This is another example of THEY CAN DO ANYTHING! This is the only time they ever had another singer!

Another beautiful & different song by them, they keep newbies surprised. This is the only time there’s another singer, outside of the band. Sandy Denny sounds so beautiful, & their vocals together are so perfect.

Great reaction video, man. Those vocals are Robert Plant, with Sandy Denny singing backup vocals. Great song.

It was more a 'call and resonse' duet she was singing rather than 'back up vocals'.

@ NOT RECORDING THIS SONG!!! During live performances JPJ did play the mandolin, but on the album Page played it. It was the first time Jimmy ever played one.

  • @pixelrancher

Jimmy Page picked up John Paul Jones's mandolin and started to play it, having never played a mandolin before. The entire song was written in one sitting.
Sandy Denny on backing vocals, was the lead singer of the British folk rock band Fairport Convention.
She was also with the band, the Strawbs (as was keyboardist Rick Wakeman who became a member of the group YES.) While with the Strawbs, John Paul Jones played bass on their first album.

A modern tune that sounds like it could have been written 1000 years ago.
Notice the many references to Lord of the Rings novels. Ring Wraths ride in Black... ride on...

Jimmy, having never played the mandolin before, picked it up and wrote the song out in one sitting, chords and all. That should tell you the level of brilliance of the band. And this, of course, isn't the only song where this happened. Stairway to Heaven was done just as quickly, as well as many other songs, many of which were just jams the band had done before, and one day the band decides to use a riff or something and build a song right there on the spot. Keep in mind that they'd do this live and in concert too, improvising as they went. If you want your mind blown as to the level of genius of the band, listen to the live version of Dazed and Confused from the live album Song Remains the Same. The first time I saw it was in the theater, and when the song was done, I sat with jaw agape, mesmerized by the sheer volume of genius I saw displayed that day. Their genius could actually be exhausting, I found out. Good stuff.

Yep...not Robert Plant. It is Sandy Denny. I think this is the only song they ever did where they had a guest backup singer. It was a great choice. This is my favorite Zeppelin song.

I’m with you, man. I dig their ass kickin’ bluesy, rock side better. No doubt. But it’s cool they do their weird ass, nerdy, wizard, Lord of the Rings stuff too. Probably because I’m a dorky, weird ass, nerdy LOTR, fool too. 😂🤣

  • @heliotropezzz333

It's not 'back up vocals' by Sandy Denny (RIP). It's more of a call and response duet. Robert thought it would not make sense to sing both the call and response elements himself and it would be better to have a second singer to sing the response. Who better than Sandy Denny? She was the only singer from outside of the band to appear on an LZ album

I used to FF this song on cassette in the 89s, but I was a young idiot. I used to blow right past some of Led Zeps best songs. Young and stupid….now old and appreciative.

Only a couple times did they ever play with another musician...never with another singer. Any backing vocals in other songs were either Robert with 2 tracks or Jimmy on a couple and John Bonham! Bonham did backing vocals in performances and he has a really good voice!

"Celtic" is pronounced with a hard C (sounds like K), as if you were saying "Candy". Celtic is an adjective -- relating to the Celts or their languages, which constitute a branch of the Indo-European family and include Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Manx, Cornish, and several extinct pre-Roman languages such as Gaulish.
