One thing the Xbox One launch provides is a good laugh, and I'm not saying that in a condescending manner. I genuinely enjoy watching the mess previous Xbox execs made and am grateful Phil Spencer revived a crucial gaming brand in the industry.

The teleprompters were right in front of the stage, along with the screens for the folks playing the live demos. That's how I knew that Killzone would be shown, since I had to walk in front of those screens to get around a cameraman from some outlet that blocked the walkway up front with all of his equipment
Consider me a DF Retro EX veteran! I can't get enough! I think I've pretty much seen all of them and I'll definitely check out any that I haven't seen lol. I love the more positive vibes and the added historical context.
It's heartening that that UE4 engine demo here at the PS4 launch actually looks pretty drab compared to games using it now. So that UE5 demo should be a glimpse of real potential that may even be surpassed by later games.
This decade has been such a blur for me that the PS4 reveal feels like yesterday. Some part of me finds it surreal that it's 2020, and not the middle of the 2010s still. Is it just me with a terrible grasp of time? Anywho, carry on.
@@TheScure Interesting indeed. I'm sure there's some mundane scientific explanation about how our perception of time changes with age and how our memory also skews it, but it's still a very surreal feeling. I feel like I've spent 3 years into the decade in the place of 10, like I'm still in 2013 waiting for Black Flag and KZ Shadow Fall to be released. Haha.
It is the same for many of us I think. A lot has happened in our lives in this timespan and a lot has happened in the world, really. Also let's not forget that the amount and cadence of information circulating has grown and grows still, thanks to the web and social media. So all this is condensed in our memory.
Xbox user remember $500 for a vcr and spy camera, cancelled exclusives, Xbox exclusives becoming multiplats, batteries for controllers in 2013 (and again in 2020), under powered console and than being charge another $500 for a better console, losing cod exclusivity, ton of failed exclusives (dead rising, quantum break, sunset overdrive, sea of thieves, crackdown 3, halo 5, halo mcc, bleeding edge etc) Other than that Xbox had a great gen 😊
Andy Walford I don’t get what’s wrong with batteries either? I have many PS3 controllers, all have bad or horrible internal batteries from age. Who can keep all their internal batteries healthy of a controller collection from a older gen console that you rarely use? It’s ridiculous! Along with the cheap materials it’s why I hate the Dual Shock 3. I can pick up any controller from my Xbox 360 collection, pop in a set of batteries and it’s ready to go 🤷♂️ Love it! Plus my rechargeable battery in my Xbox One controller seems to last twice as long as in the Dual Shock 4...
I'm so glad to hear you talking about covering Detroit on the pc. When it came out, I was eagerly waiting for the video of it, but it never came. I hope you get to it at some point. Awesome work guys.
Cool idea to revisit this conf ! What a ride for the ps4. Two things i wanted to react to : - I never see people speak about the marketing aspect of the led light on dualshock 4. For me the idea was to let people directly know someone is playing ps4. At the time of youtube and twitch, it’s a perfect free ad. Otherwise they would have allow to turn it off. - other thing is Square continues to develop luminous engine. There is currently a new IP developed with it by people who worked on FFXV. Not FFXVI but waiting to see what it will look like on next gen ! Promising engine.
I actually rewatched this and all the other ps4 and ps4 pro reveals again shortly after the ps5 reveal was delayed just to get a taste of the production value Sony is teasing for this upcoming event. Great video as always. That was a lot of fun to experience again with your always amazing commentary right to the last second.
