"We will miss you too," Gordon said, "I'm sorry for treating you like a museum piece." "Us too." James and Henry added. Thomas looked around and saw everyone was down. He then took a breath and said, "Edward. No matter where you are or what you're doing, you'll always be welcomed here at Tidmouth Sheds." They all looked at Thomas. For me its either a King or the Captain of the Titanic. However there is also an engine named King Edward that was preserved I belived its a GWR Tender Engine though I don't know the class name?
Edward is cool, I'm sure you've seen it already, but Tuggster explained why Edward is his favorite character and I have new respect for that engine aside from being the first one created Also, hey, Mattel, Thomas is not the most important character
Interestingly, in Britain at least, all locomotives are referred to with male pronouns, while DMUs and carriages are referred to with female pronouns. That’s why one of the first female ‘engines’ was Daisy, as Awdry wanted to follow the rules.
Then why would Awdry make Mavis female if she’s just a regular type of diesel rather than a rail car and the same going for Christopher making Pip and Emma female as well?
Pip and Emma, being and HST, fit into the “carriages and DMU” category. Mavis is one of few exceptions to the rule, however some have argued that Awdry minded less as Mavis was a diesel, not one of his beloved steam engines, and was also privately owned by the Farquhar Quarry Conpany. He was also at this time under increasing pressure from his publishers to include more female characters.
I always found the Edward model to be an absolute wonder. It was the perfect size locomotive and honestly made me think, “That’s what the real star of the franchise should look like.”
You’ve might of heard the RUclipsr “Unlucky Tug” say this, but, I’m surprised the never made a episode about all the engines asking Edward for help and later that night Gordon and James make fun of Edward and then Edward gets all mad and leaves tidmouth sheds and the other engines get mad Gordon and James so the other engines tell Gordon and James too say sorry but (being their character they are) they are to stubborn and that is how Edward gets moved out of tidmouth sheds.
That would've been a more depressing sendoff. I thought the whole point of the original Steam Team was that they were a big family and no matter what disagreements they had they always made amends and got back together
Edward pulling the train after breaking his crank pins will always be one of my favorite moments in the show. For me, Thomas was really seasons 1-3, and kind of 4. I really don’t think they ever really reproduced the magic of seasons 1-2 ever again. Season 3 had some good moments, including Henry’s forest, I just think the first 2 seasons had the most incredible stories, music, and character development. Edward being removed is moot to me because he’ll always exist in the Thomas we all know and love :)
Man I really wanted him to be in the magic railroad but since the model wasn’t ready at that time I understand but he’s the most famous character in the show you can never forget him
Mattel: Why the hell do so many older people like our kids show? We should actively try to make them stop following the product. Also Mattel: Why the hell is Thomas' viewership continually on a downward spiral?!?!?!? It's like parents aren't putting the show on for their kids anymore or something
I don't think Mattel even thinks on that level. They see the show as nothing but a marketing tool for the merchandise. Remember, Mattel is a toy company, not a media company.
@@TheDemocrab Except they're not. Mattel's sales figures for vehicle-based toys saw a 22% increase in the third quarter of 2022. They don't break it down by property so it could just be Hot Wheels carrying the category, but Mattel's not going to keep a product line if it doesn't make money. There's also licensing to consider, and it turns out that Bachmann's N-scale Percy is the best platform for HOn30 kitbashing on the market by far. Bachmann's making a lot of money on that, and Mattel's making a lot of royalties on Bachmann's TTTE license. So, yeah. Mattel's putting out a minimum viable (business-wise) TV show to market toys. That's all there is to it. They don't care if the show is low-quality garbage as long as the toy money keeps coming in as a result of it.
I think the problem is not all about Edward being removed from the steam team. People can counter by saying that he still has minor roles. All that aside the real problem is the fact Mattel chose to remove Edward. It shows that they didn't see Edward as a historically significant character but just a character in general.
If you're doing rundowns of the models' histories, I'd put in a vote for the narrow gauge engines, especially Rusty. They seem to have undergone the most radical changes over the course of the series, with the original models only seeming to see use in Season 4 and part of Season 5 before new models took their place. Granted, the original models were by far the most kitbashed together, with wheels and running gear often coming from old Triang OO-gauge stock, but the difference in appearance between, say Ssn4 and Ssn7 is striking. And honestly, I found the later models a lot less realistic and more toy-like.
As I’m watching this video I have just completed all of Edward’s faces from Shapeways for my HO Bachmann model. It feels so cool to be watching this while working on my own models to make them more accurate and appealing. I love your videos and really appreciate your in-depth knowledge of the Thomas series! Thank you for being such a true fan to the Thomas community!
I always have felt people see Edward as the "Black Sheep" of the Sodor. It is the same way the other engines saw him just too old and too weak. Though my favorite is Percy I have always liked Edward he was always very soft spoken and polite.
Edward will always be my favorite character growing up ever since I watched this show when I was a kid! What a chad Edward is with his exploit of getting his passengers to the station with only 1 driving wheel in wet rain.
Edward: *exists* Mattel: let's change Edward with a unique designed loco Also Mattel: creates an engine that looks like a loaf of bread and an engine that looks like an orange toilet paper.
TheUnluckyTug mentioned in his Edward video that he didn't get many episodes about himself cos he's not very flawed, so is hard to write for. All 4 stories of Edward's self-named book (Cows, Bertie's Chase, Saved From Scrap & Old Iron) featured him prominently but the main character was someone else. (Gordon/Henry, Bertie, Trevor & James respectively) The dum-dum writers of the HIT/CGI Eras got around this "bland" personality by retrofitting Edward into an old and fretful (i think there was a better word for that...) character.
I knew my most favorite character in the show had a vital essential role from the start back in the days of old. Edward has a certain characteristic the likes of which any train engine character has ever possessed.
if you really think about it, i think edward is quite possibly the best looking engine out there, in that theres no time where he looks off putting or creepy which is unfortunatly the case for some other engines
Even back when I was a kid, I only had one toy of Edward and most other characters had duplicates and that felt wrong to me then and it still does. My favorite episode with Edward from my childhood was Old Iron.
Henry should be next. He's my favourite character overall and his rebuilt form's basis is literally the most famous mixed traffic locomotive in the world, that being the 842-strong LMS Stanier "Black Five". It was his basis that saw the retirement of my channel's namesake.

I think what Mattel did to Edward is what set fans off the most. It's certainly pissed me off and is why I stopped watching. You can't take a character that has been there since the beginning of time and just replace them to abide by gender neutrality of all things. Now I'm in no way saying that the change still should have occurred, but many people would have rather seen characters like Ashima or Rosie take Edwards place at Tidmouth. Some have even said bringing back Molly would have been a welcome change, yet Mattel had to bring in a completely new character with no appeal. The worst part with Nia is Mattel has literally shoved her character down our throats even through its obvious fans hate her. Like you said, they simply just don't care anymore...
One night at Tidmouth sheds, all the engines were sad. Toby was moving to Vicarstown to join Edward. "We certainly will miss you," said Percy. "We're sorry you're getting put in the shade. Due to this and because you're a hard worker, there'll be more stone trains on the Ffarquhar branch for me and Percy to sort out," Thomas agreed. "And I'm sorry I called both you and Henrietta dirty objects. Please forgive me," added James. "I should've never called you an old timer either. You really got me out of a jam when I stalled with the express," Gordon said. "Just remember you're always welcome here whenever you're not too busy," Henry finished. And they all chuckled.
What about an episode on Spencer? I don't really recall him from the books all too much, but I do remember that he's based on the Silver Link, and had a pretty okay entrance episode along side quite a few other good episodes.
