"When the Levee Breaks" was written in the 1930s by two black blues singers, Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy. Originally LZ did not credit it properly. This was a problem with a number of their earlier albums, especially Led Zeppelin 1. The song was written to commemorate the great Mississippi River flood of 1927, when the rain just wouldn't stop. Poor black sharecroppers of the Mississippi delta were hit hard when levees failed or were intentionally breeched to protect up river towns (mostly white). When this album first came out I wondered why an English rock group would write a song about levees breaking, when England really doesn't have levees. And how Chicago made it into a song by some Brits as well. It was all made clear later. But the arrangement is all LZ. This is part of what makes them not properly crediting songs hard to understand. Doing new arrangements of songs is a respected thing in music. There are classical pieces where the most famous version is a rearrangement by a second artist. Rock is full of them. One of the most famous is Hendrix's arrangement of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," which is by far the most well known version. Another is Santana's "Black Magic Woman," which was originally written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. Again, Santana's is the one most people know. The Animals' cover of "House of the Rising Sun" is another, and there are many more.
Yes, times were different 50 years ago. Today, you can’t even use a 3 second sample of music without going through a major process. Both Plant, and Page have repeatedly acknowledged their love for Delta Blues, and have excessively expressed their influences, of all generes of music they sang. 50 years ago, things were different.
Led Zeppelin 4 is one of the Greatest Rock Albums of All Time. This ,The "White Abum" by The Beatles and "The Dark Side of The Moon" by Pink Floyd are classics that have stood the test of time. They all sound so good, still fresh after 40-50 years of my listening to them.
There is not a bad song on this album, every song different, every song a work of musical art, a true Masterpiece. Great Reaction from you, liked and subscribed !
Misty Mountain Hop is a reference to The Lord of The Rings (books by J.R.R. Tolkien, movies by Peter Jackson), The Battle of Evermore has another reference to The Lord of The Rings, " The Ringwraiths ride in black. I think there are also references to the books in the song "Ramble On".
you might not get it now, but the more you listen to stairway, you will understand that it is the greatest song to ever be written. everything about it is perfect, along with this album
I’m not even kidding every time I hear that guitar solo I feel like crying. The first time I listened to it I teared up. I’m only 27 but there’s something nostalgic and reminiscing about it idk why
Four Sticks, drummer John Bonham played with 2 sticks in each hand, his frustration trying to play this is how we got Rock & Roll. Bonham took a break from playing it, & started pounding out Rock & Roll, & the others joined in improvising. They were still recording when this took place, so a happy accident, Rock & Roll was then the opener for many concerts.
@ he is considered one of the greatest drummers ever, & by many millions THE GOD OF DRUMS, including me. After that break, he went back & they got the song in one take. Highly recommend watching his 15 minute solo, from The Royal Albert Hall (1970), called Moby Dick. That concert gives the best views of him playing, he also plays with his hands. He performed that solo over 200 times, at some point of nonstop 3 to 4 hour concert. Sadly the band split up in (1980) following Bonham’s death, because the other knew they could never replace their friend, & the master musician he was. I’d say a skill not many could accomplish.
@@SolarMusicZ He was doing something out of his comfort zone which is how you gain skills...he just got frustrated. Since he finally got it down as evidenced here, he clearly does not have a skill issue.
You are absolutely correct. The first 3 albums were blues based, and were some covers of old blues songs, but starting with 4, they started writing and rocking harder blended with songs that were influenced by English folk songs, and it gets better still.
Stairway to Heaven has long been considered the #1 song on most rock & roll stations. It's topped the KISW Top 1000 here in Seattle for many many years.
It always blows my mind when someone says Stairway to Heaven & I know they’ve never heard it… So exciting watching people listen to classic songs like this for the 1st time✌🏻
When The Levee breaks, John Bonham’s drumming for this is the most sampled drumming. The guys were staying at an old Estate called Headley Grange, eating sleeping writing freezing & playing music. Bonham’s drum kit was set up in the 3 story open entrance to the Estate, the natural acoustics & strategically placed mics made it a deep rich sound. Others have tried copying it, some even trying it at Headley Grange, what was missing was the greatest drummer ever John Henry (Bonzo) Bonham. Thank you for another great album reaction, I hope you continue on this amazing journey.
