Hiram...As a former Vo-tech Automotive instructor for my local school district, I am really surprised you don't have over a million subscribers. I think you need guys like myself to start promoting your videos on FB, Instagram, etc. You deserve the subs, views and thumbs up...you are the best transmission instructor I've seen on RUclips and one of the most informative How-To video creators on RUclips period.
Hiram - it is great to see you back posting new repair videos. I was so worried that your shop may have been destroyed by the flooding last year in your area. If you or your shop were affected, then I hope you have recovered and business is getting back to normal.
Good to see you back again. I have been a mechanic for years, but always avoided transmissions. Until I got a job at a trans shop wanting to just do a little of their side mechanic work on a semi retired basis. Their 'builder' was awful, 50% or worse come back rate. Figured I couldn't do any worse than that. Now less than 2 years later I am the builder and he's gone. My come back rate is well under 5%, and of those its more likely to be an installer error than my failure. Still a fairly stressful situation. Your videos have helped me tremendously, especially in the first year, but still serve as educational tool/reference and will likely continue to. Thank You.
Little late to the party, but kind of in a similar boat. I’ve built many a manual transmission as a hobbyist, and always avoided automatics. People regularly asked if I also rebuilt them. Told them I didn’t because there was always something so mystifying about them. Watched a handful of videos such as this and they don’t look any more intimidating than a stick shift. Contemplating dipping my toe into the automatic waters now.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. VERY in depth and if I did try and rebuild my 68RFE, I think with your videos it's doable since I am pretty mechanically inclined.
Good morning Hiram! It's good to see you back! My name is Daniel, I'm from Brazil. Theobald of mechanics Teomave told me about you. Since then I have been following your channel and learning a lot from you! I'm starting to work with automatic transmission. Teobaldo has helped me a lot. First of all, thank God! Thank you, too, for teaching us so much. Thank you and congratulations for the work!
Wow... Hiram, I am HOOKED on your videos! I need to rebuild my 47re and your videos are helping me understand the internals of the Mopar based transmissions! Thank you for taking the time to make your videos!!!
I appreciate the time you took to make these videos. I plan on buying an old core and building it up myself and putting it on the shelf in case I need it. Your video and the manual will definitely help me achieve my goal.
Muchas gracias por toda la información , con su vídeo e información arme con éxito mi 68rfe y quedo impecable, le agradezco su aporte y su generosidad. Saludos desde Chile Víctor
I'm a transmission builder too. Been doing it for 30 yrs or more. My snap ring pliers are always wore out. Snap-on replaced my pair for the one inside the input drum but I don't like the new style handles. My hands are too small to get a grip on them. I want a new pair like the old style. Great job on showing everyone else. Thanks
Sonnax makes several parts for the 68RFE to help them live at higher than stock horsepower levels such as the overdrive clutch housing kit you mentioned. Thought I would mention that in case someone who is new to the 68RFE is watching and planning on doing their own rebuild as I am. I've got a 2008 Dodge 2500 with the 68RFE so I bought a core 68RFE that I'm planning to rebuild and then replace the current transmission before I add anything to increase the power output of the engine. I'm not aiming at anything insane for power however I do plan on adding compounds which should increase low end torque as well so planning ahead with the transmission.
Maestro Hiram!
I'm currently in an automatic transmissions class and just discovered your channel this weekend. I was sad to see it had been a year since the last video but I hit subscribe anyway and BAM you put out a new video. Good stuff.
Yay!! Orale!! ¿¡Que tal hombre?! So glad to see a new video out! I truly hope all is well with you!! I had to comment even before watching the video... lol I did a double take and didn't believe it! 😉🤗
Recently bought a dodge 2500 with cummins but chose to go with a standard trans simply because I had heard so much bad stuff on the autos. Interested in this video because friend has a newer dodge with auto no trouble yet but no controller but he does pull heavy stock trailers. good stuff Hiram
Great video! Thanks for sharing, very informative. My question is what’s the cost to rebuild one of these 68rfe’s with all new parts? I own a 2014 ram 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi.
The overdrive frictions burning are mostly from people towing without using tow haul. Those frictions and steels just can’t take that weight in those overdriven ratios unlike the 4 speeds. Every 68 I build I put a pump, converter, and overrunning clutch in as well. I really recommend using mopar kits, a lot of remanufactured transmissions I put in for 3rd party warranty companies come back. That snap ring in the input drum is a real SOB hahaa. Did you replace the cooler too?
Love your videos! Anyone ever put 66RFE guts in their existing 65RFE case with the 65's valvebody, solenoid pack, and electronics? What if you added the Sonnax 65rfe Smart-Tech® Overdrive Clutch Housing Kit and upped line pressure with the 66's planetaries?
I bought a 2008 ram 6 years ago. Had 146000 miles. I flushed the pan and did the filters. I always use the tow haul button when pulling my trailer. Im now at 250000 miles going strong knock on wood. I just did my first successful transmission rebuild on a 4l60e. Just curious how much more difficult this one is?
Every single 66rfe and 68rfe i have ever torn down has that snap ring sitting near those seals in that exact position, i always install them with the snap ring not showing in that opening but i have never had one that doesn’t sit like that when I’ve opened it up…weird
Thanks for the videos brother. For us new DIY can you point out what car the transmission you're working on belongs to? For example I have a mazda 3 2010 manual 2.0L and don't know the name of my transmission but would love to be able to search for one of your videos that have possibly completed work on that already.
Hi! I rebuild my 68 rfe transmission thanks to your videos! There was one problem, when you turn on D for 2-4 seconds, nothing happens and only after a pause is turned on
Always great videos. thanks. I am going to be putting in a reman'ed Mopar pump in my 545RFE when I change the torque converter. I am getting the Sonnax 44912-01 TCC Accumulator spring to replace the one that comes in the reman'ed pump (Sonnax is supposedly made of "upgraded material increases spring strength" and rated for more duty cycles). My question comes in since I am also installing the TransGo 45RFE-HD2 Reprogramming Shift Kit and it comes with a spring set to go in the same TCC Accumulator. Should I just install the Sonnax 44912-01 instead of the TransGo springs there? Also, the TransGo kit comes with their own TCC Limit Valve parts (ball, spring, plunger). Seeing as this is a reman'ed pump, should i install those or leave them out? (thought i heard those were for the older pumps, but i am not sure). Thanks for any help.
Question. Replaced my stock torque with a Goerend triple disc torque. Also did filters and deep sump pan. Ever since then I have a delayed downshift only 5-4 when coming to a stop. If in TOW/HAUL mode I have no problems. Otherwise shifts fine. Could it be a piece of debree in the valve body? Or just worn out? 350,000 kms.

