@The Deadid 1 The problem is that you believe consoles make money but they don't. It's software that makes that, wether you buy Xbox's games on your pc or on the console, you're still feeding into their ecosystem. Also, the normal person isn't going to go out and buy a rig with equal specs of the series x especially since that console is much more efficient, cheaper then an equal rig, more of a "plug and play" and easier experience overall. You would have to spend a hell of a lot more to get equal specs to series X, and even more to exceed it. Just my thoughts though.

The corporate blindness to reality in this conference was astounding.
Why do you think Windows has so much telemetry these days? MS changed their approach to user privacy as a result of this are trying to ensure it never happens again. But there are always those idiots that are against the corporations "spying" on them and are actually trying to turn off telemetry systems... Can't blame MS for not giving them what they want next time around then...
@@fredsas12 Companies are perfectly capable of gathering market research and forecasting demand without spying on people. This is a terrible rationalization for violations of users privacy.

How do you think Google seems to know what you are about to type even before the second or third letter? Its not an invasion of privacy if you agree to it..
The entire point of this telemetry gathering is to understand what the customer wants.. You do want companies to serve you better and increase satisfaction by giving you the right tools, right? Else, why buy their software over anyone else's?
@@fredsas12 Nobody needed telemetry or even feedback to know that no one wanted the Kinect. You could tell just by looking at people they didn't want the Kinect. It's not that deep, it was just common sense. You could argue this isn't an exaggeration either.
I'm always astounded how these companies are so out of touch with the consumer.

This reveal came out when I was 14 and now I'm turning 22 later this year... Time flies way too fast or its hard for me to accept that fact.

@@theblah12 No the PS5 reveal was lame. It was just silly "OoOoOo So MyStErY" nonsense that was played out a decade ago when they finally showed off the console. Next gen consoles have now turned into a PC Tower and a Router lol.
I swear Don Mattrick behaved like a shareholder as opposed to the boss with his lack of reverence for what consumers wanted.
What's equally impressive is corperations like this spend millions of dollars every year doing quantitative and qualitative market research to understand their consumers. How they blundered the xbox one to such an astonishing degree like this is beyond me.
The problem was that they thought they WERE doing what the consumers wanted. All the telemetry off the 360 was telling them that people were using it to watch Netflix etc. When I had my 360, at that point in time my friends list would normally show nobody in a game and everyone watching streaming content. Replicate that across the whole world and it’s very likely that they saw more people using the 360 as a media hub rather than a pure gaming machine.
Don’t get me wrong, they made a horrible, horrible mistake, but I think it’s probably quite understandable at the same time if you consider the information they must have been getting back.
I can tell you exactly where the bad data came from. When the gamer was away, the non gamers in the family just used the Xbox (360) to watch their shows. It is a very popular this to just kinda have the TV on in the background all day. This makes it look like (in the metrics) that the video functionality was the primary use case.

In general, at the time of PS3/xbox 360, they were convenient to use for streaming content because the rokus, amazon fire, smart tvs didn't exist or was expensive and so unnecessary if you had a console.
MS didn't see this, didn't understand it was a stopgap and the future of smart TVs and cheap streaming boxes/dongles.

Ditched the Kinect, brought out a serious backwards compatibility program, designed the best current-gen console in the Series X and totally got back on track. I own both consoles and enjoy the Sony exclusives the most but I think the Xbox UI (the chat function is a great example) and the xbox controller are vastly superior (the xbox pro controller in particular).
Yoshi The only thing that sucks ass is that even with the Xbox One X the UI is unbearably slow, especially when you have it loaded up with games. Hopefully the Series X speeds up the OS

not really but most people are ignorant as fuck. xbox literally said the reveal was about the console and games will be shown at e3 which they showed nothing but games. this wasnt a problem of microsoft not delivering it was a problem of dumb asses not listening. people often say e3 2013 was bad when it was better than sonys. but people mix e3 with the reveal. the only pitfall of microsoft e3 2013 was when phil spencer said 499 lol.. you could hear the crickets in the room and the look on his face said it all.

