Watchdogs 2 did a great game. but it had characters being not fully-fledged masculine. The helmet with emojis in WD2 was pr9b thr first time people saw that. it introduced lots of clever things but in natural progression.

Entertainment appeals to the the fantasy. Not political stuff that happens in real life. Yes, its how it's presented. You can have a gay character and be written well. But most of these characters aren't. They seem forced. It's not only that. How do you make a gay character appeal to the audience when majority of people in US are straight? We can't appeal to those we cannot understand. Even if you are gay. Try getting a straight person to understand how a gay persons love story feels like. A story puts you the reader or watcher in the shoes of the character. And it's very difficult to put a person who's straight into the shoes of a gay person. We don't understand.
I mean, you can. You can make a story about how your parents helped you get a job. And then you try something different and shine. Or a story where you are the brother that the parents ignored because they thought the other sibling would be the one who become somebody. And then a situation comes up where you need to save the situation. It is pretty easy. Problem is that these writers, can not tell a basic story.
Creativity has alway been a tool to work through ones traumata and the relationship to your parents can be the source of alot of deep trauma. Also writing a story about overcoming your parents is right there at the base of modern storytelling when Zeus and his siblings take on his father Kronos and the other titans. Realising your parents are just normal people and not gods is a common trope, especially in coming-of-age-stories. Its when you realise they are vulnerable or, get this, not infallible, can make mistakes and can be wrong. Also, you don't know what a poet is.

They know that female oriented games don't sell. Gaming is still a male majority hobby. I believe they don't care about gender anymore when making games. They make games with a target ages in mind specifically. This is why kids games are the biggest market now and gaming in general has become less adult. the biggest issue with the devs for most games these days is they are terminally online. they have not had a REAL interaction with a normal person in years(approaching decades now) they can only create 2 characters, either themselves or the empty soulless caricatures they pontificate about on twitter, knowing nothing about them other than what equipment they have and who they sleep with.
This is why movies like, John Wick, The Grey Man, The Equalizer etc are so popular. We need the battle, to feel like the hero and fight for something more important than ourselves.

Why not? Video games can be anything you want them to be really. Infinite money makers(live service slops with few hits like Helldivers), incredible single player rollercoasters(Uncharted, God of War) and reflections of our existence(Nier Automata, 13 Sentinels). Maybe I didn't phrase the last one very well but I hope you get what I mean. I don't mind some games being this warped version that Social media has if they're done well, I don't think video games should be stopped at the point of escapism and reality because some truly amazing stories can be told beyond just good old escapism. The comparison would be making a man watch a chickflick in which we cannot understand why women love these types of movies or shows. The reason why is because a game will place you the audience into the characters shoes. And something like their sexuality comes into the mix. straight men cannot understand. It's not because we hate gay people that's not the case at all. It's just we cannot understand because it's not our appeal. The game does not appeal to the people they are trying to sell it to. I'll give you an example. Master Chief. What makes him appealing? He represents hope, survival, etc. Men can see and appeal to him because they themselves can relate. Asterion. What makes him appealing? His sassyness appeals to the female fantasy. Every good written character has something that the audience when placed into their shoes can relate to. And if the character is openly gay and acts gay when you're asking a straight person to place themselves into their shoes. They can't understand it. Because we cannot relate.

Different types of people naturally gravitate towards and are naturally suited for certain types of jobs. Go to a grocery store. There will be "diverse" women in the deli, less "diverse" women in the bakery, very likely zero women in the meat department. And the "men" working in the jewelry department look a lot different then the ones cutting meat. DEI is unnatural and tries to shove people into positions they are not naturally suited for or qualified for.

Sarah Connor is a girl boss that I can root for as a straight man. She’s endearing, has a great backstory, and knows her limits as a female despite the odds stacked against her favor with gigachad Schwarzenegger chasing after her. I love stories that aren’t afraid to explore weaknesses of the main character. Some of the best shows like Good Time, Mr Robot, and Fight Club really explore those weaknesses and it makes for compelling storytelling. They just have really dumb writers at these media corporations nowadays. One could argue it’s a side effect of gen z and millennial brainrot. I really related to Asmon calling out the millennial generation (my generation) for being antisocial and inauthentic. Inauthentic obnoxious people seem to thrive in the corporate setting.

Gamedev here who works on cozy games: Cozy doesn't mean "boring". Most City Builders you can describe as "Cozy". Cozy describes games that are more about having great atmosphere, things to watch and not to have massive punishment for experimentation. Dave the Diver I'd call a Cozy game for the most part. Its not that deep in gameplay, but it spins a nice story, atmosphere and fantasy with enough depth to enjoy it. They are also about stories (when they have them) that make you feel positive e.g. helping others.
Before all that DEI crap, I never thought of race etc.. I played SSX and saw the black dude with dreadlock and was like "Hehe he's dope, dreadlocks and shit", fav char. Now everytime you see something like that you instantly think "Oh here comes the politics"

Also I guess it would be more accurate to say they hate straight male gamers, but that is the majority of the consumer base whether they want to admit it or not. And if you need confirmation of their hatred of those gamers it's not hard to find, either directly from their mouths in videos, on their social media, in the articles they write, or with the pretty blatant agenda that has become a central theme to the games they work on.

