Not just that, it had visual parody with the X360 version! Same for the sequel! Absolutely unheard of for the time. Game looks and runs great no matter where you play
Is it even a port though? I recall this coming out around the time when developers started to develop games with PS3 as their main target and then port them over to 360 instead, because that usually just worked out better.
The PS3 hardware architecture was such trash. The devs of Dead Space said that porting the game to the PS3 was "challenging", their polite way of saying that programming for the Cell and split RAM was a nightmare because of how idiotically designed the PS3 was.

I remember Dead Space and RE5 were only months apart of release. When RE 5 came out I was a little disappointed it leaned more towards action than horror like RE4. But after I played Dead Space I felt I had A way better horror experience and liked it more. Anyone else felt the same way?
hahaha yes same happened to me, in one hand I had RE5 and in the other Dead Space, played a bit RE5 and I feel a little disappointed, then played Dead Space and I fell in love 😍
Honestly even if I still enjoy RE5, it's easily the worst in the series for me. At least RE6 embraced that sheer stupidity and the gameplay was loads of fun but it makes me SO glad they went back to that slow, atmospheric and dread-filled style for the RE series. 7 and 2 Remake are amazing, currently playing through 3 Remake right now and will likely get 8 on sale. Fingers crossed the Dead Space Remake will be great as well.
For me DS was great game and still looks awesome, while RE5 was mostly unplayable for me (why it's so damn hard to find any ammo?) so I cleared RE5 with infinite ammo cheat. RE5 was very hard to play, gameplay, story and presentation were not good enough but at least graphics were good. The only RE games I like are the original RE3 and RE2 Remake.
Totally. Ironically, I was super hyped for the RE5 release, but then this game kind of took me by surprise. After finishing both, Dead Space was the clear winner. I also remember the fantastic marketing pre-Halloween release. The animated comic books with the Ben Templesmith art(30 Days of Night) were such a good idea because the end of that comic covers all the events of the Ishimura leading up to the beginning of the game. Extraction would eventually create an entire game around it, but I just thought that was such a good idea to get you hyped for the game's release.

26:15 Remaster: A new coat of paint but all the code is basically the same (Mass Effect LE and Halo 1 & 2 remasters) Remake: Using the old code as a reference and redoing it better. Trying to preserve the game as much as possible. (Resident Evil 1 remake) Reimaging: Taking the feel of what came before but putting a new spin on it (RE 2 & 3 remakes)
I generally agree but it depends how you define a coat of paint Remaster is a term taken from the music industry and so is mastering for that matter. In the game world, if you change assets, engines, or drastically change the games visual makeup, you're going way beyond what a remaster is. Hence why saints row 3 remastered is a total lie. Its a remake
Correction on Halo 1 and 2 Anniversary Editions. Those were remakes but was cool tht u culd hotswap between the old and new engine. One example I can replace with tht is Shadow of the Colossus on PS3. Tht one is a remaster. (compared to the one on PS4 which is a remake)
@@HugoStiglitz88 Saints Row 3 remastered still is using most of the same game code. Was never really remade from the ground up. They just added new lighting, graphical techniques, textures and rebuild some of the character models of the main cast. But the map was still the same (models of small objects and buildings being a good example), the audio was still the same (albiet not compressed anymore), etc. The fact tht a good portion of the mods for the original SR3 still works in the remaster is a definite sign tht it is one. Bc if it was a true remake, then none of the mods from the original wuld work on it since its a different code base. So the game engine was still pretty much the same.
I agree with John. I never found any of the Dead Space games to be scary and I play in the dark at night with headphones on. A big part of this is because Isaac is so powerful. Dude can melee necromorphs into pudding. Why should I be scared when I'm the baddest mofo on the station? I do think the atmosphere and tension can be superb though, and I just love it to death.
It's not underrated or undervalued, Dead Space 1 is often considered one of the best games of the PS3/360 gen and what Resident Evil should have become instead of the Call of Duty-ish RE5 which a lot of people hated.
This game was scarry as hell playing with headphones, Richard was wrong comparing it to other horror games, the only game that holds up to it is silent hill 2
After a bit of wrangling, last year I replayed through DS, DS2, and DS3 on my 1080 Ti at 3440x1440/100fps max settings along with a custom ReShade preset...these games still look great, especially DS2 and the first half of DS3. Absolutely cannot wait for the remake!
This game isn't really scary because they telegraph all the scares (or they're just predictable) and all the scares are the same. It doesn't lessen the value for me because I never played the game for the horror elements, but it's definitely less horror and more action.
@@oconnorb23 the devs literally said they wanted to make System Shock 3 but changed their direction after RE4 came out so they mix System Shock settings with RE4 combat oriented gameplay.
Dead Space is one of my favorite games of all time and one that I have completed probably a dozen times. One of my gripes with DS2 and 3 was the pacing and gravitation towards more of an action based shooter where they increased Isaac's arsenal and opened up the environments to the point where it really detracted from the horror portion of the experience imo.
Dead space 2 is great. 3 though is howling and needs to be reimagined with nothing from the original 3 kept in terms of story or location should EA get that far into the remakes. That way we might just get to 4 and other new games.
Finished Dead Space again this week, in glorious 4K120, using DXVK (for VULKAN, vastly more stable than DirectX 9), with Mouse Fix and ReShade AO. An amazing experience
15:20 Yup. This is why I prefer RE1 Remake and RE4 on Wii and Gamecube. Once it was HD'ed, yeah it's in 60 but it looks too clean. So clean in fact, I can see what exactly they wanted to keep hidden in the first place.
I've platinumed it like 3 months ago haha. Was such a nostalgic trip, the game holds up so well, after getting used to the not so good PS3 controller (especially after playing with the DualSense for a few months) and at times choppy 30fps, it's such a blast. Looking forward to the remake, could be my gaming highlight of the next year if they achieve to be on time.

