing eye and tentacles that show this is more of a Lovecraftian being.
    In the remake, the demon just casually emerges from the clouds with no suspense. I do like that they emphasized the stormy setting for the Storm King boss fight in the Shrine of Storms archstone. Can't quite figure out why, but it feels more fitting.
    For Astraea, in the original, they give you a glimpse of her saint-like pure white clothing before cutting to a shot of the skirts of her garment that are drenched completely in blood. The contrast conveys that it's a reversal of the perfectly pure maiden saint trope. She's in fact, a powerful archdemon that has the deaths of so many people literally on her hands.
    In the remake, that shot is gone, but I do love the detail they added of Garl Vinland pushing away the corpses he was using as a blanket. It's another way of showing that these virtuous lady and knight archetypes are actually far from innocent.
    So yeah, Bluepoint kinda missed the point sometimes making changes, but they make up for it for the most part, in my opinion.

    1) Vanguard. I like the overall body better in the remake, but I much prefer the original’s eyes, they give him such an ominous vibe, so I actually like the original slightly better.
    2) Dragon god. the original definitely looks better here. The high contrast with the yellow light from below really makes it pop, and you can clearly see all the textures of its skin. The remake looks like it’s all the same rock-like material, it looks less real and less creepy, also the lighting is a lot less dramatic so overall it looks more bland.
    3) Phalanx. They look almost identical, but I like the shields are little better on the remake and I like the original center thingy better, so I’d say they’re even.
    4) Armor spider. This time I like the remake better. They kept the same vibe of design, except with more details, more readable shadows, sharper lights, and the color change doesn’t bother me
    5) fool’s idol. I really like the remake, the hair looks more believable, they didn’t mess up the face animations, and otherwise the outfit and book is pretty similar, so the remake takes the cake for this one
    6) tower knight. Again it’s very similar, which means that the remake has the advantage because of better lighting and cleaner models. Also, the smoke/flame effects when you cut through the armor look better, even though I liked the original’s more greenish hue. Remake wins
    7) adjudicator. With the remake’s higher graphical fidelity and with the more powerful lighting in this scene we can see the boss more clearly which I like, but the lack of the original armor or intricate patterne make it look empty. Also the crown like thing below the bird in the original made the overall silhouette better, so the original wins.
    8) Leechmonger. The remake just looks like a pile of worms. It looks weightless and weirdly jiggly. The original actually looks like there is an actual structure underneath the worms, and it looks like something you could hit with a sword. Original wins
    9) Dirty colossus. The remake looks better because the concept is conveyed way more clearly, whereas the original looks kind of confusing as to what it even is.
    10) Flamelurker. The original wins because it actually looks like red-hot muscle and bone, whereas the remake design looks like black rock, which is a lot more generic in my opinion. Also the horns look cooler on the original. The fire effects on the new design do look gorgeous though.
    11) maneaters. For this one I’m really torn because the designs look very different and look very cool in their own ways. The new design’s face looks absolutely terrifying by looking evil, really well done, meanwhile the old face looks more ominos and also scary, by looking almost sad/in pain. It’s a draw for me
    12) old hero. I like the original design better. First the remake has this weird effect where he looks kinda on fire, meanwhile in the original he actually shines like a ghost. The color also pops way better thanks to this. Also the armor looks cooler in the original in my opinion.
    13) Storm king. This one is complicated. As far as the boss design and cutscene go, I much prefer the original. The light makes it way more detailed, eerie and majestic whereas the remake is just a big black blob with a ridiculous eye in the middle. But I gotta say, the fight in the pouring rain goes insanely hard. The original still wins, because we’re rating boss designs, but I had to talk positively about the remake here because I don’t feel it would have been fair to ignore the atmosphere of the actual battle.
    14) penetrator. Ok the armor looks great, but for the weapon, I think it’s a bit of a shame just how the remake tends to change every glowing thing a boss has to red. It’s a lot more generic, and I really liked the blue enchanted sword. with that said, the blood sword is so insanely badass and cool looking that it still wins, it just looks phenomenal that I can’t even be angry at the change.
    15) Maiden astraea & garl Vinland. The armor’s color in the original is better imo. It’s a lot more pale, it almost looks angelic, which is appropriate for a boss that doesn’t attack out of hatred but for protecting someone. The remake looks more generic. But I like the color contrast in the remake with the orb of light being a cold light against the rich dark reds/browns of the environment. Overall original wins.
    16) old monk. Ok let’s be real this guy just looks goofy as hell. It’s a draw. Tho I gotta say the remake cutscene where the old guy with the giant robe is revealed is super cool looking.
    17) old king allant. Both versions are good, in different ways. The original is just a pure badass, while the remake is thinner, is a bit more slouched, and has a less determined look. He already looks tired. Which versions you prefer depends on the lore implications, so I’m calling it a draw
    18) king allant. The only meaningful differences are that the remake is higher quality and has a fog effect that adds ambiance. Remake wins.
    Original wins : 8
    Remake wins : 6
    Draws : 4
    Keep in mind this is only about boss designs, not the overall appearance and atmosphere of the game. Also, this is only my opinion

