    For anyone watching this video and want to play this, I would absolutely recommend to play it on PC with Dash Faction.
    It is a community patch that comes with a ton of bugfixes (including the infamous submarine explosion bug at above 60fps) and adds a ton of quality of life features like DX9 renderer, widescreen resolutions/FOV fixes, AA, AF, autosave function and more etc.
    It is also necessary to run modern mapsets. The recently released Kava campaign (which BTW is an excellent campaign based on mobile Red Faction game's story) need Dash Faction to run.

      The PS2 colors and lights look better though.

    • @atifarshad7624

      @@Clay3613 True. And also AI botmatch support as well (although there's only 9 maps in PS2 version vs the 30 something in PC version, so botmatch gets old fast).
      But other than those, the PC version has much more to offer. Online MP, custom SP and MP content, custom patches that add QoL improvements and much better resolution and framerate (original PS2 version runs at an paltry 20-25 fps vs 240 fps on PC with Dash Faction patch)

      @@atifarshad7624 id probably still prefer playing the ps2 version on my crt just for the overall experience, im not a huge fan of the pc versions look, especially at higher resolutions on a modern display it just doesn't look appealing to me. but im still really happy to see the pc version getting some much needed love from the community

    • @atifarshad7624
      @atifarshad7624 Год назад

      @@gregoryberrycone to be fair, you can lower the resolution and also adjust the brightness and fps cap if you want the ps2 feel, all while not having to deal with long loading times of ps2 version.
      The only real thing the ps2 version has over the pc version is the botmatch support (and that too is only 9 maps).

    • @terabitdefiance8022
      @terabitdefiance8022 2 года назад +18

      Its still insane. I guess its too much to ask for what we already have but more these days. Same reason i dont play Need for Speed games anymore. We used to be able to customize cars like clay with a full spectrum of RGB colors. The whole dayum crayon factory... and today we can barely get a 10 pack of colors. Halo does the same thing. So many games do.

    • @anon_y_mousse
      @anon_y_mousse Год назад +5

      @@terabitdefiance8022 I think the reason we've lost so many of these customization features is because programmers are so much less capable these days. Yeah, there's super realistic graphics with ray traced lighting, but most of the work is done with tools that make it easy for an artist to do that job. Things like exploding geometry, especially at the resolutions we get now, are incredibly processor intensive, even for a GPU, and without good programmers who have a solid understanding of math, it's just not going to happen. At an intentionally nerfed resolution, I think even an average programmer could do it, but someone has to have the initiative.

    • @terabitdefiance8022
      @terabitdefiance8022 Год назад +4

      @Anony Mousse oh of course. At that's just the tip of the iceberg. Back then the game devs could take to the engine devs and everything was in sync. Maybe there were hiccups. But not to the scale of today where everyone in office at this point doesn't know who make the code for anything. Nobody can get to know anything either since (from what it seems like) everyone's hired for 6 months or 1 title and let go. Your entire comment and this one included are only 2 things in the list.. it could go on and on really.

  • @cycleoffire2220
    @cycleoffire2220 2 года назад +74

    There is something about 2000-2001 graphics that speaks to me - whether it's vertex lighting, smooth fixed-pipeline shaders or phototextures (or combination of it) - all together it gives such a "clear as a glass" look.
    Deus Ex, RF, DNF2001, Serious Sam, RTCW, Max Payne, Codename 47, first builds of Stalker - many good examples out there. There is some specific realism in those visuals, that modern PBR-based renderer is just not being able to replicate and communicate.

    • @SAGERUNE
      @SAGERUNE 2 года назад +9

      I think its still a valid choice today. Looking at gloomwood as my modern example, the intent of the art matters more than the fidelity...does it get across what its designed to be? YES? then lets move on to whats important, design and gameplay.

    • @marioe.4400
      @marioe.4400 2 года назад +12

      That's one of the factors that makes me prefer the original Half-Life over the sequel and its extra campaigns - - the distinct contrast between an enemy and the environment allows for more precise shooting.
      There's a reason Counter-Strike 1.6 is so beloved too, all these years later...
      I'd go for Unreal Tournament '99 over almost any other FPS' from the "modern era".

