- As one of the most famous songs of all time, "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz is a timeless treasure. In this arrangement for solo marimba, Robert Oetomo combines jazzy harmonies, quasi improvisation, and classical romantic influences to create a rendition that is mysterious, lyrical, and remains as heartwarming as the original.
Music composed by: Harold Arlen
Arranged for marimba and performed by: Robert Oetomo
Sheet Music available from Tapspace at www.tapspace.com
This solo first caught my attention when I was 13, I had just started marching band and was looking for a solo to play. This was clearly out of my league at the time and I dreamed of being able to play it. I thought this is something only a professional could play. Yesterday, I preformed it and received a perfect score. I couldn't be happier and it's all because of this.
this makes me so happy. i was in the exact same position 8 years ago, but i never actually learned the piece. props to you

This type of stuff inspires yet intimidates me at the same time as a musician
I liked this comments 2 years ago and I still feel the same way lol. When I see something performed so well for some reason I get intimidated and idk why. Like why don't I just think positively ike "wow i'm going to get that good one day" or something
oh ok why do i see you everywhere
Bro I'm playing this right now, hard af, but so pretty
I love having this guy as a conductor
@@denimholman9829 is it? I’m thinking about playing this for next yr solo and ensemble, I’m playing my first 4 mallet solo this year
You move across the marimba like water. It's honestly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever seen.
Proud to say I finally performed this piece my senior year. I dreamed of playing it since 8th grade. I am from TX so UIL solo and ensemble is a very big thing. I was the first in school history to attempt it. I not only got the Division 1 but also an outstanding performer award. Found my success over the rainbow. 🎶
That's fantastic, Joshua! Congratulations!!
Ayyyy, I got the OP award as well for playing reflections on the natures of water
@@hunteryates9437 Jesus christ that piece is insane
I've been watching a lot of marimba videos on youtube. There are so many wonderful players and composers/arrangers, but Robert Oetomo's arrangement of Over the Rainbow is one of the most brilliant and beautiful arrangements I've ever heard for marimba. Well done.
1hotday1 if you like this you'll love pure imagination on marimba. I can't remember who performs it but give it a search you won't be disappointed
Playing this piece is probably the best I’ve ever felt when playing marimba
I am currently a high school percussionist in Texas. I really wanted to perform this solo, and I finally got the chance to play it at solo and ensemble. At first when I was playing this solo, it was just for solo and ensemble purposes. However, the piece was so beautiful that it became a part of who I was when I was performing. Not only did I get a one at state, but I also received the prestigious outstanding performer award. Good luck to everybody that's performing this solo in the future, and my one advice would be to actually embrace what you are playing and play it with all your heart.
That marimba is gorgeous and the song too. This guy is so graceful as well.
This has to be one of the most relaxing instruments ever made.
It's one thing to hear this on video but it's just so much more to hear it in real life. Although I have never heard Rob play this particular song, I've heard a few of his songs live and I just want to say; playing just the notes is only half of any performance, it's just as important to compose yourself and flow with the music, as you can see him do so in this video. I'm really happy I can have this inspiring man as my conductor, if you ever get the chance to hear his performances live, I recommend you do.
I can see why I keep seeing this arrangement in the popular sections of steve weiss and lone star percussion. Gorgeous, masterfully arranged. I look forward to seeing what else Oetomo does in the future.
This is the first marimba solo I think I've fallen absolutely in love with, definitely buying this and I hope I'll be able to perform it this well
Out of the masses or "robots" who bang without any understanding a multitude of notes, some of which even call themselves professionals, - Finally a musician on marimba!!
Quit meatriding
I just played this for solo ensemble today and got top marks. Thanks to Mr. Oetomo for arranging this beautiful piece!
OMG....So beautiful........just close your eyes...... 5 mintues......hold your tablet.......feel the vibrations......hear the music in your soul.......just let yourself go there...
His sound is very very soft, tender and beautiful. I love his sound and music.
2:31 is by far the best part of this arrangement. Very beautiful, I'm in love.
I've watched this at least 50 times and I love it each time
Get yourself a pair of high quality Bose headphones and listen at full volume. Your ears will thank you for a heavenly experience. Amazingly well arranged!
One of my favorite tunes of all time, and this arrangement is fantastic. I can't wait to play it!
That marimba and his technique are beautiful!
It is so good to hear beautiful melodies such as Rainbow played by a fine musician. There is so much "new age' stuff on
RUclips with college groups that play music that goes no where and says nothing.. Thanks for your offering! Paul
I think this is the BEST ARRANGEMENT I've ever heard in my life! Excellent job Robert!!!
I’m going to take a big challenge and learn this solo for my junior year of high school. I really want to make this 100% perfect and beautiful so I can play this for my director and my peers
did you play it
Wow. Absolutely stunning. The quality of sound is amazing. Listening to this with headphones made it even better. Amazing job!
Such a fantastic arrangement and performance -- really showcases the beauty of the marimba. I want this to be on the list for what humanity is remembered for.
Masterfully played, and quite exceptional to listen to.

