VW had some cars wherein the cylinders can be shut-down when not in performance mode. Toyota cars are smooth because they don't change their engine design. They design once and use it for many years with continuous improvement. That's why their engines are smooth.
Best explained... For low end torque or grunt and power from the get go they use VGT or variable geometry turbine... This also helps in increased power from smaller capacity engines.... Nice to see.. 👍
But the truth is perfomace of naturally aspirated 4 cylinders is becoming shittier nowadays, example new creta and verna in petrol barely have 140nm torque, also new grand vitara and venue sonet have shitty performance in 4 cylinders NA enginess, if refinement is someone all he cares he should buy ev then, perfomance wise 4 cylinders engines are declining every year which is sad
So glad this video sheds light on such an important but unfortunately ignored aspect. My 2013 i20 with 4 cylinders runs so refined even after 1.93 lakh kms. With most cars today coming with 3-cylinders, it's becoming difficult to make the right choice. Take for instance, Kushaq's Ambition 1.5 which has 4 cylinders directly costs straight 2.15 lakhs extra over its 1-litre 3 cylinder variant.
I am a Tata Tiago owner from the past 5 years and yes I can say the 3 cylinder engine lack power that we get in 4 cylinder engine.. But yes I can compromise a bit on engine power but not on safety.. Tata build their cars keeping safety of the people who are riding in mind.. Maruti on the other hand will provide you a great mileage but their cars are very light weight in terms of material they use and majority of their cars are rated either 1 or 2 stars in safety.. If you really like the engine power and safety as well.. Mahindra is doing really well.. They have focused on engines and safety..
I own 2017 tiago with 60k km on odo. Except two times when engine got stalled after overheating (6hr drive with ac, started after 10min cooling and drove another hour to reach) and small issues like music system display, no issues faced. Very comfortable ride for the price and good enough performance for most situations, very happy so far. Music system is top notch, refinement is the only downside but I don't find it in annoying levels. Mileage 17km avg in highway with 110 to 120 speed, 14 in city.

Great explanation, clears all doubts. I drove my brother in law's 3 cylinder polo and had hard time near the beach with low friction from ground as well as when starting from zero on incline or against small bumpers. These problems, o didn't face while using my own 4 cylinder polo. Thanks for explaining concise and efficiently. Also one request for additional explanation, about the number of valves in each cylinder for a 3 cylinder vs 4 cylinder . Thanks
I drive a Reno Triber and love its 3 cylinder unit. I like the fact that without the cost, weight & complexities of a 4 cylinder unit, 3 cylinder engines get most of the job done. I believe that if the Nano was powered by a 3 cylinder unit instead of the 2 cylinder one it came with, it wouldn't have failed. 3 cylinder engines are the future. In the world of hybrid technology, 3 ICE cylinders + 1 electric motor will soon be the order of the day.
visual explanation was really amazing. only someone who is using 4 pot can feel that under the hood difference and unstable noise of 3 cylinder of cars like Tiago & Kushaq. Nexon still manages well in same 3 cylinder.
very informative video. I own altroz and i dont regret at all since the engine is way smoother than expected with advantage of safety and fuel efficiency. i really enjoy riding altroz
I have a contrarian view of 3/4 cylinder engines. Having used all what i could infer is that lower the cylinder number, bigger the block and better torque per cc. Have you wondered why where scorpios and Fortuners (non 4x4) struggle you can see a loaded Alto or Maruti 800 pass them by with full set of passengers? 4 cylinders perform well for high speed zero gradient highway cruising. Even while riding bikes, what I noticed is that the initial torque and push of a single cylinder bullet KTM and the punchy push of a Ducati V twin cannot be compared to a silky smooth 1000cc 4 straight cylinder Ninjas or GSXs.. only the three cylinder Tiger 800 can pull from a lazy cruising pace to three digit speeds in a single gear, giving you the low end of a single or twin and the high sprint of a 4 cylinder.. the secret is the size of the cylinder and pushrod.. 4 cylinders have comparatively smaller blocks but can be revved to high RPMs without much vibration unlike the bigger blocks of comparable cc in 3 cylinder or 2 cylinder.. turbocharging a 3 cylinders pushes the output but drastically cuts down fuel economy... after owning straight sixes in petrol and diesel, regularly driving 4 cylinders now i have gotten into a turbocharged 3 cylinder 999cc i20 Nline.. and i am grinning ear to ear like never before..
I don't think that Scorpio, Fortuner vs Alto and 800 was a good Comparison It's mainly bcoz Size of the car, Imagine what would happen if they swap their engines And Even You can Drive Tata Bolt and Tata Tigor or Tiago you will see the difference
@@Shreejansurya98 its simple, take 1000 cc and divide between cylinders, you get the idea size of the block and the resultant higher torque output of the long stroke output it can deliver per cylinder, of course the weight is an advantage but for sheer performance this is undeniable. That's why tractors etc still have single double and three cylinder configurations and are able to off road better than any 4wD
totally logical except 6 cylinders (i havent experienced it, might well be true)...i have experienced all that you told and 3 cylinder engines pull out quite well because of firing power strokes per cycle....i read that its firing angle is 120 degree of each rotation while 4 cylinder is 180 degrees for each rotation (googled it)....i can live with light vibration for that grin which you told....add it with a turbo...i am more than happy on highways cruising.... without getting bogged out during overtakes ....#totallyagreed...
Still don't just go on the no. of cylinders as the only factor For example - tata nexon's 1.2 litre and 3 cylinder turbocharged engine produces more power and torque than maruti brezza's 1.5litre and 4 cylinder engine
Tata started to produce 118+ BHP in their petrol turbo Nexon s. The engine refinement is nearly as good as the 4 cylinder wagon R I bought in 2010, the same year when wagon R went thru a face lift. The K series was not refined and there was lot of idle flatter. Since 2015 I am a happy Tata motors customer. I had a diesel zest (4 cylinder turbo diesel from Fiat stable generating 90bhp) and now a petrol Nexon. (3 cylinder turbo petrol with 118bhp output) With the addition of engine modes (eco, city and sport) the driver can modulate power-fuel consumption variables at will
I like TATA Tiago. Initially I feel vibration & sound. I do some changes like used Fully synthetic engine oil & transmission oil. I also replaced MRF tyres with Yokoyama tyres. Always used Exta premium oil. Now my TATA Tiago is running very smoothly and I am getting very good mileage around 18 to 19 in the city & 25 to 27 on highways.

