I liked the 'look' of the FX30 over the FX6, it seems like the cinema cameras like FX6 record the image without enhancing it while the FX30 processes the image more. The FX6 image leaves it for you to enhance with lighting, or in post with color grading, etc.
Im excited that this camera gives you so many pro features and you could get 2 bodies, a standard zoom and 3 sigma primes for less than the fx6. With the audio handle and all the sd cards, batteries and other grip you need. Unreal!
At what point did you do any shooting in low light? I want to capture outdoor adventure type footage and nothing you showed gave me any confidence I can use the FX30 in "blue hour": ie: pre-dawn and post sunset
12:10 Sharp vs Soft - hear saying growing up from my dad like Nikon's Nikor lens was "razor sharp" and the middle of f stop range is usually the sharpest part of the lens. RUclips is slowly opening my eyes to "digitally sharpened". I took pics with my phone and then zoomed and compared to the actual object. I noticed unnatural lighting and colors and details that the camera added. Also, failed the watermark test - Took a picture where the last letters are almost unreadable and noticed the phone "enhanced" them to the point of being easy to read in the picture.
Its ridiculous to me that cameras like the a7iv don’t have internal LUTs or shutter angle or some of the other cine features. Its a hybrid…which means it SHOULD have both…cine features and photo features… there’s NO excuse for them not having them when it’s primarily software/firmware. Any camera that has picture profiles should be able to load LUTs internally. Shutter angle really shouldn’t be that hard to put in any camera that can do video… since it’s essentially just a setting like “auto ISO” etc.
I have a question? If one is to use CINE EI and baking in a lut. Compare using flexible ISO and then applying a lut in post. will it then have equal quality or will it be worse?
I'm planning on getting my FX3 in a few months! I am super excited to get my hands on my first cinema camera, I've been wanting this camera ever since it came out aha

This video solidifies the high quality that can be found in the FX30. In all of the tests you showed, the FX30 footage remained completely useable. The low light performance was quite impressive even with its smaller sensor. I have the A7iv and it's quite impressive on its own. Should I trade my A7iv in for the FX30? It is something I am considering. I am a low budget filmmaker, so it is something I am looking into.
I love hearing your take when it comes to the professional side of things. I do weddings so I don't always have control of my lighting situations. Out of the A7iv and FX30, how do you think the FX30 holds up in low light situations like dance floors/receptions or areas that you don't have lighting rigs?
I recommend watch CVP and their underexposure test. the A7IV is better when you screw up your exposure and try bring it back. I recommend as always over exposure as best as possible in camera
I am in doubt about buying an FX30 vs A7IV. I like to shoot my social events without any added lighting (It's a personal thing) and the question at hand is whether the FX30 will be good enough in lowlight so I don't have to deal with noise in post production. I love the form factor of the FX30 and for my style of shooting to have good stabilization, zoom lever, 4:2:2...it's great, but I wouldn't want to crash in lowlight. Currently I do the events with the A7III and I am delighted with the quality of the images. I've seen a lot of reviews about the FX30, but when they talk about poor performance in lowlight, they always compare it to FX3, A7SIII, A7IV... and I don't think it's a fair comparison. The lenses I use are usually the Sony 18-105 f4 and if needed I could use the Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS, Tamron 18-35 f1.8 or in FF the Tamron 28-75 2.8 I also have an old FS5 and it would be great to be able to put the FX30 head to head Sorry for my English, I write from Barcelona, Spain Thank you
What about the screen? No RUclipsr speak about the changes on the monitor. Actually the siii, iv, fx3 had only 1.44mil dots. The fx30 have 2.5mil dots. No noticeable difference?
What I think will be interesting is when Atomos enables the Ninja V+ to record the RAW data from the FX30. I'm thinking and hoping, that we'll get a 6k ProRes RAW file out of that combo. Fingers crossed. What do you think? Great content, by the way, congrats!
If I got an fx30 as a third cam for a wide shot on a podcast recording (I use a three cam setup)am I correct in thinking it would match the fx3 at the same iso of 800 if all cameras set to s cinetone? The FX3s will be on singles with the fx30 as a wide two shot. Thank you
Jason, watching now, however can you tell me what you use for a top down camera. I noticed that when you picked up the FX30 there was no focus hunting. I can't remember which FX line camera has an issue but I do know that the a6400 has that issue as well. I am looking to get a Sony that I don't have to always use in manual focus for top downs.
Personally, I liked the film footage in a comparison of the FX30 to the A7 IV. These of the A7IV tn low light were sharper! the backlit model was sharper again with the FX30 Thanks for showing a good example of the difference between the rolling shutter performance between the fx30, fx6 and a7iv!
Does the dual native iso works without s-log, s-cinetone or any other Picture Profile? I don't really use these flat picture styles but the low light capabilities would be nice.

