7:48 CNC Machinist here. For anyone wondering, CNC stands for Computer Numeric Control. Basically, if Sir Handel was made on a CNC machine, that means it was a block of metal that was cut/milled into the shape needed for the wheels/chassis on a computerized cutting machine. My guess is that the chassis was machined on a CNC mill, and the wheels turned on a CNC lathe. Probably a live tool capable lathe, given the spokes in the wheels.
@Icy yeah it's bec in the UK dub rusty is male but in the US dub rusty is female. I honestly prefer her as female bec there's almost no female narrow gauge engine in the show
Peter Sam would be a good idea....this weekend is a giant Kerr Stuart reunion on the talyllyn to celebrate peter sam's younger brother Edward Thomas....would be awesome for some more Kerr Stuart content
Like Peter Sam, Sir Handel remained in his Mid-Sodor livery instead of being repainted in the Skarloey Railway's red livery in the TV series. As such, the episode where the trucks crash into Peter Sam makes less sense.
Then again from the height of the incline and the fact the downhill trucks could only see Peter Sam/"Sir Handel" from the front, I still think it makes some sense that they mistook Peter Sam for Sir Handel despite the color difference in the show.
@@Ray_D_Tutto they expected Sir Handel since it's implied he works at the incline and thus when he pretended to be ill Peter Sam was doing his job there.
Great video as usual! Sir Handel really has a lot more to him in the RWS and its a shame that he wasn't in the TVS longer. I feel it also meant that Duncan from S6-S9 just got given all the stories Sir Handel would have gotten. Can't wait to see the SR number 4, my boy Peter Sam in the next one of these!
I’m fucking drunk while watching this and it’s taking me a long time to type this (what with autocorrect and all), but it’s calming. Keep ‘em coming boi. It’s a way for all of us train nerds to keep our childhood alive in these horrible times. Bless you boi, bless you for all your content 🙏❤️
2:10 wait did you just say that Sir Handel was taken apart? Like physically taken apart piece by piece? How did they take him apart and how did they not kill him?
I don’t think they ACTUALLY took him apart piece by piece; but more maybe took a section off of his boiler and used him as an example of how the engines worked or something along those lines.
@@willemdakevin1681 The firebars are the grate that the fire sits on top of. The fact he dropped it (burning coal and all!), is quite impressive. In real life, 'Sir Haydn' was partially stripped in 1951, losing the cab, saddle tank & boiler lagging for an inspection. I imagine this is what they meant?
^^ He’s spot on! I wasn’t the most familiar with them myself before I did the research haha. I also would like to think it was that that inspired Sir Handel to be taken apart? However I wasn’t able to find a direct correlation myself. Given how Awdry wrote the other stories though it would make perfect sense!
Great video. Of course, the name Sir Handel is a play on Haydn and Handel being composers, but of course the loco's name is welsh so pronounced hey-den and the composer's name is austrian so pronounced high-den. And the name Falcon was chosen because Sir Haydn was made at the Falcon works, like Edward Thomas was made by Kerr Stuart hence the name Stuart.
TrainBoy thank you for doing the history and the model of Sir Handel, I've been waiting for this for almost a long time or a while since the Rheneas video. Basically Skarloey, Rheneas and Sir Handle are my favorite characters. Thank you for finally making a video about Sir Handel, I am very very happy
I never noticed the face-swapping for him. I never saw that large-scale model, too. I always wondered where Sir Handel went. It was because he didn't have a model. Shame, that.
Sir Handel wearing an eyepatch answered my question that always bothered me, if the faces have similar feelings to our faces. So it’s a nice bit of confirmation i took from this video.
I met one of the people who helped build Sir Handel’s closeup model, Gareth Hutchinson. He is the Computer Animation lecturer of my university, the University of Soyth Wales. He’s an amazing guy and an absolute legend. He even invited me into his office yesterday and showed me his portfolio. He also built the main narrow gauge Engine Sheds, the viaduct and even did an amazing illustration of Sir Handel. He’ll be leaving USW soon now.😢
I think i understand how the Battery Receiver is hidden off screen. Here is what i think: The models dont have enough room to fit the Reciever so when it is hiddden off screen, a plug is connected to the Battery, this lets the battery be unplugged or Plugged in. When it is unplugged, the Eye Mech wont work. This could be true since when they are moving by them selves, their eyes dont move at all, this is because the receiver is unplugged, however when they are not moving and dont have any Rolling Stock behind them, the reciever is plugged back into the mech and hidden behind the engine to prevent it from being seen.
interesting how the US narration differs so much, that last clip of Sir Handle saying "actually I'm better" is delivered in a much more condescending way in the Michael Angelis narration
sir handel was gonna appear in series 5 but was cut (he had a series 5 model), he was gonna appear in series 6 but he was cut again (he had a series 6 model), he was gonna appear in series 8 but he was cut again the 3rd time (he had a series 8 model), and he was gonna appear in kevin the steamie but was cut
Therapist: Sir Rheneas isn't real, he can't hurt you.

sir Handel . The only character to get banished to the shadow realm

I hope to see Rusty soon. He's my personal favorite Narrow Gauge engine.
Rusty has one of my favourite themes in the narrow gauge railway
Isn't calling an engine rusty like naming a human tuberculosis?
I see that one engine with a gender unknown to the people that made the show.
Good engine

It's nice to know that both his small and large scales models are in a good place
Going over the back story and the small changes to the model in the tv show are great additions to this history of series.
He’s still better than George after a decade
Considering you’ve now done Skarloey, Rheneas, and Sir Handel in order, you should probably continue on up through the numbers to Peter Sam next.
I've always seen Sir Handel as a very underrated, or over hated, of the Skarloey Railway engines.
Ah yes, my second favorite Thomas character. If TheUnluckyTug did an analysis video I would flip. I love Sir Handel.