Bear Omega had you seen what happened to stadia?...Geforce Now in the other hand is doing okay but cloud computing as you call it is the same as if you were using your own GPU even Jenseen has said it multiple times the cuda software and hardware architect are the same when I say the same he stays that highend v100s or A100s will run the same software including even a Gtx1050 they all run the same architecture just like the self driving computers that they are putting in Tesla cars or other car manufacturers all those computers run the same software, code, architecture etz. Geforce Now was created for people that want to play evewhere without bringing with you your entire system that's it and for people that will have fast internet.

@AnEn Nobody thinks the industry isn't heading in a more digital direction, but the plug & play aspect of consoles, lending & borrowing games, has been a big part of their appeal for a long time compared to PC gaming, and burning that bridge behind them in the pursuit of a digital market was an absolutely pants-on-head ridiculous approach to take and was so completely unnecessary.
By taking away functionality from the physical media instead of simply making the digital proposition better to incentivise people to change their consumption habits.
The current approach of make physical games disc-dependent, and have digital copies account-bound, just seems absurdly obvious.
@AnEn but it was boneheaded as a strategy, because it clearly didn't work out for them, and it tried to sell a concept by creating an artificial disincentive for the old, rather than trying to sell the positive incentive of the new. The objective wasn't boneheaded, but the strategy really was.
There was never software ownership, you only ever have a software licence. That's always been the case.
I've already said the market being digital wasn't the mistake, it was what they thought they could sell with it (TV) and their attempt to go it alone by trying to strongarm options away from the consumer that turned into an easy win for their main competitor in the console space. THAT was stupid.

Microsoft thought they had the iPad of the television/living room here. This reveal really reminds me of an Apple keynote where they announce a whole new product category (but so much more dull). You can even tell that they expected more plaudits for each and every thing they highlight in this conference, and were shocked when nobody cared about the fancy new TV interface and just wanted video games.

He was literally at Sony's E3 conference reveal of the PS3. Working for EA though.
It wasn’t really a waste. The event was focused on introducing the system and the features that made it unique from the PS4.
And not only that, the time gap between here and when they showed off games was not even all that long, since this was a few weeks before E3.

@@kenshigo3833 Phil Spencer was under Windows up until 2017 when he was promoted to senior leadership and was given control of his own department (Xbox/Gaming) with his own budget rather than always answering to someone at Windows.
It's not a coincidence that we've gotten Gamepass, the greatest deal in gaming, bar none. As well as the acquisition of half a dozen top tier studios since 2017.
Microsoft was an absolute mess during this time: Windows 8, Windows Phone, Zune.

And until they told me _"nah no backwards compatability, nah you cant let your buddy play in the same room, he gotta buy his own copy of the game, nah you need to be always-online for the DRM, you're a crook even if you've payed, so we're gonna treat you like a crook"._ I just went "NOPE" from that day on.
Yes, they did backtrack a bit on some of that stuff, but the fact they even ATTEMPTED to pull all this shit on their own consumer base, nope. Never forget. Never got an Xbox One.

Yep, whole reason I bought a ps4. I went back to xbox because of the xbox one x, I wanted true backwards compatibility and Halo, and Sony never delivered on the backwards compatibility, and the kinect and all that spy bs from this conference died.
So, what do you think of your decision now? Are you still probably Playstation? Did you go back to Xbox? Are you a gamer of both brands?

I only remember the girl that was talking to Milo, she moved and I saw her black thong.......good times
One thing I find interesting, is how they originally discussed how Kinect V2 would be able to read your pulse from across the room. I got a laugh a few years later when re-watching it, thinking that obviously materialize. Then one day I was bored in a lecture and started browsing medical journals; turns out it actually does exist! It's picky about room lighting and skin color, but it does work. Surprising amount of stuff on Kinect in academic journals for computer science and medicine!
Obviously, the forced bundling of the device was unbelievably stupid and hurt the Xbone launch in a huge way. It's of zero use or interest to me from a game perspective, but I absolutely love it on my pc. The list of what it can do is too long to get into, but one feature I use often is it is a 3D scanner. Very cool technology, just not so great for gaming
If the PS3 reveal was Sony's darkest hour, then this reveal is Microsoft's.

