Awesome video scotty. My question is since bigger engines have diminishing returns weight wise, what about longevity wise. My theory is with a smaller engine, it will have to work harder compared to an engine with more cylinders of similar or identical displacement or horsepower. As a result, a bigger engine with more power strokes per second, would inherently strain less during the same conditions thus lasting longer. I've been the happy owner of a three cylinder engined, four wheel drive vehicle since the mid-eighties. Top speed is a raging 8 mph, which isn't bad for a Massey-Ferguson 1020 tractor. The engine, if my memory doesn't fail me is a 19 hp diesel. Really enjoy your videos, Scotty.
You don't. But it's better to have it and don't need than need it and don't have it. I had one or two experiences where thanks to the extra power came in hand.

oldtiedyeman, You wrote: "They lock the doors to mop the floors, otherwise customers would slip and fall and SUE" That sounds about right. It's gotten to the point where America is likely the most litigous country on earth.
Some of these modern 3 cylinder engines are really fun, they have a load of character with the extra noise they generate and they rarely feel too shy power-wise these days when they're put into small hatchbacks. Hard to dislike em.
Scotty, you forgot about the Chevy Sprint, a 3-cyl compact built for Chevy by Suzuki back in the mid-1980s. A co-worker had one and used it as his daily driver. Worked great for him driving 50-60 miles per day on the Southern California freeways, I don't recall he had any problems with it in the 4 years we worked together. Also, Yamaha made a 3-cyl motorcycle with a 650cc engine back in the early 1980s. I had one and it was my 'daily driver'. Not fast by any measure, but very reliable and very easy to maintain, and no excess vibration from the 3-cyl engine.
I owned a prior lease, at 1 yr old, a 3 cyl Chevy Sprint. I drove that car for over 140,000 with neglect to change the oil for 2 yrs......I could change all the tuneup myself, it used distributor caps, plugs, the wires too regularly. Other than that, the little car kept me going for 11 yrs. I traded it in for a Ford Escort, 4 dr, drove it for 13 yrs....now, I have a Saturn Ion2, for 15 yrs....the only reason I want to trade it in is due to the parts not being available and in Vegas, mechanics do not work on these 17 18 yr old cars.
@Erwin Schrödinger they do the job that they were designed to do. Reliable fuel efficient light weight. Can't expect much from something that is approaching 30 years old and still getting 50 mpg.
I am also a Geo owner, and sadly all the facts aren't true. The Geo Metro was NOT the first car to have a 3 cylinder motor as a mass-produced car. Doesn't anyone remember the 1985 Chevrolet Sprint??? The Sprint had the first 3 cylinder engine and got over 55 mpg. I remember seeing them at Chevrolet showrooms and they were NOT produced by Geo or any other car manufacturer. If you're gonna state facts, you need to get them right!
The Chevy Sprint was a Suzuki Forsa. It was carburated and had 49hp. I drove one for 3 years. Geo Metro was a Suzuki Swift. Here in Canada they also sold the Swift has a Chevy Sprint and Pontiac Firefly, before introducing the Geo Brand.
Yes, but when the Chevrolet Sprint was being sold in the United States in 1985, Suzuki's weren't imported into this country. They came later. So to say that the Geo Metro was the first 3 cylinder engine car sold in the United States isn't correct.
As a previous owner of a 91 Geo metro, the Sprint was the same thing as I actually bought parts off of a Chevy sprint engine in the junkyard to put on my Geo.
Back when I was starting out I bought a brand new Metro for the grand sum of $6700.00. Air conditioning, power brakes, and nothing else. It was the hatchback, and I'll never forget my wife and I going on a 3 day 1st anniversary trip to the mountains. Round trip with the AC blowing...$20.00 in gas. 47 mpg and I still came home with nothing but less than a dollar change in my pocket. But hey, young, dumb and great memories. My daughter was born 9 months later! I drove that car for four years, sold it to my dad (he travelled a lot selling insurance) and he drove it for four more years, then sold it to a preacher who drove it a couple years and gave it to a woman who was broke and needed a car. She totaled it, but that 3 cylinder never gave any trouble and I only remember it being a great little motor. We changed the timing belt every 70,000 miles per the manual and it just kept going.
