I'm a 58yo man, in 1977 @ 11yo I purchased 4 KISS albums (8 Track tapes) after making money from mowing grass and delivering newspapers. I have been hooked since that day.
I love when someone gives KISS credit that is deserved, specially someone who knows what they are talking about. Myself, I'm not a musician or singer, but I know I love KISS music.
Gene always got allot of slack for being just a bass player in the band, but this dude was on high heels, jumping around, and did not miss a single note!
Always more KISS reactions, please, ‘cause I love it loud. You got nothin’ to lose. Don’t make us wait 100,000 years. The fans really lick it up. KISS is larger than life even if their critics claim they hit rock bottom. Doesn’t shock me. KISS never had great expectations for critics, anyway. Do you know what you dig up when you hit rock bottom? A black diamond. So more KISS reactions, please, and shout it out loud!
It would be tough to name a more underrated drummer than Peter Criss. Like the others in KISS, his musicianship was dismissed because of the theatrics, but he had some serious chops in the early days. His roots were in jazz and r&b, and he even studied briefly under Gene Krupa. Listen to KISS Alive to hear more of him from that era, at his -- and their -- peak.
The fingerprints of Bill Aucoin, Neil Bogart and espicially Sean Delaney on the KISS presentation can not de dismissed. Delaney's choreography and little tricks such as Paul "fluffing" his hair with his hand (after seeing Paul scratch his head), amazing. KISS fans get it. Non KISS fans do not. Simple as that. We watch because we get it. And now you do also. Congrats bro and LISTEN TO DAD!! Haha. Many thanks for this.
Awesome. Hardcore Kiss fan here. I love to see people respond to Kiss who never saw or paid them any attention. The videos you have seen here are from 75. Check out I Stole Your Love 1977 Largo.
Nobody can touch this s*** this is mind-blowing early kiss kicks everybody's ass . This is why Black Sabbath didn't want to kiss back on tour with them.
Deuce was the first KISS song I ever heard, when my uncle played it for me in 1973-74 .. and I've been a huge fan ever since!! This is one of those songs that when it comes on in my truck, I am in serious danger of receiving a speeding ticket!!
In my opinion, Deuce is the greatest opening song ever. I saw them in '96 on the reunion tour, and they opened with Deuce, I lost my mind and I was a kid again.
Bill Aucoin was KISS' first manager. Bill began taping rehearsals, and his partner, Sean Delaney began to notice short moments where two guys would be in sync. Sean began to choreograph these moments with the band as they rehearsed. Sean would play back rehearsal tapes and perform the moves he wanted the band to do either in-sync or individually to correspond to their characters. The back and forth synchronized rocking, Gene's slow arm movements with a crooked hand to look demonic, Paul putting his guitar between his legs as an innuendo, Ace pointing to his guitar neck as he does pull-offs so they look ethereal and almost telekinetic are all the brain children of Sean Delaney.
Been a fan of Kiss since 1975 when my brother and I discovered Alive at the record store, to this day the first 3 albums and Alive are my favorite era of Kiss. I'm glad to hear a fellow musician give compliments not only to their music but their performance as well, they were top showman!
Kiss compositions are better than 90% of the stuff out there today. That's for sure. Not every musician makes it big obviously, and not every musician that does well is actually that talented. Kiss found a niche' and ran with it. Hard rocking, shocking appearance and fun stage show. Adrenaline filled, testosterone inspired Rock. This early Kiss got me through my teen years in the 1970's. Here's a shocker... back in those days girls listened to Kiss too. Ah...good times.
Deuce was apparently Ace Frehley's audition song for the band. They had him play along and when the time came for the solo he had to improvise something on the spot. He got the job and the solo was added to the song.
The three songs on that live are really incredible . I was like you discovering after so many years, i know the alive lp, but when you SEE this performed its just another story
I saw them in 76 first time and multiple times after....76 show will always be my number one. They had the hunger to conquer the world. The kinda lost the hunger in 77/78
At this point they were on the cusp of fading or blowing up. They were going for broke. Great reactions! Also, you said it, “hours of practice”. That’s how they locked it in. In time they would blow up and then alcohol and drugs became a problem, Peter and Ace got lazy (as essential as they are to the band, and they are my favorites, but it is what it is) and they slipped into the 80’s a little less “hungry” and a lot more distracted.
