This is actually a great 'advert' for the FX30, really. I was surprised that there wasn't a larger gap between cameras. I do think people give the rolling shutter a hard time on the FX30, though. It is about 20-25% faster than the 6K, and similar to the C300, C70, etc... It's beyond the point of noticing it in most situations anyway.

@@matteobertoli Yeah, I've got an FX30. I have noticed the artifacting. It's not great but not a huge deal for the most part and you can tame it. I do definitely agree that the 6K is the better image, but it's known for that. It's just cool that it can get in the ball park. You should try an FS7 or older Sony (if you haven't)... terrible colours.

What if you shoot at ISO400 on Sony instead of 800? Will it reduce noise in the shadows? Or the highlights would be even worse in that case?

    • @matteobertoli

Standard practice if you want to reduce noise is to use Cine EI and overexpose by a step or two and then reduce exposure in post.

Thanks for the video comparison, one thing I did notice is the shot in the park, you could see how all the green reflection was all over the place and this created a green tint on the skins whereas on the p6k, it was so neutral and it provided a way more natural looking imagery.

Not me, not anymore. Fx30 is a better purchase, less rigging, cheaper, better lens selection, small files, smaller/lighter setup, stills, ois/ibis, travel friendly, great build, great autofocus etc. This list kills black magic imo. I exposed using false colors, as it should be. If the highlights go red in the false, there is nothing to recover because they are clipped. I exposed Sony footage properly, didn’t underexpose nor overexposed.

@@matteobertoli log its not linear, exposing to the right its the way to go in sony slog, check the charts "slog vs linear vs rec709 courve". You will notice that you have way more headroom in the highlights

@@miloplacas false colors are applied to the LOG. If you clip your highlights in the log the highlights are clipped. The ETTR debate is a thing of the past. With film it made sense because it was much easier to retain highlights than shadows. With digital is the opposite. Again, I use false colors to monitor the LOG and I never let my highlights going to the red. If you do they are gone, forever.

man as an avid consumer of your material I've noticed you must have accidentally put 3 unrelated vidweos in your "gear" playlist towards the end! just a heads up

I'm just at the first clip now. But you're using the the Sony at it's base ISO and not using the base ISO of the bmpcc6k. That's not proper testing imo.

And yet, the Pocket is doing much better in the shadows. If I was using the Pocket at 400 it would be even cleaner

There is a lot of urban legend about Blackmagic in my opinion. I can tell you that a Blackmagic user can get excellent results on the Sony before a Sony user gets usable results in with the Blackmagic. I know this from experience. Your great colors come from knowing how to get the best of your camera system. Many users are not like that these days, they just buy the camera and expect to get awesome footage. I think Sony is the one brand that understands this, that is why they make things easy but you can certainly take the FX30 very far in the creative places. For example, I am testing the phantom luts and it's like having a brand new camera

In high contrast scenes the shadows on the Sony just fall apart. Nothing you can do about that. If you can’t see them from the video, just download the master file and see for yourself ;)

I 100% agree with everything you've said here. And the images of course speak for themselves! The Blackmagic image is superior in every situation! There's a depth to it... But I must also say that I'm genuinely surprised at how much Sony seems to have improved their colour science on the FX30