I think one thing they did really well with the Killzone video is that it starts off like "yeah there's a guy there with a controller but is this actually in game or just a pre rendered intro", especially to the untrained eye. It leaves you guessing for a while then suddenly boom, he's playing the game, it looks exactly the same as what you've just been watching in awe.
Time goes by so fast.... I remember watching this live. The killzone gameplay was amazing... The ps4 was the first console i got right at launch. I still remember the feeling of buying my fisical copy of Infamous second son
I liked how mgsv implemented its second screen. In game using the idroid doesn't pause time so you have to be aware of your surroundings whenever you use it and be quick. Having the idroid app on your phone be used to control it worked really well since instead of blocking the screen with the idroid menu and going through clunky navigation, you can just look down at your phone and tap quickly. It was intuitive and a lot more immersive
These videos when you guys are just shooting the shit and commenting freely are relaxing and so enjoyable. Please do more of these; it's almost like listening to and watching a long podcast!
50:39 When that explosion happened for the first time. That was the literal moment I knew, I was buying a PS4 day one. And I did with killzone lol I still have em
I really wish Digital foundry would go in depth into shareplay. One of my favorite and most underated features. Not only letting you view another players PS4 stream with them having to share it publicly, but yes they can pass the controller to you to help them out. It also lets you try out a game your friend has. Plus it gives couch coop capability to someone who doesn't even own the game! Sure it isn't as pretty but latency isn't bad and a 720p stream or 1080p on pro is pretty sweet for what it's trying to accomplish
DarkTibbles Share play has horrible lag, playing sports games is basically unusable. 720p and horrible latency, tried many times playing Madden and it’s a disaster. A nice feature to possibly watch someone else’s game but needs to severely be improved
@@tears2040 You probably have shit internet or your using WiFi because I've used Share Play many times and it worked great some latency but perfectly playable on Fifa, A way out, and uncharted.
Josue M Just because you can’t tell your head from your ass doesn’t make your opinion valid...... Share play not only is crippled by 720p, it’s also hindered by latency and even lower frame rates. By the way I have the fastest internet available residentially in United States at Fiber over 1000Mb up/down
I made it all the way through to the end! Love these kinds of videos from you guys! Watched over the course of a few days and really enjoy your commentary. Looking forward to more.
PS1 holds that crown. It was the start of these games that were all made iconic ON THE PS1! Some are exceptions here but these include: The Resident Evil series, Castlevania SOTN, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawks Pro Skater series, Tenchu 1 and 2, Driver, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot 1 and 2, Spyro, Syphon Filter, Nightmare Creatures, Clock Tower, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal, Dino Crisis, the Tomb Raider series, with some of those still being remembered to this day! Some of those are STILL going strong to this day! Many of the best franchises started on PS1. It was the time of great gaming ideas!
@jvalex18 I guess people rate based on personal experience as well. So even if something was great they wouldn't put it high because of having limited experience with it.
The fact that Killzone Shadow Fall actually looked better at release, kinda makes up for the "downgrade" in Watchdogs. Let's hope we see another Killzone game tomorrow, and within less than 48 minutes into the event.