This was a focused band unleashed. Potent years 1973-1977. Long before they became sloppy KISSes. Give the video for Hard Luck Woman a watch. You’re gonna like Peter’s voice. Also, for more hungry (tv lip sync?) performance, watch the three songs they perform on Paul Lynde’s Halloween Special from the 70s. So fun.
Its refreshing to see someone see Kiss for the first time and get it. I got a lot of grief being a KISS fan when I was a kid. Id check out any of the live stuff from 75 the Alive! Tour. Amazing stuff! Also, the 1984/85 Mtv concert for the Animalize tour is fantastic! Eric Carr is just a beast that entire show. It was also Bruce Kulicks first show as an official member of the band! He and Eric really brought a lot to the band.
When they did this TV show they weren't doing well at all. Their records weren't selling. They were an opening act, and they'd get thrown off tours because most bands didn't want to follow them. And you mentioned Gene Simmons jumping up and down, well he can't do that anymore. Since Kiss has stopped touring he's been doing shows on his own. No makeup, no jumping around, he's just standing there. But him just standing there isn't a problem. He's got these good songs, he's got a tight band with him. He knows who he is and that's all he needs.
I think Bill Aucoin, their manager, had them work with his bf at the time to amp up and fine tune their stage presence. I imagine the synchro movements were one part of that contribution.
Deuce and Black Diamond were off their first album, Kiss (1974) , and She was off their third album, Dressed to Kill (1975). Their appearance on The Midnight Special was in late November 1975, shortly after the release of their live double album, Alive! (Sept 1975). This album really kickstarted their rise to stardom, it peaked at #9 on the Billboard hot 200 and charted for 110 weeks.
I'm a professional drummer and I'll second that Kiss sounds simple but even my contemporaries, just try it live yourself nailing each part perfectly. In those getups paint, flames it'd be easy to lose focus. Peter is a great drummer.
I think you would really enjoy to see an entire show from that period. Unfortunatly the in my opion best shows had to be deleted due to codyrights from Yt. The three Cobo Hall shows from Detroit January 1976 are pure dynamit. A best off of the three first albums recorded live due to the Alive tour. Every night was sold out and had an attendance of 12.000 people. KISS played the songs even a bit faster than in the MIdnight Special. I really hope that these shows will show up one day again on Yt and you will check them out. You got a subcription. Keep going!
Watching this with you. Just absolutely reminds me of just how exciting they were. 1975 incredible. I remember watching this on a small black and white tv and one of my older brothers came in and turned the channel on my and said Kiss my ass. He didn’t like them. I was devastated…. Midnight special was all there was outside of magazines and actually going to concerts. So it was especially exciting to see A band like KISS. Those first few years were incredible. Thanks for your comments on the complexity of this performance, KISS is often put down about their musical abilities, but their music is what first attracted me to them, the showmanship is great, but, the music has to be good first.
Yeah, I can understand people saying they were NOT great musicians... sure, by standards of prog players of the time. But their rough energy appeals to me more than striving for complexity.
Totally agree but they are underrated as musicians. Gene is actually a great bass player…very melodic and sometimes even busy…and while singing. He’s no Geddy but he’s an excellent player. So are Ace and Peter. Paul makes up for his playing skills as a songwriter. They WERE pretty great. But the people who dislike them tend to hate them. I get why but I don’t share that opinion. I dig vintage Kiss big time!!
@@dubuqueblues69 As for Paul's skills, he pulls off appealing solos, too, so I don't think he needs any excuses on his behalf :) Listen to him and Ace trading off in "I Want You"... he's got a really cool "hand."
Thanks for covering these three songs. Those four guys were so good early on and they were bringing it every show. I really appreciate you saying the nice things about Peter Criss because he never got the credit he deserved. Not saying he was the greatest of all time but he's far better than a lot of people say. I meant to say in my comment on your show featuring Black Diamond that Peter was a heck of singer too and it's a shame they didn't let him sing more. Check him out singing Nothin' to Lose sometime. The whole band just rocked back then. I still have all my vinyl albums from those days, just need to dig out the turntable and listen to them all again.
