Plantation shutters are great because they're inside the home, and they're easy to operate. But, plantation shutters are prone to getting broken! This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to fix Plantation Shutters for just $4, specifically by repairing a broken louver pin on a shutter slat.

FIX BROKEN PLANTATION SHUTTER HOW-TO:
1) Order replacement louver pins for your plantation shutters.
2) Try to pick out bits of broken wooden down with a utility knife.
3) If that doesn't work, use a drill and a 1/8" drill bit to bore out the pieces of dowel still lodged in the plantation shutter (both the "stile" upright piece, and the shutter slat).
4) When the dowel is bored out of the plantation shutter stile and louver slat, insert the replacement spring-loaded shutter pin into the stile.
5) Depress the shutter pin with a 5-in-1 painters tool, or a flat knife.
6) Raise the louvered slat until the spring-loaded pin pops into the hole.
7) Move adjuster rod up and down to make sure slat is set in plantation shutters.
8) If the adjuster rod is failing to move certain slats, tip the adjuster rod to the side and replace staples in planation shutter.

Outstanding! I can now repair 6 slats that have been broken for years…
Perfect video, exactly what I needed to repair the slat, used a slim credit card and it worked a treat 👍 thank you!
Thank you so much!!! I’ve tried unsuccessfully on our one blind that’s been broken for a year. Turning the middle rod is so easy - and seems so obvious in hindsight!
Very easy fix to a pretty common problem. I've tried a few different things over the years but this seems like the best option. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Brent!
Thanks you very much.I repaired all my shutters. This video is very helpful.🙏🙏🙏
Thank you! My slat wasn't broken but had come loose on one side, I had no idea that the pin could be pushed in. So glad I didn't try to force it and end up breaking the pin or the slat. Thank you :)
Thank you for the help. I as dreading the job, but you made it easy.😀
Thanks for the video. Exactly what I was looking for!
I didn't know that part replacement existed. Thank you!
Yes this very helpful to me. Thank u ☺️👍
First!!! Thank you for taking the time to make this video, 2nd thing is I have some plantation shutter that are made of plastic… how can I fix a few blades that have become detached from the middle rod that controls the louvre (open closes)??? I hope I explained it well enough to understand
Thank you Janet
Good info, thanks. Staples and spring dowels are available in a kit, and comes with a small tube of super glue.
Thanks for the heads up Norm! I’ll link a kit if I can find one
What a great invention!
Thank you!!!! I was trying to figure this out without calling in a repairman.
Thanks for posting this came in real handy!
Thanks. Quick and simple. 😊
Thanks for the tip. Works great!
You just saved my life. Thank you!
Awesome video! Thank you 😊
Thanks for this tip.
What about the metal staple that holds the shutter to the wooden stick(don’t know the proper word but hope u understand ),how do u fix that?
Same problem here; there must be a special tool to use???
Exactly! Who can answer this question? With a house full of teenagers, I've got several that need to be fixed now. Help!
I’ve never done this, but looking at the staples. Looks like it slides over the little louver and into the wood slats, and that’s how it works. Unless you have a different system. I’ve seen them held together with tiny eye hook type things you screw into the slats and louver stick thing. This was years ago, so it’s a bit foggy remembering.
How do you repair the slat when the center staple is broken off or the wood is cracked ?
Thank you for the information!
Your videos are always good
Thank you Konstantinus!
Thank you!!! So helpful!!
great video short and sweet
Amazing thank you!!!!! I thought I was going to have to buy brand new ones and was so bummed! Can I order new slats and the sticks that pull them up and down?
Also mine have plastic in the middle not a staple so I’m wondering how that could work.
Thanks so much!
Wow! And to think I almost took mine down, in to a dealer to replace part, bc HUNTER DOUGLAS will send replacement part (.40), but NOT cover any service costs, etc!! Lifesaver, thank you so much!! Glad I googled first!
Glad it helped, CDCF! 😄
@@TheHonestCarpenter great video!!! I need to replace the slats, any suggestions where I can find them?
How do you repair the part that connects to the rod?
Thank you!
AWESOME! Thanks:)
Use same size or just size down and glue if to big
I have old nice shutters in a location that I would like to remove and install them in a different location.
I don’t mind to install them over the window opening if they don’t measure the same.
Is there a way that we could salvage the shutters and building a new frame ? If so whom should I hire ?
Thank you,
Amy
Does it work for when they break off but just spin in place?
Considering the ridiculous high cost of plantation shutters, it begs the question why these pins aren't used in the first place?
What Sheen of white paint are these plastic shutters? I need to do some touch-up paint on one. Thank you.
Such useful information, what a great channel.
Thank you, Lynda!
The Honest Carpenter TY Honest Carpenter love your videos.
What would you recommend to fix slats that don't move easily anymore?
Thank you thank you thank you I love you man
Everyone always says click the link below I can’t find a link to get these little clips
Hi thank you for this but don’t see link
How is the center rod plastic puns repaired?
Thank you so muchhhhh
Thank you! :)))
My staples are broken and the staple on the rod are bent, how can I fix it???
What about the middle vertical piece that opens and closes the slats? What if that is broken?
Hi I've got these as room dividers, but they are fixed shut. I've broken a few, do you have any idea how to get them back into the frame. If you can picture this, the slats are fixed into a long chiselled out vertical groove and it's difficult to get them back in. Would love to hear from anyone. Thanks
What about if the slat itself is damaged and needs to be replaced...? Do companies sell individual slats ...? Do you think I could contact the company who my parents bought them from and who installed them sells replacement slats?
Hi love the video and very helpful. My issue is that the wooden slat has also splintered. Can these be replaced as well?
I have the same question!
Thank you, I just broke mine. Just ordered on amazon.
What do you do if they are so loose that they don’t stay closed?
Good video and hope it works. BUT my pins have a much smaller hole in the slat and the frame these wont fit and I cant find the smaller ones. The angle prevents redrilling the holes. Any source for the smaller ones?
Right?!
What about the metal staple make a video on that
My slats have tiny 3.5mm pins, and they're equal size on both sides, so unfortunately this doesn't work for me :(
Thanks don’t see what he link for the retractable pins from Amazon. Please post that. Thanks!
Links are down in the description, Grace! I just double checked 🙂
👍
