    About the tiktok of the doctor. If you're obese the first thing the doctor should tell you is to lose weight. Is the best solution to rule out the majority of the problems, and if the problem persists THEN you get further studies. Besides, when being too obese you can't even fit in an MRI scanner so a lot of testing can't be done until you lose weight.

    • @crappyaccount
      @crappyaccount 29 дней назад +2

      it really just depends on the situation. for example, if an overweight patient has a personal or family history of medical issues (ex: injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, genetic problems, etc) that could also explain the symptoms then it doesn't make sense to blame everything on the weight and also not look into those other factors. weight might just be contributing instead of being the cause.
      also, depending on the patient, the ability to reach a normal weight can take years depending on their ability to do things like exercise. if they are having severe pain or other conditions which limits their physical activity, they likely won't be able to lose weight very fast even if they improve their diet. so if they keep going to dr's saying "i lost x pounds and still feel shitty" over and over it doesn't make sense to keep telling them to "lose more" or delaying investigating other possible causes for potentially years until they're slim. by that point, if the problem was caused by an underlying issue, by the time all the weight is gone it's likely gotten way worse because it was untreated for so long.
      my relative was overweight and had a documented history of injuries and VISIBLE musculoskeletal conditions, but every time they saw a doctor their pain was just blamed on the weight, even when they were losing and saying it wasn't helping and things were getting worse, for years they were brushed off/just given a few pills that didnt work, and had to jump through hoops for tests. they're at a healthy weight now but it doesn't matter because they're disabled and in pain every day, because the real problem was several degenerative joint and nervous system conditions as a direct result of the aforementioned injuries and conditions, and others as a result of the job they were working. all of this could have been caught sooner if docs just fucking did their job and looked at peoples medical files and work histories and not just saying everything is because weight.🙃
      even if someone's problem truly was just weight related, there's no reason not to do basic tests or reviews to rule out other factors.

    • @codyduignan4266

      No, it doesn't. I lost 40 kgs in 6 months without even trying. Just put the fork down and go for a walk. Also, don't blame the doctor because your relative is fat. If they weren't fat, they would have been diagnosed sooner.

    • @kpik23

      @@crappyaccount I'm sorry for your family member, my mother has similar issues and cannot lose weight to save her life due to arthritis and joint pain. People don't get how hard it is. Yes, we should always try to be at a healthy weight but people shouldn't be dismissed when something hurts and they are also fat. You feel so unheard and makes it worse! Those doctors didn't do their job listening to their patient. Some compassion for other people is not a big ask.

    • @daniellubitz9693

      @@crappyaccountlosing weight does not take years, unless you’re 1000lbs. I lost 20 pounds in the last month. Walk and have a caloric deficit. Also, there can be underlying reasons why losing weight takes longer. If your gut health is garbage, it can stop your weight loss journey. Check if you have a candida yeast infection or other gastrointestinal issues.

    • @crappyaccount
      @crappyaccount 6 дней назад

      @@daniellubitz9693 losing weight CAN take a while, depending on your ability to do basic exercise like walk for example. like i said above, the relative i was talking about (who was no where near 1000 pounds) had a severe spinal injury which caused a deformity of their back and legs along with several other neurological/ musculoskeletal problems, joint degeneration and arthritis affecting their ability to move around. to this day they can literally be sitting doing nothing and having excruciating pain. they lost the weight through diet and are now a healthy weight, but it took a while because that's the only method they had...they couldn't just go hit the gym or go jogging every day or something. it's easy to tell someone to "just walk more" when every step doesn't flare up 5+ different inoperable health conditions that meds do nothing for🙃 like, this is good advice in general but please be more understanding to those who have disabilities. what im trying to say whats easy to us is not easy to everyone.
      i agree that the person being overweight didn't help their condition, but the point i was making was that doctors are quick to blame complaints solely on someone being fat (instead of looking at it as just one part of the problem) and dont bother looking for any underlying issues, which is ESPECIALLY stupid when they a) have a documented medical history of non weight related stuff that could explain the symptoms or b) start losing weight and it doesn't help or their symptoms have gotten WORSE.

