I first tried dhal when I worked as a security guard in one Indian kitchen and I'm telling you, I was very much fascinated. All food I tried was super good, but dhal is something simple, yet the best, at lest for me. Also, I have only nice words for my Indian friends. I don't work there anymore, but I still message one of them, and sometimes I get to see him, when he can come downtown. God bless India!
I have been making dals for years, one just a few hours ago, but I am always looking for new ideas and insights, and your recipe was what I needed. Thank you! And you’re so soothing to watch. 15 mins seemed 5.
I cant say how grateful I am that I found this on RUclips! I love lentils and I missed home cooking. This recipe is incredible and definitely was a much needed warm hug haha!
Cooked it today with some adjustments (added fresh coriander and mint; skipped fenugreek leaves) and this dhal came out much better than the other variations I've tried before. Better than the recipes that include coconut milk. Thank you a lot for a detailed recipe and all the additional explanations.

O M G I have just made this it is amazing. I've been looking for a Dahl recipe like the one I had in India and never been happy but this, is, amazing love it
Thanks. I bought a bag full of lentils from the Ethiopian store because I had not bought it from Indian Grocery for like around 15 years. Lentils were a staple in my diet, and I plan on continuing to get lentils from local Indian grocery stores for plant-based meals. This video was very informative, and I will watch the rest later. I got up to 1:45.
I made this a few days ago and it was perfect. Your videos are so beautifully executed, and you are a terrific presenter. thank you for putting these together to enrich our lives. X
Thank you for sharing this. I lived mainly on the brown lentils for years. I just cooked them with onions, peanuts and soy sauce. Average Americans dont know how to cook, how to use spices. I admire Indian farmers and cooks. Lately I discovered red lentils and yellow ones or peas? They stay red when I cook them, however. ?
thanks for going through all the steps so thoroughly. I never know when my dal is soft enough and your explanation and method is excellent. Most Chefs don't offer that explanation for us newbies.
5 years later now that we are in Lockdown with COVID 19 this video is a wonderful distraction. I have lentils... don't have tomatoes though. I want to make this. How about you?
Its def next on my list to make (shops may be empty but I do have red lentils in the cupboard!). Indian food is perfect for now, such lovely flavours, comforting, filling, nutritious and either vegan or easily adaptable so perfect for me!
Just check and I have all the ingredients. My B/F thinks he is the best making this. I am going to surprise him this evening with my culinary delights- thanks Hari
This was always a staple when my wife and I were bringing up our five kids in the eighties. We also used to add currants and a clove or two. Always served with lots of rice.
Thank you for making this video. It was calming to watch, all clear instructions for newbies to follow, no nauseating frame transitions, no distracting background music, just a nice, lovely informative calming learning experience. Subscribed immediately. Love love love the dish. Thank you again.
I am so happy to read that you enjoyed the daal - Great choice fr students - its cheap and really nourishing! Please do download my free app as there are lots of other recipes to try hari.is/2P5rXbk Thanks
Real Health food? Really? This is masoor dhal (lentils). You can eat 1 kg of chicken or beef or fish and nothing will happen to you. However if you eat 50 gms of these lentils, you will bloated within the next few hours. :-) Health foods are fruits, oily fish and vegetables, not lentils.
Rowen Fernandes bloating most often indicates you aren’t getting enough fiber in your diet, and actually need to be consuming more high-fiber food such as lentils and other pulses and legumes
@@rowenfernandes2956 Don't spread misinformation please. Lentils are top quality food across the board. Fruits are full of sugar. Oily fish is extremely expensive and thus not accessible to most people. Vegetables contain no calories so you have to eat kilos of them. Beef has a Major CO2 footprint, not to mention the negative health effects. Chicken is fine, fish is fine, .. both in moderation & only to supply you with essential aminoacids. Keep it real!
Gotta love anyone who cooks in Le Crueset!! Nice to see an Indian recipe being cooked in good stainless steel utensils instead of non stick pans (often scratched) that a lot of cooks use in their videos! I didn't need to learn how to make daal but I watched your video any way!
I've never tried cooking indian food before. This recipe is absolutely delicious, and easy to make! It's vegan budget meal if you use oil instead of ghee.
Wow - I am so happy to hear that you gave this a go especially as you have never cooked Indian food before! There are so many Indian dishes that are suitable for a vegan diet or can be adapted to suit a vegan diet and lots are cheap too. Do take a look at the website and app where you can search by vegan too. www.harighotra.co.uk Thanks so much for watching and trying the recipe. Hari
Well I like your British accent from Toronto of guyanese origin in the west indies. Our dall is cooked with yellow split peas boiled for about 2 hours with garlic and turmeric then chunkay with oil ,garlic and Cuman. We use dall to compliment any dishes with meat or vegetables
I made this tonight but with split yellow gram. Didn't have the grated ginger or the fenugreek. My vegetarian son absolutley loved it and it was very emotional for me. It tasted the same as the way my Mum used to make it. Shes not here now and its the first time I have tasted anything tgat taseted like her cooking. It was lovely. Thankyou for the demonstration of how to make it Hari.
Oh my you have just made me well up!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I'm so happy I could help to bring back your mums memory through this dish - thank you. If you took a picture I would love to see it - you can post it on my free app! Thank you and stay safe x
I find Indian food the best cure for a blue mood on a wet, chilly, cloudy day. The fantastic, intense and to westerners exotic spice flavors conspire to brighten up ones mood. Thanks for this mouthwatering recipe.
I cooked this with my 15 year old daughter. We tried the masala on a teaspoon and next will try it on bread. We absolutely loved it. Once the dal was complete it was absolutely divine. Thankyou so much for this recipe. I did add x3 cardamom pods bcoz I love the flavour they add.
I watched once then gathered my ingredients and followed along in real-time. This dish was simple and delicious. It was fun to follow along! Thank you!
Susan Brennan I’m so happy to read that you watched, cooked and had fun. Thank you - if you took a picture it would be great if you could post it on my app do I can see it!