Entertainment appeals to the the fantasy. Not political stuff that happens in real life. Yes, its how it's presented. You can have a gay character and be written well. But most of these characters aren't. They seem forced. It's not only that. How do you make a gay character appeal to the audience when majority of people in US are straight? We can't appeal to those we cannot understand. Even if you are gay. Try getting a straight person to understand how a gay persons love story feels like. A story puts you the reader or watcher in the shoes of the character. And it's very difficult to put a person who's straight into the shoes of a gay person. We don't understand.
I mean, you can. You can make a story about how your parents helped you get a job. And then you try something different and shine.
Or a story where you are the brother that the parents ignored because they thought the other sibling would be the one who become somebody. And then a situation comes up where you need to save the situation.
It is pretty easy.
Problem is that these writers, can not tell a basic story.
Creativity has alway been a tool to work through ones traumata and the relationship to your parents can be the source of alot of deep trauma.
Also writing a story about overcoming your parents is right there at the base of modern storytelling when Zeus and his siblings take on his father Kronos and the other titans.
Realising your parents are just normal people and not gods is a common trope, especially in coming-of-age-stories. Its when you realise they are vulnerable or, get this, not infallible, can make mistakes and can be wrong.

Infinite money makers(live service slops with few hits like Helldivers), incredible single player rollercoasters(Uncharted, God of War) and reflections of our existence(Nier Automata, 13 Sentinels). I don't mind some games being this warped version that Social media has if they're done well, I don't think video games should be stopped at the point of escapism and reality because some truly amazing stories can be told beyond just good old escapism. I personally learnt some life changing stuff from playing games and I don't want that to be lost.

The comparison would be making a man watch a chickflick in which we cannot understand why women love these types of movies or shows. The reason why is because a game will place you the audience into the characters shoes. And something like their sexuality comes into the mix. straight men cannot understand. It's not because we hate gay people that's not the case at all. It's just we cannot understand because it's not our appeal. The game does not appeal to the people they are trying to sell it to. I'll give you an example. Master Chief. What makes him appealing? He represents hope, survival, etc. Men can see and appeal to him because they themselves can relate. Asterion. What makes him appealing? His sassyness appeals to the female fantasy. Every good written character has something that the audience when placed into their shoes can relate to. And if the character is openly gay and acts gay when you're asking a straight person to place themselves into their shoes. They can't understand it. Because we cannot relate.

I don't care about the identity of a character unless it's a core part of the overall story, if the character is well written, I couldn't care less about anything else. Also, what happened to needing uniqueness in the industry? I have seen plenty of videos about how the industry is stale now because of every company just doing the same thing in slightly different ways, isn't it good to deviate a bit from the norm? Again, using the identity of a character as a excuse for bad writing is stupid and I don't support it but if the character is well written, I don't care what identity the character has. If every game appeals to the core audience like Sony games, I find it hard to enjoy them because I don't see them doing anything that unique but I love games like The Ascent, Journey, Elden Ring, BG3, Alan Wake 2 etc. Even Forspoken had some great unique magic combat and I enjoyed it for that even if the rest was kind of shit.

Sarah Connor is a girl boss that I can root for as a straight man. She’s endearing, has a great backstory, and knows her limits as a female despite the odds stacked against her favor with gigachad Schwarzenegger chasing after her.
I love stories that aren’t afraid to explore weaknesses of the main character. Some of the best shows like Good Time, Mr Robot, and Fight Club really explore those weaknesses and it makes for compelling storytelling.

Gamedev here who works on cozy games:
Cozy doesn't mean "boring". Most City Builders you can describe as "Cozy".
Cozy describes games that are more about having great atmosphere, things to watch and not to have massive punishment for experimentation.
Dave the Diver I'd call a Cozy game for the most part. Its not that deep in gameplay, but it spins a nice story, atmosphere and fantasy with enough depth to enjoy it.
They are also about stories (when they have them) that make you feel positive e.g. helping others.
Before all that DEI crap, I never thought of race etc.. I played SSX and saw the black dude with dreadlock and was like "Hehe he's dope, dreadlocks and shit", fav char. Now everytime you see something like that you instantly think "Oh here comes the politics"

yup. People LOVED tell tales the walking dead game. The main characters were a black man and a young blackgirl. No one gave a shit, those characters brought us to tears. Now when we see these characters in a trailer its like smelling shit before laying eyes out it, everyone just clears the room.
There's also Crysis. Or Crysis 2 and 3 specifically. Those games reek masculinity and have a black guy as the lead character.
The thing is that the games aren't about some stupid social commentary, it's about blowing the aliens the hell back to their own galaxy. I'm glad Crytek has nothing to do with EA because they'd bastardize it into another bullshit game with an extremely safe direction let alone the fact that the optimization would be down to hell. Crysis 3 was already leaning more into the open world trope games were devolving into back in the early 2010s.

I am a game developer for a small studio and I had a casual conversation with one of our designers (she has a lot more experience in the industry than me) and she told me, like it was a normal thing, that most designers and publishers in fact hate video games with a passion...

They had to rewrite their game engine and haphazardly put together Halo 2 in about 8 months. But even then the game came out a success because the devs have actual talent/skill.

It took me two seconds of googling to find out this was a small cameo in Suicide Squad (which is still a dogshit game but not because of "wokism" or w/e the fuck people wanna call it) and it's an alternate universe version of the character. "What if alternate universe but genders are swapped around" has been a trope for like, literally as long as pop culture has existed. Mr. Freeze having a Popsicle wife was introduced *after* the original debut of the character, several decades after. He was named Mr. Zero originally and then swapped for the cartoon. Not the 90s one. The 60s one. It wasn't until the 90s that he was reinvented as the tragic character that's popular today- I don't see people complaining and going "UGH WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST MAKE A NEW CHARACTER THEN-"

People need to realize how this works. These game developers have 2 choices, make a good game and make money through sales or make a DEI game and get guaranteed ESG fund money from Blackrock. The latter is lower effort, less risky and probably more profitable.
I think people fail to realize just how massive these ESG funding machines really are. If Blackrock was nationalized, we could pay off nearly half of the US federal debt instantly. If Blackrock was a nation, they'd have a seat at the G20, being the 17th or 18th richest nation in the world. They have more annual profits than the gross national product of 178 countries in the world.
