DF Retro EX: Konami E3 2010 - Revisiting THAT Notorious Press Conference
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 июл 2020
- There have been many poor E3 press briefings across history, but none are quite so weird, wacky, bizarre and surreal as the Konami's E3 2010 'event'. Join John Linneman and Audi Sorlie for a blow-by-blow look at one of the event's most notorious conferences.

Since Richard was present at this conference, he should have shut it down by moving his hands and shouting "ENOUGH WITH THIS LEVITY!"
Hahah
can u explain the joke? lol I don't get the reference
@@StayFractalesque Richard is known for his wild hand gestures when he speaks on camera.
@@StayFractalesque Richard moves his hands, and he once said 'Enough of this levity.'
@@schumachersbatman5094 yeah that moment stuck with me too it was so funny. What video was that from again?
I miss the times when E3s were funny bad, not just bad
I miss the times where E3 was actually something
@@stijnkulche5932 I miss the times when getting hyped for games meant something, not rehashed "safe route" shit we see today. Flip flop assets and call it a sequel. These recent AAA games don't even justify acquiring new hardware.
People are way to hyperbole here. E3 hasn't actually changed much with the exception of journalists being pissy because the convention is public now. E3 is only as good as the publishers who presents interesting new games. In the past two years that wasn't really the case because a new generation of consoles is coming up and COVID-19 is hindering the full potential of every gaming related convention. So many people wish E3 to die, yet I've seen so many annoyed comments about this lame "Summer of Gaming" invented by Keighley and IGN. These folks who want to see E3 dry out to put out their own content. If this was a simple test run this year, well, they better come up with a better concept next year when there are hopefully no pandemic excuses anymore.
@@TheAufziehvogel E3 is dying because publishers would prefer to do their own shows instead of sharing the spotlight.
Dunno what you are watching E3 has been killer for years
OH MY GOD. This conference is legendary. I've never been able to watch it through without pausing to de-cringe
LOOOOL same
Anyone who can watch it all, without pausing and full audio feed, is a masochist. It is extremely hard to watch.
It's more sad that at least they were still trying back then with high output of full, flat priced products with some creativity, but microtransactions and gambling have infected the best publishers. We are seeing the pivoting change from the 2008 crash (GFC) and mass migration of all the jobless, sleazy execs and MBAs from finance into the booming gaming industry - and they brought their banking fee-based, nickel and diming, consumer-tricking schemes with them.
Imagine seeing it in person and being unable to stop it and take a break. I don't think I would be able to handle it.
You guys have to do the Star Wars Hans solo dance challenge now that you said it.
I want to see the Star Wars Kinect Han Solo dance challenge please.
Please
Ghey
No comedian or artist could ever come up with this, it's the most spontaneous form of cringe and embarrassment possible in a natural way.
Rights. It’s so bad it’s good 😂
Haha! This is a perfect example of reality that surpasses our imagination! 😅😂
idk always looked like a andy kaufman bit to me.
There's nothing natural about this cringe. It's straight up supernatural
Most console reveals are like this. In the Ps4 Pro reveal I remember Marc Cerney dancing around the stage spewing out a lot of bullshit with bullshots playing behind him. Xbox always seem to drag out "Major Tom", who you never see for years util they release another console. When Microsoft promise your console to be a powerhouse, then the games are under 30fps within 2 years of release Major Nelson is nowhere to be found.
"It's like your dad trying to explain his foot fetish to you"
Who said that
@@BigBoss7777777 20:53
That's a very specific analogy.
Can relate
As a guy who has foot fetish I can't fathom the idea of being indifferent to a beautiful woman's feet. It's like a curse and a blessing. You know others know it's weird but that in itself just amplifies the fetish that much more.
"You will be sucked" is my favourite grammar mistake of all time
I've been pushing XXXX YYYY XXXX YYYY ever since 2010. Hasn't worked for me yet.
They should add it to one of their games to get infinite Heath
Have you tried to unplug and replug the controller?
You have to press it again...
That guy totally screwed up the Konami code...
Fun you guys covered this legendary conference, and some insightful comments. However the cringe of the moments doesn't come across anymore since you guys talked through everything, even the "best" moments, and covered the awkward silences and hall atmosphere.
