Microtech Ultratech: Field Test

  • An Air Force aircrew member takes the Microtech Ultratech into the back country to see how it would perform if his plane went down. Out-the-front knives are pretty hip and cool. We wanted to know if they're hip, cool AND functional for someone on the job in the military. Jaime was going to film himself using the knife during a recent tour in Afghanistan, but for security reasons, he wasn't able to. Instead, we headed into the Utah backcountry to see how the knife performed.

    Just wanna say that those detents are really made for tempered glass. I work at a glass shop and regular glass can be broken by anything but tempered is actually hard to break. That detent punctures the surface and it shatters into like a million pieces. Keep up the good work tho guys

      These knives are made for piercing flesh/self defence. Buy a cheaper, sturdy, non-mechanical knife if you want a reliable survival knife. Who buys a $400 mechanical knife for camping/outdoor survival? I do understand that this is an emergency situation scenario, so i get the point they're trying to make.

      Ben Barth LOL this is such typical aircrew. They normally would have flame resistant gloves on. Also he tried to break through a mason jar, those things are tempered, that's why he had an issue. And any aircrewmen should have a small go bag, with a fixed blade. Batoning a $300 microtech? This guy lol. God bless and thanks for your service.

    I love knives, but I need to clarify some things because seeing this video sorta annoys. I'm an aircrew member in the USMC and I own this knife. I can personally tell you that the idea of getting out of an aircraft with the glass breaker is just far fetched. Mostly due to the 12 emergency exits that you will have the opportunity to use, including swing windows in the flight station. You'll never be in a situation where you'll crash and be trapped in a seatbelt. You have to survive the crash first, good luck with that, and seatbelts on C-130s (And almost every single cargo airplane) are literally just quick release and should be adjusted tight to your body. I will tell you that the only time I ever found this knife to be useful on an aircraft is when you airdrop CDS bundles, heavy equipment, etc. and have to cut line. Even then though, the line will have so much tension that a butter knife could cut through it, the ultratech was sorta comforting because I could just push the blade out with one hand and cut it fast, then close the blade just as fast without slowing down so I can roll into our next checklist faster and in a safer manner. The blade is nice in the fact that it doesn't wear very easily and I've never had it jammed, but I take good care of my knives too so that may play a part in it.

    I tried to find one that had serrations on just one side but couldnt sadly so I just got a straight edge dagger. Which I keep my knives razor sharp anyway so cutting a belt wont be an issue regardless. But still I would have loved one that was serrations on the top and a straight edge on the bottom. It just makes sense way more sense than the combo edge on both sides...

    The strength of the locks on these knives is unbelievable to me. The fact that even a $30 lightning OTF can withstand stabbing thick wood without failing is insane. I don't know how much force it can withstand, but in order for the lock to fail, you'd probably be using enough force to slip past the handle and onto the blade... Meaning it surely goes through bones and serves as an excellent self defense knife.

    • @mackhomie6
      @mackhomie6 4 года назад

      Which is shocking when you see the internals. The thing that catches the blade in the open/closed positions is the smallest thinnest piece of plastic you ever saw. It's the same on a lightning as it is an ultratech