My Mom just bought a 2021 Chevy Trailblazer with a 1.3 liter L3T turbo charged engine. I was super surprised with it's acceleration. 150 horsepower. We've come a long way that's for sure.
Here in Brazil this engine is a success. Ford , Hyundai and VW. One important thing Scott didn´t say is about torque. This engine has same torque as an 4 cilinder 2.0 engine. My brother has one ford with 1.0 aspirated 3 cilinder and I one VW Polo TSi turbo 3 cilinder. Power and fuel economy. I won´t regret.
It's a perfect solid car as long as you have a manual transmission! It's one of my favorite cars. My sister has a se with 130,000 miles on it and it's running strong. She has a manual one.
Hey Scotty I had a new 1986 Suzuki Forsa which was a 3 cylinder engine which was a very fuel efficient and good ride. I drove if for 330,000 miles after 13 years.
I drove the new Renault Clio 3 cylinder manual/stick transmission, had it as a rental. It took some time understanding the car, as the dials light up and tell you to change/shift the gear up or down. The technology is changed, it gave smooth ride.
The Ford three cylinder engines are good little motors. The Ford 125 1.0 is smooth and free revving and can pull even a Focus along at a good rate, even better in th Fiesta. When it first came out in 2011 I drove one in a Focus and could not believe how good it was despite being sceptical. The 1.5 three in th Fiesta ST is a great little motor too. It's quick and it sounds great too.
They were made by am general for years which was a fleet version of AMC. Still see them often still going. They had a 2.5 litre 150ci cast iron engine. As far as muffler. I think they just don't bother servicing them...lol. Runs better
Scotty: what is a better engine: (for the ,$$$)...sprinter or pro master? I'm on on the fence...ouch!! I think mechanics for British engines charge more. Yes?
My dad got 2 Geo metros for him and my sister. My sister got the 4 cylinder automatic sedan and my dad the 3 cylinder hatchback. The 3 cylinder seemd to accelerate slightly faster than the 4. Plus the mpg was better it was 50ish mpg and the 4 only got 29. I hated the 4 cylinder Geo's, moped's kept passing. Although it's hilarious to rev it in front of nicer cars like mustang's or a Corvette. You'll kill someone making them laugh so hard. Just make sure u have serious look on your face when u do it.
I still drive a 3 cylinder, 5 speed Metro. Plenty of power and I average a combined 45 mpg during the warmer months. A little less in the winter. Almost as good as a Prius and better than many other hybrids. And with the back seat down, plenty of room to haul stuff.
I still see them here. Just not as often cuz they're getting old. Seen a few in pretty good shape too. Saw a junk prism with just under 300k miles, but they rebuilt the engine at around 150k.
Craiova engine plant - engine made in Romania, bet most Americans do not have any clue where it is. :-D But europeans know its a land of Dacia cars. ;-)
I live about 70 miles away from Craiova. although ford is manufactured there, you do not see much ford cars on the street. they are expensive for Romanian purchasing power.
My 1.5 Ford Fusion engine is also made in Craiova. I was born in Gorj but grew up in Canada, so it was a very nice surprise when I learned where my engine was made :D
HEY SCOTTY Since you brought this up could you speak on a Opposed-Piston engines,, Because a 3CYL Opposed piston engine is supposed to be equivalent to a 6cyl Because it has basically dual pistons in a longer cylinder that is about the size of 2 cylinders I really hope you do because this is something not many people know about
I like this question more than my own question. The one I have in mind is supposed to be a 3-cyl. supercharged turbocharged 2-stroke diesel with opposed pistons
you mean like my 3 cylinder 92 geo metro? I'll tell you something about it...i had a state trooper not even write me a speeding ticket one time cause he said a judge wouldn't believe i was going that fast.😅 i had that thing flying!
You can always turbocharge it to 125 hp with better cast internals. If you do that, it will be more than adequate adequate for 85 mph highways making it quite a nice daily driver and still get sky high mpg.
