  • Central PA may be one of the most undiscovered riding destinations on the east coast. Only the locals know how awesome these trails are, which makes sense. How do you articulate to outsiders how “fun” these trails are while explaining how the trails are stocked with rock gardens that have no apparent lines and no end in sight?
It’s one of those things you just have to experience. And once you do, it clicks! Sure these trails don’t possess the flow, berms, and jumps that some other destinations have but the challenge, scenery, and shear number of trails scattered throughout the Rothrock State Forest will keep you coming back weekend after weekend. If not to check more trails off your list then to keep learning and trying to figure out how to smooth out these rough and rugged single tracks.
The highlights of this Epic route are Tussey’s Ridge Trail, a jagged rock lined ridge with views of the surrounding valleys, Lonberger Trail, a old time favorite that has been around for decades and is constantly being updated to accommodate the masses, and John Wert, a flat trail that will test your mettle with it’s sporadic sections of extremely difficult rock gardens, rhodo tunnels, and more rock gardens. If you can check this route off your list without too much damage to body or bike you can certainly call yourself a “Rock Garden God”.

Loved the video! I've ridden Rothrock many times and I share Emily's feelings on John Wert...it's a Rocky beast!

A lot of us locals grew up in Rothrock riding those trails on rigid forked hard tails !

Man that stuff is awesome! Here at Melrose in South Australia, we're just about to get our very first IMBA Epic trail. It's going to be a 40 odd km rocky mountain climb / descent. I can't wait to ride it. Good stuff guys 😉👍🏻

These actually aren’t State Gamelands, this is a State Forest. I make that distinction because it is an important one in PA. The Pennsylvania Game Commision manages the State Gamelands and they do not like mountain bikers and can fine you for riding on Gamelands. State Forests are multi-use, so you can ride, hike, or whatever, but it is still smart to wear orange during hunting seasons. I wish the Game Commission would be more reasonable with the mountain biking subculture. There are a lot of trails on State Gamelands...

      Thanks for that distinction, Matt.

I regularly ride here and on the coopers gap side of the forest on a hardtail - and I don't think it is any LESS fun! Choose a good high volume tire you can run nice and low, absolutely have a dropper post (if you EVER want kids), and have a good system for keeping your dang chain on! Screaming down long mountain trail though coming up on the "tree trunk jump" - absolutely terrifying though. That's a wheel lockup for me!

Good wrap-up. Fully agree on the tires and suspension. That would be ugly - but still possible - on a hardtail.
Raystown has the flow blue and green if that’s your preference.

I did this on a hard tail xc bike and it was awful.

Nice vid - think a Honzo could hack it? I think my Process would be overkill. Thanks!

Where's the flow! Not my cup of tea but thanks for filming so I never have to experience it.
