Definitely would like to see more of Maunika. I love cooking Indian food from scratch, and have previously mostly used recipes by Anjum Anand. This looks delicious so I will definitely be giving it a try tonight.
Dear Maunica, thank you for this recipie which is as great as it is simple to make! Last friday I had to prepare a meal for about 25 persons in my small kitchen and I didn't want to spend all day there... so I chose to make this nice spicy dhal. Everybody loved it and no big deal to prepare it, even for so many guests!
I tried this recipe for a visit from my dad, who never eats indian food and he loved it!!! I did add a nice bit of garlic which worked very well, but in general I love this recipe, because it was so super easy! I didn't know dhal would be so easy to make. Thank you!
Yes! This is the dish I will cook for my wife tonight! I don't have tamarind paste, but fresh kokum from Goa. I'll try this as a substitue. I absolutely love the texture of the lentil you show in your video. Beautiful! Keep on don posting such great recepies. Fan of your food blog as well!
This looks like a version of dal from Western or Southern parts of India. But the recipe is really nice. This made me crave for the north Indian dal tadka :)
OMG!!!!!!!!!! I made it today and it's amazing, AMAZING! So easy to make and the taste is phenomenal. I I added honey instead of sugar :) I wish Maunika had more cooking videos on youtube.
250g lentil 2 litre water Teaspoon of turmeric Pinch of salt Simmer for an hour, and smash later Little water to loosen On medium heat pan: 3 tablespoons oil 1 tsp Mustard seeds 1tsp cumin seeds 3/4 cloves 1 piece casual (cinnamon) Chilli to taste 8-10 curry leaves Add lentils and fry the dhal 1tsp kashmiri chilli powder A pinch of turmeric 2 tsp jaggery (sugar) 2 tsp tamarind paste you can swap for lime juice. Add a little coriander to garnish at the end.
I was a bit worried to have a sparse dish like lentils with no coriander seed, no onion or tomato, no dairy of any kind, nor garlic or ginger. Not what I'm used to with Indian cooking. I fought off the urge to add any of those, and stuck to the recipe. My restraint was rewarded. A truly unique taste. I did add quite a bit more salt than the recipe called for. Probably a good 1/4 tsp or so. Have it with chapati - it makes the dish. I also put the cloves and cinnamon in a spice bag.
perfect video, love dhal so much! It is a staple at my house. I'm from Bahrain so we have alot of different cultures melded together over many years. Indian being one of them but we do have a slight twist to the one shown. Since dhal or adas/ shoorbet adas in arabic is so easy and simple to cook it is very maliable in terms of flavour. In our family adas consists of; Ginger Sliced Potatoes Sliced Onions Finely chopped Garlic Finely chopped Coriander Finely chopped Tomatoes Finely chopped Lemon juiced Red lentils Washed Spices: coriander and tumeric Finally served with lemon wedge and rice, typically its seen as a side dish perhaps coupled with grilled grouper or hammour.
I have tried it with booth pigeon pea and split gram(chana dal) and the later tastes better. Also i used mustard oil for the tempering. it increased the flavour quite a notches. loved your recipe btw
Hi Maunika, the dal came out perfect! The tamarindi paste changed a bit the color of the dal to a more darker then vibrant yellow but the taste is great!!
Thank You very much Maunika for the wonderful recipe! Love it! If you please, I want to ask you about Indian potato curry? -love always from Estonia- :-)
We dont add butter in Indian recipes generally except on naaan or chapatis but thats wrong practice also if you love too much salt then u can add(personal taste)..we love our ghee(clarified butter)
I am so glad this is #vegan , It looks really yummy, simple and healthy. I am definitely gonna try making this, probably with little less of that RED weaponizable powder. Thanks Maunika !
Beautiful dahl. I saw you did not wash the lentils. Where they already clean or there was no need for a wash? Also, have you ever tried preparing the lentils with a bit of red wine? Saludos!
what is Maunika's background in indian cuisine? I've seen many video's on youtube of indian cuisine, and I must say, a lot of them are WRONG, and are either not authentic, or just completely wrong, but Maunika's is on point, and authentic.
I just followed this recipe to a tee: 250g of Split Pigeon Peas, 8.5 cups water. Brought to a boil and simmered for an hour. My result was not a thick Dal. I got a pot of runny, soupy disappointment. Even after I mashed it up, still runny. The amount of peas she uses looked like more than double, maybe even triple what I used (which was 250g as said in the video). I have a digital food scale, so the weight was spot on. If you look at the inside edge of the pot at 1:04 it looks like something was poured out based on the residue sticking to the side. I've noticed a lot of TV and RUclips chefs do things like this. I've even seen videos where the final product, after simmering for a while, was in a totally different colored pot. Beware of FRAUDS!
maunika you need to mention which lentil do we need for dahl. i used the green one and it s not mashy at all, i should have used the red lentil as I dont have the one that you use.
It was soo easy and it was super easy. I thought for a moment that my spices were too burnt for the concentrated smell, but dont worry just lower the heat.
Thanks everyone for your kind comments! So glad to see everyone enjoying the recipes. Maunika.
Maybe you could get the subtitles fixed? 'Mascara' sugar sounds just wrong and far less tasty than muscovado sugar. ;)
Please add more videos to your channel!
You are one of the best Indian cooks. I love your dhal mukhani. I love punjabi food it is the best.
Exactly what I love about indian food, Balance !
Well, this is perfect in a cold day...