I have to agree made a a chaotic and hilarious conference seem very dry and boring.
They outright cut out some of the cringe too. Example: "One of the best things about hip-hop is... BARACK OBAMA" That line never made it into the video, feelsbadman
@@Hachado Especially after watching DF's hilarious coverage of the Xbox one and PS3 reveal events
1:01:18 That gruesome, demonic, serial killer-like DEATH STARE is my personal favourite part of the show! 😂
It NEVER gets old! 😅
Lmao that's why I clicked on this vid
Goodness, he's scaring ME
Watching this live was the most amazing video game related experience of my life. I thought I was losing my mind.
We will never witness a conference of this caliber of hilarity ever again.
The Xbox 1 reveal was probably equally bad for the company (or worse) but not even close as entertaining. This is the most legendary for sure, PS3 Ridge Racer! next 😆
@@markwebster4996 Blizzcon 2018 comes to mind with the mobile Diablo thing
12:05 Genuinely thought Audi was a native English speaker (and a pretty eloquent one). I've certainly never noticed any unnatural pauses. You speak better English than me.
20:53 WOW that is definitely an analogy lmao
Finally a good presentation is covered on this channel.
R.I.P. La Parka.
Though two years late, but i remember hearing about his passing while watching Telemundo. real sad :(
Legendarily Bad. I will never forget this press conference.
Wan mirrion troopa!
I'm just here for the hype Rave Racer OST playing in the background
Me seeing Zone sama in the comment section 1:01:25
probably the last person I'd expect to be here
@@Lisa_Minci96 yeah honestly this is weird
Love you Zone!
Zone's animations are responsible for producing ONE MIRRION TROOBS in my pants.
Welp. I've finally made the big time. That is me at 11:13. Easily my strangest E3 memory but this moment is the gift that has kept on giving. 🤣
Congratulations! You're a part of gaming history
I took notice of you in the video before reading this comment, because the look on your face. I can't quite tell if that look of confusion is acting. Looks semi-authentic. Admit it: there was a part of you that was genuinely thinking "What is happening right now?"
ONE MILLION TROOPS, thank you guys love these conference retrospectives 🙏
Wooooow. 😯
Hey DF, I just wanna say this is my favorite series you guys do. I'd love to see you go over nintendos 2012 e3 sometime. keep at it!
Don't you mean 2010?
Ravi Drums?
Konami E3 2010: “It comes off as well as your dad trying to explain his foot fetish to you.” - Audi Sorlie, the GOAT.
He must have had some experience...
Audi is the type of guy who only gives you one chuckle when the rest of the crowd is dying of laughter.
I'm Norwegian so I can't laugh. I'm born this way, don't hate me.
The only time I can think of "being a celebrity on stage" working is when Tom Hanks was contractually obligated to do a thing for Sony and he spent the whole time ragging on them
Oh Dear, I was not expecting you guys to react to this but thank you. This one is legendary
Ohh man,I've been waiting for this so long.legendary conference.keeps entertaining us more than any recent Konami game, never gets old. Thank you DF
Who knew Audi's obscure knowledge of Mexican wrestlers would come in handy?
Like a British household, roasts are becoming a regular Sunday tradition for Digital Foundry.
Audi Sorlie is sweet and positive, but I miss Richard's wise words and geezerish harshness.
I have been waiting for this. Thank you DF
I wish richard was in this one too, because his sarcastic comments would be sooo hillarious, and this conference itself was a goldmine for that.
Yes! Heard the Giant Bomb crew talk about this recently. So happy its back in the spotlight. I miss this era of E3.
ahahahaha thank you for doing commentary for this one. Truly a masterpiece
I only knew about this conference before cause of Crowbcat
Strangely, I just rewatched his cut of this conference 3 days ago.
The early 2010s weren't a great time for games? You guys are buggin' on that one. 2010 in particular was a fantastic year. (Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, StarCraft II, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Super Meat Boy, Limbo, Deadly Premonition, Dead Rising 2, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell Conviction, Mafia II.)
2010 was the dark ages of Japanese games. I think the popularity and impact of Call of Duty and how the stars aligned for Microsoft with the Achievements and Xbox Live was the only reason they found success with the 360. I don’t see them ever getting that kind of success again.