I saw a T-shirt recently that made me go, oh yeah! It said "The fact that there is a Stairway To Heaven and a Highway To Hell, gives an indication as to expected traffic volume". Word !!

Love the reaction Stair way to Heaven possibly the greatest rock and roll song ever and one of the Finest albums by Zeppelin for the most part their songs sound different with different styles
Stairway to Heaven is considered the best song in the history of classic rock and is one of the most popular songs of all time and one of the most played on the radio. It meant a lot for the overall success of Led Zeppelin.
Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The band comprised Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass and keyboards) and John Bonham (drums). With a heavy, guitar-driven sound and drawing from influences including blues and folk music, Led Zeppelin are cited as a progenitor of hard rock and heavy metal. They significantly influenced the music industry, particularly in the development of album-oriented rock and stadium rock.
Stairway To Heaven is the most requested & most popular song in music history. Still after over 50 years, this song still is number one on countdown lists, of even 500 songs. On the 4th of July weekend (2024) countdown, it was number one once again. It’s beautiful & I love it’s as many do, but Led Zeppelin have other masterpieces too, some maybe even better. You young man need to checkout their live performances, because they often are even better then the studio versions. They do improvisation in concert, any song is never done the same twice. So many aspects of Led Zeppelin, is why they are the greatest band ever, their absolute brilliance. Hard pressed to find a song that’s not great, you’ll just love some more then others.
By the time I graduated HS in 1979 I had played Stairway so many times on guitar with my band I never wanted to hear it again! 😅 It’s crazy that at 63 I have several guitars here in my living room, watching this, and I can still play that song in my sleep. He is going to love Physical Graffiti!
@ I graduated in 1979 too, yes it was so over played. I got to where I didn’t really like it so much, watching the live & these reactions, made me love it again.
4 was my favorite for a long time but I’ve got to agree, Houses of The Holy is better. The variety of genres is exceptional and The Ocean is my favorite Zep tune.
Led Zeppelin's seminal 1971 classic 'Stairway To Heaven' has been named as the UK's favourite rock anthem. The prog-rock epic is one of three Led Zep songs to make it into the top ten in a listeners' poll conducted by radio station Absolute Classic Rock. The top ten was as follows: 1. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin 2. Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who 3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen 4. Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin 5. Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple 6. Baba O'Riley - The Who 7. Rock 'n' Roll - Led Zeppelin 8. All Right Now - Free 9. Revolution - The Beatles 10. Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones

Man that's a Cracker, that one takes me straight back to my Friday nights, amphetamine fuelled teenage 70s , but my favourite as a whole Lp after all my decades of loving this band, sorry to say it but it's gotta be 'The Soft Parade ', I know it's not a popular choice but f*ck me it's so good!!..
You asked at the end if "he" has dropped anything recently. There's no "he", but this band of 4 musical prodigies recorded Led Zep I in 1968 and their last album around 1978 or 1979. Following the last album, John Bonham, the God of the drums passed away. That led to the band calling it quits. They did other projects individually but the surviving 3 members never got back together. Plant and Page did maybe 2 reunion concerts. You can see all 3 survivors in their old age attending the "Kennedy Center Honors" which they were awarded 10-15 years ago. An incredible assemblage of great artists from all walks of music, and celebrities including then President Barack Obama and Michelle. There is a now legendary video that every Zep fan has seen over and over of the rock band Heart covering "Stairway" backed by an orcchestra, full choir, and a bundle of other musicians. Zeppelin is watching from the balcony and is moved to tears and laughter. John Bonham's son Jason sits in to play the drums and honor his late father. So f'ing moving is this! Catch up to this one Bro!!!! Look for "Heart - Stairway to Heaven".
Robert Plant has been touring, and recording. He won Grammys for Raising Sand and Please Read the Letter with Alison Krauss in 2009, and had nominations, sone as recently as 2023.