Why they thought I would rather wave my hand around vs just pressing an intuitive button is mind boggling. Voice control can actually be useful but when it's implemented badly and forced it puts people off

It’s even worse.
Xbox spent the entirety of this generation just trying to recover from this reveal and prepare for the next gen instead. That's how bad this was. Phil Spencer saved Xbox from the brink.
If Don Mattrick stayed on and saw out his vision for Xbox I'm pretty sure Microsoft would've sold off the Xbox division to Amazon or Google.
Spencer has also made Xbox redundant. Why would I buy an Xbox when I can get all their exclusives on PC? If they even have any exclusives that are worth playing.
I also think not having any first party games designed for the Series X for a minimum of 2 years is a terrible idea.
You're having a brand new powerful piece of hardware being held back by a piece of hardware that was largely anemic even back in 2013. If I spend upwards of 500 on a new piece of hardware, I don't want my games being held back by 7 year old obsolete hardware.
Xbox is pretty much dead after next gen, it will be another failure.
@@gooduH786 Xbox despite its performance in hardware sales this gen isn't dead. Its too big to completely fail now. They've made way more revenue from their services from Xbox than 360 gen easily. Xbox won't beat PlayStation next gen either, but they can close the gap more so than current gen.
Barely, even the XSX is looking weak. It all depends on how good Halo Infinite is this fall, which 343 have yet to make a competent Halo game.
This was all so unbelievable... the 24 hour drm crap on a console that couldn't even play used games, and was also weaker than the ps4. Somehow they had the balls to make it 100 dollars/euros more expensive too. Oh and remember kinect?
Ps5 digital is same in some ways right? Can't play uses game although you have option to purchase disk version.

Phil is doing better for sure, but he keeps giving everyone reasons to skip an Xbox and get a PC. Very consumer friendly, but not good for sales.
@@RandomGamingMoments925 Yeah... Looks like they are more interested in building the platform and user base than selling consoles.... but IMO thats a good thing as long as they don't overlook the console and still ensure it is a great purchase for console players.

Kinect is a remarkable piece of hardware. Glad to see that it has finally found its true calling as a VR capture device :)
I believe the face ID in iphones is basically miniaturized Kinect tech.
@@acspicer it is. Xtion was the developer of the structured light depth capture technology that was used in Kinect 1 and Apple bought them out (and in the process set robotics research back a decade) and that's essentially what's in the iPhones these days

As long as Microsoft has more than a picture of there console (deep dive or UI) and shows off more than 4 exclusives. They already would have more stuff I was interested in at the Sony event IMO. Not saying it will be better or anything just don't think it would be that hard for Microsoft to top Sony especially with all their 1st party studios are starting to get ready to show stuff off.

I really enjoy watching the three of you talk about these kinds of reveals and events. Wouldn't mind at all if you did it for more than just major console events!
I still vividly remember this presentation.
I was very cynically laughing by the end of it and did not need to look for online reactions to know that this reveal was truly awful.
The (almost) endless articles of all the backpeddling leading up until launch was also amusing.
There was one silver lining though: The family sharing feature (that would have allowed sharing of games between Xbox accounts since they were going to all be tied to it) inspired Valve to implement the feature on Steam later that same year in October, a month before the Xbox One released.

What Mattrick failed to see was that when Xbox One was released smart tvs were becoming more popular and dumb led tvs were fading away.
It's a shame Smart TVs haven't adopted remotes as responsive as a game controller, though.