Good content. Some manufacturers hide their weakness by highlighting build quality. Its like a gym guy who regularly misses leg days. He has the show but no go. One thing you missed to highlight here is about the fact that 3 cylinders wear out faster than 4 cylinder vehicles. Another thing to note is that though Honda and Suzuki use 1.2 litre 4 cylinder engines, they are still fuel efficient than TATA 3 cylinder 1.2 petrol in real life conditions.

Amazing insights provided in this video! Even for a person not understanding how engines work and affect cars, it's become very easy to digest all this.
The latest 3 cylinder cars have very good performance. The common misconception is that by going from four to three cylinders the pickup will drop by 25% which is far from true. With turbo the difference is so small that it is hard to notice without having a proper drag race.
We have booked Fronx Alpha Automatic which is Turbo charged. In a test drive with the actual buyer we found the car to be extremely powerful and the engine very responsive. Thanks for giving such a remarkable post with lucid description.

All these days i though tata engenes were having inferior engeneering : only now I realised they were trying to make affordable safe cars that appeal to people - they were thinking of the common man and i was thinking they were inferior 😔
True, Suzuki is compromising build quality to match the emission norms and mileage while Tata is settling for lesser refined cars but best quality of material
U were right. Cars are indeed inferior. they can't make good engines, reliable cars and after sell service isn't any good either so in order to survive they want strong USP to hold on and so they focused onto build quality and put tagline of safest/ 5star rated cars.
I own a Altroz , But i still believe Tata engineering have no match to Suzuki/Hyundai yet , you compare a Nexon 3 cylinder with Venue 3 Cylinder , there is a huge gap , Also gear shifting is very rough. And no one knows what will happen with current tata cars 10 years from now , when very often we see Maruti /Hyundai cars in a good condition even after 10/12 years , And Engine/Gear is the heart of car, not the body or interior. Edit : If i go back 2020 , i will still buy Altroz XZ, As its looks best , Strong like a Tank , So Many features on less price , Premium and Spacious Cabin , only thing I compromised was proven track record of Long term reliability. I don't mind about Noise and Vibration , its manageable .
In Mahindra, they do have a 3 cylinder diesel engine of 1.5 litres, and that also I have driven it which feel so smooth to drive, and it's sound only can be felt at high rpms which is clear that it has 3 cylinders
We own a i10 nios 1L turbo engine varient which has 3 cylinder. Till now the engine runs very smooth and is silent. Its is a very fun to drive car and gives the req amount of power while overtaking all thanks to the turbo engine. 👍
I have a 2021 tiago which has a naturally aspirated 3 cylinder i feel they are not that underpowered power is good enough to have decent pickup and i can do 100-110 on the highway comfortably without the engine screaming

