Love watching your vids and i posted before about being 55 and taking a professional plumbers course up to NVQ level 2, hope I'm not too old, also great to see you was visiting St David's i live in Pembroke if you are down this way again give us a shout would be great to meet the legend and maybe have a pint.

    The washer on an immersion is a fibre washer so if any moisture gets to it it expands and seals it. I agree ptfe on the thread but PASTE NEVER on the washer as it will be rock hard by the time the immersion needs to be undone again and it will not move even with a big pipe!! You love your paste - I have never used it and never had a leak after I have greased the olive!! I've had some immersions in daft places too!!

    • @MJTiffPlumbing
      @MJTiffPlumbing  Год назад +3

      Never had an issue using paste, or removing things that have been pasted. I’ve fitted a few immersions in 27years and all have been fine.
      If you don’t use it someone on the RUclips comments will say you should …. And if you do someone will say you shouldn’t.
      We all do things different, no right or wrong as long as it doesn’t leak….. as that’s plumbing😉

    Nice job in the end mark and good tip about informing the customer that the boss can twist on the tank. I hate doing immersion heaters as 9 times out of 10 they have boss white on the threats and they are stuck meaning plenty of patience and slowly slowly with heat.

      I have just posted my comment about using boss white on the washer. Fibre washers do not need it. It will be rock hard by the time the immersion has to come out. I have NEVER used boss white on any joint. Just grease on an olive and that tightens smoothly every time so no leaks.

    It never ceases to amaze me, why HWC’s are mounted up like that as if it will give better hot water flow when as we know, it’s the height BELOW the CWS tank that gives that plus of course making sure that fill level is 50mm below overflow ie: full enough!🙄

Then the risk of when the bottom one is undone there is still water in the tanks so a big flood! I take it out very gingerly just in case with the vac handy!

    I have watched many of your video and know you are a paste man for all joints but for an immersion you have the fibre washer to seal it in so using paste will make it a nightmare for removal in future. Ptfe acts as a lubricant and a bit of additional sealing.. When its all wired up and switched on I always use a screwdriver against my ear and touch the nut of the immersion so I can hear it is working. Electricity hums!

    OR you could leave it in situ .....drained the tank fully ...............and put a bottom side entry Element in ?
    Problem solved today and in the future. No redecorating costs for the customer.

      Not when there is no low side entry point…. Completely impossible and wouldn’t want to try and fit a side entry element into a 20year old cylinder!!!!
      Problem solved the way I did it and now has a permanent access for the future👌🏼

    If you split the tank taking out old element. Is it covered on your house insurance as accidental damage?

    What a pain in the arse!! Could have been worse though, just imagine if that cupboard had been built with masonry walls 😨
    Say what you will about stud walls, but it’s situations like this that make me thank god for them.