      Well you can not over indulge and yea you'll lose weight, but you won't notice it till a year. You need a combination of not over eating and exercising to burn the fat reserves, or just starve yourself and have your fat reserves fuel your body but that'll hurt.

    • @chuckmarius323
      @chuckmarius323 5 месяцев назад +7

      Depends on the problem. For example I've been having pain in the lower part of my legs for over a decade (around the ankle region including the feet), after 2-5 minutes of walking I need to stop, feet go numb and muscle hurts worse than a cramp. I haven't sought medical attention for it until now because I was told "it's because you're fat, just lose weight" and that was when I was just a bit overweight, not even close to obese. Problem was walking was how I burned most of my calories so obviously I became obese after a while - I lasted a year pushing through the excruciating pain in my legs until I sunk into depression and that put an end to it. Eventually I did lose the weight, got into normal range and guess what? Pain still there, if I had sought medical attention for it then instead of blaming it on my weight, I wouldn't have gone obese, I wouldn't have avoided getting out of the house and meeting with friends, maybe that would've helped with my depression too.

    This video randomly reminds me of the "Heart Attack Grill" restaurant. There's this guy known as Dr. John who owns an restaurant called Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas and he is a vegetarian and a nutritionist, he started out on the complete opposite side of fighting obesity as the owner of a gym franchise but he was sued by a major fast food chain because his gym's name sounded similar to their restaurants. He lost the lawsuit and his businesses, his whole world was destroyed.
    He felt like he couldn't beat the fast food industry and all his efforts to promote health and wellness lost out because he didn't have as much money and couldn't afford better lawyers. From this sense of loss and failure, a villain was born. He decided basically if you can't beat 'em, join ‘em and that's when he opened the heart attack grill. He openly admitted that his food can kill people and he warns them about the risks and doesn't force them to eat at his restaurant. You'd think with those circumstances his business is doomed to fail but people still choose to eat there everyday. He's like the antagonist of the story but he never killed a single character. The characters themselves chose the risk of death proving an accurate point about Americans diet and the fast food industry. The restaurant allows to eat there for FREE if you are a certain amount of overweight purposely allowing customers to choose to kill themselves. He even owned one of the regular customers ashes after he died due to obesity which caused an heart attack choosing to eat at his restaurant everyday to further prove his point and put the bag of his ashes on the table during an interview in the documentary that's on youtube.

    Being overweight is a lot like being in debt, the worse you let it get the longer you're going to have to work on fixing it AND you're going to need to take more drastic steps to fix it in addition to working on it for longer.
    But I don't let my situation define me. And I don't pretend like my situation is "acceptable."
    Nobody wants to date someone who's broke!
    But instead of getting mad or offended, I've doubled down on my commitment to making something of myself.
    Now I'm getting certified to teach a couple different styles of yoga + pilates & I start every day with a heated workout class BEFORE I work a full 9-5.
    My commitment to improving my situation has made me a ton of new friends, gotten me in better shape than I've ever been (I'm 5'10" & 160lbs) AND I'M MAKING MYSELF FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT OF MY PRIMARY EMPLOYER!
    You can't trust any company these days to not screw you over for a better final quarter. So why not diversify your income streams? Why not just drive for Uber or Lyft? I mean... you can... if you wanna put tons of undesirable wear & tear on your vehicle.... and you'll still be getting screwed by a company.
    So yeah. Whether your weight is a problem or your finances are a problem: the only one who can solve your problem IS YOU. Step One starts with committing to resolving the problem in a way that you can sustain on a day-to-day basis.
    Doing something once or twice a week is just an excuse to continue to suffer with a problem while acting like the world is against you & nothing you do can change it. 😂

    The term "obese" in my case was the catalyst for my transformation. Was told I was "clinically obese" when I was 18. That sent a shock down my spine and gave me the motivation to start paying attention to my food and working out. 15 years later and I'm still at 9,2% body fat and don't even have to pay attention anymore, it all became second nature. I'm incredibly fckin thankful I was told I was obese on hindsight and not praised because I was fat as fck.

