  • With 33 locations in India and 72 across the world, this Saravana Bhawan has set the benchmark for India’s culinary offerings. But hidden inside Saravana Bhawan’s dosa isn’t just a delicious potato mix, but a mysterious ingredient that took years to unfurl. An ingredient that had captured the state of Tamil Nadu, jolting its capital city of Chennai to a halt. That secret ingredient was murder. This is the story of the man who built a dosa empire that feeds millions across the world, and his ultimate downfall. This is the story of the Deadly Dosa King, P. Rajagopal.

      Well, the narrative was
      Excellent and astonishing flawless English.
      I have an unbelievable
      Story for you.
Rajagopal was known to me very well. I was an airline Captain, living in kknagar. He comes to my house to deliver the grocery and in 1988,once he came to collect his money. I came out from bathroom offered a seat in my new Sofa. He said that his doti is dirty and doesn't want to dirty the sofa...!!
I paid him. With a smile.
Suddenly he vanished after 6 months. Sold his shop. Years rolled by.
      I was a very senior
Boeing captain earning 3 lacs a month as an Indian Airlines captain, who was comming comming down, the staircase of kk nagar saravanabhavan, when Rajagopal' S salary in business was 3000 crores an year. Rajagopal was climbing up with his managers. He never recognised me, and I don't want to embarrass him with my conversation, reminding his very humble past.
I was full of hatred for this animal , and years ago he was given double life sentences, in high court. One totally wrong information in your narration was, he never spent a single day in jail.
He spent few days in police custody, and the police loved him, for they had a full lottery ticket.... That is Rajagopal....!!.
Even the constables were presented with 2n hand ambassador cars.....!!!
To them he was the most lucky charm....
It is unfortunate that the day he got double life imprisonment, he got bail with the same lady judge.......and 14 years after that ,came Supreme
Court hearing, and in no part of the world justice
      Delayed this extent...
      Capt. Bharathi.
      6380865208.
If I tell to my friends , they don't even believe my story......!!!!

"The next time you sit at a Saravana Bhavan restaurant to eat a Dosai, don't forget the blood, sweat and tears that went into making it"- that was a profound ending.
Yup, I don't think I can relish a meal at a Saravan Bhavan Restaurant after hearing that story.

I can relate to this. One of my then colleagues, a doctor from Malar hospital in Chennai, who was staying with uncle during weekend was attacked by a group of men in the middle of a night in his sleep. He was alone in the house. During the process they were calling him by a wrong name. He screamed and said I am not “….”, I am “so and so”. They said “ sorry, mistaken identity”. I remember he had told the police the name Daniel, and that they were sent by Saravana owner, looking for his uncle who was working for Saravana Bhawan. This would have been between 1998- 2000.

The downfall of Saravana Bhavan is really heartbreaking, there was one near my home, my family would often go there. It was one of the branches that faced the axe after Rajagopalan's death. There was another Saravana Bhavan located in Usman Road (a shopping hub in Chennai; started to cater to the shoppers); there was also a party hall behind the restaurant. The front restaurant is now owned by another great chain of South Indian restaurants, Murugan Idli Shop, and the party hall has now been converted into the Saravana Bhavan branch. I also remember going to the Saravana Bhavan in Muscat when I was living there, it was a 2 floor establishment, and it gave so much joy to see a South Indian restaurant at a foreign country. The K.K. Nagar branch continues to function at the same place. To be honest, my family no longer goes to Saravana Bhavan, the quality has degraded, it no longer tastes like before. Such an heartbreaking end for such great restaurants.

Then I requested my Venkateshwara Temple priest friend (Tirupati background) in Livermore, CA, to make me one, and his answer was that he could not make them because of the lack of certain ingredients. Nice story and Saravana Bhawan Dosas are the best and I love their chutneys.I lived in Delhi and visted the one in CP and not far from there is another outlet in Barakhamba Road.Sad to know that person being prayed the most preyed the upon the life of someone just on the pretext of the soothsayers prediction. Please host the show by yourself, it will do better.

There’s a Sarvana Bhavan in Dallas, Texas too. The guy had so much going for him and chose to be a jerk as his power grew. Kinda sad. Had everything, yet nothing at all. He grew his business but not his love for family.

Hey guys! Have been a avid listener of yours for about 1.5 years.. I always look forward to your videos.. so glad you two are back strong 😃
And this case is so infamous in Chennai that, me and my family have been such regulars in Saravanan Bhavan.. and so were so many people.. they popularised South Indian food to an unimaginable extent.. this one incident just made a huge dip in their reliability and ever since that, we can never get ourselves to trust this brand.. so glad you are covering it..

Please civer the story where a 10 yr old girl in Pondicherry was gang rapped, murdered her and thrown her into the sewage. It was a heated issue in Tamilnadu right now.

Imagine that after the murder was committed and Rajgopal was accused he still ran his business from or outside the prison. He had the best lawyers who kept him out of jail. He had money for that. And that money was indirectly paid by hundreds of thousands of sarva bhavan's customers. Many of them might be even knowing that he was a murder accused. Indirectly people helped him stay out of jail. Ironical.

Hi. I have a suggestion for a video. The biggest of it's kind at the time, it shook Bangladesh at it's core. The infamous SA and murder of Shaznin Rahman, the teenage daughter of one of the country's leading businessman Latifur Rahman. Tragedy struck this family a second time when Faraz Hossain, hls grandson was also killed in a terrorist attack in 2016. I am still fascinated by this family and the terrible misfortune they suffered.

Excellent story telling. The lady asked the right questions to make it more interesting & her expressions were great. The only thing I didn't like was the conclusion, people should not be reminded about Rajagopal's sweat when they visit Saravana Bhavan but of the injustice meted out to Shanta kumar and Jyothi. Also, not to allow success going to the head.
