@navdeep, that’s true. But the construction material, superchargers and other tech used by them are unmatched. They don’t make cars even for 0.00001 percent of the world population. Therefore they can use best of the materials and tech available in the world. Even a brand like Merc doesn’t use all that sophisticated tech compared to Koenigsegg, Bugatti and likes. They (Merc) still rely on the old-school multi-cylinder formula, now of course with Turbos/superchargers. Most mass segment players use low-cost turbos and the construction material would obviously be inferior to a luxury or supercar maker.
@rider adi, they aren’t necessarily refined all the time. But yes, they have done wonders in mass-segment small capacity 3-cylinder turbos. We’ll surely do a separate video on that. 🙂

Until a few years back Indian RUclips reviewing was all about looks, colour, comfort and fuel efficiency. Bro.... Your videos are truly amazing and it can be helpful to any non engineering background ppl. I have one question for you. Recently Mahindra Bolero switched to 3 cylinder diesel engine. Even you might have observed that newer cars are now more light and less reliable compared to older cars which used to be heavy and robust. No doubts the companies are doing this things to make it light and enhance fuel efficiency. As you said 3 cylinder engines have more vibration than 4 cylinders. Now you know that diesel engines have more vibration than petrol engines and that is the reason why majority of cars with 3 cylinders are in petrol variants only. But if you have a 3 cylinder in a diesel engine than to damp that vibration would create a lot of problem for the manufacturer. Now one of the reasons according to me for using 3 cylinder is you can save a cost of whole piston cylinder assembly and hence generating more profits. Also in the laws of balancing from theory of machines you have always even numbered weights to balance a rotating equipment. So according to you, should companies focus on making more reliable and naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engines or should they in the race for making more money compromise on the very key features of a car which a normal layman person cannot understand and switch over to 3 cylinder engines? P.S.- I'm from a mechanical engineering background. So you can explain me in technical terms if it becomes difficult to explain in layman's language. Your opinion matters a lot because I'm looking to buy a new car and I'm not just able to accept this 3 cylinder approach because it seems less reliable. Please enlighten me on this. Thank you

Excellent explanation. It is true that 4 cylinder engines are better balanced than a 3 cylinder engine. But now a days well balanced 3 cylinder engines are also quite refined but definitely 4 cylinders are quieter and less vibrating.

3 cylinder engine being odd number of cylinder is always a unbalanced engine irrespective of engineering fine tuning.Then life cycle and efficiency; 3 cylinder wint give you stable life for more than 5 years; so 3cyl. engine is big NO for me.

सही कहा आपने परन्तु तीन सिलेंडर में बैलेंसिंग की कोई समस्या नहीं होती एवं कार्यकुशलता चार सिलेंडर से काफी अच्छी होती है सभी मामलों में, जैसे कम आर पी एम पर भी लोड उठाने में , ज्यादा एवरेज देने में लीटर पर किलोमीटर, कम कीमत, कम रखरखाव के खर्चे, कम तापमान उत्तपन्न करना। रही बात ब्रेकिंग हॉर्स पावर की ,वह तो निर्भर है ओवर आल सी सी कैपेसिटी पर, जैसे 800 cc मारुति थी जिसकी कार्यकुशलता को कोई कार आज तक छू भी नहीं सकी इतनी कम कीमत में। वैसे तीन सिलेंडर का आविष्कार चार के बाद ही हुआ है । तीन सिलेंडर एक आदर्श इंजन है यही कारण है कि इसका चलन अब बढ़ता जा रहा है।

फ्रंट व्हील गाड़ियां जो होती हैं, वो हैचबेक होती हैं, या अभी जो क्रॉसओवर कार्स हैं (4 मीटर के अंदर आने वाली गाड़ियां) जैसे फोर्ड इकोस्पोर्ट, हौंडा डब्ल्यू आर वी, हुंडई क्रेटा। इनमें फ्रंट व्हील ड्राइव आता है, सेडान गाड़ियो में भी अब तो फ्रंट व्हील ड्राइव आता है। क्योंकि ये सिर्फ सिटी और हाइवे पे जाने के लिए बनी हैं और हल्के फुल्के कच्चे रोड के लिये, तो इनमें 4X4, ऑल व्हील ड्राइव, रियर व्हील ड्राइव की ज़रूरत नही हैं। और जब लोग क्रेटा को एक एसयूवी समझकर भारी गढो में या नदी नालों में कूदा देते हैं तो फिर उन्हें समझ आता है कि ये कोई एसयूवी नही है और 4X4, ऑल व्हील ड्राइव क्यो ज़रूरी है एसयूवी में या वो गाड़ियां एसयूवी क्यो कहलाती हैं। ऑल व्हील ड्राइव सिर्फ एक ही गाड़ी है क्रॉसओवर सेगमेंट में जिसमे आता है और वो है रेनो डस्टर, और इसीलिये उसकी इतनी डिमांड है, 15 लाख में कोई कंपनी ऑल व्हील ड्राइव ऑफर नही करती। duster is a gem car.
अब आपको समझ आ गया होगा कि क्या फायदे और क्या नुकसान हैं। मतलब सीधी सी बात ये कि रियर व्हील कार हैंडलिंग में ज़्यादा अच्छी होती है, ज़्यादा टॉर्क मिलता है, जल्दी स्पीड पकड़ती हैं, हल्का फुल्का ऑफ रोडिंग की जा सकती है, चढ़ाई पर ज़्यादा आसानी से चढ़ जाती है। फ्रंट व्हील ड्राइव, सस्ती गाड़ियों में आता है , इसमे रियर व्हील ड्राइव गाड़ियों के मुकाबले कम पावर मिलती है, हैंडलिंग भी उतनी अच्छी नही होती लेकिन कोई बोहत मेजर डिफरेन्स नही है। मेन्युफेक्चरिंग सस्ती होती है क्योंकि बोहत कुछ घट जाता है जैसे पिछले पहिए में लगने वाला डिफरेंशियल नही लगेगा, ड्राइव शाफ़्ट भी नही होगी जो कि खर्च बचाती है कंपनी का, और कस्टमर का भी।

सही कहा आपने परन्तु तीन सिलेंडर में बैलेंसिंग की कोई समस्या नहीं होती एवं कार्यकुशलता चार सिलेंडर से काफी अच्छी होती है सभी मामलों में, जैसे कम आर पी एम पर भी लोड उठाने में , ज्यादा एवरेज देने में लीटर पर किलोमीटर, कम कीमत, कम रखरखाव के खर्चे, कम तापमान उत्तपन्न करना। रही बात ब्रेकिंग हॉर्स पावर की ,वह तो निर्भर है ओवर आल सी सी कैपेसिटी पर, जैसे 800 cc मारुति थी जिसकी कार्यकुशलता को कोई कार आज तक छू भी नहीं सकी इतनी कम कीमत में। वैसे तीन सिलेंडर का आविष्कार चार के बाद ही हुआ है । तीन सिलेंडर एक आदर्श इंजन है यही कारण है कि इसका चलन अब बढ़ता जा रहा है।