@@orijimi I love LG's magic controller, the sad thing is that apps like RUclips work tons better with the "d-pad" as oppose to Netflix that works so intuitively with the wiimote like pointer. My parents understood it without help.
@@echinas0908 Yeah, I can't stand how if you use your phone as a remote for a Smart TV, barely any apps can accept text input from your phone's keyboard, so searching for anything is a needlessly tedious task of d-padding around. Probably by design, seems to be the goal of everything web-based besides RUclips to pummel me with shit I don't care to see.

One of the biggest issues was that Microsoft didn't really know what they wanted the Xbox One to be, almost like an identity crisis. The Xbox One tried so hard to be the jack of all trades and master of none. It didn't do anything well, it just tried to do everything and fell completely flat

This needed to happen to Xbox, just like the PS3 needed to happen to Sony. If you are still bothered by something, that happened to you 10 years ago. Then you haven't learned anything or grown from that event!

Oh man. I remember watching this and the first few days after the reveal. The news about drm and always online etc kept coming and I was just completely blown away by how tone-deaf MS was and how much they fucked this whole thing up 😂 Good times
I was onboard for the new Xbox after having a 360 and when this happened and the drm stuff came out I was out. Rough.
Who ever designed the Xbox One controller should’ve gotten a huge raise.
But it missed key features suck as a hand grip and a headphone jack at launch

It really is amazing how a video game console reveal could how almost zero actual video game footage. Bs ea stuff, very little quantum break, and not exactly compelling call of duty footage. This really is terrrible

You could grind for achievements while having a counter snapped to the side showing how much progress you had made and how close you were to finally unlocking it. They should bring Snap back.
Xbox was innovative back then. Now PlayStation 5 is the innovative machine. PS5 has all the cool new features now.

LOL what Microsoft realized afterwards about Kinect, Sony already realised during PS2 with the EyeToy. There's only so far you can take that tech without physical handheld input devices to aid you.

This conference convinced me to skip the Xbox One... I owned 2-3 consoles per gen from SNES through 360, but this gen felt so lackluster and was the final nail in the coffin, pushing me to exclusive PC gaming.
Shit. I thought the Halo TV SHOW WAS CANCELLED YEARS AGO. I was surprised when Richard said it is still happening.

Just an absolute disaster. I got the 360 at launch and absolutely loved the console.
This presentation convinced me _not_ to buy its successor and as a result I ended up buying a Playstation for the first time, the PS4.

Yea I'm actually blown away by how they advertised it, I used the snap feature constantly, and I never used it like they did in the clip. It was best for walkthroughs (either video or text) and was better than using a phone because you didn't have to take your hands off the controller. I also enjoyed it for playing extremely relaxing/slow games and watching netflix/youtube. Then there was the fact that you could use it to play music in the background, but admittedly there are better ways to do that.
You could have even played your PS4 through the HDMI in port lol

Don Mattrick almost killed the entire brand.
From a non-US consumer, the Xbox One design was a ALL US ONLY. The Kinect space requirement was un-realistic to a lot of international customers; the cable-connection work only in US, etc.
@@glennhkboy Even for a lot of US consumers it made no sense. A huge chunk of the Xbox audience are kids or teens sitting in their small bedrooms where they wouldn't have space to use the Kinect, let alone having their own cable line to hook into the console.
Ok imagine when ole mate said “introducing Xbox one” and the Xbox one s revel played instead, no DRM trash and Kinect imagine how different this generation would go... coming from an Xbox fanboy myself

The fact there is no hdmi input for tv on xbox series x shows their focus is on power and games now. Not tv or any gimmicks.
Personally I’ve never used a gaming console for “tv” I believe most people watch Netflix, RUclips, etc. And those are readily available almost on any platform

@@aadipie these things, they take time. Xbox was in a really bad shape at the start of this gen. They could do nothing to build quality games because they didn't have the talent and look at those excellent services. Now they have the power, the studios the talent the services they're in a good position to fight it out now. Fingers crossed for good 1st party games.
