Just landed on this while trying to figure out what's going on with my "Revmax". I bought my 2015 Ram a couple years ago (used obviously) and paid cash that I saved for years from my VA Disability payments. The guy that sold it to me said it had all this cool performance stuff, deleted, tuned, 6" BDS lift with fox reservoir shocks, and the big one for me: a new "bulletproof revmax" 68rfe with 5k miles on it. So I immediately put it to work and took a job driving from Texas to Ohio to pick up a flatbed trailer with a big tractor on it. Going through Tennessee I started to hear the trans yelping like a dog in the higher gears and the CEL came on. I couldn't just unhook and limp it home and didn't have any money aside from fuel and food funds, so I kept going. The light eventually went away and I didn't have any problems until recently. Now if I get into the throttle much at all, it slips in the higher gears and the light comes back on. I can't afford to replace the transmission because when I took it to a shop the guy said "sorry man, you got screwed, this is a stock trans with a RM pan. It's going to cost 2500 to rebuild." I don't know what to do now. I'm scared to drive it but I have a family of 6 to take care of.
What I find interesting is this transmission started life as the 45rfe/545rfe with relatively few failures. Then was enlarged to the 68RFE. They were ok till Ram turned up the torque to 800-plus. There a light duty transmission with lots of wear points. I work at a dealership p0871 I take the transmission out. The overdrive clutches are failed .
Been in the Automotive business for almost 20 years. You can tell this guy knows his stuff, genuinely cares and takes pride in his work. Good to know there's still people like that in the business..
i bought my first diesel 3 months ago. 2015 3500... came with the p0871 code... after finding and listening to this podcast i am feeling a bit deflated. the code only flashed when i'm a bit harder than 50% throttle pedal, otherwise it doesn't flash the dtc. i also have a u1449 dtc, not sure what that one is pointing to on the transmission side. any ideas?
Great topic to cover. Im currently having problems with my 68rfe. I might get the package Ram should of never quit building far left petal and a Mans - mission.
Dodge has put such shitty transmissions in their diesels for so long that they singlehandedly kept demand going for manuals a full decade after everyone else axed them.
Anyone know anything about next gen drivetrains ? I bought a valve body and haven't ran on it yet Does the color of the plug on the valve body make a difference?
Got a 2008 that does fine until I’m towing my travel trailer on an incline. Torque converter unlocks, dead pedal, HUD says “Service Required See Dealer”, no codes, once on level ground TC locks back up and pulls fine. One other issue is that the trans temp gets hot in stop and go traffic, shifts hard and often goes limp with TCM code. I never use Tow/Haul because hard shifts have caused limp mode in the past. Thinking about just swapping the entire trans for a Revmax, Suncoast, or another “built” trans.
P0871 I have this issue now. That’s the only code I have. I hope that’s the only thing. Thanks for the info. By the way Dealership told me it is $1300 That’s ridiculous. Will look for it at junkyard or could you please recommend a better pricing option.
So your saying po371 code trans is trash? Or is it still in hopes was not driven after it felt like threw itself outta gear was towing a tractor unhooked and drove quarter mile in reverse back to the house
@@seavisionsmines also in the same situation, have you found out what the problem was? im going to be pulling the trans this week coming up but dont wanna tare into it and it be a simple fix. thanks
@that_cummins6.7 Not yet. Still waiting to get the cash together to get it fixed. I have another truck so it is not my only vehicle. Lmk what you find if you get there first. Good luck brother!
Hey guys, other day I was driving and my truck through p0871 code and proceeded to do a lot of funky things after. Was stuck in first, then shifted fine for awhile, then was stuck in 4th for a minute, etc. got it home. How do I determine if it’s just a valve body issue or worse? My mechanic off the cuff things OD clothes are burnt up and we need full rebuild.
We’d recommend giving the guys at RevMax a call. They will be able to go through some things to check with a scan tool and isolating if it’s just the valve body - or more is going on.
My 66RFE acted just like this on 2 tows in a row with the same code. Shut the truck off and let it cool, and it got me there. Reset the codes once I got the trailer unhitched, and it ran fine towing for 2 weeks. I figured out how I can make it do it, just by accelerating up an onramp with a heavy trailer hitched. New valve body and solenoid pack, and I haven't seen it in over a month.
68rfe stage 3 ATS trans with copilot hard down shift at slow speed around 45 in traffic especially in OD this is the 3rd trans the first tork converter failed 2nd metal in trans the trans locked in safety mode and was running extremely hot 3rd trans hard down shift enough where it shakes the truck