I make this dal ion a different way which loved my family and friends. My cook taught me. Pass me your email and I can send you the recipe
Pppp has ppop
I love this sweet dhal poured on a plate of plain basmati rice, with red onions and tomato salad, and some poppadum on the side. delicious!
as an indian myself, that is one of easiest/healthiest dishes to make
I would have thought a salad would be easier and just as healthy if not more healthy
Definitely would like to see more of Maunika. I love cooking Indian food from scratch, and have previously mostly used recipes by Anjum Anand. This looks delicious so I will definitely be giving it a try tonight.

I was hoping to see an Indian chef/cook on food tube. Thanks for making it possible.
- Curry love
most important is that he/she know what they are doing. Not ethnicity.
The amount of spices in Indian dishes is quite astonishing. Would love to do one of Maunika's recipes in the future :)
For the amount of lentils the turmeric is great also I use Kashmiri chilli powder which has a mild heat:)
I love Indian dishes, the more spices the better! Please do more videos, Maunika! :)
Definitely want to see more of Maunika!

Wow there is so many versions of dhal in India. My mom makes the vegetable dhal stew version!
Love Maunika, presence and her projection. Thanks for the wonderful recipes as well!
It's really hard to find these ingredients here in Italy. Looks yummy, but I won't be able to make it myself!
i m sure you have a spice shop somewhere.
you don't need them all. get garam masala, tumeric, cumin, and paprika. that will suffice. the rest you should have like salt+pepper...
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. It's so yum! I have put honey (for sweetness) and lemon (for sour) and turned out delicious.
Made this last night, my 7 year old loved it! Thanks Maunika. @maunikagowardhan
Absolutely Top - thankyou Maunika and Team Jamie

I was thinking the same - was gonna add, until I read your comment..thanks for sharing.

omfg it's so good, instead of the tamarind I've used a plum jam that was very sour, it was one of the best dishes I've ever cooked
This is making my mouth water.
Beautiful recipe!
Love the balance.
Excellent!!!....looks yummy. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful dahl.
I saw you did not wash the lentils. Where they already clean or there was no need for a wash?
Also, have you ever tried preparing the lentils with a bit of red wine?

More Indian food plz!!! Awesome recipe :)

I've seen many video's on youtube of indian cuisine, and I must say, a lot of them are WRONG, and are either not authentic, or just completely wrong, but Maunika's is on point, and authentic.
I'm from Trinidad and this is our usual everyday dhal
Including the sugar? we dont have sugar in Pakistan in our dal recipes
This was great, quick and easy. I added a touch of garlic paste. Thank you.
Fantastic recipe! Perfect balance.
Thanks for the recipe! I must try this soon. Thanks Maunika!!
So glad you like it! Love cooking & sharing my recipes:)

Pigeon peas have a different consistency compared to lentils. The recipe works perfectly with yellow or red lentils.
why do I make myself suffer by watching people cook DELICIOUS food and then watch them eat it in front of me?! lol I'm totally going to make this
This was awesome. You are the best
more from Maunika plz, even if her dishes would not look amazing she still will be gorgeous!
Ahhh! Thank you so much.
This video doubles as a masterclass on how to authentically pronounce "Dhal"
Absolutely lovely!

Halo, the recipe link doesn't work. Could you share the ingredient list?

Looks yummy
It was soo easy and it was super easy. I thought for a moment that my spices were too burnt for the concentrated smell, but dont worry just lower the heat.
amazing!! please, more!!
Family favourite!
What if one only has dried curry leaves? Do we add it with the dal in the beginning so it re-hydrates?
can we have more of maunika?
so if i wanted to make a spicy dhal, do i just substitute the tamarind paste with some minced really hot peppers?
hi jamie can plz post video of dal makni which can be sweet and sour