I own a Ford Focus ecoboost 1.0 litre 125 bhp car. It gives as good fuel economy as a hybrid. It's got good acceleration and a good top speed of about 115 mph. I get my Focus service by Ford, they've looked after my car since it was new 6 years ago. It never uses any oil, doesn't smoke and it has a great growl sound when I rev the engine. Great video.
i know i'm late, but i just bought a 1.0 3 cylinder 2019 kia ceed with 120 hp. i am delighted! nice zippy little engine. my other car is a 2003 micra, also with 1.0 (with, i believe, 4 cylinders), but only 65 hp. the ceed feels like a sports car in comparison!

@@beanboy3324 there have not been any major problems reported in Germany with the I3 Ecosport. And they sell really good over here. Ford offers a 1.25 Liter with stock 170 HP.
Drove my '97 3 cyl. stick-shift Geo Metro round trip from L.A. to Las Vegas about 5 times over the years. Made the trips just fine, although when going up the 4K ft. high desert peak, the car tops out at 35mph. Literally can't go any faster on the grade. Have to get in the truck lane. --It's still going strong, with just 122k original miles. Great little car.
Yes! I have the old 1987 Suzuki Forsa (Chevy Sprint) with the 3-cylinder 1.0 liter engine (as a cheap project and summer daily driver). It's 5-speed manual and is surprisingly fun to drive! Just avoid any freeways or serious hills LOL. Has over 160000 miles and I get some amazing gas mileage with it. I'm thinking maybe I should do a video for it :D
why does everyone hate on scotty? he's really helpful honestly and has a good 'no bullshit' personality which really helps me learn because he gets to the point.
Yeah -- that's what I was hoping he was about to say. "Place a clean non-offensive comment in the comments below and I'll give away this Ford EcoSport!" :-)
Hey Scotty what are the easiest brand of cars you've worked on? My non offensive comment is point blank you're channel is amazing & I love when I get a notification from any of your videos. Whether it be repair or advice.
Yeah. The later Daihatsu designed 1kr-fe 1.0 3 cyl is also a good motor. Lightweight, VVT-i, low friction, low emissions, high mpg. Used in Daihatsu Sirion (replaced Charade) Toyota Yaris (2006+) and some other models (in UK at least)
@@jusb1066 I have to say I really like driving my girlfriend's aygo (at least when I can get comfortable in it!), the 3 cylinder in that absolutely loves a heavy boot on the gas pedal
I used to work for Westinghouse Security Systems 30 years ago and our first company vehicles were Geo Metros. We called them the 3 cylinder beer cans of death. You had to get the car up to 80 mph just to be doing 55 mph by the time you got to the top of the IH 45 bridge at Galveston. Thank goodness the next year they were replaced with Ford Rangers.
Halibaster - if that were the case, modern small engines would make little horsepower as well, since they're carrying even more emissions-reducing equipment. The old engines had a lower power-to-displacement ratio for one major reason - efficiency. Back in the day they didn't have computer-aided-design-built blocks and heads, camshaft phasing, gasoline direct injection, optical/digital ignition, computer-controlled fuel injection or the wealth of knowledge current engineers have regarding camshaft design. If you look at a near-equal comparison in displacement - a 5.0 "H.O." Ford from 1985 versus a 2018 5.0 "Coyote", you will see nearly double the power output from the same displacement - this with a host of emissions equipment and stringent OBD-III compliance.
I had a 1996 Geo Metro ( Suzuki Swift) with 3 cylinder 1.0L engine and 5 speed manual transmission. Delivered pizza's with it back in days i had it. The car was indestructible beast, been put true such abuse and never not once broke down in 5 years or so of heavy exploiting. Oh and i bought it used with like 100K+ miles for 900 dollars lol The car was actually sorta fun to drive too being a manual, that little engine revved so well like a motorcycle, still have good memories for that amazing little car.
My first car was a 1984 Suzuki sa310 I inherited from my brother when I was 15 years old. He smoked that car before give it to me and it was still running great. The tank will fill With 7 bucks and lasted A whole week.
