  • This is the story of the man who created India’s first crime show: every week he was on television screens around the nation narrating the exploits of the most devious criminals of the time, until January 10, 2000, when he found himself at the center of a criminal investigation. The difference was, he was no longer researching or hosting this case, but instead living it - in the eyes of the police, the man that covers murder for a living, had just covered up the murder of his own wife. This is the story of how the host of India’s Most Wanted, became one of the most Wanted Men in india. This is the story of Suhaib Ilyasi.

As per my opinion , you would never say to a person who literally just stabbed you to save you .
Anju went into a fit of rage , stabbed herself, and then, when she became sane, realized that she went too far, henceforth asking her husband to save her.

I was going to write this. Usually people commit suicide when they are not in their stable mental state. But after they commit, they realise the blunder they made because death is not easy.

That makes so much more sense compared to the narrative that someone who attempted to take their own life wouldn't ask to be saved.
      1. She may not have intended it to be as severe as it happened
      2. Most people regret attempting suicide after the fact

It was a mental health crisis case turn to suicide and so clear.I feel so sad that this Man’s dreams were killed by this woman who needed help. These cases like mental diseases are not really shown in Indian justice system and they are taken highly for granted in the western legal system where they often misuse it.
The lady was definitely suffering and neeeded help and this was evidently known by her family her parents and everyone close to her. That’s why there was no shock in their reaction at first to the knowledge that she committed suicide. They knee she was short tempered and may be previously had even attempted this and may b even blackmailed her parents with suicide warning previously.
The fact that she said Ilyas save me also speaks volumes…why would a person who was just stabbed ask to be saved by that same killer? She was in public presence in ambulance she would have wanted to let them know that he killed her and don’t let him go free.
I hope Ilyasi family finds closure and peace.

I was looking through the comments to see if anyone mentioned mental health crisis, I am so glad that you did! As a mental health counselor myself, it appeared Anju suffered from mental health illnesses. Her family acknowledged that she has had intense anger outbursts, which tells me she had trouble regulating her emotions. I am obviously speculating all of this based on the information provided in the video, but my take is she possess some of the cluster B traits, particularly borderline traits. Unfortunately, it is common for individuals with borderline traits to impulsively commit suicide as a way to alleviate their emotional pain or in some cases, even seek attention. An interesting information that I learned as a counselor is that borderline individuals that attempts or commits suicide will often regret what they did as they do truly want to live and made an unfortunate illogical decision based on heightened emotions. I think that is why she may have perhaps said “save me” to her husband towards the end because she truly understood the gravity of her actions and knew that she didn’t want to die but unfortunately had succumbed to her injuries. Unfortunately, the stigma of mental health is still very prevalent in many parts of the world and is not fully understood due to ignorance and lack of education. I truly believed if she got the proper mental health treatment, there is a likely chance she would have been alive today.

This case sounds like a classic case of a broken legal system, misuse of power by the judges, misuse of money and positions by the authorities, doctors, judges and other professionals and last but not the least, gross misuse by the sister and mother of anju ( the fact that they are women and can harass a man into giving up his daughter)
The limited knowledge of the case and the narratives of Anju and her family tells me that short temper, unreasonable behavior is a hereditary issue in their family and I hope that justice prevails!
Thank you for the detailed information on a case that shocked us viewers in the 90s and the 2000s.

I still remember being shocked when I heard that he killed his wife. IMW was a fav show n Suhaib Ilyasi was so good in it... "Together we can and we will make a difference" was his line at the end. I stopped watching the show after he left...perhaps the shock of how looks/impressions deceive a person's true nature. Never really followed up on the case either. Happy to know that he was innocent. Thanks for the episode, you guys.
As an aside, point that didnt make sense: Aliya saying, "We suffered a lot..my brother n my mother". Googled to find out that he remarried in 2006. He also went on to make other shows/serials which were popular.

Great episode! Lots of unanswered questions as to what the motives were. However, my guess is that Anju only went on to say 'save me' because in the last moments she realised her mistake, that was made in her erratic state. As to why she could've done it, I think her standing in her family and maybe in public too, was being diminished because of her "hotheadedness"; implusive nature by her very own family. And let's not forget, she was living under the shadow of her very successful husband who was hosting a show; a show which was set to be her's.