If you guys are going to do more retro videos… You really need to touch on Max Payne, given that it’s 20 years old this year. It had actual bullets as projectiles, particle effects that were phenomenal for a stay, and photorealistic textures compared to games of the same generation. I must have beaten that game over 20 times.

FPS boost uses a simple d3D injector to trick a game to run at 60fps or higher, but it still thinks its running at 30fps. It wuld b pretty finicky for most games from the 7th gen era of gaming. But wuld b cool if they figure a way to b able to do so.
@@leonfrancis3418 no, FPS boost only works on uncapped games like GTA4. There were very few uncapped games on the 360, and dead space is not one of them.

Similar to a GPU control panel override on PC, *Microsoft is able to remove frame-rate caps* at the DirectX API layer while at the same time, the firm can enforce v-sync and engage other enhancements, such as enforced 16x anisotropic filtering. The end result is an increase to frame-rate that allows 30fps games to run at 60fps, or 60fps titles to hit 120fps. In rare cases, FPS Boost can see a game that used to run at 30fps on Xbox One hit 120fps on Series X - as we see with Avalanche's Mad Max and select Lego titles in the latest update."

I disagree. This proves to me that a completely re-imagined remake, with the potential to miss the mark (hope it doesn't), is completely unnecessary. I hope they keep it in the spirit of the first RE remake, but a proper port or remaster with extra bits would have been enough as it is a classic that still holds up. Would have loved a DS4 though, I'll consider that final DS3 DLC scene as another hallucination.
@matej nemec Well tbh I never even played DS3 because I didn’t want it to take away from the overall great experience I had from the first 2 games. Videogames are a media that tends to be forgotten very quickly due to it's rely on constantly evolving hardware. Yet they're a form of media, they're cultural expressions and they deserve to be experienced in it's originally intended form by current an future generations. So, if this remake gets to be a succes, then most people will forget the original and newcomers likely won't ever experience it. If it fails, well, knowing the way EA handle it's IPs, for sure they'll bury the franchise and 4 or 5 years from now you won't have a clean and direct way to play it. They said it in the video, the game holds up very well. Love shooting enemies in this game and react to your shots. Loved it in Goldeneye and was so disappointed that other games didn't really have this feature. Too many games, including landmark games like Half-Life 2, just have bullet sponge enemies that don't really react to anything. Really takes you out of the game.
This was indeed one of the few games that actually show the impact of you hitting an enemy. Same with Medal of Honor Allied Assault at the time. NPC actually reacted to being shot.
Killzone 2 had really good feedback for shooting enemies, they’d stumble backwards from your shots and be pushed all over the place, really made your guns feel powerful. Extremely satisfying
37:20 EA says the games didn't sell well. Multiple millions sold of each game in series but they expected it to sell more than that. Thus was a failure in their eyes. Just blows my mind. You have a team that turns out a good product, that DOES sell well, just not as good as you had hoped for naively (had to be naively, it's a horror game, niche, will never be a BF/COD success) yet you.... don't capitalize on it. Maybe because they're making billions elsewhere, maybe because they're fucking stupid.