Ahhh I love it!!! Wow that was so emotional and gorgeous, thanks for sharing
This song and pure tone

A beautiful music. I'm a percussionist, but sadly my concert band only have a cheap glockenspiel, and I never seen and played a vibraphone or a marimba in real life
I hope you've played both by now. They're wonderful instruments.
So beautiful, gives me goosebumps every time!
Bravissimo! A performance with heart and soul!!!!
Worst case scenario: (plays through entire thing perfectly)
CameraMan: I think a snare is still on. Jerry can you find it and turn it off? Thanks. Oh by the way we have to record the whole thing again...
This is a professional video :)
Such artistry. Thanks for sharing this with the world. This made me smile.
I’m sure Harold is very proud.
Wonderful arrangement, Rob. 🙂
Great performance! I always struggled with mallets in my teens and twenties and never got the hang of four mallets. How cool would it be to pick it back with a goal to learn this piece someday. Beautiful piece and amazing performance. Very moving and inspiring!
I’m here 4 years later to tell you to not give up! I bought a marimba when I was 38 to pick up where I left off in my early 20s❤️
How beautiful his sound is!!!! It's as soft as a feather and like and water drops falling from the leaves.
Crying ... it's so great! Thank you.
man i remember watching this 8 years ago thinking this was the damn epitome of marimba. now high school kids are performing this for UIL and i can’t believe the skill ceiling these kids have now. amazing, truly
The acoustics in this video are out of this world.
Really moving... thank you
One of the best versions I have EVER heard. Bravo !
bellissima l'esecuzione e fantastico l' arrangiamento
Beautiful. Well done. Subtle. Thanks.
What a masterpiece of art!

I fell in love with this song. Sound like music of actual heaven
Best marimba performer I've seen! And the arrangement is superb!
Truly beautiful.
Dreamy song, dreamy arrangement, dreamy performance! Bravo!
Bravo! So beautiful. Thank you.
Wow. Beautifully arranged and performed.
Gorgeous
I have come back watched this video a countless number of times. Each and every time has been 4 minutes and 56 seconds of absolute pure bliss. I can’t express enough how grateful I am that this piece exists, it’s absolutely my favorite marimba solo of all time. Thank you.
I even love this solo so much that I got it for myself and am currently learning it. It’s almost even more fun to learn than to listen to; it’s just such a well put-together piece of music that I am, without a doubt, looking forward to getting to fully learn and perform all the way through. I just love it so damn much :,)
I have learned all of the notes and am working on getting more musicality/technique into what I’m playing. Sadly I currently don’t have access to a 5-octave marimba, so I’ve just been using my piano to learn the notes and get things like tempo down. Playing it on a real marimba is a different story though, some of the chords are a pain to reach for (even with long arms!) but that probably comes with not having played on a marimba for months. Can’t wait to be able to play it fluidly!
@@Xetaas the graduated keys and huge intervals are what makes the marimba an instrument that requires extra attention.
if you want to practice, you can play the stuff that you cannot play an octave up, then just be aware of the larger gaps when you transition to a full 5 octave.
Beautiful.
Respect!!!!!!!!! Wating to hear you alive in Tabasco, Mexico!
Beautiful Piece and great performance!
Nothing so beautiful compared to this
Magical
I have been left speechless..... All I can say is ---- wow.
Marvellous SIR... THANK you!!
One of my favorite marimba arrangements. I am playing this piece rn for my lesson-absolutely beautiful work Mr. Oetomo
Like a sound of piano!

M a s t e r p i e c e.
This takes me home to Kansas.
Thank You.
Amazing
Wow!
This might be one of the most satisfying sounds I have ever heard😂
i played this and got best of the day!
Imagine if you didn't hit that last chord XD
You mean that octave?
nathanpiazza Octave is the distance between 2 of the same notes
yeah that was an octave
I’m pretty he would’ve finished on the 7th if he didn’t hit the octave Db at the end, which would have been weird.
Eb*
Wow. Serene majesty.
The run at 1:21 had me shook. I'm gonna attempt to play this
I wanna play this😍
amazing!
The fourth page of this solo is a struggle.. Beautiful arrangement nonetheless and it will forever be one of my all time favorite marimba solos
I played it for my solo this year and got a 1
chewbacca11jv2 rip man
Gus Yonkers that’s good...
@@zettabyte0551 But it ain't a 1+
This is SO beautiful.
I had so much fun learning this piece. I only had a 4.7 octave marimba sadly so I missed all the import low notes, but I could still play most of it. I was going to learn Pure Imagination, but there were spots on the tapspace website so I only learned the first few lines. I learned all of that threw the website, but I am going to purchase originals when I can tho.
Pure imagination is so good
Bravo!