I had an 85 Chevy Sprint with a three cylinder. It was a speedy little thing that would jump like a jackrabbit, but it was like maintaining an aircraft with all the parts built right to their lowest weight limits. I started getting blowback at around 60,000, so I sold it but I missed being at the next traffic light before the SUV's around me could lumber across the last intersection.
I actually have a Ford Ecosport 1.5 3 cylinder with automatic transmission since they've released this new model in Brazil 3 years ago. I'm still with it and its an amazing vehicle. It's robust, have decent fuel consumption, good for everything that I've tried (city, road, country, towing a medium sized boat and a big jet ski, wet pavement, mud and everything). This 6 gears do a great job even if you drive on D. The only bad things that I could say about the car are that Ford closed factory here on BR, so it got the sales value a little low for who already owned one; here the starting version comes with a small screen radio with no rear camera; also here, it have only 2 front airbags (it could have 4 or 5 like its rivals). If you think about getting one, go for it with no regrets.
my 88 sprint (suzuki cultus/swift) has a carbureted 1.0L 3cyl 5spd with .. like 46hp, 1500lbs. i have no problem getting on the highway getting up to 60 mph by then end of the ramp, its great around town and back roads.. it certainly won't win ANY races.. but, it does get 55+mpg! i think people are too caught up on going 0-60 in 5 seconds.. when is that necessary? i mean, unless you often pull out in front of people! probably the same people that refuse to stop at a light.. they keep creeeeeping up till there out in the intersection! i blame adderall and testosterone! don't get me wrong.. i've driven my moms w8 (8cyl) 6spd passat, my roommates golf R32, aunts boxster S, and i have always loved cars/mechanics, so.. i get the fun appeal, and understand that you need more power/space if you often have passengers or cargo. but, my 46hp micro car is plenty for my single late 20s guy needs! its not for every person/situation obviously. you just have to be willing to chill and drive casually!
I have had a '91 Geo Metro and have a 2015 Mirage and totally agree. Although, when I was in my 20's like you, I would not have been satisfied with 3 cylinders and sub-100 HP.
@Brandon Zearfoss Those little suzuki 3 cyl swifts are great little cars as my father drives a 1987 swift and runs and drives perfectly and no blue smoke and has savage mileage on it with original engine and gearbox.
Before the 3 cylinder Geo Metro, there was the 3 cylinder Chevrolet Sprint. That was my first car. I would've got the Suzuki Forsa if I knew about it back then.
My other half had a 2010 Alto, and its 3-cyl 1.0l 12v engine actually put out more power than my old 1996 4-cyl 1.2l 8v Clio used to (67 vs. 60). She now drives a 2016 Mirage Juro which has a 3-cyl 1.2l 12v engine producing 79 bhp that uses less fuel and goes much faster than either of them, and still without a turbo. Three cylinder engines have come a pretty long way, though to be fair, a comparison with an engine developed in the mid-90s isn't going to be too favourable. :)
Question so replacing simple technology of adding one cylinder ther added more complex turbo with lot of bent Pipes and cooling houses to cool turbo and electronic to control turbo.. hmmmm interesting
Yes , and it works. Would you like to have contact point igniton or electronic ignition ? Do you like a starter motor on batterie or would you like to handcrank the engine. Candels or electric lighting , you choose.
It's pretty reliable too. I've got 76k miles on mine, I bought it new and have had zero problems with it. averages 42mpg as well (it's the 6 speed manual)
@@JSAFIXIT Those 3 cylinder Mitsubishi engines are really good and have proven reliability. Although small, they are strong engines cause they have to rev higher. I heard running your engine on just gasoline Vapors is too lean and you'll burn valves, but if this is true then how come you can run it on propane and other gases and not burn your valves. Please answer this for me. thanks.
The BTU for propane is around 91,000 and gasoline BTUs are right around a 115,000 which explains why you didn't make as much power on propane but I wonder if gasoline fumes carries the same BTUs.