Yep. Microsoft have no clue of what they're doing
Amazing, I never would have thought I'd have watched this conference from beginning to end. It's only because you guys made the commentary so enjoyable that I managed to survive the infamous Konami E3 2010 conference, one decade after it aired!
What a crazy timeline we're in...
When this infamous conference went down... I was not watching it live because I wasn't much of a Konami person at the time... I kept hearing people talk of the Konami conference at the time as the BEST CONFERENCE they've ever seen in their lives on a forum I used to frequent... but I would soon find out they meant it in the sarcastic/ironic sense. I had no idea cringe could reach those levels... and I was well aware of E3 cringe even by this point... but nothing at this kind of level at the time... wow
This series is my fav! Please do more :)
God I love these episodes! Keep up the great work guys :D
Back when E3 conferences were held in random high school auditoriums.
Keep doing these, they're really really good, dudes!
Please keep doing these!!!
I enjoy you revisiting these conferences I didn't had the chance to see
I had never seen this before... i'm glad my first experience was through you folks
This was only 2010 but it looks like it was filmed in the late 1990s.
Rumor has it then when you die and go to hell you find yourself at this conference for eternity.
Even though I didnt play any of these games, this brought back the AAA 2010 games that came out. God of war 3, black ops 1, halo reach, red dead, bad company 2, and bioshock 2. Good times
2010 had so many strong titles
Black ops is for pregnant women.
Kojima Productions couldn't actually get the Idea to Pan out. Kojima actually went to Platinum Games after it was technically cancelled and asked if they might be Interested. Platinum only accepted with the agreement that the setting be changed to after MGS 4 ( instead of between 2 and 4 ) to have more creative freedom with the story.
quite possibly the best and most valuable to preserve game conference to date, not even exaggerating
This still has my #1 E3 moment which I like to call “The Konami Stare Of Death”. I still have the clip of it, when someone added the music from JAWS to the background. CLASSIC!
OMG yes! That part BROKE me!
Dont know why I thought DF have already covered this recently. It kept popping in my feed today and I was surprised the video is from yesterday
I love how it's such a small little stage, and yet they bring out wrestlers and the Glee brigade.
Woke up earlier than expected, but noticed this video was posted. So instead of going back to sleep, I made coffee and waffles to enjoy alongside this madness xD
I'm still sad Steel Battalion hasn't been ported to VR yet. A VR port would have been such a perfect fit :(
Absolutely love Lord of Shadows, shame the 2nd didn't hold up. That first big fight against the Ice giant... back then it looked amazing and so much fun.
This will forever be the best E3 press conference, nothing will beat it.
I literally had a day dream the other day of you guys doing a DF Retro of this conference. I thought it would be so silly to do.
the dance masters portion of this conference always makes me laugh, i'm a sucker for those scripted "casual" back and forth conversations, it always cracks me up.
34:06 I love the way they edited in some covering stuff onto the girls to show a little less skin than what was really in the footage. :D
1:01:30 The only E3 conference with real life clipping issues
Audi is the type of person where the jokes are rather unreliable but also hit you the hardest by far when they do. He is surely a precious character.
I want MS press conference:Usher Edition
38:18 my man here lookin like 80's rockstar
HOLY SHIT JOHN I was just watching that conference yesterday lmao wow
I survived the Konami conference 😎 Thanks for yet another great episode. Question/suggestion to DF: any chance of going back all the way to the 1995 E3? That would be super interesting and to hear what’s your thoughts about that conference. Cheers!
When I spotted the Y,Y,Y and X,X,X guy in the thumbnail, I knew that the time has finally come!!!!!
You’ll be sucked!
Damn, this is THE conference! I wonder what they're smoking..
I love these retro conference videos.
Why Richard I would of loved hearing Richard's opinion on this
I was there! E3 2010 was the first and only E3 i ever got to go to. Shit was so fun but these conferences we didnt get to see in person probably for the best haha.
We really need another DF take on this with Richard, Alex and John to go over this.
The most memorable E3 conference ever
Wow, another video , this weekend is trully DF weekend for me....
Thumbnail instantly makes me think of Crowbcat's video on this.