Hi Hari, I am an American who has become absolutely enthralled with Indian cooking and culture and I love your videos so much. In my Indian cooking journey - I noticed with many dhal recipes - garlic and ginger is chopped and added when making the masala portion - whereas in a lot of other dishes ginger garlic paste is used instead. Is it possible you can help me understand the different applications as to why they should be added as chopped and not in a paste?
Hi That is great to know - so pleased that you are enjoying the videos. The difference is really personal preference. I prefer not to buy garlic, ginger pastes because I prefer to use fresh so I use what I have in my fridge and its quicker to chop or grate rather then get a blender out. I also like the texture of garlic slices in my dhal. If I wanted to cook something with a silky smooth sauce I may then blitz the ginger and garlic to a paste and use that. I also sometimes blitz to make a homemade paste of ginger and garlic if I have a lot of it that needs using up. I will cover with oil and and keeps for a few months in the fridge. Does that help and answer your question? I would also urge you to download my free app so you can ask me questions and I will respond directly. Just search Hari Ghotra in your app store. Thanks so much Hari
I’ve seen a lot of Dahl recipes. This is the only one that actually worked for me. And I also really like how you are guiding with every step, very reassuring:) Thank you
Great recipe! In my family we always add the salt after the dahl has cooked. We found that the salt in with the dahl at the beginning keeps the grains separate. Love the fried chillies❣️🔥
I never taste dhal before so I follow your recipes and the only thing I miss in my ingredients is garam masala. I don’t have it in my pantry and I don’t know where to get it. My neighbors all said the smell from the dal was wonderful but I couldn’t smell it because my nose was overwhelming with all the spices. I like the taste of dhal. I can’t wait to try it for my son since he is a vegetarian now.
First saw this video a few months ago, and came back to tell you how much I love this recipe. It's such a delicious and easy meal that I've made it almost every week since March. Looking forward to trying more of your recipes :)
This was so delicious and just like my stepmum’s which I’ve been trying to get my Dahl like for yearrrssssss!!! Even my boyfriend (who doesn’t like lentils) and my baby (who’s a picky eater) liked it!!!! Xxxxx
Hari, you it was who quite by chance started my 'dhalmania'. And I haven't looked back! Indian food is now a big part of my healthy sliming régime, drastically reducing meat content and concentrating on delicious low-GI pulses and veg. With my Sri Lankan and Indian friends, I compare and combine with enthusiasts, and we all plunder your beautifully-arranged website.
Oh my - what a wonderful comment to read!! I'm thrilled to hear that 'dhalmania' has taken over your friends and family!! It's truly wonderful to hear that you are using the website and sharing ideas and cooking together. That was the sole purpose of me starting this whole thing! Thank you, you have made my day!
I would just like to thank you for this recipe. My partner is Asian (uk pakistan) In 15 years I have never cooked any of the food I enjoy with my v talented inlaws. There are awesome cooks in the family - how could I compete? I did try to make channa years ago (followed a recipe to the T bought everything from an Asian grocers) and it was awful and knocked my confidence. I've been trying recipes off YT during lock down. I started with pakora, then Saag Aloo, and I thought I'd try your dahl. It was delicious! - to be told it was better than my sister in laws was high praise indeed, I was speechless! You've given me confidence so thank you. I'm vegetarian and I've always said if I could cook, saag aloo, dahl and channa I'd be happy. So I'll find a good channa recipe next. Thank you again. Take care.

