Who is this lady?
Gina Petitti was born in 1935 in Faeto, Italy. Her family ran a farm in Italy and she met her husband, Vito, in the same town. In 1970 Gina, Vito, and her 4 children immigrated to America. Gina’s husband passed away in 2012, but she is surrounded by a large family, which includes 9 grandchildren, and lives 5 minutes away from her eldest daughter in New Jersey. Gina spends her time cooking, gardening, and being an active member of her local Church.
Where does Gina get her recipes?
Most of these recipes are from what she learned growing up in Italy, but some of them have evolved over time. She has also learned new recipes from friends and family in America. She is always eager to try new things.
Why is no one helping her in the video?
Grandma Gina doesn’t want help! Usually, it’s because we will slow her down or not do it “her way.” For the videos we only show her, but when the camera cuts we jump in and help form the cookies or prep for the next step.
Why don’t we buy her a new...?
Grandma Gina has a closet and garage full of new gadgets, spoons, forks, pots, etc… but she doesn’t like them because she is used to doing it with her old tools. She has fun getting her hands dirty!
Who is behind the camera?
Her retired son-in-law films, her daughter helps her prep, and she usually has one or two grandkids in the kitchen.
Does Gina read the comments?

She reminds me of when I grew up in Brooklyn ny many many years ago with all the Italian ladies on the block including my grandma and great grandma. every sunday there were 5 italian ladies in my moms kitchen with same accent and all the food to match ! unfortunately now that they have all passed i can only only remember a few recipies. Over twenty years ago, I bought a culinary encyclopedia second hand. There was a recipe for Italian minestrone soup. I tried it and the result was extraordinary! People were raving about it! My mother's elderly friends were claiming that it had curative powers: They recovered from sicknesses. But actually, the secret of it was twofold. First, healthy ingredients, and second, NEVER boil. You can get away with frying tomatoes furiously, but usually excessive heat kills flavour. I am sure that this grandma's lentil soup is as healthy as was my minestrone!

Forgot about this recipe! I like that it's simple and you can easily adjust the amount made...we are empty nesters so this is a great option for soup!
I think Gina said something rather profound in its simplicity. She said she"feels they (her family) love me. So I cook and make everybody happy" Its a beautiful cycle of love and makes a world of difference. May we all become more like Gina.

I grew up in a large Sicilian family who over time immigrated to the USA. We all lived in general proximity to each other. And the kitchen was the hub for everything. I could tell who came over the ocean when they were young and who came over later in life. all by their English accent. Nana Gina's accent is a spice you can not find in any store. If you were blessed, you grew up hearing it - usually from the Kitchen. It is the spice that makes the dish perfect. Grazie Nana Gina.

Made this for our neighbour who joined us for lunch today. It was fabulous. Such a satisfying, rich, earthy flavour. It was so successful we abandoned the idea of cooking supper, but ate this again instead with homemade bread. It’s going on our weekly menus for winter. Make it. You won’t regret it.

I'm old enough to be her daughter so I call her Mama Gina. She's a lovely lady. I wish her family would make a youtube video of all her songs just so we could listen to her while we relax and eat her recipes or while we cook them or just when we feel like some pretty Italian songs. I love to say along with her in my best Italian accent she has taught me...somebody like, they put , somebody no like, they don't put. She is a gem.I love her. I would love to sit and listen to her tell old stories of when she was growing up and raising her children. I used to ask my grandma and her friends for their old stories I had heard many times but I never grew tired of them.

I feel she has saved me living on my own old age like lot ppl I started buying Italian frozen dinners expensive but good but now I have heart to cook properly again & fill freezer with what make yourself like Gina I'm losing fat weight & feeling energetic again. My Nonna used to make this exact soup down to the shell pasta and topped with parmesan. The part that really got me though was when she started to sing. That really reminded me of my childhood with nonna.

I am almost 80 years old. We grew our own food, raised chickens, all in the city. We canned and dried out produce and meat, even the fish my grandfather and uncles caught. We always had a six month supply by preparing on a regular basis, including medical supplies. Sharing with those who needed help from time to time. I have continued this practice up to the present and taught my children and grandchildren to do the same. We are not panicking because we have been prepared. Reconsider this practice everyone when things begin to normalize. Prayers for our brother man. 💗

My wife is pregnant and loved this simple recipe. Also for anyone who added too much liquid like me, don't try and boil it away after everything is combined. The lentils will break apart and your clarified soup will begin to permeate with bits of lentils. Besides, although the entirety of the soup was good, the liquid was the best part for us. Delicious 😋
