I bought the BMPCC4K when it first came out, and I didn’t really learn how to use it for a long time since I’m not a pro. I’m glad I kept it, because with all the firmware updates that have been released, it’s like having a whole new camera. The Gen 5 colors and the gyro stabilization are excellent. Basic color correction is easy. Just shoot raw, and convert to rec 709 in Davinci, and it looks fantastic. It took me a while to get it all rigged out little by little. Now it has a cage, a Metabones speed booster, a Sigma 18-35 lens, an external SSD, a Shinobi monitor, and a V-mount battery. Plus I finally learned how to use it. I also have a Sony a7S3 as my run and gun setup. I basically leave that on a gimbal, with the Sony 20mm lens. That Sony auto focus is fantastic, and the camera is just about idiot proof. For photos, I have a Sony a7R3, and a Canon 5Dmk4, both of which I got dirt cheap used. They are both fantastic cameras, and the prices on them are dropping like crazy since everybody is always upgrading to the latest and the greatest, but a few years ago, they where the latest and the greatest.

Cinema camera has that less sharpened, less contrasty look, also it has really better highlight rolloff. I didn't know what the "cinematic look" was, but after watching a kotnof footages, i realize that highlight rolloff really takes the edge off in the image, and the less sharp less contrasty nature of thr footage also makes it really appealing.

I have the Panasonic GX80 (and viltrox adapter) for stills and just a month ago, I got a fully rigged bmpcc 4k with two XLR Microphones and 256GB CFast Card with V-mount battery and a monitor for less than half the price it would've cost.
I already have two licenses of Davinci Resolve.
Here in Ghana and on RUclips, people throw shades on the BMPCC 4K and the m43 system. This makes people who already own them to sell for cheap and people like me collect them. I'm loving life right now on my bmpcc 4k.
For the first time in my life, I have access to 12bit Raw at 4K.

FX9 and FS7 user here. My clients like colors baked in. It is undeniable that the BM cameras can and do look better with the raw post workflow. With that said for my clients having the colors be tunable and tweakable beyond just WB is important to me. Therefore FX3 (plus VND for me. 6k Pro from BM is FIRE though.

Image quality wise, they’re so similar that 99% of people watching your film/video won’t notice.
Plus, the Sony with phantom luts + the black pro mist makes it more cinematic than ever. The FX3 and A7siii are phenomenal cameras.

I had the BMP6K and sold everything for the FX3, as a solo shooter, the FX3 is a dream. Yes the P6K is slightly better quality, but no body on RUclips or social networks could tell the difference. And not to mention low-light, Any Sony will eat the BM for lunch. I loved my P6K but it was a PIA to rig, battery consumption and manual focusing. FX3 No crop and up to 120FPS 10 bit 4.2.2 in 4K

i know i'm late to the party here but i wanted to point out a few things i think you missed. i am also a fan of both the sony and blackmagic, i've owned a few cameras of each brand, currently the sony a7r2 for photography and the bmpcc and bmpcc4k, which i love dearly. having the ability to shoot raw internally is such an understated advantage, sony just can't keep up. Your experience with the battery life is a little skewed, 3rd party batteries are never as good as brand name, I'm able to consistently get 40-50mins on my bmpcc4k with newer 3rd party batteries, whereas my sony drains older 3rd party batteries in 10-15 mins, so the difference there I find is directly related to the age of the batteries used, with new batteries you'll get much closer to the advertised life. For the slowmo recording, the bmpcc4k can shoot 120fps (windowed in raw) at 2.6k, and 75fps in 4k @ 2.4:1 aspect ratio. While the image is slightly softer (creamy) on the blackmagic it is definitely a more cinematic image than the sony can do and infinitely better to work with in post, also the ability to record externally to SSDs is underrated. The constant updates to the blackmagic cameras are always adding cool new features to an already awesome camera system, not to mention you're getting a world class editor and the absolute best colour correcting software available for free with the camera. anyways, just thought I'd throw that in there, good video tho, keep it up.

Great review. As a hobby video shooter intending to do nature videos both of these cameras appeal to me. I have 2 good but older apsc mirrorless cameras, a Canon and a Fuji that take great photos and video, but have real limits on what you can do in video. I recently bought a used but mint condition Sony a6000 to explore the Sony system. I quickly realised it takes great photos but its video output really is not great. The FX3 is out of my price range so I was looking at the Fuji X t4 and the Sony a7 series - but I am reluctant to commit to a full frame system. The new Sony FX 30 looks really promising, but then a BMPCC 4k is cheaper and comes with licence for Davinci resolve. Another choice, though with major limits, is to get a secondhand BMPCC original. Choices, choices, 😊😊😊 The FX30 is still too expensive for the moment, like most Sony gear when it is first released. 😮

Hello Philip. Thanks for the comment. My advice is to get a Blackmagic Pocket 4K, may be even second hand. You will not regret it, it is the best camera out there for that price. @@MamoAir Hi, thanks for taking the time to read my comment and for your response. In the short term I want a travel camera for video for a trip to Europe and later the BMPCC 4K for local nature and landscape videos. I have seen a few videos where people took the BMPCC 4K and used it for travel videos, street scenes etc. I am not sure if that is really practical but the result was great. I really like the video you sent a link to. It is a style I prefer, the subject is in context rather than isolated by excessive blur or bokeh. Yes I had already subscribed, thanks again.

@@phillean Great, I would take the Blackmagic anywhere. If you want to take the best footage, there's no alternative in my opinion, image quality is stunning and for travel videos is a great match. Yet, it's not the most portable camera, you're right. I'm sure the Sony a7III or a7sIII are good more portable options. I guess you need to compare your priorities. Mine is the image quality 🙂

Would love a comparison between the BMPCC4K vs the fx30, since sensor sizes are very close. Price is closer too, and the 6k downsampling looks crisp AF.
I own both, I love BM UI vs Sony (especially since I have a Japanese version, so everything is in Japanese haha), I hate the BM form factor, battery life, no Inbody stabilisation (but Resolve gyro option is great), no AF. I would say the Sony one is easier for unassuming run and gun, vs the BM absolutely needs some king if rigging to be usable.

Do they look very similar to you?
The FX3 image quality looks like crap.
It’s not about the matching colors, it is about that horrifying digital cellphone look that you get with Sony with a price tag of 5000€, external 10bit, no Davinci BRAW magic and the worst menu in camera history.
    A fully articulated unusable screen.
    Sony FX3 is total garbage.

I think once you add on a pro-most filter, use Phantom Luts and learn to effectively color-grade the footage, you can get very cinematic and beautiful footage from the FX3. I've seen plenty of them on RUclips if you look hard enough.
Also, I remember watching a blind test video and could not tell which was which as they were both so similar. Regardless, both cameras can look very similar if you put them in the right hands. I understand what you mean though, because I initially thought the same thing until I began watching more content and seeing that the FX3 is very capable and can look very similar to the BM.

Not a honest review, the facts aren't equally brought into the video. For example u dont said that the fx3 is recording in 4k 120p. Ur are not letting the facts speak for them selfs which means Ur are afraid the Sony somehow would be better than the black magic pocket cc4k

Thanks for checking the video. This is my honest review and my decision according to my experience. If you do not agree you are free to think it differently without accusing people online or you could test the cameras yourself and then make your own review. Ciao ciao