Truth of the matter: its only the vaporized gasoline that burns. If you introduce vaporized gasoline and air at the correct Stoichiometric ratio into your engine, it would be completely fine, and there would be no burnt valves. In a sense, that's how a carburetor works - a fine mist of gasoline is drawn from the venturi into the air flowing through the carburetor; this mist vaporizes as it travels through the intake and into the cylinders. The heat and swirl introduced during the transit to the cylinder vaporizes the majority of the gas before it enters the cylinder. A 'burned valve' is a sort of a catch-all for a valve that has experienced damage as a result of the valve's failure to conduct heat away through the seal against the seat. A valve burns mostly as a result of either poor seal/contact with the seat from an over-rich condition introducing carbon buildup or the damaging misfires that can occur as a result of that over-lean condition you're thinking about.
Hardened Valves like on Lead free engines. My Friend had a V8 Range Rover that ran 100% on LPG. no petrol . no petrol tank. just lots of LPG Tanks. It ran Spot on. The Oil was Cleaner & it was half price to run. A Fantastic conversion done by a Range Rover Specialist.
Hey Scotty how do you buy good tires with out getting ripped off .tires prices are ridiculous $1000- 2000 a set for name brand tires I'm aware of the knock off Chinese tires being crap and not to buy them but there $200 bucks for a set. what do I do to find tires that are good with out pay big buck for the name on the side of the tires ???
Idk what you are talking about I got a new set of yokahama geolandar ats on my land cruiser for like 800 bucks. Yokahama is a good name brand I have avid ascends on my sonata with 50,000 miles on them and they still look practically new. Pay a little more for name brands it's worth it.
JOKER, !! Try a European car, they go like the wind & Handle like a GO CART !! How fast do you drive in the USA ? 55 mph ? Uk Motorways are 70 mph, but run at 90 mph most days ALL DAY LONG 100's of miles. Certain areas have speed cameras, but mostly at 90 mph you will need to move over for a faster car. to avoid a traffic Tail back. & road rage .
I had a red '87 Chevy Sprint 3 cylinder. That's all it came in, if the wind got up past 5 mph it would burn a half tank of gas before i went 10 miles, but when the wind wasn't blowing it was nothing but smooth sailing.
A note here: Europeans aren't really into three cylinder engines. The European commission is. Most europeans (at least as far as owners of newer cars are concerned) either don't care, don't have any choice or ride luxury cars which still use correct number of cyllinders :)
I bought a 1.6 4 cylinder naturally aspirated 5 speed manual ford fiesta in 2014...been a nice car ...averaging 40 mpg but stay on hwy mostly. much simpler than direct injected turbos...those scare me in terms of future repairs and longevity.

Good Video! Your right, the more size plus weight. The bigger, the suspension, wider the tires, heavier the frame, and more components needed for safety etc. Cadillac Escalade XL needs a 6.2L engine and them wider tires to keep it stable. You cannot expect 38 mpg with that boat!
Bali Indonesia 2019 I rented a Toyota Agya 1 liter 3 cylinder. That led to buying a used low mileage 2023 for less than U$ 9k. Excellent mileage and it’s a perfect small car. especially for outside of North America.
Just had to put my 2000 Chevy Metro down after 68,500 miles due to the suspension area rust spot that kept breaking my axels . Now I’m getting a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage
What's your view on the 2 cilinder engine (Multi Air from Fiat)? It's stuffed with technology, but it's not fuel efficient at all! And it vibrates a lot!
Right before they changed the name to Geo Metro - it was called the Chevrolet Sprint. I had an '87 - great commuter - 55mpg on the highway. Strange though - the car went through 3 mufflers by 80K miles.
I have a toyota with a 3 cylinder engine with just over 50k miles. Its been diagnosed by toyota as using between 0.8 a 1 litre of oil per 1k miles. Toyota says its within their specification and they will not investigate unless its 1ml over 1 litre per 1k miles... For those that didn't know, this is stated in your toyota handbook and its what you agreed to when you purchased the vehicle from toyota or its within toyota warranty !!!

