- Being a home owner can have its challenges but they are all totally worth it! One of the things I've had issues with is loose shutters. The cheap plastic hardware they are attached with become brittle with age. The break or snap off leaving the shutter hanging on for dear life or completely falling off of the house. I've found a great, long term solution for reattaching the shutters to the brick.

Awesome, a vinyl shutter(s) just came off in a recent storm (one completely off a couple of others are now loose, one vinyl loose or broke...was going to simply re-install with vinyl shutter nails...but, I think I'm going to take this route, thx for sharing.
This method has been really good for me. I haven’t had any come loose that I fixed this way.

Another great video TightWadDIY! I had the same issue and used the same repair method but took it one step further. I cut the head off of the removed plastic anchors. Then with a die grinder, removed enough material from the backside of the anchor to allow gluing it onto the new screw head.

thank you ! first time my shutter flew off with high wind storm in the East. I think I can do this myself . Mine is second story so magnet idea was a help

Thankful for that warning against spiders. Not necessarily ideal to spazz out over a spider while on a ladder 20 ft above ground. 😅

The idea and concept is great. Make sure you use aluminum or stainless screws. If the screws in this video rust, it will run down the shudder and then you have a mess. It will be tough to get the rust off the vinyl.
The spray paint helps protect them.

You are welcome. I tried using the plastic screws again but they failed within a year or two. I’ve never had to replace any of them done with the metal screws.

I drill a tiny hole in broken fastener and screw in a drywall screw then just yank it out
Robert Tickell They are so brittle, it’s hard to get a screw to go in. I will try this again next time.

I also have problems with the plastic spikes shearing off every 2 or 3 years, when gusty winds hit. My spikes are 1/4 inch, so if I need to pull one out that is sheared flush to the wall, I drill a 1/8 hole in the center. Then I screw in a drywall screw almost all the way in. Then a claw hammer will pull it right out. 😀 I am going to replace everything with screws and anchors like in your video.

@@TightWadDIY I see some people are saying to use Tapcon concrete screws for brick. What is the downside of that?
@@davidsmith2562They work great if there isn’t already a hole or if you can find one but enough to fill the hole.
@TightWadDIY ok, that makes sense. In my case, the holes are already there, and originally they were all 1/4" but some of them seem a little larger. So I think your idea with plastic anchors that expand outward from the screw is the best way to go.
@TightWadDIY One more question, please. I'm not an expert at hardware sizes. In your video, I see the Everbuilt plugs are #10-12 x 1-1/2". That length is perfect, but I'm not good at the diameter size. My holes are 1/4" so is #10-12 right for them?
How do you hang them on an uneven stone exterior? Some kind of shim?
Are these screws flat on the bottoms or are they pointed and when you put in the anchors is the whole bigger than the screws first how do you know which drill bit to used to do that
If you use 1/4"-20 hex or Sidewalk machine screws, try the following. Drill as explained below and blow or vacuum out hole dust. Slide in the tails of 2 nylon zip ties opposite metal anchor deep into small pilot hole. Hammer in anchor correctly flush and snip off zip ties. Drive home with setting tool. Screw in 1/4-20 hex head machine screw with a couple of 1/4" washer. Tighten screws so face of metal anchor is flush with surface. The reason most anchors spin is lack of friction to expand them, not for strength. If in soft masonry simply cut the outer shell of metal anchor with hacksaw and trash center piece. Trim shell to width with tin snips. Drive in thinnest edge next to metal anchor if necessary. Screw in hex head bolt and washers and test. I believe a install drill should be a few thousands smaller in diameter but it is what it is. The larger hole should be about 1/8 deeper than the metal anchor's main body.
Bertha brand body I use is one inch so I drill main hole 1-1/8" deep to start the install.
This always works for me using the Bertha metal anchors from Lowe's. I put holes in cardboard so screws go all the way with no threads exposed. Spray paint heads. Make sure bolts are not too long or they will jack out anchors when tightened. Never mix zinc or plain washers with stainless. They corrode due to galvanic reaction. Off topic but never over tighten stainless to stainless. It cold welds and cant be removed without power tools.

Perfect example of a part manufactured to fail. They could easily make these pins out of something stronger but then they wouldn't be able to make money off of you every 5 years or so.

I used generic full thread screws from the hardware store. Make sure they are the right size for the anchors you purchase and I bought 2.50 long screws.

You may have to move the shutter over a little and add new holes. I’m not sure how you could get the old screws out.
Often they can be punched in to fall inside the wall. Try a round 1/4” punch and a hammer. There is a reason they are put up with plastic inserts, fast and easy to replace.
My shutters came loose when the plastic anchors either broke off or came out of brick during successive windy days. Thanks for vid and material list. I noticed that your listed washers were stainless but the screws were not. Have your sheet metal screws rusted since install (even with painting)? Any reason why not to use stainless screws? Thanks.
I haven’t had any issues with rust. Stainless is better but more expensive. I think the paint will suffice though.

