    It always confused me in the classic series how most Diesels we’re described as rude and disrespectful when only Diesel, Arry and Bert were the only ones who never changed.

    • @TheGoombaFromNowhere
      @TheGoombaFromNowhere 3 года назад +19

    • @AdmiralBlackstar
      @AdmiralBlackstar 3 года назад +16

      I think it's largely an artifact of Awdry's early portrayal of diesels since he was against the dieselfication of the BR, and in the early periods there were quite a few reasonable complaints, which can largely be summed up as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", thus he initially portrayed them all in a more negative light.

    Many years ago, I remember being on the old Microsoft Train Simulator official forums, when the discussion came up about Rusty, and the other narrow gauge trains. One of the forum members was a friend of the Awdry family, and wrote a letter (yes, with pen and paper) to Christopher Awdry asking questions about the trains. Christopher, at the time, helping in the construction of the various trains. In one of the letters, Christopher referred to Rusty as "She". This started a long argument back and forth, with the forum member writing yet another letter, and encouraging Christopher to chime in on things himself if he could. Christopher stated that his father, Rev Awdry, always described Rusty to him as being a female character, and noted that the name "Rusty" was unisex enough to work both for male, or female. Christopher noted that the first time Rusty was called male, was actually with the Britt Allcroft series, which Awdry was greatly annoyed by. Reportedly, Awdry himself brought this problem up with Allcroft, who told the Reverend that the show was being marketed more toward young boys, and not girls, and thus having a locomotive that was a girl wouldn't work. Besides, there were already two female locomotives (Daisy and Mavis), and correcting the error was just going to push production back, as they'd already recorded the voice-overs where Rusty was called "He". Interestingly, Allcroft did seem to acquiesce to Awdry's thoughts on the character, to some degree, by having Starr (the first narrator), affect a slightly feminine voice when voicing Rusty.
    In the end, though, the whole thing became moot, as by the time that any changes may have been made, viewers were accustomed to seeing Rusty as male, regardless of what the original creator thought.
    Note: The letters back and forth were scanned and uploaded to the forums. This all took place around 2001, shortly after MSTS released.

When Rusty was referred to as a male in Season 10, I was like "So now he's a boy? Make up your mind." Eventually, I adjusted to Rusty being male again from that point onward.

      So, I think we are talking about the same thing, kind of, CNC machine tools (such as a mill) use those motors controlled by a computer to move the work piece, the machine head, or both.
      There are commercial industrial applications for CNC machining because of their reliability and repeatability with little opportunity for operator error, as well as in smaller shops for prototyping and custom work because one can go from a computer modeled design to the physical end result with ease.

    It still confuses me as to why they changed rusty. Upscaling him is one thing but making his face to big and his proportions look weird he just doesn’t look the same as his season 4 models. I prefer the season 4 models in terms of the narrow gauge engines. They’re small and a perfect scale compared to the bigger engines like Edward Henry gordon and james

      agreed. imo the small scale models looked better, mainly due to their faces and proportions but the large scale models just looked so wrong. the faces were weird, the proportions were weird, they just dont feel right to me