I have a suggestion. We can make the same 1500 or less into 6 cylinder inline with half the displacement as that of the 3 cylinder engines or 2 stroke Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder(OPOC) with petrol fuel injection. This can improve both refinement and balancing will ot be an issue. Also it gives smoothness since power stoke overlap of 24 degrees is there.
You are too wishful. Tata and Mahindra had a lead over japanese in making engines and tata still makes horrible engines. Mahindra engines are still not as superior as japanese ones.
The myth that 3 cylinder engines are underpowered is bullshit. If you are using a 4stroke engine, even a 1 cylinder engine of the same cc will deliver the same power in a more non linear way. The advantage of 4 cylinder is linear delivery of power and due to higher bore:stroke ratio can rev to higher rpms. But 3 cylinder engines are more practical due to reduced weight increased mileage and the ability and space to add on a turbocharger which makes the car more powerful than any other 4cylinder car. The turbo lag can be mitigated as in altroz by using a smaller turbocharger. In short 3 cylinder engines are less refined but more practical and at the end of the day give out more power whereas 4 cylinder is more refined and gives decent power
For tata users ,try changing the stock spark plugs to ngk iridium spark plug. There's a youtuber who tried this and the idling vibrations get reduced and mileage improved. The thing with iridum is that the size of spark plug's point is much small compared to stock plug, because of the better conductivity of iridium. Less carbon deposit ,so in long term ,it should perform better than stock plug. But this doesn't do any better in already refined engine ,like for maruthi's, but lasts longer for them also. So if anyone can try this, please do and comment.
First time on your channel and really impressed with this nice video! It explains a lot about 3-cyl vs 4-cyl, in simple terms and good animations/graphics. It seems the current TATA engines work upon MPFI-based technology while many other companies use 3-cyl with GDI-based technology. It would be great to have your explanation (may be in some future video) on the effect of GDI and MPFI on 3-cyl, especially concerning the vibration and power efficiency.

I am owning Tata Tiago for more than 5 years now. Just one suggestion for you bro, mileage will drop suddenly after 4 years so in-order to remediate that please change spark-plugs and install iridium spark plugs.

Among cars with 3-cylinder engines, definitely Skoda Rapid earlier was and now Skoda Slavia / Kushaq / VW Virtus / Taigun are fairly refined with their 1.0 TSI compared to 1.2 litre engines of Tata. They have minimal turbo lag and accelerate fairly quickly from standstill and have no problems in hill-climb etc.
Tata can't make smooth engines becoz of three cylinder doesn't sound convincing. I agree, three cylinder engines are by nature unrefined to four cylinder but there're many three cylinder engines which are at par with four cylinder in power and refinements. So question still remains the same why hasn't tata able to produce good engines?
100% agreed.. thats why they are switchinf towards evs bcuz they cant make a fricking engine.. and they are just using chinese batteries in their cars..

@biky rout On oneway highway cruising at 90kmph to 100kmph it gives 19 to 20 kmpl. On 80kmph more than 20kmpl. In city it all depends on traffic conditions.
Wrong info, 1:28 .. All Tata's diesel engines are 4 cylinders including Nexon and altroz. Though 3 cylinders engine are less refined but doesn't cause harm but low build quality can even cause death
Maruti suzuki doesn't give higher mileage just due to low weight. They are wizards of engine technology. They use 1.2 L dual jet dual vvt engine which has a higher compression ratio for more efficiency and power. Vvt gives more mileage and dual jet system gives good power delivery at both high and low rpms. In short it is a beauty

You have enjoyed 4 cylinder silent engine over 10 yrs now. Don't go for any 3 cylinder engine at any cost. Go for Honda City or Elevate

I drive a Reno Triber and love its 3 cylinder unit. I like the fact that without the cost, weight & complexities of a 4 cylinder unit, 3 cylinder engines get most of the job done. very informative video.
I don't think that Scorpio, Fortuner vs Alto and 800 was a good Comparison
It's mainly bcoz Size of the car, Imagine what would happen if they swap their engines
And Even You can Drive Tata Bolt and Tata Tigor or Tiago you will see the difference
Also depends on the gear ratios.
In motorcycles, three cylinder is definitely my favorite. I especially love the whine and low end
Being a car enthusiast your video has given me more insights into all those engine specs, thanks man!
Still don't just go on the no. of cylinders as the only factor
For example - tata nexon's 1.2 litre and 3 cylinder turbocharged engine produces more power and torque than maruti brezza's 1.5litre and 4 cylinder engine
@ totally agree, a Verna 4c 1.6 naturally aspirated engine produces same power as my turbo charged 1L 3c Venue N line.
(3 cylinder turbo petrol with 118bhp output)

And no one knows what will happen with current tata cars 10 years from now , when very often we see Maruti /Hyundai cars in a good condition even after 10/12 years , And Engine/Gear is the heart of car, not the body or interior.

Thank you for coming up with so well researched videos regularly!!!

Hi! how does one research how Indian brands are working on hybrid and flex-fuel engines?
Great work ! Up to date content and easy to understand for common folks.
So a RUclipsr is solving Tata's engine problem while their Engineers couldn't, Interesting.

Yes correct
@biky rout How much average do you think it deliver ?
9-12 kmpl depending on situations
@biky rout On oneway highway cruising at 90kmph to 100kmph it gives 19 to 20 kmpl. On 80kmph more than 20kmpl. In city it all depends on traffic conditions.

Wrong info, 1:28 .. All Tata's diesel engines are 4 cylinders including Nexon and altroz.
Though 3 cylinders engine are less refined but doesn't cause harm but low build quality can even cause death
Diesel engines have a cap of 10 years in Delhi NCR. 3 cylinder engines feel too much underpowered too.