    They literally broke the lore with some of these, such as Fool's Idol. Interesting how whenever someone thinks they can do better than Miyazaki, they do worse. Adjudicator is another one. Miyazaki described that the most important thing to him in design philosophy, is elegance. You can see this extremely clearly with the Fat Nobles or Adjudicator, and even more with the Fool's Idol. The elegance was lost. They just made them more disgusting and demonic looking. They made the Nobles look afflicted, almost like victims, when the point of the Nobles was that THEY were majestic evil perpetrators. They made the Adjudicator look gross and hideous, when its point was otherwordly and in its own way astonishing. They made the Fool's Idol look like an evil ragged witch, when she was a doll created in the image of the beautiful Queen of Latria specifically to *fool* people into worshipping her, which kept insurrections from happening and allowed the townsfolk to be picked off easily by the gargoyles during worship. How is that going to work when she's rather obviously a demonic witch?
    I really don't like most of these changes.

I repeat: ''They made the Fool's Idol look like an evil ragged witch, when she was a doll created in the image of the beautiful Queen of Latria specifically to fool people into worshipping her, which kept insurrections from happening and allowed the townsfolk to be picked off easily by the gargoyles during worship. How is that going to work when she's rather obviously a demonic witch?''

      Thats actually just a bug, it's not in the actual ps3 version, I stg people just wanna complain for the sake of complaining at this point, the remodels are basically a 1 to 1 recreation sometimes with some detail changes, sure, but some of the complaints I've seen with the remodels are actually ALSO in the original they just look too much like blurry shit for ppl to even realize lol. Also I'm not hating on the original, I played both and like both, but some ppl just wanna see this purely through rose tinted lens and it bugs the hell out of me

    Remake has better graphics and brightens everything while the other seems more like a bad dream. If only they kept the bad dream aspect to it and worked on its details; itd be perfect forever, but im still okay with the changes they went with.

      No it doesn't. It looks like a goofy Zelda enemy with a big giant eyeball. It's literally just a giant stingray.
      The original Stormking has a weird feathered look to its surface that also helps to sell the flight aspect, the same goes for the smaller rays.
      The remake is literally just 1:1 real world stingrays with googley eyes. It's fucking stupid.

    You know what I like about the new Old King Allant? He actually looks like a perfect imposter, compared to other demons who are twisted reflections of the things and people they were, OKA was nigh seamless, he had a regale and humane expression instead of the unchanging frown. People might say that this is a design flaw on the remake but it make SO MUCH sense considering what happened to the world, and the fact that he's supposedly the most powerful demon outside the nexus.

    The side by side of naked Phalanx really shows how much better the lighting is in the majority of the original. Subtle ethereal glowing in darkness vs super-saturated glowing throughout the whole scene. One of them gives off a unique atmosphere, and the other gives the feeling of poorly done CGI effects
    It's such a shame because the areas where the lighting and coloring isn't off, like leechmonger and true king allant, look amazing.

    I definitely think that most of these designs are fantastic translations and improvements over the originals. But they definitely misinterpreted a few of them.
    The Fool’s Idol and the Adjudicator for example feel like they completely misunderstood the meaning behind the original designs, and while I would say the Vanguard demon, Maneater were improved from a character design perspective, there’s something so much more unsettling about the dark atmosphere and bright glowing eyes in the original.
    However, I’d say the rest are all pretty great.

    • @Phantom17685
      @Phantom17685 Год назад +2

      I agree, except for Maneaters. In the original, they were some flesh-stone-abominations with immovable statue faces. In the remake they just look... ugh. An improvement, however, was Leechmonger. Sure, he lacks the disgusting pieces of flesh stuck in his body, but the leeches look so fluid and like actual small living beings.