It's all good. They're all amazing. But the drums😮 more technique on the hi-hat in one album than most drummers do ever. And he didn't even go 'pss, pss' a single time. 🥁 thank you sir. That was fun.
"Stairway To Heaven" is more than THE anthem of the whole rock history, it's THE revelation at all. I gave them my soul when I was sixteen and now they are not going to give it me back.
Stairway to heaven is the most requested songs of all time. Only a few other bands, reached the level and standards of this record finish the rest of Led Zeppelin record.😎👍🤘🇺🇸

The picture on the cover of Led Zeppelin's 1971 album Led Zeppelin IV is a photograph of Lot Long, a 19th-century thatcher from Mere, Wiltshire, England: Photographer Ernest Farmer took the photograph in 1892. Discovery The identity of the man was revealed by Brian Edwards, a historian at the University of the West of England, after he discovered an original copy of the image in auction house news releases. Band members Robert Plant and Jimmy Page found a colorized copy of the photo in an antique shop in Reading, England. They decided to use the image on the album cover to contrast the modern skyscraper on the back with the old man with the sticks. Symbolism The cover was intended to bring out a city/country dichotomy and to remind people to look after the Earth.
I just Marathon watched Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, And Led Zeppelin I, II III and IV. Subscribed. I enjoy listening to the albums on your channel and enjoying the music with somebody who appreciates it with an open mind. You do some comments and pauses, but just the right amount for the right reasons without breaking up the flow. Well done. Subscribed.
When the Levee Breaks is actually an old blues song from down in the southern delta by a brotha from Mississippi I believe like way way back in the day
When the levee breaks is actually an old Blues song. Lot of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon peppered throughout Zeppelin's repertoire. John Campbell made a great slide guitar cover of the Led Zeppelin version and Stanley Jordan's two guitars rendition of Stairway is worth watching. Parts sound familiar to you? Wait till you listen to Kashmir! They're all good but judging by the swinging webcam Rock & Roll is your favorite, man. 😄 PS - The dude is carrying a bushel of firewood. Either he wants to keep warm or burn someone at the stake.
omg, I miss John Bonham so much when I hear this. He was an incredibly powerful drummer. I'm so glad we have Page, Plant and Jones still with us. Check out Obama's tribute to Led Zepplin...it's so great to hear their music presented to them as the honored guests and let them just soak it all in. I love how you're digging this ! It does sound better on vinyl btw. I have all of it on cd and there's no comparison to vinyl and a nice sound system.
The peasant on the album cover has a bundle of long sticks on his back. It was colorized from the original. TRIVIA::: "(been a long time) ROCK n ROLL" was the very first record played on the show MTV The DRUMMER really kicks it on every song RIP John Bonham I know his son is doing him proud
My favorite Led Zeppelin album and one of my top albums of all time. Amazing lyrics and music top to bottom. Led Zeppelin II is close but this is just too good.
The cover image is an old guy carrying a bundle of sticks on his back (firewood or whatever), that bundle is (was) called a 'fag' of sticks. One of their best albums. all great songs every one of them.
Thanks bro. You made me feel really old with this one, lol. Not your fault. Fact is, I actually am old. And it's just hard to accept the fact that younger folks don't know this music. 10 or 15 years ago you'd be hard-pressed to find anybody who wouldn't recognize the title Stairway to Heaven if you asked them. But I'm not mad at you for not knowing it, it's simply a matter of time just passing. Things that are cemented into the conscience of popular culture will eventually fade over time. That's the case here. I appreciate the fact that you actually recognized it as a great song though. Enjoying your journey through these albums of different artists. Really looking forward to Physical Graffiti, my personal favorite Zeppelin album. Keep up the good work. By the way, is there anyone in here who speaks Boomer and can translate "no cap" into my generation? Would be much appreciated, lol. Peace my man, Hope you and yours have a great Thanksgiving. ✌🏻
When this album was released was just after "The Summer of Love", the sound of two San Francisco based bands, Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead were leading the charge of The Free Love and Hippie Culture movements. Psychedelic Folk-Rock, tie-dyed clothing, plenty of Weed and LSD and Magic Mushrooms. What a time to grow up in. Civil Rights movement, Protests to the Vietnam War.