@@HariGhotra thank you for the encouragement. I'll definitely check out the website. I'd watched 10 Dahl videos before I found yours. I first made this about a year ago. I’m pretty sure I commented on how fabulous it was. I’m very new to Indian food still even after trying this a year ago. I’ve never had any other dhal than this. I absolutely love it, I make it very often sometimes four times a week LOL anyways I just want to say thank you for sharing and now that I’m on a holiday I’m going to do a marathon on all of your recipes. I am plant based so there’s a lot of things that I will need to change, but I just use vegetable broth in place of ghee. Thanks so much for sharing 😊

It did actually bring tears to my eyes. Couldn't believe how like my Mums it was. I'm sorry I didn't taje a photograph, but I will be trying out your recipes and will definitely take photographs next time.
I dont know why i clicked on your video because i make masur dal so frequently so didn't need to learn it but I was the happiest after watching your video coz your accent is marvelous, your georgous and your process of making masur dal is just like mine.just a tip put the salt into the pan immediately after you add tomatoes, dont wait for long.salt helps to break down the tomatoes faster.i add another spoon ghee just before putting the garam masala.smells and tastes divine.
It goes beautifully with your skin tone, sooo pretty ❤️ Trini Dahl is so simple, i started making my own tweaks that look similar to yours and it makes me so happy ❤️❤️ beautiful food all over
just made this. My son and I are LOVING IT. I added curry and garam masala! YUMM!! Oh, and I roasted potatoes and stirred them in with some baby organic spinach and a teaspoon of brown sugar at the end. Thank you!! : )

Can't wait to try this, such a nice demonstration thank you. Loved your delivery and enjoyed the lack of music. Hearing the pans sizzle you can almost smell the spices ❤️
I’ve watch loads of cooking channels, try my best to reincarnate what I learn from them but this is the first for me that’s explains how the taste of different spices can alter when cooking , ref Turmeric so thank you .
I JUST made this, and hot damn, it’s good. I also think that some of that Masala sauce on a toasted English muffin and a poached egg is in my future. Thank you. ❤️
GARAM MASALA from Dishoom Cookbook We use garam masala in almost every savoury dish we make. We give two methods for this spice mix: a quick recipe using a pan, and a longer recipe using the oven. The longer one will yield a richer, fuller flavour. As with all masalas, freshly grinding your spices produces the best results. For an especially rich garam masala, add a large pinch each of saffron and grated nutmeg along with the poppy seeds and rose petals. The garam masala will keep an airtight container in a cool, dark cupboard for up to a month. MAKES ABOUT 50g ˜ 1 black cardamom pod 4 cloves 5g black peppercorns 2 large cinnamon sticks 10g coriander seeds 5g cumin seeds 4g fennel seeds 2g star anise 1 bay leaf 2g mace blades 10g poppy seeds 2g dried rose petals OVEN METHOD 1.Heat the oven to 50°C (lowest Gas). Spread everything apart from the poppy seeds and rose petals on a baking sheet. Place in the oven for 2½ hours. 2.Add the poppy seeds and rose petals to the tray, place it back in the oven and turn the oven off. Allow the mixture to cool in the switched-off oven for 30 minutes. 3.Transfer the cooled spice mix to a spice grinder and grind to a fine powder. PAN METHOD 1.Put everything apart from the poppy seeds and rose petals into a cold, dry frying pan and place over a medium heat to warm, shaking the pan occasionally. Toast for 2 minutes, then turn off the heat. 2.Add the poppy seeds and rose petals, and let the mixture cool in the pan. 3.Transfer the cooled spice mix to a spice grinder and grind to a fine powder. I highly recommend making dishoom's house black lentils it's very good.