A bunch of things were really bad when Mattrick ran xbox, but at least it spawned a whole lot of hysterical memes. That retrospective episode should be hilarious.
Spencer was part of the team that came up with those ideas. Mattrick was doing the presentations and interviews but Spencer agreed with the original vision for the brand. He's admitted that himself. So let's not pretend that Mattrick was acting alone with all the decisions that were originally made. He had a team of execs that all made the decision together. Here's Spencer admitting: "I see it sometimes on Twitter and other places, where people want to call me out as somebody who was at the leadership table when decisions were made for Xbox One, and that's absolutely true. "I've never tried to wash my hands or distance myself from my role on the Xbox One leadership team through the announcement of the console, E3 2013 - I was there, and I'm not trying to create some kind of false history that makes me look better, to say I wasn't there, I wasn't involved. I'm going to take responsibility for those decisions, absolutely, good ones and bad ones. I have to, otherwise I don't have any credibility in what I do going forward. "I wouldn't trust me if all of a sudden I tried to say 'well, I was asleep during those meetings'. It would be silly. I was there."
I'm very happy you do talk so positively about Driveclub ^-^ The shut down of Evo and the (rather early) abandonment of its server infrastructure truly hurt. It really deserved better. I'm #1 in Driveclub worldwide so if the team of DF has any questions just ask them :) I suppose you cover the PS5's (hopefully soon) reveal in a similar kind of fashion :3 I'm looking forward to it! Thx for reading :]
One game that I thought did the “second screen experience” right was Assassin’s Creed 4. You didn’t use the second screen while you played the main game. Instead you sent your crew on jobs throughout the day and reaped the rewards or losses in the main game. It made the second screen a side way to continue while you were at work.
Thank you for this, it's always kinda warming to listen to your recollections and stuff, nearly a parasocial experience. I watched all of these reveal videos, including this. I would really love seeing you revisit some more of Nintendo reveals.
I never liked this game. I bought it played it for a bit and never touched it again. The thing that I disliked the most was that there weren’t any real tracks and it was very arcade-ish.
@@N1ckZ Well you bought it for the wrong reasons then, because being arcadey and having fictional tracks is precisely why it's such an outstanding game. The best racer on PS4 by a mile. If you wanted realism from your racers then there's a clogged market of games available. Every damn game is a sim wannabe these days, so DriveClub was a breath of fresh air in the genre. The arcade racer is almost extinct at this point. NFS is the only big arcade brand these days and when was the last time they pushed out a truly great game?
@@W0lf_91 If I have to state "in my opinion" in a comments thread on RUclips about a video game then I can't help you. Common sense doesn't need to be stated when all views on entertainment are subjective. Also, I like how you disagree but provide no actual input or argument as to why. What value does that give to your "opinion" then?
A lot of the other events that were due to happen in the next few weeks have now been shifted a week or two back - based on that it's probably safe to assume the PS5 reveal will be within the next 14 days or so. Optimistically, it'll be this coming Thursday, with a date announce tomorrow.
18:00 The irony... Devs told Microsoft that 512MB of RAM was what was needed and that's what they delivered for Xbox360 instead of PS3. Then Microsoft pooped on all their easy development goodwill with their weirdo slow ram and ESRAM nonsense for Xbone. I was all for the 360 during that generation, but having Mark Cerny as game designer-turned system architect was pretty genius.