Thanks Jason- Would you say for mostly outdoor run and gun shooting is it worth getting over the fx3 considering the price point? Questioning whether I really need the full frame in fx3.
do you think we need full frame lens for FX30, or It is a waste and a APS-C lens should be enough? I used to take videos with action camera like gopro for years and thinking of moving forward to some more professional cameras, thanks for anwswering.
Hi Jason. The FX30 is very tempting. One aspect that I am cautious about is mixing APS-C gear with Full frame. What are the issues? Do you use your full frame lenses, or get specific APS-C - hence increasing your investment in glass. I do have a couple of old A mount APS-Cs which could geta new lease of life - though I doubt the auto focus is anywhere near as good as my current full frame lenses for my FX6 ad A7 iv.
I used all full frame glass as I do not have any high performing APS-C glass. Works extremely well. Just have to take note of the field of view difference with lenses and depth of field will not be the same when composing your full frame shots compared to APS-C shots
Still struggling to know if I should get the a7iii or fx30 for the extra quality. They both shoot at 120fps but I am making a huge switch to Sony from Canon. Canon simply just cant touch Sony right now. Its a big decision and I don't want to make the wrong one.
Hi Jason, I am looking to order one, but before I would like to know more about 1080p. could you make a comparison in 1080p with sony A7Siii and sony a7iv. Appreciate!
The Rolling shutter a7 IV is much better with Aps-c mode. knowing that the fx30 is an aps-c camera, you should have compared the aps-c mode of the A7 IV.
Hi Jason, I'm thinking of upgrading my A7iii for video. I'm considering the A7iv, Fx 30 or zve-1, but I can't figure out what would be the best choise? I shoot a bit of everything. I like to make nature videos / vlogs and some talking head videos in my studio. Thank you for the informative video.
"If you are whipping your camera side to side, you are an idiot" - that! Funny how most YT'ers demonstrate rolling shutter by, exactly, whipping the damn camera from side to side and risk getting the damn camera a whiplash 🤣 Honest and real take on this whole debacle of the rolling shutter like it is a damnation 😁
I can't imagine any aps-c sensor would be better than any full frame sensor for lowlight. So I'll go out on a limb and say, Definitely not. But the dynamic range of the fx30 I'm sure will make it a good enough contender if I also had to guess. Same with the panasonic gh6. It's micro 4/3 sensor is Itty bitty, but it apparently has some incredibly impressive dynamic range abilities. That being said it still will never compete with larger sensors no matter how many technological tricks they implement
It is close. The a7iii is still really good in low light. The advantage is the FX30 has 10bit color so grading footage will objectively look better with colors
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks for your answer ! I think keeping the A7III for photo, but switching with the FX30 for video. 14:52 "it's definitely much better than a7iv" - not necessarily. a7iv in crop apsc mode has 13ms rolling, whereas fx30 (it's a crop apsc) has 15+ms. it's better than a7iv's full frame mode, yes, but not its apsc.
I am actually really glad on your stance with rolling shutter. The one time it feels relevant to me is handheld footage just recording my family, but that is with me chasing my kids. In the jobs I've had, we plan our shots and use a gimbal for smooth movement. It's actually a "problem" I tend to forget.
GOOD VIDEO, thank you! Well, maybe you can help us. Apart from recording our trips we also record events and videos for clients. We have an A7III and we need a new camera, we rarely take photos, so this Fx30 would be good for us, but sometimes we shoot a lot at night (events) then we think of the Sony A7IV. On our travels we want to slow motion at 120. We are torn between the A7IV and this Fx30 for the above reasons, any advice? 😅
That’s a hybrid camera though. And might only have 1 SD card slot so less safe to use on important shoots. It could work if you record to a monitor too, but remember the FX-30 also has a fan and other cinema features. Let’s see what Sony comes out with.
I can't see any difference nor any noise... Are all these cameras too good or youtube reduces noise or what the hell is happening? I have my trusty fs100 and at 6400 ISO it looks like a VCR on shadows and mostly dark reds.

