The thing that surprises me the most about this piece is that it's even possible... It feels like I'm pushing the limits of what I'm able play by learning Moon Chasers by Mark Ford, and seeing this beast of a piece not only being played but performed?? Insane stuff, makes me wonder what I'll be able to do in the future.
Moon Chasers is beautiful! If you want to see more limits pushed, Niflheim(Csaba Zoltan) and Etude in E Minor(Casey Cangelosi) are pretty crazy in my opinion. I am currently practicing Luminosity(Tomasz Golinski), which is awesome and pretty similar to this one in a few ways.
I can't describe in words how this piece makes me feel. I have never listened to something so beautiful, yet complex. It makes me love the marimba more than I already do, which I didn't believe was possible. I can't wait to finish learning this piece for my Junior year of High School!
I like the recap of the main theme at the end in A-flat minor, really brings out the heroic and powerfulness of the melody and bring the solo to a close. There are so many contrast and colors in this solo I love every second of it.
Man this is so good. I've been listening to this on repeat for hours now, it's just great. I can only thank you. And this is coming from someone who has been playing this instrument for a decade now.
I could not pause once it began, I love the way you play marimba! You definitely provoked an emotional response from somewhere deep within my memories.
I absolutely love your marimba solos, they're so much fun to play and the modern touch means I never get tired of hearing them and it's always new to the audience. Keep it up man, I'm so excited to learn it as my next solo!
This has got to be my favorite marimba solo of all time; I've probably listened to this at least 100 times. I'm definitely going to try getting more comfortable with Burton grip so that I can play this as well as you have.
I actually can't get enough of this piece. I first heard this in the first week of it being on YT and I just keep coming back. The technique needed for a piece as complex as this is incredible to me and I hope that one day I can perform this piece to this level of expertise.
This piece is absolutely amazing. It definitely hits me in the feels. I love the aggressiveness and then tenderness at some parts! I want to buy it and play it for my senior recital
This is absolutely beautiful. I've been listening to this on repeat over, and over, and over.... for the past few days while preparing for and writing my exam. The melody is going to live in my mind rent-free for as long as it wants.
Can't believe I'm crying again to yet another inspiring marimba piece. Thank you for bringing this masterpiece to life. I'm simply blown away. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world
I struggle to explain how incredible I find this piece. The music, the perfomance, the technique! I thank and applaud you for your work. You are an inspiration. Cheers!
I’m more surprised he is using birch grip instead of Steven’s, which is pretty interesting, and cool to see, especially b/c of all the high octave switches.
Thank you for your music man, this piece is among the most beautiful pieces that I know of on marimba, and even in general. I bought the sheet music about half a year ago despite only owning a 4,3 octave marimba. I try playing what pieces I can on it but it's a struggle, I hope I can someday afford my own 5 octave so I can finally play this masterpiece of a piece. Thank you!
How did you play so accurately the whole time.... What the actual heck, wow ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥! I am so grateful for someone like you to appear in our world, the art of marimba music will definitely expand so much!
@@joeyengmusic i have one question, because in bar 21 with your left hand you are playing: d flat - a flat, but the score says: d flat - b flat. Which one is correct? thank you!
I just bought this, and it is the most fun I've every had playing a marimba. This is my 3rd 4-mallet marimba solo I've played after Strive to be Happy, and it's just an all around blast. Thank you for the amazing piece!!!
I’m barely 13 but I have been mastering it, although only learning it for 1 year, and by the 3 month mark, already able to play grade 8 and getting 146 in exams. I’ve decided that I will learn this song. It’s so beautiful
I’m playing « The narrows » for the moment but damn , square one is just amazing , I can’t wait to improve myself to be able to play this piece. You did a very good job Joey !
Just started learning this piece for jury's- and omg playing it slow is just as emotional and impactful and I can't wait till I'm at tempo. This is now one of my favorite solos ever
do you happen to remember the mallets you were using for this performance, I really like their resonance and warmth. Awesome performance by the way, I'm going to buy this soon!!!❤❤
Thank you! I was using the Lynn Vartan graduated set from Marimba One. Thank you for having an interest in my music! If you perform it anywhere, please do let me know!
I love this piece and the message as well... So much so that i bought it with the little money in my account.😂 What mallets did you happen to use? I'm having a problem of choosing which mallets I would like to use for this piece.
@joeyengmusic I was wondering where this would fit in the grading scale as a marimba solo ?, I'm a percussionist in my undergrad of University and I am looking at cool solos to work my way up to for my senior recital in the next few years
It’s the Lynn Vartan graduated set from Marimba One. He uses rattan, but I’m using birch for my performance of it. They’re pretty hard (besides the bottom mallet) and one-toned but they sound goes for this piece, and work well because they’re light
I’ve heard of the LV’s that you’re using and do you think it is worth the purchase? are they very versatile across pieces or are they too hard for most? also I’m loving the burton grip but a little curious what drive you to playing this in burton grip? I love this piece and plan on playing it next year for my junior solo. If you don’t recommend the LV’s graduated set, what mallets would you recommend? Again this is an epic piece.
this is such a beautiful performance and composition! i want to play this piece but i only know stevens grip. do you think i should learn burtons grip for this solo?
I’m surprised the government hasn’t hunted this guy down. Those octaves are insane
RIGHT!!!!!!
It’s not often one gets to see a marimba being used to its full potential. This was lovely. Thanks for playing for us and posting it on RUclips

moon chasers, damn, I LOVE the style of these two songs
5:22 gotta be historically one of the greatest Melodies on marimba, and the sound and power of nearly 2/3 of the marimba being used there is insane
The angle from directly above is really unique, love it!
Thank you! We had a bit too much fun with a drone 🛸
As a Bari Sax player who has never touched a mallet instrument before, this was gorgeous! Love the reoccurring themes dude