Its hard to believe that the man hosting crime shows becomes a center stage with his mentally ill wife suicide and worse her sister-in-law who further takes no stones turned to make this mans life a living hell for 18 yrs. I am glad that he is free from all the allegations and gets to live the rest of his life, peacefully. The show host is a great narrator and can run the show by himself.

Amazing! I'm still wondering the backstory behind Anju saying she lost to Z. I'm wondering if this had to do anything with she feeling sidelined or jealous by how much time he was giving to his work, his fans etc. It's a shame that none of the lawyers ever tried to explore the reason for their recurrent conflicts. Why did she need a divorce, why did he continue to prioritise his dynamic with Z despite his wife's obvious hesitation. Was he just enjoying his new found fame or he was attracted to him, which in the early 2000s in india was not a good look. I do believe that Shohib could have benefitted from a much stronger legal team.

I’m not an Indian please can someone explain what happened to Z? And why was he mentioned in the podcast? Somehow I thought he killed Shohebs wife.

Its very clear that anju committed suic*de becz of her mental unstability...she wanted divorce before suhaib was successful..nd now after his success she wasn't able to decide what to do...she wanted to divorce him but after his success she would have thought it will be her loss..so she got mentally exhausted n k#lled herself..turning his success in a downfall...she was sick..

i feel like aishwariya was bias towards the wife in this one.. lol suhaib is so very clearly innocent. like its not that shocking that a sister woukd go to such lengths for custody. its actually super common.

    As usual another great podcast
    ...but....
Saying "rewind back' is just as passe as saying "@the rate"😂
Also...a suggestion for Aryaan...when you speak to your co host, you tend to look away from the mic, lowering your voice...though it's audible...it becomes soft !

Anju pleading to Suhaib to save her life doesn’t mean she hadn’t stabbed herself. Most certainly she didn’t just have a hot head, she was probably suffering from some sort of mental disorder, like bipolar or ADHD. In such a case, she would have totally lost her mind and stabbed herself. In the heat of the moment she didn’t feel pain but later when her temper subsided and the pain took over, she realised what she had done, hence, the plea.
But, what about the top she was wearing not having any hole? Why did Suheb not tell the doctor the truth about her injuries? After all, that would have ultimately be revealed, and considering the gravity of the injuries, it was imperative for him to inform the exact cause of wounds. Why was she taken to a nursing home and not straight away to AIIMS? The blood loss must’ve been profuse, anyone who has a deep knowledge of crimes should know that any delay would have been fatal. What about the doubt raised by the second panel of doctors who said that they couldn’t say for certain which stab was first? Even though the third panel made the mistake of not referring to the first autopsy, this question begs an answer!
Good job, you two! I love the way you present the cases objectively and considering both sides of the story in your podcasts. Keep up the great work 👍🏼

This is a clear case of suicide. The lady was mentally unstable n had issues on her high temper, hot headedness, etc. It tells a lot of the lady's nature. Such unstable people always want near n dear ones total attention which is not always posssible at all. And in this case also not possible as her husbhand was very much into making shows n highly busy n she could'nt take it. Its sad her fly did'nt treat her in time and it aggravated to a unstoppable point. Her poor innocent husbhand had to pay the price for her unstable mind. Her sister's behaviour was so uncalled for. For her own selfish reason she was separating a child from her own father. So highly insensitive and selfish her sister was. I am happy justice prevaled although very late.

Super like and thank you for being back. I have two questions, first one is serious and the other one borders on the lines of extreme inquisitivity.
1 What was the gender of Z and how much of a role did Z have in the arguments that happened, considering the build up ?
2 (don't hate me for this) When Aryaan is infront of the camera, everything is fine however when both of you are infront, right infront of those voluminous books is a mysterious looking bottle. Usme kya hai or why is it there ? 🤐

The mother and sister instead of pressing false charges on sohaib should've tried to find out the real reason of anju's suicide, they not only made his life difficult but also made Aaliya's life difficult. Rashmi felt so entitled to snatch Aaliya away from Sohaib that she even was ready to destroy Aaliya's peace.

Wow! I like the way you both narrate the crime story. RUclips is full of hyper energetic and “sansani type” storytellers and they just make such a serious issue a joke with their content. You did a brilliant job with such a good hold on the story as well your english (and the pronunciations) except i found Ashwarya lame and not required here (sorry about that!)