Is it even a port though? I recall this coming out around the time when developers started to develop games with PS3 as their main target and then port them over to 360 instead, because that usually just worked out better.
John: Especially on PS3, which was just... Awf- Often rather...
John knew he couldn't diss the PS Triple in fear of awakening Chad Warden's wrath.
The PS3 hardware architecture was such trash. The devs of Dead Space said that porting the game to the PS3 was "challenging", their polite way of saying that programming for the Cell and split RAM was a nightmare because of how idiotically designed the PS3 was.
@@drlight6677 it's so frustrating going back to play PS3 games because they still *look* amazing (TLOU e.g.) but they run so so badly. 9 times out of 10 it's sub 30fps

I remember Dead Space and RE5 were only months apart of release. When RE 5 came out I was a little disappointed it leaned more towards action than horror like RE4. But after I played Dead Space I felt I had A way better horror experience and liked it more. Anyone else felt the same way?
RE: punch a boulder
DS: monster rips your head off and replaces it with a new head
hahaha yes same happened to me, in one hand I had RE5 and in the other Dead Space, played a bit RE5 and I feel a little disappointed, then played Dead Space and I fell in love 😍
I'm been playing on the Xbox series x and the game just holds up today with no problem. I hope the remake doesn't ruin this.
Still holds up. Classic.
The lighting and the way it was used was and still is so clever.

Remaster: A new coat of paint but all the code is basically the same (Mass Effect LE and Halo 1 & 2 remasters)
Remake: Using the old code as a reference and redoing it better. Trying to preserve the game as much as possible. (Resident Evil 1 remake)
Reimaging: Taking the feel of what came before but putting a new spin on it (RE 2 & 3 remakes)
I generally agree but it depends how you define a coat of paint
Remaster is a term taken from the music industry and so is mastering for that matter. In the game world, if you change assets, engines, or drastically change the games visual makeup, you're going way beyond what a remaster is. Hence why saints row 3 remastered is a total lie. Its a remake
Pretty much this.
Also the FF7 remake
Man, I hope the team at EA remaking this watch this video. DF points out so many neat little details that immerse you in the world
now that its out, im glad i can report its really good
Still my favorite game of all time.
Might as well start speedrunning it on PS3 since I pretty much know everything at this point.
Really, this game does not need a remake.
Maybe a good remaster pack like Mass Effect and then a true single-player focused sequel
Yeah it still holds up… but I’d still play the crap out of a remake
Dead Space for me is the most underrated and undervalued game of all time. Its a masterpiece....breathtaking intro even now.
It's not underrated or undervalued, Dead Space 1 is often considered one of the best games of the PS3/360 gen and what Resident Evil should have become instead of the Call of Duty-ish RE5 which a lot of people hated.
Dead Space 1 is a masterpiece, absolutely love it!
The fact that John didn’t find this scary genuinely frightens me haha
I didn't either but dead space 2 got me. That scared the shit out of me a few times. I still love the original
This game isn't really scary because they telegraph all the scares (or they're just predictable) and all the scares are the same. It doesn't lessen the value for me because I never played the game for the horror elements, but it's definitely less horror and more action.
John comes off as a total snob in this video. He can't see past his system shock rose tinted spectacles.

this game does not need a remake. played it on pc on highest setting like 2 years ago. amazing game
That’s the EA rot starting to spread
Dead space 2 is great. 3 though is howling and needs to be reimagined with nothing from the original 3 kept in terms of story or location should EA get that far into the remakes. That way we might just get to 4 and other new games.
This game doesn't need a remake, just an upscaled 60fps remaster of the whole trilogy, then a "sequel".
Dead Space is the best successor to Resident Evil 4. Even more than Village.
Agreed.
Was all set to replay this in 4K on PC until the remaster news dropped. One of my all time favourites
Finished Dead Space again this week, in glorious 4K120, using DXVK (for VULKAN, vastly more stable than DirectX 9), with Mouse Fix and ReShade AO.
An amazing experience
Don't the physics go bonkers past 60fps though lol
MouseFix? I'll have to look into that... there was a spate of PC games from that generation that didn't cope well with mouse input.

Loved the Big Trouble in Little China reference. Stay awesome, guys.
I hope MS can figure out how to do FPS boost on backwards compatible games and get this running at 60 on the Series machines!
FPS boost uses a simple d3D injector to trick a game to run at 60fps or higher, but it still thinks its running at 30fps.
It wuld b pretty finicky for most games from the 7th gen era of gaming.
But wuld b cool if they figure a way to b able to do so.
Doubt EA would allow it as a competitor to their remake
@@nitinanku This is the biggest hurdle.
I think if the remake wasn't in development all three titles would be FPS boosted by now.
@@leonfrancis3418 no, FPS boost only works on uncapped games like GTA4. There were very few uncapped games on the 360, and dead space is not one of them.
@@workoutfanatic7873 "FPS Boost works at the system level of Xbox Series consoles.

@@juliet4093 Just take your reply and apply it to your favorite movie from the past 15 years or so, and you'll see my point.
Yeah still nothing comes close, incredible realism, physics and violence, hope the remake won't disappoint
37:20 EA says the games didn't sell well. Multiple millions sold of each game in series but they expected it to sell more than that. Thus was a failure in their eyes. Just blows my mind.