It's far above and B3YOND what's currently the norm!!!🔥🔥🔥 Regular 3d Audio is good enough but this, this is something truly special.
Sony 1st parties kept me into gaming this gen, the only ones still treating gaming as an art form anymore. The rest of AAA including MS gave up, pivoting towards microtransaction riddled, addiction scams injected in rinse repeat trash that makes billions - then getting frustrated with us for not being excited boy band like fangirls while we receive a far less, usually broken messes.
EXACTLY. Fanboys keep saying exclusives don't matter.....this gen would have been garbage without PS exclusives. Lets be honest, third party games have been subpar compared to previous generations. The mainstream AAA industry went in a really bad direction and MS straight up followed them into the shithole. People say sony 1st party games are overrated. I don't think they even get enough credit for going against the grain of the mainstream industry.
Nah you just prefer SP 3rd person games, I'm a MP guy and the genre is alive and well but I don't dump on SP games just because I don't play them much.

5:20 DUDE the feels :) I watched this right before i moved from my home in Sweden to China.
And now, i'm about to return back home to Sweden next month.
Watching this is like nostalgia + life chapter beginning and end all in one box.
I'M NOT CRYING, YOU ARE!
The teleprompters were right in front of the stage, along with the screens for the folks playing the live demos. That's how I knew that Killzone would be shown, since I had to walk in front of those screens to get around a cameraman from some outlet that blocked the walkway up front with all of his equipment
Nice
Interesting!
Cool lol but you spoiled the best reveal for yourself
Consider me a DF Retro EX veteran! I can't get enough! I think I've pretty much seen all of them and I'll definitely check out any that I haven't seen lol. I love the more positive vibes and the added historical context.
It's heartening that that UE4 engine demo here at the PS4 launch actually looks pretty drab compared to games using it now. So that UE5 demo should be a glimpse of real potential that may even be surpassed by later games.
If we get games that look better than Matrix Awakening UE5 demo in a few years I'm gonna shit a brick.
@@JamanWerSonst what😂😂😂😂
I watched the whole video at normal speed without skipping anything ;) Thanks for the good commentary.
Yeah Killzone still looks very amazing.
Listening to Ridge Racer music playing in the background is so bittersweet...
This decade has been such a blur for me that the PS4 reveal feels like yesterday. Some part of me finds it surreal that it's 2020, and not the middle of the 2010s still. Is it just me with a terrible grasp of time? Anywho, carry on.
I have the same feeling, it's interesting. 2000-2010 felt so much longer, maybe this is how it feels when you start to grow up.
Yeah, this decade felt so much shorter
You just gettin old. Happens. Time goes faster and faster and faster, then you gasp “wtf,” b4 you kick the bucket. 😑. It’s life. 😑
Made it to the end, but had to make a pause to do other stuff, I love these retrospectives on to console presentations, they are awesome.
What ill remember this console generation by is great games, sony did an awsome job
Xbox user remember $500 for a vcr and spy camera, cancelled exclusives, Xbox exclusives becoming multiplats, batteries for controllers in 2013 (and again in 2020), under powered console and than being charge another $500 for a better console, losing cod exclusivity, ton of failed exclusives (dead rising, quantum break, sunset overdrive, sea of thieves, crackdown 3, halo 5, halo mcc, bleeding edge etc)
Other than that Xbox had a great gen 😊
@@H.E.M. lol
Batteries for controllers is still actually a good idea. Just get rechargeable which last way longer
Plus my rechargeable battery in my Xbox One controller seems to last twice as long as in the Dual Shock 4...
and it went out to sell over 110m units in 7 years. legendary stuff.
And? You talk like they share their profits with ya 😂
One of the most memorable reveals ever. I was 16 years old when I first saw this on the livestream.
But how many other reveals did you actually remember if you were only 16? 🤷🏽♂️

I'm so glad to hear you talking about covering Detroit on the pc. When it came out, I was eagerly waiting for the video of it, but it never came. I hope you get to it at some point. Awesome work guys.
Yeahh! I really wanna see their coverage of it.
Yes John, I made it to the end /o/
But now Rich : WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR WATCH DOGS STORY :)))
I love Watch Dogsssss..well, the first one, at least.

The fact that this channel hasn't hit 1 million subs is beyond me.
It has actually
I think one thing they did really well with the Killzone video is that it starts off like "yeah there's a guy there with a controller but is this actually in game or just a pre rendered intro", especially to the untrained eye. It leaves you guessing for a while then suddenly boom, he's playing the game, it looks exactly the same as what you've just been watching in awe.
Made it till the end, people enjoy this stuff John! 😁
Time goes by so fast.... I remember watching this live. The killzone gameplay was amazing... The ps4 was the first console i got right at launch. I still remember the feeling of buying my fisical copy of Infamous second son
Mark Cerny is a gem within the gaming world.
Love these type of videos. Fun to hear fellow nerds banter about old console conferences. My OG PS4 still going strong! cant wait for PS5.

