    thank you for making this. In my situation, I was working on a 2nd story roof with a long extension ladder. The pliers + screwdriver trick really helped. Just seeing it made it possible for someone who is not excited to be on a high ladder to get this done.

    You could also use a screw into the plastic end that stuck flush in the mortar and pull it out with a hammer claw.

  • @igisjvb

    Thanks for making this. It was helpful. I replaced all my shutters in August of 2022, and they worked great. I noticed today that the anchors on the top half of most of my 13 shutters have now broken. I have no idea why they would have broken. They went in and snugged up just fine when I put them on originally. Any thoughts on that?

    • @laffilmfest3759
      @laffilmfest3759  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hello...most times I see them broke is because of wind getting in behind them time after time which will eventually weaken and snap them off. Secondary solution would be to remove the plastic stuck in the hole with a long drill bit then tap in a wooden dowl piece that will come out at the edge of the brick...pre-drill the dowl then install an exterior wood screw with a stainless steel washer...touch up with matching paint and that will hold well, besides that I'm not sure what else u could do...?

      U could try squirting some exterior caulk in the hole first then the anchor...won't keep the anchors from breaking but allow them to fit more snugg

    • @laffilmfest3759
      @laffilmfest3759  Год назад +1

      Not really sure Josh. Always start small like a 3/16 and see how that does...sometimes u take the center core out the rest collapses and falls out...but be real careful, the older the shutter the more brittle they become...like an egg shell...let me know what size worked for u .

    Do you ever use any construction adhesive or caulk or something in the hole to help the replacement pin grip? I have some shutters that have blown down and now the the pins don't grip as tight (the fact that the mortar is really 'sandy' doesn't help). Anyways, thanks for the video...

    • @laffilmfest3759
      @laffilmfest3759  Год назад +3

      Hi Shawn...several fixes for that...u could use a caulking gun and fill the hole with caulk then push the pin in while the caulk is still wet, once the caulk is dry it will hold good, caulking is like an adhesive, just a latex caulk would work fine, another solution would be to tap in a wooden dow pin and cut it flush with the brick. Then predrilled the pin and install a exterior construction screw with a stainless steel washer...touch up the screw to match ur shutter color and u r done, lowes or home depot could make u a sample color for $5...nice thing about doing it this way is u can remove the shutter to paint if u wanted too...hope this helps. Of course u could also just tape in like a shim piece to take up room then tap in ur shutter pin :)

      @@laffilmfest3759 I appreciate the suggestions! I think I'll try the caulk idea first. I just wasn't sure how well caulk would 'hold' to the mortar. Have a good day!

      @@laffilmfest3759 This is exactly what I was looking for. I replaced my vinyl shutter that had blown off, and now it's blown off again, pulling the new fasteners out with it. Luckily it didn't break, but I'm going to put caulk in the holes first.

    • @laffilmfest3759
      @laffilmfest3759  11 месяцев назад +2

      U could fill the hole with caulk and set the plastic anchor as long as u have a way to hold the shutter tight against your house until the caulking sets up( 2 hours), or, shave splinters from like a paint stir stick and hammer a few inside the hole, then ur anchor will fit better, but if the hole is really sandy and much larger then the original size I would probably figure out what wood dowel size would tightly fit in there, then forget the plastic anchors and get something like a deckmate exterior screw and couple it with a stainless steel washer, predrill the dowel pin once u have installed it...then install the shutter with the screw.. nice thing is u can always remove the shutters to paint...I hope this helps...clear as mud I know :)

      @@laffilmfest3759 That's a good alternative, because I wondered what would happen when the next storm came up and this time the shutter broke. I would not want to drill out the hard caulk!

  • @nanabbyrd

    I was told that the anchor has bored out the hole so it can’t take hold. What can I do?

    • @laffilmfest3759
      @laffilmfest3759  Год назад

      Hi Brenda...u have several options, with a caulking gun or hand held squeeze tube fill the hole with a latex caulk...then while the caulk is still wet insert the anchor, make sure the shutter is tight against the house by pressing on it or leaning like a ladder against it until the caulk dries(2 hours dry time)...this should hold, u might need a washer on the pin if it had pulled through the shutter, second option is to hammer in a piece of wooden dow rod into the hole...cut off flush with the brick( I'm assuming it's brick) then drill a small pilot hole in the center of the dow pin...then install an exterior screw with a washer...touch up with a little paint...good to go, it will look a bit different from the other pins but believe u me with everything happening with life u will soon forget that little detail...hope this helps :)

    What if my shutters are warped?

    • @laffilmfest3759
      @laffilmfest3759  Год назад

      Hello Gina. Not a good scenerio :(... vinyl shutters will warp especially if they are facing south and painted a darker color. U might be able to pull them tight against the house but they may remain wavy...the big box stores sell lots of sizes and a variety of colors...some are sold as printable shutters but if u rough them up with sand paper and apply a good exterior primer/paint most of them should hold up...keep in mind the lighter the color the less heat they will absorbed...thanks for swinging by the channel :)