Can I use the old tail of the plastic fastener in place and use that as anchor to hold the metal screw?
You can try but they are usually too brittle
I have to do that for one of my shutters. Only one screw out but looks like I better replace them all. How. Much does it cost to have someone do it generally cost ??
I have no idea what the cost would be. Cost would definitely vary by region. Any handyman could do it for you.
If the plastic shutter fasteners break off flush in the wall, just hit them with a blunt object, like a screw driver and hammer, and drive them into the cavity behind the brick. They fall inside and leave the hole unscathed. Takes 3 seconds each.
Then install wall anchors or new shutter fasteners in the existing hole. I've done the drill method (it works) but is a waste of time and energy, made worse if you are on a ladder. Good luck!
It really depends on if there is mortar or a stud behind it though. Works great when it isn’t blocked on the back.
The anchors you used in the video were blue in color, but the anchors you have posted for us to use are green !!! What size is the shutter hole?
I think they are 1/4” but I don’t recall.

There is no great way to do that. You can try to push the broken plug through into the hollow area and then slide a new one in.
How did you remove the shutter and original hardware?
Most of the time the shutters are already falling off.

Depends on your area really. I would probably charge $20 plus materials per shutter. If you have the rights tools already it’s a quick job.
why not just use an adhesive? the shutters don't get weighted down so no need for heavy anchoring...thoughts?
There isn’t much to adhere to on the shutters. They have a really thin side wall.
First off, I'm a woman! There, I said it and it does make a difference with the way we think. I was just wondering how an anchor would expand in concrete. I have a loose shutter that I don't think was attached correctly in the first place. The hole only goes about 1 inch into the concrete and the shutter screw is at least 5". Never noticed it being loose until birds started nesting behind it. I would love this permanent fix but just wondering about the anchor
Great question. The anchor hole is smaller than the screw so it has no choice but to expand to fill the hole as you insert the screw.

@@chuckdawg2799 It is just an inexpensive plastic drywall anchor and I’ve never had one fail. I’ve used the soft metal concrete anchors in the past but they don’t go in as easily and don’t hold as well.

I’m sorry! I totally misread your question. Haha. If you have the plastic fasteners like mine, you could just cut the heads off, remove the shutter, then try to pull the remainder of the fastener out with a pair of pliers.

I see your comment saying you used 2 1/2 inch screws but the parts list says 3 inch. Is the 3 inch too long when the shutters are about 3/4 inch thick?
Depends on which anchor you use.

hello, TightWadDIY, can we use tapcon 410 screws instead of plastic anchors? Here in East Coast moisture, wind and heat will not let plastic anchors last for long, imo
They would work great if they were thick enough. The problem is the holes for the previous anchors will be too large.

A honest contractor would run your materials and how ever much that comes out to they match that price for labor that’s fair
@@mikeowen5054 an honest contractor will provide cost estimates up front and talk through the job to establish expectations with their customer first. The idea that you can match labor costs to material costs doesn't work if you want quality workmanship. If 6 shutters cost $75 and it takes 3 hours of Labor to install them, one might think that $25 an hour would be sufficient. This is true if you're dealing with a Craigslist handyman who will disappear as soon as he's done with his job. If you want a reputable company that carries insurance and a warranty they're significantly more overhead than $25 an hour will cover.

Had to make the holes bigger for the ancors. And those darn 3 inch screws were flat head and were awful to drill!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@@lilmamma807 I wouldn't use foam. Consider the mess if someone ever wants to remove the shutters. What is your goal in sealing around them? I don't think its needed.

Those shutter should have had 6 screws and the one in the middle should have two on each side in a mortar joint. It looks really bad with that one screw in the middle of the shutter and you over tightened the one and the shutter looks sunk in at the middle point.

Drilling it is the WORST thing you can do - all you need to do is get a thin and long 2" or 3" long screw - and screw it onto the plastic insert that is stuck inside - it comes out like a charm, by simply pulling on the screw to get it out - You are welcome!

Why not just push the plastic anchors all the way through?
That isn’t always an option due to studs and mortar on the rear of the bricks.. It is nice when that works out though.
Looks horrible with screw heads showing. My existing shutters (that I need to replace) have no screws visible. This is the challenge…to figure out how they were originally installed. Not difficult to send screws through the shutter🤣

The screws were Phillips but they sent me slotted screws. It says on the advertisement Phillips. A violation of truth in advertisement.

Worlds cheapest shutters! Spend a few bucks and install some nice functional shutters. You'll get more views if you make them yourself. This way, you can still be a tightass! :-)

No point in taking them out.

Yeah if you're lazy but it's better to do the job right the first time just drill them out it don't take no time pop your anchors in and you're done
That's not doing the job wrong to leave them in. And it's not being lazy. The only thing the plastic concrete anchor is doing is filling up the hole enough that when you drill the screw in it expands and makes a tight fit.
That's why you can use zip ties even wood if you don't have anchors on hand.
Shutters come with screws not anchors.
Some people use adhesive when they put the shutter plugs in, so it could take longer than a second to use an anchor.
I used this method on replacing my 26 shutters and they are all in and holding.
I used anchors on ones that came out but like I said some had adhesive in them and there is nothing wrong with screwing right into the old plug.
I heard that you aren't supposed to screw into masonry as it may destroy the brick. And that the shutters are made with the plastic to easily pop off if the wind catches them...do you have any comment about destroying the brick?? I'm thinking this may be the only con/risk and should still proceed with replacing brick with mason anchors??
I’m not worried about destroying the brick. You are screwing into the anchors, not into the brick.

This guy was REINSTALLING the same shutters so he drilled no holes except the existing holes.
This was NOT an install.

They come with six long anchors never drill into the mortor!!!!! You drill into brick. Morton is not stable! I'd watch many videos before making my choices. Everyone has different ideas.
You really don’t have a choice when doing this repair unless you buy a new shutter.