I have about 10k on my build and I have p0871 and the 0934 and 0935 codes. Really scary to think it’s already screwed. Just seems like it’s electrical because the way it acts
great podcast !!! I have a question I hope someone can help me with !! I have a 2017 ram limited 6.7 when I am on the gas when it switches to 6 th gear I hear a little chirping noise in the cab !!! Just wondering if it is a serious issue ?????
Any idea why my 68rfe goes from 4th gear to 4th gear TC back to 4th gear to 5th gear to 5th gear TC, back to 5th gear, to 6th gear to 6th gear TC? Is it normal shift pattern ?
Man I'm pretty sure the bolts that hold the solenoid in place come through from the other side of the valve body. The whole thing comes off in one piece.
Didn't actually talk about the issues of the transmission. Talked about some transmission codes, but then just talked about shops not being reputable or wannabe builders. Pretty disappointed on this one.
Carl Jones Revmax talked about ordering from them or competitors on the show, who have invested time and money into their 68RFE product lines. You’d be surprised, we get a lot of questions from truck owners who didn’t know better, paid thousands to have one built with different parts, and can’t find help to fix it. That’s what RevMax was addressing.
The Diesel Podcast And it took the entire podcast to do that? It was just one long infomercial. Didn’t hear one fix discussed(other than buying a RevMax).
Carl Jones Sure there were, they went through common codes, what is a major issue, what isn’t, when a valve body can fix the problem, when it can’t, clutch volume indexes and other things. If your 68 is having a particular issue, let us know we have another 68RFE episode coming up this week. We will ask the guest.
We disagree. We know they have respect for other companies and people that are meticulous with their builds, quality control, etc. But, there’s a lot of places that want a quick buck from selling a $5000+ transmission. They see the cores come in from those quick builds for profit.
If you are contemplating buying a 2500 with a 68rfe mine has burned up at 68k towing 4k in landscape tools. Got it fixed thru dealer under warranty and 4k miles later its now stuck in 4th gear. Do not buy one, run as fast you can.
That sucks. Mine has a revmax valve body and converter and has held up for 2 years with an s465 and 60% over injectors with supporting mods and I don't drive it easy.

Cheapest option would be to buy a used trans from someone parting a truck out and swap it or have it swapped

Well, the video says a valve body will help that code

My 2017 Cummins threw a po868 code at 95,000 miles. My monitor says it's low line pressure??? I listened to the whole podcast what should I do?
same
What about all the fire issues with the 68RFE? Is this a deal breaker to purchase a Rebel HD 2500 ton?
The problem is most guys can't drop 10k for Revmax trans
2:38 Rofl... what code is the one for "you're going need to get a whole new transmission"? 🤣

Im Really curious to see what the new 10speeds can do!
There’s no 10 speed coming for Ram
Hey I’m in Minnesota and I’m looking for a 2010-2016 6.7 cummins that’s mostly rust free and not deleted
Drizzy K trucks in the SW tend to be rust free. We’d suggest checking out some dealers or private seller ads in California, Arizona or Nevada.
The Diesel Podcast thanks!
Rebuilt entire transmission with rev max stage 4 kit, valve body, torque converter, etc...went to do a relearn and truck stalls out no codes
So my 2011 Ram 6.7l with a 68RFE started downshifting erratically from (2nd to 1st gear) what could it be?
Where is the information where I can buy an upgraded 68rfe for a 2014?
Send us an email and we’d be happy to connect you. Our email is - info@thedieselpodcast.com
Awesome podcast. Great interview. Keep it up!
So your saying po371 code trans is trash? Or is it still in hopes was not driven after it felt like threw itself outta gear was towing a tractor unhooked and drove quarter mile in reverse back to the house
68rfe stopped pulling in forward or reverse , what causes that, the filter is on and not split , no trash in pan
Same here. Every find out what happened?

How much power can a 68rfe handle with just a valve body upgrade and a tune?
So my 2014 ram 3500 68rfe is stuck in 4th gear. Has anyone had the same thing happen?