I go back every year to watch the cut of this its just so funny
I just know that is going to be a great episode
Now every time I see a DF notification I hope to see something like "Cerny invited us for a closer look at the PS5"
it's interesting to me that the game Neverdead got a solid 50 critics score and 50 users score on meta-credit. That's what I call a perfect average game! Very mediocre! So mundane!
The irony is the director and producer of NeverDead was the director of Metal Gear: Ghost Babel and Acid series.
He lost the track right there. Shinta Nojiri
I am leaving a comment as per instructions for the Star Wars Kinect challenge. Make it happen, John
I've never seen this! Sometimes things just go into the land of weird on it's own accord. This looks like one of those times!
I forgot about this but you keep pulling me back in
Audi is so wrong about the "quality' of this conference that its funny. He empathizes to the point of blinding himself.
25:13 That has happened so much and it really comes off as companies thinking that it will make the products more relatable because people are seeing someone they know, like an actor. - One of the times that it worked perfectly was with Keanu Reeves "crashing" the CyberPunk presentation, but only because he played a character in the friggin' game, so it makes sense. AND, if he does something there's usually something genuine about it. - But then you have something like the "Fast and Furious" game (which looks like it came one or two generations too late) presented by Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez this or last year. And while it was very similar to how Keanu kinda read his lines while having some fun in between, nobody cared for a "Fast and Furious" game or Diesel and Rodriguez being there, so it was just awkward to the point that the whole presentation felt like it was from 10 years before. And it didn't help it was, I believe, shoehorned in at the very end of the VGAs.
Whoever comes up with the presentations just needs to think a little more about it as to whether or not it makes sense.
But yea, many decisions might come from the suits above. A company like CD Projekt Red doesn't have that issue, as they pretty much have total control over their stuff. And while the "Fast and Furious" game is by a Codemasters studio, the publisher is Bandai Namco. Sooo... coincidence that it's another Japanese company who comes up with an awkward presentation?... It's probably also an issue of Asian companies (or companies that come from other cultures, even like Ubisoft, which seems to be in its own French world) not understanding how to deal with presenting something to a more "modern west" audience.
It certainly didn't help that Michelle Rodriguez mispronounced Tekken, saying it like "Teh-ken" instead of "Tech-kin". That whole presentation just came across really phony, honestly.
I love the background music at 12:32 sounds like late 90’s Korean rave
So many memorable moments in this conference.
*Way, way better than the DVD audio commentaries! That stare down, OMG.*
I never leave comments, but I felt compelled to leave one for this video. The guest in this video is about as dull as dishwater and made this whole experience of one of the best/worst press conferences ever to be a total snooze fest.
I wish it was John and Richard on commentary and maybe Alex too.
The dude making excuses for everything is driving me a little crazy
He's sucking the energy out of it for me
@@CecilMcW00t lol for real.
both of them are. the channel is politically correct
This conference is single-handedly responsible for me saying "very very exercise" every time I walk into a gym or go out for a run.
41:03 I really want to see you guys do the Hans solo dance challenge
It's amazing that this is already a decade ago...
It's too bad though that Konami pretty much ruined all of their IPs. They could've done a lot of remasters & collections on current consoles, but they still have not.
Zone of the Enders 1 should've gotten a PS4 remaster as well.
They could've done a _Lords of Shadows_ collection on PS4.
They could've done a complete Silent Hill remaster collection.
They could've done a complete Metal Gear collection but they haven't.
And a lot of Dance Dance Revolution home releases :(
They could've brought back Rocket Knight...
I just watched through this entire thing yesterday why didn't I wait a day!?
The moment Konami shat itself. And was never really the same ever after.
This video should have ONE MILLION VIEWS
Excited for this one
11:14 Seeing Nick from 4PlayerNetwork pop up here never fails to make me laugh at his reaction.
This is the best E3 conference of all time.
Sony 2006 and Nintendo 2008 were pure cringe, but Konami 2010 not only beat them in that regard, but it was also genuinely hilarious.
Audi is like that dude everyone knows who has had so many jobs that he has a story about almost anything.
The press conference to end all press conferences. And that's saying a lot considering it was the same year Microsoft debuted the Kinect with theatrics and prerendered footage for an hour and a half.
For better or worse, there's never been a more engaging press conference since...
41:00 Still waiting for the Star Wars Kinect Han Solo dance-off.