Awesome video man, I was actually going to pick up an FX3 today… should I wait? Lol I already have the A7iv and LOVE the video quality but wanted a dedicated video camera.
You can load Phantom LUTS into the FX3 and shoot in S-LOG3 with the LUTS applied and burned in to the recorded video. No color-grading afterward, with DR and image quality (other than low-light and shallow-end DOF) that blow away any non-color-graded output from the a7iv.
It seems like this fx30 is going to make a pretty big splash on the camera industry? So I'm guessing you'd be pretty stoked to own it. Personally, I'd rather have the panasonic s5. Better image/ibis and lowlight. Is a proper cinema camera and is actually smaller than the fx30. Go figure lol
@@aliendroneservices6621 ya obviously the auto focus isn't great on the Panasonic. But everything else is more than likely superior. And to be fair, if we're talking cinema cameras, there's always a focus puller right? Nowadays it's super easy to set up a small focus puller on any camera with not much added bulk even. If we're talking sports or vlogging, then yes, get a sony or any other competent brand lol. Personally I love the look of manual focus if I'm shooting a "film". People put way too much weight into insane autofocus these days and not enough into the actual image quality and the fundamentals of shooting film/proper video. I'll easily and happily give up insane auto focus for better lowlight and great ibis and a nicer picture any day of the week. Especially for cheaper
@@akyerit Does IBIS matter if you're using a gimbal or Catalyst Browse? Can you load LUTS into an S5 and have them burned in to the output so no color-grading is needed?
Jason... I'm torn between the FX30 and the 7A4. I was waiting for the perfect APSC camera to do a lot of gimbal work with the 18-105 mm internal zoom lens but I feel that the a74 provides the best of both worlds by allowing to shoot full frame when needed with other lenses. I, however, plan on shooting 90% of my stuff in 4K 60... Any advice?
If you're going to shoot 4k60p the majority of the time then the fx30 will probably be better suited as it will likely not overheat due to its active cooling fan, plus I would bet the fx30 performs a little better than the a7iv in crop mode. You could use a speedbooster if you want more of FF look. Personally, I'm keeping my a7iv with my a7siii. No plans to buy an fx30 for now
Hey Jason, what do you think of the internet comments on the FX30 about the increased noise compared to the A7iv, did you find the FX30 has a noise issue?
As none of the three cameras fx30, fx6 and a7iv have a stacked sensor it all comes down to the processing speeds of the Imaging xr processor for rolling shutter performance. This is my theory and I can be wrong. as a7siii, a7iv and fx30 all sport the exact same imaging xr processor it has the readout according to the megapixels. therefore you have 26ms readout on a7iv, 8.7ms on a7siii and fx30 will be in the middle with approximately 15ms as XR processor is processing 33mp, 12mp and 20.1mp respectively.
Ya im guessing you'll get way more out of this fx30 for video. Just know that it's a good deal chunkier/thicker than the a7c. Exact same size as the fx30 if you've ever had a chance to handle it
@@akyerit the FX3 is my main camera so should be a good fit size wise. But looking forward to having 4k 50p on my B-Cam and having the same 10bit codex for 2 cam interviews :) fingers crossed the colours are similar to the FX3, the A7C was well different and really annoying to match.

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema does it have the same fan system as the fx3? That and the tally lights were the biggest advantages over the a7siii, IMO.
I liked the 'look' of the FX30 over the FX6, it seems like the cinema cameras like FX6 record the image without enhancing it while the FX30 processes the image more. The FX6 image leaves it for you to enhance with lighting, or in post with color grading, etc.
FX6 does some amazing things
Im excited that this camera gives you so many pro features and you could get 2 bodies, a standard zoom and 3 sigma primes for less than the fx6. With the audio handle and all the sd cards, batteries and other grip you need. Unreal!
incredible camera for the price
Idea: what if we treat the a7iv as a apsc mode only camera and then compare it to the fx30?
Also, failed the watermark test - Took a picture where the last letters are almost unreadable and noticed the phone "enhanced" them to the point of being easy to read in the picture.
yes
Its ridiculous to me that cameras like the a7iv don’t have internal LUTs or shutter angle or some of the other cine features. Its a hybrid…which means it SHOULD have both…cine features and photo features… there’s NO excuse for them not having them when it’s primarily software/firmware.
Any camera that has picture profiles should be able to load LUTs internally.
Shutter angle really shouldn’t be that hard to put in any camera that can do video… since it’s essentially just a setting like “auto ISO” etc.
It comes down to marketing and how Sony want to hold back certain features and try sell other cameras based on those extra features.
the photo feature & Quality same as sony a6000 series?
I have a question? If one is to use CINE EI and baking in a lut. Compare using flexible ISO and then applying a lut in post. will it then have equal quality or will it be worse?
So the 2nd base iso is 2500 for the Sony a7iv? I thought it was 800 - 3200
You must have misheard me. FX30 second base is 2500. Yes A7IV second base is 3200 so the FX30 should perform better but the A7IV does very slightly

can anyone explain to me what you was talking about when he doesnt use ISO. he leaves it at 800 uses Cine mode .. or something like that ?
In s-log 3 or CineEI mode the base ISO level is 800 which naturally gives you the best dynamics range and image quality performance with low signal to noise ratio. Essentially using ISO higher with introduce more noise to the image due to increasing the sensitivity of the sensor

Question is, I'm doing tons of vlogs about our trips to the mountains to do astrophotography, and honestly, we've been filming with the a7III and it's been great, but, obviously, it could be better.
We use no lighting, everything is as it is, and that's when we started to think. An a7sIII.... but some people recommended us the FX30. Is it really that good?