As a Geo enthusiast I appreciate the correct facts on it, most people get the specs and manufactures wrong, thanks for putting out great content.
You are awesome. Thanks for taking your precious time and share info. Helping worldwide!
I agree, sir.

Im glad you don't hate the modern 3-cylinder engines. I was considering a 2019 Ford Fiesta ST.

I can relate, my dad had a Chevy Sprint 3 cyl stick shift hatchback and i learned to drive with it. It had a Japanese engine. Not bad at all!
The hatchback I liked. Mpg was awesome and with the backseat down u could fit a decent amount of stuff in it. Acceleration was horrible tho.
This is why I love old mechanics they are comedians. "55HP washing machine" 😂

Hey Scotty, can you tell us why old cars with those huge engines made so little power compared to a modern small engine.
Smog regulations. They stifled the engines to get better emissions.
turbos and direct injections
Computers
Older engines used push rods.

I love how you sound like Ken Rosenberg after finding out he's in danger for his life, except for you it's just the regular euphoria. XD
Love it.
Cars are too expensive... My next car will be 3 cylinders. Stick shift.
So a new ford fiesta st? I'm scared of 3 cylinder motors.
Maybe you’re just broke
I've had a fiesta zetec s since 2013. It's been a very good car all round
I bought a 1.6 4 cylinder naturally aspirated 5 speed manual ford fiesta in 2014...been a nice car ...averaging 40 mpg but stay on hwy mostly. much simpler than direct injected turbos...those scare me in terms of future repairs and longevity.
@@ljoelmchanley3676 if you push the car constantly. You will certainly wear the components faster. However driving normally. Will help avoid those issues. Great car
I have a 2012 Toyota prius hybrid And my wife drives a 2013 Toyota aygo 1.0 3 cilinder. We don’t need a fast bmw. In the netherlands the max speed is 130 kmh. And everywhere is a speed radar control camera. Save money and drive toyota!
Ricardo tru dat
@Ricardo 90ps Vs 1400kg :-/ 1,5l gas no Turbo...fck hate my car but gas mileage is good relatively
agreed
Ricardo I find this to be true only in certain scenarios i.e. highway overtaking
Get the App "WAZE" ... it will tell you ahead of time where cameras are
Good Video! Your right, the more size plus weight. The bigger, the suspension, wider the tires, heavier the frame, and more components needed for safety etc. Cadillac Escalade XL needs a 6.2L engine and them wider tires to keep it stable. You cannot expect 38 mpg with that boat!
I want a 3L 3 cylinder. Long stroke, longer than the bore by 20mm. Lol
Remember that old diesel caterpillar tractor with 3 cylinders
No, but i but they were indestructible.
Bali Indonesia 2019 I rented a Toyota Agya 1 liter 3 cylinder. That led to buying a used low mileage 2023 for less than U$ 9k. Excellent mileage and it’s a perfect small car. especially for outside of North America.
Time for history on 5 cylinder engines?
Volvos are all I know of there
volvo and old mercedes diesel
The Colorado has a 5 cylinder engine, or at least the first ones did, I hear they have 6 cylinders in them now.
VW/ Audi made and still do 5 cylinder engines.
Also Fiat had 5 cylinder but not sure if it was their own engines.
Acura Vigor?
Is there any other car you would buy besides toyotas and hondas?
lexus.... :)
Acura
Scion lmfaooo
Acura, lexus, scion, subaru, mazda.
Some Fords seem to get pretty good comments from Scotty
Just had to put my 2000 Chevy Metro down after 68,500 miles due to the suspension area rust spot that kept breaking my axels . Now I’m getting a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage
What's your view on the 2 cilinder engine (Multi Air from Fiat)? It's stuffed with technology, but it's not fuel efficient at all! And it vibrates a lot!
karperman14 well that’s probably why Fiat is failing and losing sales. They suck at manufacturing good cars.
Tell us about E3 and other fancy spark plugs.
For those that didn't know, this is stated in your toyota handbook and its what you agreed to when you purchased the vehicle from toyota or its within toyota warranty !!!
wtf