    The biggest problem (pun intended) that obesity causes in my day to day life is a random one..
    I work at a crematorium. It's getting more common that huge, wardrobe shaped coffins are being used for obese people. Sometimes its a tight fit for the cremator, and can cause some pretty bad turbulence in the main chamber, causing damage to the refactory brickwork, etc. When it's someone that big, the fat can start leaking out too, causing damage to components of the cremator. As you can imagine, it ain't nice cleaning that up either..
    In a few years, you're gonna see a lot of crematoriums have to gut out their cremators for even bigger cremators just to keep up with the demand of more and more obese people.
    Edit: It's also a risk for our musculoskeletal health. Ive nearly put my back out wheeling around coffins of this size.

    I am so sick of this fat positivity bullshit. Up until last year I was 400 pounds, and you know what instead of just being positive about it and trying to accept myself I was at least mature and smart enough to understand that that shit was fucking killing me and I wasn’t going to live very long or even any type of life. I’m only 27 and I’ve had spinal surgery and I have been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. So I decided to do something about it and I got bariatric surgery and in the past 11 months I have lost 210 pounds so I am now sitting at 190 pounds. I really don’t understand these people that think it’s OK to be fat. Yes it’s important to accept yourself for who you are but at the same time you need to understand if you are an unhealthy person so you can do something about it. Surely these people that are pushing positivity must be having the same kind of back pain and out of shape and out of breath experiences that I had. It even just hurts standing up even just walking to the kitchen would make me heavy breathe. These people have to be going through the same thing and there’s no way they are happy about it. Buying clothes was awful, trying to fit inside of a car was awful, I couldn’t do anything recreational or fun because I wasn’t in shape enough. This fat positivity shit just needs to die

One of them is so big she barely fits in her car- she has to move the seat all the way back and lift the steering wheel up, just to extricate herself. Now, because of ongoing whining about their health (and because DEI where we are is definitely a thing) theyre now placed on light duty jobs,which is where you would go say, post-surgery until you heal up. How in Gods name am I able to outpace people in their early 20s?? I know why- because of the nonsense discussed in this video! If you're so big you break toilet seats in Ladies room, then perhaps a change in lifestyle is in order.

    Let me say that that doctor is correct.
    I was overweight. Weighed about 290.
    It concerned me so I started eating better and working out. I did not drink soda. I refrained from fast food. I ate one meal a day and that was lunch.
    I was not losing weight.
    I started feeling physically ill. My back started hurting so bad I had to stop working.
    After a week of that it was only getting worse and I actually could not eat or drink without getting violently ill.
    It got to the point where I had to go to the ER.
    They diagnosed me with complete kidney failure due to a disease that made my kidneys into scar tissue.
    I had been to a few doctors previously and they recommended nothing but eating better and vitamins.
    Lots of good that did me huh.
    So I got stuck in the hospital for 3 weeks and put on hemodialysis.
    I went from 290 to 190. All of that weight was water my body could not get rid of.
    Go to a doctor that wants to check every possible avenue of potential illness. It will probably save your life or at least prevent a horrible future.

      Sadly, that happens with a lot of diseases. Early diagnoses are lifesavers and sometimes you don't get them for a reason or another.
      I've been mocked by relatives sometimes because I had something that I didn't know what was it about and told them I wanted to see a specialist to get it checked.
      They laughed it off telling me I was hypochondriac and that they have this and that and just deal with it and never went to a doctor because it's nothing.
      Quite frankly, I don't give a damn about being stoic, you don't win any prize for not getting checked. Best you can win is an undiagnosed illness.
      I'd rather be mocked and called anxious rather than not get diagnosed. Of course you don't have to panic whenever you have a headache and jump to conclusions, especially reading unrelated stuff on the internet and self diagnosing. Now THAT is indeed hypochondriac behaviour.
      But to get actual issues diagnosed by a professional, especially if it lasts more than a few days, is paramount.
      What really annoys me is when you get those doctors that minimize issues and tell you "yeah, you got this and that, but I wouldn't do anything about it for now, as it's not that advanced", and then you have an issue and doctors say "if you had it checked immediately, it could have been easily solved".
      I mean, let's put all doctors in a room together and have them argue with each other until they reach a common standard. I know medicine isn't an exact science like math, but still...