"to be a rock and not to roll" from stairway to heaven is one of the hardest lines I've ever heard and something I've thought about throughout my life. "Misty mountain hop" reminds me of my college years. Driving to San Fransisco on a whim, smoking a blunt with my friends and spending the day with no set plan in the city... Not in the 70's lol but in the early 2000's. (This music and vibe transcends generations and eras)
Still one of the greatest albums of all time🎉
The greatest.
Actually not.
My cool Aunt bought me Led Zep 4 on Cassette for Xmas when I was 9.

HOUSES OF THE HOLY NEXT
Can't Wait! 🥰🐰
A MUST watch!
It's all good. They're all amazing. But the drums😮 more technique on the hi-hat in one album than most drummers do ever. And he didn't even go 'pss, pss' a single time. 🥁 thank you sir. That was fun.
The ending bonham triplet bit at the end of rock and roll absolutely rips
Your stairway is paid for, bro! You know what you need to do. The best reaction!
"Stairway To Heaven" is more than THE anthem of the whole rock history, it's THE revelation at all.
I gave them my soul when I was sixteen and now they are not going to give it me back.
Am I the only one to notice how well your channel is moving up towards 100K
Well done. Oh yeah! oh yeah!
Stairway to heaven is the most requested songs of all time. Only a few other bands, reached the level and standards of this record finish the rest of Led Zeppelin record.😎👍🤘🇺🇸
Going to Cali. He is singing about hippie girls of 1967. The year of the flower child

This is the first time I've watched a true first reaction to Stairway To Heaven! 😮
The picture on the cover of Led Zeppelin's 1971 album Led Zeppelin IV is a photograph of Lot Long, a 19th-century thatcher from Mere, Wiltshire, England:
Photographer
Ernest Farmer took the photograph in 1892.
Discovery
The identity of the man was revealed by Brian Edwards, a historian at the University of the West of England, after he discovered an original copy of the image in auction house news releases.
Band members
Robert Plant and Jimmy Page found a colorized copy of the photo in an antique shop in Reading, England. They decided to use the image on the album cover to contrast the modern skyscraper on the back with the old man with the sticks.
Symbolism
The cover was intended to bring out a city/country dichotomy and to remind people to look after the Earth.
hold off on that trip to Cali
#1: You & your channel are Fire, man!!! I'm not lying, I think you're going places, cuz of you totally Getting it from beginning to end!!🤗
Led Zep 4 is in the top ten of every critic, journalist and rock musician of all time!
Think about it. These guys had 4 albums written--produced--recorded and on the airways by 1971.
WE WEREN'T EVEN DIGITAL then!!
Well done. Subscribed.
When the Levee Breaks is actually an old blues song from down in the southern delta by a brotha from Mississippi I believe like way way back in the day
Battle of Evermore is a masterclass in English folk !It should be our national anthem !
PS - The dude is carrying a bushel of firewood. Either he wants to keep warm or burn someone at the stake.
F YEA!!! Bruvman **Keep GOING!!!** Cuz YOU **ROCK HARD** Weeeeeeeee **Luvin** these **Reactions** Bruvman **No Cap**
omg, I miss John Bonham so much when I hear this.
I still cry when I hears this music !! It is so beautiful & magical, 55 + plus years later !! Geniuses, everyone of these men !!
Can't wait to see you reacting to the 5th album.
Black dog has been played 500 million times, how any hasn't heard it is shocking
I'm 65 so I'm old too 😊
Great evolution of a band not wanting to labelled heavy but they could anytime
You should totally listen to the entire pulse-pink floyd live album
I went to the San Francisco area once in 1989.....it was beautiful....
The Piper's calling you to join him. ❤
Welcome to the 60's ladies and gents.
Houses of the Holy next for sure!
Highly recommend reacting to some Phish if you haven’t heard them before. Check out ANYTHING live…”Run like an Antelope” from 6/19/12 is a good start