I remember reading an interview about this performance where Paul Stanley said this stage was weirdly slippery and he was mainly focused on not slipping that night.
Those live versions of the first three albums were absolute jams and stood up musically to anybody out there at the time. long, loud, JAMS! I'm not saying that i don't like the shorter and more quick hitting stuff that they started to put out with Destroyer ad after but...these early songs were just JAMS!!!
I first heard of KISS from friend at Ft McClellan Alabama in 1975. While stationed in Germany, I went to their 1976 concert in Frankfurt. Bought all of their albums until they took off the makeup. Just wasn’t the same to me. In 1996 they went back to their roots, and I saw their concert in Indianapolis. Finally, I went to their Indianapolis performance in 2019, on “supposedly” last tour. To your point about how dynamic they were on this early stage of their career, I thought they were great each time I saw them over a 40 year span. Thanks for sharing!
That synchronized stage move developed by their 1st band manager's partner. KISS did it every time when they performed Deuce in their shows."Firehouse" another song, at the end they have sirens going off. Finally Gene holds Kerosene in his mouth & spits fire. Another staple of their shows.A magician taught him that in the early days.Gene's hair caught on fire the 1st time he did it & a few times after.Accidently swallowed kerosene too went to the hospital
The cobo hall performance for the alive album for me is the pinnacle for being balls out tight and hungry. 100,000 years is mind blowing and the drum solo is legendary
Thanks for finishing up the set, Steven. It's amazing!! You don't just owe your dad an apology, I think he would love to go out with his family for a nice steak dinner!! HAHA Father knows best. I bet he also likes Alice Cooper.🤔🤔
Hello again. Ty for pointing out Peter's rudimentary skill. "Tight" We took a lot of crap from our friends back in 1976 liking Kiss. I am from Gene's and Paul's neighborhood and learned bass as a fan.
1983, I am an MP in the Army stationed in Nuremberg Germany. I was assigned to work the Kiss concert. My smokin hot German girlfriend was a Kiss freak. I was able to get her into the concert and also backstage. It was dead. No makeup and hardly anybody there. It looked to me like a dying band. Fast forward 20 years and i am back home in Orange County Ca. Around 2000 I was recently widowed and a friend showed up with Kiss tickets. They were on fire. Sold out the Honda Center in Anaheim Ca. I was blown away. Fire, explosions, just a spectacle. I could not believe it was the same band. I think Ted Nugent played as well, but all I remember was Kiss
@@ericfromkokomo KISS didn't play Firehouse at the Midnight Special. They played C'mon and love me, but the channel said already that there is no footage available.
So awesome that you did these reviews and even doing Black Diamond right after I was thinking "he needs to watch BD"....You just witnessed a mind blowing experience that many of us witnessed first hand growing up in the 70's. Worthy of a click on the subscribe button for sure.
This is a point where they played anywhere and everywhere. At one point they did 305 shows in a little over 2 years, part of that out of a station wagon and pull behind trailer! They practiced at every opportunity and said they wore the platform boots as much as they could, to make it 2nd nature. Paul collapsed on stage (in Atlanta?) from exhaustion! Some places they said they played two shows a day. They even played in Alaska, one of the only groups to go there back then! They wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to see them! I saw them in '77 after they'd already gotten big! Seen them 8 times total with all but the St.John era!

So awesome that you did these reviews and even doing Black Diamond right after I was thinking "he needs to watch BD"....You just witnessed a mind blowing experience that many of us witnessed first hand growing up in the 70's. Worthy of a click on the subscribe button for sure.

KISS ruled the world in the late 70's
You really need to hear the drum solo in 100,000 years. From KISS Alive!
I’d recommend clips from the following shows, Winterland 75, , Detroit 76, Houston 76, Anaheim 76, Japan 77, Houston 77, Largo 77.
KISS was amazing in the 70's, even disco KISS was awesome.
I Stole Your Love, 1977 Houston. Kiss at their absolute peak.
They were on that grind! All that hard work definitely paid off for them! Thanks for sharing!
Enjoying you diving into KISS!
As a drummer you should watch 100,000 years, live version.
KIZZ ! 🤘😝🤘
Fan Since 1976!