    • @ImGonnaFudgeThatFish
      @ImGonnaFudgeThatFish 2 года назад +1

      It can look nice and can be done by design but going as far as to make up terms like "specific realism" is silly. You need to be honest that it's nostalgia speaking here.

    Dude! I'm playing this on the PS5 right now! The resolution was definitely never supposed to be above 480p. You can see the enemies T posing off in the distance as they float towards you. You can't do any damage till you move closer to them also. It's pretty funny but kinda bull towards the end of the game because of the higher resolution on PS4/PS5 allowing you to see enemies further out than you could back on PS2 and not being able to damage them. Such a great game though!

I wonder if you can get it to happen on a multiplayer map in 2 Player Mode? There are some big maps there to potentially see it? Oh! Even on PS5 you still get fps dips. One of the reasons it dips is because one room had to many chairs on screen. But it will also dip if there are to many NPC's on screen or if there are to many ships on screen also. You'd think the PS5 could tackle that stuff?... But nope! And that's pretty cool you have them! That N Gage version is very unique!

    You aren't wrong about the console development part - Prior to RF Volitions experience was either PC or the joystick controls - not controllers themselves, it was a big adjustment for both Summoner and Red Faction
    Edit: If you happen to be interested, there is a mini-documentary called "The Secret History of Volition" - it describes their origins from the very first games they made including Descent and goes all the way up to ( I think) Red Faction Armageddon and SR3/4 ?
    Edit Edit: I got to the part where i think you talked about the documentary and i feel silly :'D in any case, speaking directly to the N-gage, a community member did a full port of the Ngage version onto the PC using REDs level designer - so we have a PC version of the ngage that you can play from the mod set up in RF :D
    Also Dash faction was recently updated to add auto saves to each physical level transition :D
    OK final edit >< - RF2 was a console port rather than made on PC - the xbox version was the console of choice out of PS2/Xbox/Gamecube - I suspect that Outrage when they did the port didn't care to put a dedicated multiplayer out on it since their only official instruction was probably just get the game on PC. Even the customisation aspect of multiplayer on PC RF2 is diluted away from its console state.

    Thank you for the nostalgia trip! I loved digging and digging on PC. I remember doing that with the drill for what had to be hours. It was also fun to create shortcuts and flank enemies. The 2nd game really dropped the ball on a lot of this, but I still enjoyed it for what it was. The following games were hit or miss, too.

    "PARTY TIME!" Now this is a game in need of a remaster/remake. Played the Ps2 version over and over again back in the day. That soundtrack, especially with the synths in calming and action scenarios was so perfect. The multiplayer is also top notch. Fast pace arena style, and it had bots! LRG recently did a physical PS4 copy. With the collectors edition coming in a PC Big Box style packaging. and a Vinyl of the soundtrack was only the icing. Also I hear you mention the Summoner game. Interestingly enough, the main menu on the PS2 has an option to view the Summoner trailer.

    I remember this being a sleeper hit from an unknown studio. I bought it only because it had this weird minimalistic cover (unlike most game covers at the time) and was about shooting things on Mars. And even though it was a very short game (can be completed in under 3 hours) - oh boy what a journey it was. Every level was an entirely different game mechanic. This is what we completely lost since late 00s - nowadays games just get one thing right and run with it until end credits with no variety.

  • @desmondbrown5508

    I think a large reason we didn't see many games implementing this level of destruction was because there was such a huge push to always use the hardware to maximum in order to get as-accurate-as-possible lighting, shadows, texture details and geometry. And the push is still happening despite it leveling out. I can imagine in order to get something combined like Red Faction 1 terrain destruction + Red Faction Guerrilla building destruction we'd need a game that pushes back to early PS4/Xbox One visuals. I mean the most terrain customizable games are typically far removed from realism for a reason.

    I bought the PS2 Classic version on PS4 around 4 years ago, having really enjoyed Red Faction Guerrilla on PS3 years ago and while not being a big FPS guy, I can appreciate these Half-Life era shooters. The game definetly felt extremely early-PS2, mainly due to the controls, but before I knew I spent all weekend playing through it twice to unlock most trophies. Really enjoyed it, but can only recommend it to those familiar with games and controls of that era.