Picked up a truck with a 68 RFE that will not shift into reverse or park. The front drive shaft and transfer case went. Smacked the rear output sensor into the trans. Took off the extension housing and found plastic in the back. Cleaned it out but still will not shift into reverse or park. Any ideas? No trans experience. Thanks.
Hello, I was wondering if the 68rfe planetary will work in my 545rfe case. I believe they have different trust washers and the 68rfe doesn't have a bearing # 7. Any information would be greatly apricated.
what would you recommend to beef up the 68rfe, behind a 6.7 cummings, on a truck thats been tuned and deleted? the main reason for the tune and delete wasnt to add HP but ive found myself really enjoying it occasionally and would like the option without feeling like im smoking my tranny. any and all information would be helpful, no matter of how invasive it might be. ive already had a code on the tranny that my local mechanic cant figure out and since the tune, ive been concerned.
THE MAN IS BACK IN TOWN. Love it. You've been missed Hiram thank's for getting back into the game. I appreciate it.

Great info about the 68rfe/ 48rfe! Got me educated well> Point was due to this f... loud music I just got half the info.🙃
Awesome video! Do I have to replace the thrust bearings if I'm replacing the friction discs?
Good to see you back Hiram. \o/
Haven't done that.
On 66RFE I get the kit from the dealer.
I don't know anyone yet making the frictions and steels for the overdrive clutch.
Pretty good video. Thanks for making this. 👌
This was awesome!
Finally back! Great to see it!
Glad you are back! 😀
It's nice to see you're back!

Question for you Hiram. My the tapered snap ring on my 68rfe is loose in the case. Will not shift into 4th. Is this a broken case ?

I always replace the valve body on the 68rfe.
Yay!
Alright. Lemme grab my pen. Time for some learning. It's been awhile.
Hiram ! Please help ! Is 68rfe of 2018 will fit to 2013 truck? 2013 truck has an older 2012 transmission
Is there any significant difference?
I was wondering after a rebuild of a 68rfe or 66 rfe do they need to be flashed befor driving

Nice to see you back could you do a rebuild on a powerglide
Would the same technique apply to a 65RFE?
Where is your shop. I need a full rebuild on my 68rfe. EarlHankins I'm in Houston
Hi! Is any chance to bring a transmission to your shop?
If u have it out and u spin the input shaft should the output shaft spin when in gear
I need to repair a 2008 68RFE transmission, what is the location of the workshop?
i’m just wondering why your dewalt impact is red
Video de ensamble de bomba de aceite 45RFE??
Good afternoon, where’s your shop located?
545 RFE is a giant pile of dog do do, it would immediately fail if you get it within 10 feet of an SRT 10 lol.
Where are you located in Houston, Texas? I want to get my 68rfe rebuilt by you.
Thanks
Send the email from a regular browser or computer, I got a lot of gibberish. Couldn't read and can't respond through there.
WOW long time no see
What’s the cost for the whole job and parts?
Man! RUclips was fortnite without you:)
What is the charge for rebuild? I have a same transmission out of my truck