      Video guy didn't put this into words properly, but say I'm diagnosed with leukemia and refusing treatment.
      I walk in complaining I bleed too much, too long, too easily. Is the doctor wrong in refusing further tests for liver disease, diabetes, etc.? debatable. If I get these tests, and they return negative, is the doctor wrong in not treating me for something he can't falsify but causes the same symptom, like ITP? doubtful, but debatable.
      If you said yes to either of those, assume now that 50% of the country's population gets diagnosed with leukemia. Does that yes still make sense? maybe. Will insurance companies (or public healthcare) still be able to service these leukemia patients? What about the other half of the population?
      You can clearly go too far either way here, but I sincerely doubt 'FatTok' influencers take the nuance in this into consideration before saying that the doctor is a bigot for not pumping my leukemic ass full of corticoids.

    • @YourComputer
      @YourComputer 3 месяца назад +3

      @@lukegros If we're trying to be fair, a doctor should not (arguably, cannot) treat you for something that they are not able to diagnose you for. Granted, some things do not require testing to prove (e.g. constant bleeding) (though you would still be tested to figure out what is causing the bleeding), but many things do. And if you're bleeding constantly, it doesn't make sense to test for liver and kidney problems before conducting any other kind of test. To bring to attention things that are of less importance and not as life-threatening than bleeding constantly is itself absurd and can raise eyebrows as to whether or not you find the bleeding issue to be of actual concern. If anyone is going to approach things logically, let it be the doctor. Don't try to confuse things.
      Multiple things can lead to the same symptoms. It is not necessarily easy to diagnose anyone for something (though some things are just plain obvious). Hence why testing is important (though many times inadequate). There are some tests like an echo or an MRI that would be difficult to impossible to perform if the person is overweight. And some health problems are the direct result of being overweight, and that would include liver and kidney problems. Clearly, requiring the patient to make better lifestyle choices is inducing a necessary process of elimination.
      I would not use leukemia as an example or analogy. We have tests for such a thing that help narrow things down to the point where a proper diagnosis can be made.

    • @lukegros
      @lukegros 3 месяца назад

      @@YourComputer In the hypothetical there's an initial diagnosis for leukemia (which causes low platelet counts, thus clotting issues) and refusal of treatment (by the patient). ITP, liver disease, and diabetes all cause clotting issues, and ITP, by it's nature, can't be ruled out in this case.
      Furthermore, the second question (if you should be treated for the disease that can't be ruled out) assumes an affirmative answer to the first question (testing despite a condition, leukemia, which already explains the symptom).
      Regarding the severity of leukemia and the alternatives vs obesity and the alternatives, you can also ask the same questions about osteoarthritis, which is a possible symptom of obesity, and rheumatoid arthritis, which is very hard to rule out in obese people, but treated differently.

    • @YourComputer
      @YourComputer 3 месяца назад +2

      @@lukegros There's a reason why testing is even a thing. If per the hypothetical you've been diagnosed with leukemia, redirecting towards ITP, liver disease, kidney, etc, as a cause for clotting issues wouldn't make sense and is arguably a red herring. As such, it would not be wrong of the doctor to deny treating symptoms (i.e. ITP, liver disease, kidney disease, etc) of said leukemia when it has already been concluded that leukemia is the cause. To further press on the matter towards redirection is to affirm ignorance on the whole medical practice.
      While the same questions can be raised for other issues, you will generally find the same answers. Indeed, it is not as debatable as you make it seem.
      To be accurate, obesity doesn't cause the varied types of arthritis you mentioned. Nor would it be impossible to rule out for obese people. Simply mentioning "possible symptom" is itself evidence that it is not a direct result of obesity. Even the fact that it might be approached or treated differently would reveal the same.

I could start jogging on my days off and climbing the stairs on a break at work. I hate cardio, but I can do it if necessary.