I love this video and also the Aloo Gobi video from Hari. Watched it many times and have her on video while cooking to make sure the procedure's right. My husband says this is the best dhal he ate in his whole life! He's had many dhals in his life so I am so happy to say this. The wonderful thing is, this is quick and easy and delicious. When Mum put some on a piece of bread for you when you came in starving from school,,our mum put some of the bolognese sauce on bread for us,being Italians,,,,great video Thank you
I just love that - mums are fantastic and I love how we all find common ground across food. Thank you so much for watching and I just love your comment Thanks you Hari

I also got bread and homemade jam, and sometimes cheese.
I'm new to this, but have found myself trying darn near every masoor dal recipe I could find at least once. I especially like this one. Thank you!
I always come back to this recipe. It is always so yummy!!! And she has such a sweet manner about her!
That is great to hear!
I have been making dals for years, one just a few hours ago, but I am always looking for new ideas and insights, and your recipe was what I needed. Thank you! And you’re so soothing to watch. 15 mins seemed 5.
Thanks for watching always great to show a different way of doing something
I cant say how grateful I am that I found this on RUclips! I love lentils and I missed home cooking. This recipe is incredible and definitely was a much needed warm hug haha!
Cooked it today with some adjustments (added fresh coriander and mint; skipped fenugreek leaves) and this dhal came out much better than the other variations I've tried before. Better than the recipes that include coconut milk. Thank you a lot for a detailed recipe and all the additional explanations.
I can't wait to buy all the ingredient to start this delicious dish!!
This was just lovely. THANK YOU!. No showboating , just simple instructions and a calming and relaxed.Looks simple and delicious! You have a new subscriber.
I discovered your excellent videos when I searched for a recipe for naan bread. Another subscriber.

thank you so much ! im living away from my mum at uni and i really needed to see a live demonstration again ! this way brilliant my dahl turned out great!!!!
Horizon_Killa oh I am so pleased to hear that! So happy I could help get you the flavours from home!
O M G I have just made this it is amazing. I've been looking for a Dahl recipe like the one I had in India and never been happy but this, is, amazing love it
You have my dream kitchen. So light and bright.
Ivor Putnam Thank you for trying this - I’m so pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you for you lovely comments!
Thanks for watching Amrita glad it was helpful
5 years later now that we are in Lockdown with COVID 19 this video is a wonderful distraction. I have lentils... don't have tomatoes though. I want to make this. How about you?
I'm so pleased you enjoyed watching - if you have tinned tomatoes you can use those? Thanks for watching.
Its def next on my list to make (shops may be empty but I do have red lentils in the cupboard!). Indian food is perfect for now, such lovely flavours, comforting, filling, nutritious and either vegan or easily adaptable so perfect for me!
Same! I’ll call them Covid Lentils 😊. Honestly, I think canned tomatoes are totally fine.
Just check and I have all the ingredients. My B/F thinks he is the best making this. I am going to surprise him this evening with my culinary delights- thanks Hari
Titia Hailey making it tomorrow!

The best red lentil Dahl I've ever tasted. I make it once a week, eat every other day. A real health food.
Real Health food? Really?
This is masoor dhal (lentils). You can eat 1 kg of chicken or beef or fish and nothing will happen to you. However if you eat 50 gms of these lentils, you will bloated within the next few hours. :-)
Health foods are fruits, oily fish and vegetables, not lentils.
Paretozen m
@@Paretozen yes, lentils are a great food, but you are spreading some misinformation too. Fruits are great for you too.

Always happy to help - I have to say I have just had a bowl full myself!! Glad you love it too 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Gotta love anyone who cooks in Le Crueset!!
Well I like your British accent from Toronto of guyanese origin in the west indies. Our dall is cooked with yellow split peas boiled for about 2 hours with garlic and turmeric then chunkay with oil ,garlic and Cuman. We use dall to compliment any dishes with meat or vegetables
Thanks for the lovely recipe! I am about to make one with your recipe.

And I also really like how you are guiding with every step, very reassuring:)
Thank you
So pleased you enjoyed it - I love dhal people can make things complicated when they don’t need to be!
Have made this 5 or so times now and will be making it for the rest of my days. It is perfection.
I like that idea of having a big tin for all the spices. Going to try that!
Thanks for the reminder. Listened rather than watched much of this.

Take care.

GARAM MASALA from Dishoom Cookbook
We use garam masala in almost every savoury dish we make.
MAKES ABOUT 50g
˜
1 black cardamom pod
4 cloves
5g black peppercorns
2 large cinnamon sticks
10g coriander seeds
5g cumin seeds
4g fennel seeds
2g star anise
1 bay leaf
2g mace blades
10g poppy seeds
2g dried rose petals
OVEN METHOD
1.Heat the oven to 50°C (lowest Gas).
PAN METHOD
1.Put everything apart from the poppy seeds and rose petals into a cold, dry frying pan and place over a medium heat to warm, shaking the pan occasionally.
