Steve, I want to say, that I appreciate you and thank you for taking the time to do what you do for us viewers. I love the content you put out on your channel and will watch it forever.
Another reason to install a fuel filter the recommended way, is that the media is stronger when the fuel flows from outside->in, vs inside->out. If a filter is plugged on a pressured system, the media can be pulled apart much easier, than crushed in.
Surface area of one side of a sheet of paper is the same as the other. What is different is the narrow pleats can more rapidly fill and not use all the surface area. The area outside the media has move volume for fuel.
Steve thanks for your insight, your the only one on you tube, that describes how fuel filter works, the others not so, thank you, you really helped me out.
Always count on Steve to keep us on the “straight and arrow”. I’m having a Busch now, heading to the shower after 2 hours of yard work in s Fla, after work. I’m bushed!
I always knew that as far as filtration goes it shouldn't make a difference which orientation the filter is installed, but as an indicator to observe how blocked it is makes total sense. Thanks so much for sharing. 😉👌🏻
That’s a NO sip vid there folks. Great message and I’d just say that if you’re waiting to change that puppy when it’s clogged from the inside you’re missing the point on preventative maintenance. Once a season folks. Invest in maintenance and avoid 50% of the mid season breakdowns ✌🏽
Very simple explanation of why the fuel flows in a certain way, answered the question exactly so I knew which way to put the new fuel filter on. Thank you
The point> of giving proper direction is to keep a clear view of the information flowing without restricting progress. As an additional directive, hops imbelished beverages also have a flow sequence. Use the pull tab to initiate enjoyment; Accessing the contents from the opposite end using sharp implements could initiate unwanted rapid release and waste of contents. Be safe Steve and best to you and yours.
True for tiny gravity feed filters. For systems with a fuel PUMP (like vehicles and bigger machinery) incorrect installation can blow the filter media apart, also, they are often constructed with layers so the coarse debris is filtered out first and finer material is collected by the inner layers of the filter.
Steve, your video on back pack blowers inspired me so much I went out and bought myself a Stihl 800c . Wow, will have more time for cold ones. Will get the leaves moved in half the time.. Thanks for all you do.😁
I've always told my customers that it doesn't matter which way it goes on, as long as you put it back on in the same direction as before you took it off. You're absolutely right, though. The only purpose it serves is for visual confirmation of a dirty filter.
Thanks for all your great 👍 information. I have a compressor in the back of the van, going on 34 years. Works faithfully every day. I use this filter , and keep spares on the van. I always thought the arrow was for the direction of fuel. Tank - Carburettor, so the old adage, you learn something every day , still holds good. . So big thank you for your great and very useful information.

Great video. Just learned something i didn’t know. I was installing these filters backwards all the time but now it will be done right. KUDOS to Steve. ✌🏻
Another great tip...going to put one on my 85 Yamaha 225dx tomorrow was trying to see a arrow earlier...couldn’t find it.. Well thanks to you, don’t need to now... Thank you again Steve.....
I was going to replace an oem filter with one of those, i figured there was proper way it should go but didnt know which cause there isnt an arrow on the one i bought. Another mystery solved Steve !
Good Information, makes sense....I bought a fuel filter for my JD riding lawn mower and noticed it was made in Isreal and I could not locate an Arrow which I thought should be on the filter for the reasons you gave. I got in on properly by chance ....Thanks !!!
Thanks Steve always wonder about that. Some filters don't have a arrow. Asked a company that made them once and they didn't know. It had no arrow and they said it didn't matter which way around it went but now we know. Thanks.😮
A good use for old filter, especially the automotive metal filters is to cut one off one end or if big enough to cut in halve, makes good mini funnels.
Thanks for sharing. I did that on a car carb in-line filter. Looked like it was ok but the flow was into the cartage and was full. A friend saw the arrow bought a new cartage flipped the body the right way around. Older car not a in tank fuel pump.
Another point, when the filter is installed the proper way, there is more surface area to filter the fuel due to the pleats being expanded, which will contain more contaminants, causing longer filter life.
Uh, strongly disagree, or I'm not getting your point. in the proper fitting the gas (petrol) coming in will exert pressure on the cone element around it's outside compressing the element. The pleats add structural integrity to the paper cone under this pressure. Reverse the flow and the gas will inflate the cone flattening the pleats. Also, surface area will not change, (unless it's elastic, and then you could argue it still doesn't change because the fibers just spread apart). If the surface area increased the weight of the element would would also increase since you'd be magically adding material. But obviously that's not happening.
@@ChuckD59 that may be true IF the there's pressure from tank to carburetor. Small engines are basically gravity fed.The filter may collapse but the engine will starve for fuel, hence shutting down. Then visual inspection of the fuel filter would show as STEVES video indicated.
@@JohnSmith-tv5ep You're correct, I misstated the direction of the force on the filter element. Normally the fuel is being drawn through, not pushed through. But that wasn't the point of my response to a comment that stated the pleats would expand and somehow increase surface area which are both erroneous. There's probably not enough pressure on the pleats to deform at all, and surface area does not change at all.
Thanks. My fuel filter looked fine, but had been installed backwards so I had no idea how much sediment had built up until I went to change it just now. I think I found the problem why my mower was dying after 30-45 minutes of mowing.
thank you so much for all your knowledge you have saved me so many hours of trial and era sorting out problems on small engine equipment. look after yourself and keep it up
Very encouraging video. Wish you are nearby so I can watch you how u start mine, a Britt stratt small engine sitting idle for years, no gas, no oil, of 10 years old. Tried and cleaned the gunk carburetor, no start; replaced spark plug as it had no resistance; testing shows sparks. Test showed low compression and cleaned the exhaust that’s plugged w oil. Still no start. I so much want to give up now as I have things to do other than fixing this dumb little engine.
Great video. Another point, if you have installed a fuel filter backwards and ran with it for any length of time, do NOT turn it around the correct way or you will flush all the dirt collected inside the filter into your carburetor!

Hi Steve, can a person use this kind of filters on diesel cars? Thanks mate

That filter goes in the direction you’re mowing! When you back up, you have to stop and turn the filter around.
Yep, kinda like putting the car into "R" for "Race" mode on the highway to go faster. 😎
BCtruck, BC Blades, I told that to my wife, she almost cut me off for a week!😂😂😂✌🏻️

you got it bACKWARDS... LOL
Sounds like really good point. My first thought was purely for ease of inspection.
An extra benefit is there's more surface area on the outside, so it won't get plugged as fast.
Surface area of one side of a sheet of paper is the same as the other. What is different is the narrow pleats can more rapidly fill and not use all the surface area. The area outside the media has move volume for fuel.
So you can see how dirty it is !
Glad you did this video. You don't know how many times I have yelled at people's videos for putting these on backwards.
