Supposedly, this movie is the Coen Brothers take on a famous Raymond Chandler mystery novel, “The Big Sleep” which was made into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
It was legendary for being convoluted and almost impossible to follow, but very atmospheric. This is the Coen Brothers stoner version of the same story.

Agreed. With as many times as i've seen it there are just small parts where the acting stands out. Like pretty much every single scene with Seymour-Hoffman. Even things as little as Jeff Bridges when he's told her life is in your hands. Idk why but his acting in that scene is perfect to me.

"Donnie" was in Fargo just before this movie, in which his character just would not shut up. That's why he was in this one, and why Walter kept telling him to shut up.
It also explains why Donnie had to die. :)

Fantastic movie. Even the smallest role is written so well, so many great and unique characters. About Donny: Never missed a strike. Except the last one. Something was off then already, he felt something in his arm after the missed shot. A sign of an upcoming heart attack.

The genius in this movie are all the countless little details that continue to pop up on subsequent viewings. Like the fact that Donnie's shirt and pants in the beginning are an exact color match of the seats in the bowling alley. He is such a wall flower that he literally blends in with the furniture. Another example is how the dog is running away in the background when Walter is taking the carrier back to the car when the police arrive. I don't think I spotted that until maybe my third viewing. The Coen brothers are the greatest living directors alive, IMO.

The Coens mostly do two kinds of films - noirish crime films and zany comedies. Big Lebowski is unique in that it is a zany comedy that parodies the noir crime novels of Raymond Chandler (and the films based on them like The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye). The other film that stands out as not being in either category is A Serious Man - which is amusing but hardly zany.

This film was part of a 3-film trilogy by the Coen Brothers, focusing on different parts of the US. This was LA; Fargo was the upper Midwest; and Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou was the deep south. The actor who played Donnie, and the one who played the pornstar/nihilist are central figures in Fargo. The actor who played Donnie in this one had so many lines in Fargo that the Coen Brothers decided to fix that in this one with Donnie getting told to Shut The *F* Up all the time. The actor who played Walter has a central scene in Oh, Brother--also a hilarious movie.

I will admit that I do not typically watch discussions after movie reactions. I tend to lose interest after a minute or two if that. I can't even tell you exactly what makes me tend to stick around for your guys discussions except that maybe it just feels so genuine and it doesn't go on for too long. I checked this one and saw it was roughly six minutes but it felt like just a few. So even though I can't really articulate it I wanted to share it with you that even someone like me who often skips these parts I find yours to be entertaining. And by the way that was David Thewlis (Professor Lupin). I was glad you caught that. When I first saw The Big Lebowski I didn't know who he was and it wasn't until I rewatched Lebowski some years after the Harry Potter series that I recognized him. I originally knew David Thewlis in Dragonheart (1996). Which is a nostalgic movie for me but one that I now as an adult look back on as a somewhat mediocre script but surprisingly has a stellar cast including the ironic pairing of Thewlis with Jason Isaacs! It was super surreal seeing Lupin and Lucius together in Dragonheart since I saw Dragonheart first and didn't make the connection of the actors until many years later. Anyways, I have rambled enough. I really enjoyed this reaction and so far have enjoyed all of your channel's reactions. Thank you guys sincerely for the entertainment.

What if the Terminator was played by and written for Steve Buscemi, or The Godfather was written with Danny DeVito in mind?
A theme that ties a lot of Coen Brothers movies together is that they pick a genre (a film noir detective story in this case) and people it with ordinary schlubs for characters, folks who aren't as smart/clever/sure-footed as typical movie characters would be. The Dude is placed in the role of Phillip Marlowe, but he is too laid back to care about being Phillip Marlowe.
From their first film, Blood Simple, to Hudsucker Proxy to Raising Arizona to Fargo to the Big Lebowski to O Brother Where Art Thou to Burn After Reading to No Country for Old Men, the Coen's have presented us with Protagonists and Antagonists who are mostly in over their heads.

I’m still convinced that The Stranger (Sam Elliott) is some sort of heavenly being, perhaps one of the angelic hierarchy, who has been in observation of The Dude. I take comfort in knowing that The Dude has a sort of guardian angel.
Of course he could be nothing more than the narrator. But then why call him The Stranger in the credits. Maybe a reference to Camus and his novel of the same name. An exploration of absurdism. One could certainly argue that the characters in this movie define absurdism, the seeking of a meaning in life and finding none, leading to the question of what do we do with this life.
That’s what makes this movie so damn good. On its face it’s a heck of a comedy noir. But under the surface the Coens explore all kinds of themes. It’s a masterpiece.

    $1,000,000 in $20 dollar bills? A $20 bill weight = 1 gram, 454 grams to 1 pound
    1,000,000 / 20 / 454 = 110 pounds. Of course that will fit into a little brief case?
They must be using DUDE math. 🤔🤨💸💸💸💸💸

I love that the whole story was a big nothing burger. An issue of a debt that had nothing to do with The Dude, a kidnapping that wasn't real, fake kidnappers, a fake rich man, ransom money that never existed, and yet somehow The Dude was wrapped up in it all. Incredible.
He really was the type of person for his time and place. If anyone else had been in that role, this story might not have resolved in such a nothing way. Everyone wanted to take advantage of The Dude, but he was just too laid back to let them get to him.

There were a lot of "screwball" comedies in the 90s with one character who would say nothing the entire movie and then end up saving the day. Killing Donny off so unceremoniously was sort of a joke on that. It's pretty dark and doesn't always land with everyone, but it's actually pretty funny if you have the context.

The tv edit for this is hilarious. "Do you see what happens Larry when you face a stranger in the Alps!" BTW my wife and I just watched Tim Burtons Batman (1989) last night and Kylie looks a heck of a lot like Kim Basinger did in that film.

A lot of the humor in this movie comes from the fact that the Coen Brothers envisioned this as a private eye/Raymond Chandler/Sam Spade/Humphrey Bogart noir & then created the most inept, least competent, stoner slacker as the leading character. Careful, man, there's a beverage involved here!!
