Hey David, really enjoyed following your 68 build, comparing it to the 45RFE I just did up out in my shop. I have a spare OD hub from an input drum teardown, and it is very useful for setting the "under construction" input drum's input shaft... up onto, while messing with it, instead of just balancing it on its nose.
Also, not to sound like a smart ass, I use my spare input drum reverse hub to stick down into the (45's ) 4-2 structure, aka "center support", to rotate the drive line carrier to get an easy engagement, so that the "center support" drops right in.
Also, "not to sound like a smart ass", I wipe the 3-3-2-2 transmission case slots with lube so that the "center support" fingers will drop in easier, instead of gouging in. One more thing, the BMF tapered snap ring that retains the "center support" aka 4-2 housing, I wipe the inside area of the case with lube bush, so that the dang BMF tapered snap ring doesn't chisel off (shave) the interior of the case, sliding, instead, on the grease, as the SN goes down to its slot.

That was super helpful. I wish you did the oil pump/valve body video too! Seems like all the clutches wearing is usually a symptom of either of those going bad, leaking, reducing pressures and thereby smoking the internals. I just did this job and the assembly was super easy. The piston install was almost the death of me.

Fantastic content! I’ve got a nightmare 66rfe in my 2500 that’s got a number of issues you touched on. Third shop is currently working on it after the first couple failed to fix it. P0871 that prompted 4 solenoid pack replacements, a rebuild, more burnt clutches and some new codes, a second rebuild, and a valve body. Thanks for a video that helps me see and understand!!

Could you show disassembling a drum, cleanning it, installing seals/pistons & reassembling it on a video. Not necessarily this trans but on one that you build.

David I enjoy watching your videos. Short of sonnax input/ output shaft a drum what do you recommend for 4l60e's for a stout one as for clutches and paper rubber. I see these blue an orange bonded pistons

Check rear drum front bushing. If you installed a new set of bushings they have to be below surface flush otherwise the bearing tanks on the back of the output shaft bearing will bind in the face of the drum.

Do you offer a built 68RFE for sale or would I have to send you mine? I haven't liked it from when my truck was brand new and even after putting a Revmax valve body in it. I tow, not that often, but when I do it's heavy, about 16k to 18k. It doesn't slip just shifts weird and tries to find the gears and it builds up torque at a low speed, let off and clunk lol. It actually shifts better when towing. Thanks