When that explosion happened for the first time. That was the literal moment I knew, I was buying a PS4 day one. And I did with killzone lol I still have em
Me too :)
Alley Crockett when I heard 399, I also knew that was the moment i was buying it
You don't really think of PS4 as being old until you realize that they touted the ability to stream to Ustream at the reveal.
Yeeesss, I have been waiting for another one of these!
I saw it till the end my friends. Great content!
Did people actually USE Shareplay? The communication on that wasn’t expressed very well
DarkTibbles Share play has horrible lag, playing sports games is basically unusable. 720p and horrible latency, tried many times playing Madden and it’s a disaster. A nice feature to possibly watch someone else’s game but needs to severely be improved
@Omega Red you are a real hero, defeating bloodborne bosses with network latency, the ultimate difficulty
Ps4 is one of the greatest console ever made. Not on par with snes or ps2, but definitely in my top 5 greatest console.
I have stayed until the end :)
I did it over 2 days and I left it playing in the background while I was doing some work and enjoying the commentary.
2 hours of DF? I’m always down for this ♥️♥️♥️
hell yesssssss
The fact that Killzone Shadow Fall actually looked better at release, kinda makes up for the "downgrade" in Watchdogs. Let's hope we see another Killzone game tomorrow, and within less than 48 minutes into the event.
Watchdogs is a freaking multiplataform, not a exclusive
and clearly PC gamers are so stupid and selfish
Agni's Philosophy also ran on an ultra highend PC with a GTX680. Nothing quite beat that demo on consoles to this day.
I actually thoroughly enjoy these videos. I like how you guys look back at reveals and we see what things happened and didn’t happen and why and how things have changed. Definitely watched to the end and can’t wait for more!
Thanks for these videos guys. I’ve been feeling really unwell recently with lots of complications and these videos give me brief escape. I remember watching this and it really does only feel like a few years ago. So much has changed in such a short space of time. My life is totally different to what it was in 2013 (unfortunately). Can't wait for the Xbox one retrospective that one was so bad withe the DRM stuff
A bunch of things were really bad when Mattrick ran xbox, but at least it spawned a whole lot of hysterical memes.
That retrospective episode should be hilarious.
Say thanks to Mattrick for that shit event. He really hurt Xbox forever
Here's Spencer admitting:
"I see it sometimes on Twitter and other places, where people want to call me out as somebody who was at the leadership table when decisions were made for Xbox One, and that's absolutely true.
Xbox failed to openly discuss their DRM plans in the Xbox One reveal or their E3 presentation.
I made it to the end! Please please please do more of these!
I fully expect a ton of sassy Richard Commentary on this
I had no idea he was this sassy!
Thank you for this, it's always kinda warming to listen to your recollections and stuff, nearly a parasocial experience. I watched all of these reveal videos, including this. I would really love seeing you revisit some more of Nintendo reveals.
I still play Driveclub. Rip servers :(
Lattrodon same here, really sad
I never liked this game. I bought it played it for a bit and never touched it again. The thing that I disliked the most was that there weren’t any real tracks and it was very arcade-ish.
@@N1ckZ
Well you bought it for the wrong reasons then, because being arcadey and having fictional tracks is precisely why it's such an outstanding game.
“The best PS4 racer by a mile”... in your opinion. I mean, it isn’t, no way, but whatever.
@@W0lf_91
If I have to state "in my opinion" in a comments thread on RUclips about a video game then I can't help you. Common sense doesn't need to be stated when all views on entertainment are subjective.
Also, I like how you disagree but provide no actual input or argument as to why. What value does that give to your "opinion" then?
I watched the whole thing while working on backgrounds. Thanks guys

The irony...
Made it out through the entire video! Great video by the way.
We need more of these retro reveals! that’s crazy how y’all just made this one as soon as I finished watching all them yesterday 😅😂😊
Behold i kept my promise and lo i supporteth thee via Patreon! And i enjoy all things tech and PlayStation so it was nice to listen (while i work) to little foot notes that i didn't know happened during this time in History.
I highly recommend you guy's cover PlayStation 5's 3D Audio and what that means for the future of gaming in PC and Xbox!

Also yes, I did watch all the way to the end.
I enjoy hearing this again with Alex's Pc background observations added. I forgot about Knack (Wow look at all those polys I thought at reveal then) Killzone intro was the game intro that blew me away. I did not think it was real until I saw "clueless gamer" Conan playing the game early. Conan late show he was aiming all over the ceiling and the floor :)
Knack was about how many particles they could shove on-screen at the time, Killzone was pushing more polygons
I meant to say background in pc, bringing his observations to the console analysis. It’s great to hear many experts from various backgrounds.
I wasn’t sure if the particles where actual polys, I remember them having cool physics either way when hitting the floor after dying or shedding back small.
i love when you guys do this stuff, any roundtable talk with the 3 of you is entertaining and interesting