This video solidifies the high quality that can be found in the FX30. In all of the tests you showed, the FX30 footage remained completely useable. The low light performance was quite impressive even with its smaller sensor. I have the A7iv and it's quite impressive on its own. Should I trade my A7iv in for the FX30? It is something I am considering. I am a low budget filmmaker, so it is something I am looking into.

The lenses I use are usually the Sony 18-105 f4 and if needed I could use the Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS, Tamron 18-35 f1.8 or in FF the Tamron 28-75 2.8
I also have an old FS5 and it would be great to be able to put the FX30 head to head
Sorry for my English, I write from Barcelona, Spain

Any legit tips for when im in a lowlight situation where i cant get the multimeter to even be .3 of a stop overexposed even with added in lights?
Yikes. Maybe stronger lights or a faster lens
How well do you think you can colour match A7IV and FX30?
What about the screen? No RUclipsr speak about the changes on the monitor. Actually the siii, iv, fx3 had only 1.44mil dots. The fx30 have 2.5mil dots. No noticeable difference?
Thanks for Rolling sutter suggestion
What I think will be interesting is when Atomos enables the Ninja V+ to record the RAW data from the FX30. I'm thinking and hoping, that we'll get a 6k ProRes RAW file out of that combo. Fingers crossed. What do you think? Great content, by the way, congrats!
They can currently do 4.7k RAW external up to 59.94fps
This is the sony A7IV with all top downs

Thanks Jason- Would you say for mostly outdoor run and gun shooting is it worth getting over the fx3 considering the price point? Questioning whether I really need the full frame in fx3.
Do the ISO's match in terms of actual brightness? Sometmes the ISO's don't match from camera to camera.
How are you comparing the FX6 at 2500 iso when its natives are 800 and 12800?
Do you know if external flash work with it?
Might be problematic because the FX30 doesn't have a mechanical shutter. Flash is disabled on my A7 IV when the silent mode is engaged.
I wouldn't recommend the FX30 for flash photography
do you think we need full frame lens for FX30, or It is a waste and a APS-C lens should be enough? I used to take videos with action camera like gopro for years and thinking of moving forward to some more professional cameras, thanks for anwswering.
There's no point run buying full frame lenses for the FX30 unless you have a full frame camera...
What Len best for it
How does the A7IV compare in APS-C mode?
And for Sports Videography
Hi Jason, I am looking to order one, but before I would like to know more about 1080p. could you make a comparison in 1080p with sony A7Siii and sony a7iv. Appreciate!
In my next video I do a very small amount of 1080p footage. In well exposed shots it look fantastic. Plus you have 240fps in 1080p

Good Video, thanks ! Is the FX30 is better in low light than A7III (not S, just A7iii) ? Thanks :)

14:52 "it's definitely much better than a7iv" - not necessarily. a7iv in crop apsc mode has 13ms rolling, whereas fx30 (it's a crop apsc) has 15+ms. it's better than a7iv's full frame mode, yes, but not its apsc.
Hi, Jason! Please, make a video about audio devices for shooting. Recorders, radio and Wi-Fi systems, etc.
I am actually really glad on your stance with rolling shutter. The one time it feels relevant to me is handheld footage just recording my family, but that is with me chasing my kids. In the jobs I've had, we plan our shots and use a gimbal for smooth movement. It's actually a "problem" I tend to forget.

If we're talking sports or vlogging, then yes, get a sony or any other competent brand lol. Personally I love the look of manual focus if I'm shooting a "film". If you're going to shoot 4k60p the majority of the time then the fx30 will probably be better suited as it will likely not overheat due to its active cooling fan, plus I would bet the fx30 performs a little better than the a7iv in crop mode. You could use a speedbooster if you want more of FF look.

Hey Jason, what do you think of the internet comments on the FX30 about the increased noise compared to the A7iv, did you find the FX30 has a noise issue?
Absolutely not. No noise issue. We are spoilt with such great cameras. Amazing performance specially for the price
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema thanks Jason. Also would you choose the FX30 over the XH2S? I’m torn between them.
As none of the three cameras fx30, fx6 and a7iv have a stacked sensor it all comes down to the processing speeds of the Imaging xr processor for rolling shutter performance. This is my theory and I can be wrong. as a7siii, a7iv and fx30 all sport the exact same imaging xr processor it has the readout according to the megapixels. therefore you have 26ms readout on a7iv, 8.7ms on a7siii and fx30 will be in the middle with approximately 15ms as XR processor is processing 33mp, 12mp and 20.1mp respectively.
maybe. I don't know haha. That is what I assumed
