If nintendo sues sony over this, they will open a pandora's box of litigation. Sega can sue nintendo for stealing the planets/gravity mechanics from sonic adventure 2 to use in super mario galaxy. Also, the gravity mechanics in Mario Kart 8 are ripped straight from Sonic Riders Zero Gravity. IYKYK.

Actually, gravity mechanics were ripped from Crash Nitro Kart, a little back in 2003. Sonic Riders Zero Gravity came out later, in 2006.

So you're saying Sony has a vested interest in making sure Palworld doesn't lose their lawsuit. They already did due to the extended media stuff; but this is another, much larger, reason to make sure Nintendo doesn't win that lawsuit.

Difference is Nintendo went after the Palworld creators because they can bully them financially to ensure they'd either win or bankrupt them trying. Sony is a different animal altogether, so Nintendo won't touch them, even if they'd have a much stronger case against Sony than against Pocket Pair.
I imagine a smart lawyer could use that against Nintendo. By finding Nintendo's patents for mechanics seen in Astro Bot, I wonder if you couldn't then argue that Nintendo's lawsuit against Palworld is thus frivolous and targeted. As in, Nintendo's inaction versus Sony's copyright infringement shows it is not about the principle of the copyright itself, but rather about abusing the copyright system take out smaller competition.
Given that Sony used the abandoned collab project with Nintendo to make the PlayStation...

For starters, there's no such a thing as "IP infringement." The term "IP" is a generic undefined term to cover all types of intellectual property laws, including copyright, patent, trademark, trade secrets, etc. It as no meaning in the legal world, as these laws are all very different.
Second, you cannot selectively enforce patents. A patent is a temporary monopoly granted by the government, in exchange for putting your invention on the public record. As soon as it's shown in court you don't care about the monopoly, and allow the patent to be violated by one party, the patent is not enforceable anymore. This prevents a malicious party from patenting an invention, allowing everyone to make use of the invention thinking it's not patented, then suing all of the richest parties for infringement.
This is the perfect graphical representation of why it’s Bad for games if Nintendo wins its suit against PalWorld. I mean I love law, and am going to get my JD, and I think that PalWords Defense Attorney should take this in as an exhibit. This is good enough to explain to some patent judge why it’s bad for the consumer.
This. The ramifications of this suit are far-reaching, and everyone involved in the process, especially the judge needs to truly understand how unhealthy this is going to be if Nintendo wins that suit. The gaming industry will become an every man for himself patent war free for all if they see there's an inch to be taken and the honor system is gone.

If Nintendo win, then it'll ruin Japan's games industry and any chance of new competitors driving Japanese developers out of country where they too, along with the rest of the world, ignore Japans incredibly flawed court system. @@smithynoir9980I mean the monster catching idea wasn't even a new concept with Pokemon. Shin Megami Tensai already had a simlar mechanic before Pokemon came out. The only difference is the former uses a dialogue system while the latter uses a ball, but the concept is still very similar. I wouldn't say the a ball catching system is super innovative over the former in any real way, just different.

Nintendo at this point just want to own the entire platformer/monster taming genre, they simply want to remove everyone's game so that only them are the ones that can make those games. Their goal is probably first remove all competition and then second make the same slop every year like FIFA and maybe even make a life service game as there is simply no competition and for the majority of the nintendo users (children and adults who rarely care about the game industry) will keep buying because a 5 out of 10 game is better than no games.

Astro is definitely worth playing. It's a fun laid back platformer with some actual challenging levels that are hidden. It has a lot of nostalgic characters as bots. They could have chosen some better games to do the themed levels. I assume they couldn't get permission for some of that though.
F- Nintendo if they think they can copyright styles of gameplay. It is a massive L for the gaming idustry and prevents other cool platforming games from being created.

Nintendo lawsuit jokes aside, to be honest, Astrobot is a little too on the nose on the gameplay copy pasta. Like straight up copying FLUDD is a little too much. The rest is basic game platforming, but the FLUDD stuff is a little hard to ignore.

@@justanobody0 FLUDD is the contraption that Mario has on his back in Sunshine, the water tank/water gun he has. He can float with it, use the water to solve puzzles and defeat enemies, and depending on the attachments, rocket jump, rocket boost, or do the twin waterstream float.
Sony won't actually sue though, because Sony actually has the resources to fight back, and if they do only Nintendo will suffer.

I love Mario Sunshine its my favorite Mario game and I've 100% it many times. That being said there are similarities in Astro but nothing genuinely copyright that's just silly

Its not so much that its a ripp-off as much as it's nintendo being the most influential maker of platformers in the last 30 years.
Everyone that worked on Astro bot probably played Mario 64.
Great, Nintendo sues Palworld and now every fanboy is combing through games to find anything they can claim was stolen. A lot of this is stuff that's been in other games for years. Kingdom Hearts had a level inside a whale and Nintendo didn't go after Square for it. Hell there were 3D platformers that came out before Mario 64. Just because it's the most well known, doesn't mean Nintendo owns the concept.
I reckon it's a sarcastic response to the palworld thing. If they're suing them for the reason they said, then they have to sue everyone ever, but also they should be sued for the same reason.
Nobody is claiming Nintendo should go after them or anything like that. They are saying that Nintendo is stupid for going after Palworld because they didn't invent the system they patented either (notably after Palworld was already making money). They also made the patent super broad and vague to be a massive catch all. The battle system they patented was also invented 10 years prior to Nintendo using it. It's just a turn based battle system. FF, Dragon Quest, and a ton of other games used it before pokemon, but somehow they were able to patent it to bully a small developer.
Clearly Sony is trolling Nintendo with this game. Nintendo can try and sue but they won't win.
